Aug 10 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole.
Asian stocks are mostly firmer, following Friday's Wall Street rally, though European ‌share futures are off as oil rises amid much confusion over the Strait of Hormuz.
Treasury ‌Secretary Scott Bessent over the weekend claimed the strait would become "irrelevant" as oil would eventually be redirected through pipelines, giving **** ysts the impression the White House was trying to wash its hands of the whole affair.
Iran said on Sunday that a deal with Oman defining new shipping lanes in the Strait was in its final stages but reiterated that the waterway would only reopen once the United States met other conditions, which ‌seems unlikely.
Meanwhile the Houthis say they have resumed attacks on the Red Sea port city of Mocha, which will be making shippers through the Bab el-Mandeb strait nervous.

If you're in the market for some reliable and generous dividend income, consider Realty Income (NYSE: O). It's not only a dividend payer, recently sporting a dividend yield of 5.12%, but it's also a monthly dividend payer. (Most companies pay their dividends quarterly.) A monthly dividend can be especially attractive to anyone planning to live off of that income.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
You can expect that dividend to grow. Realty Income's last increase, announced in June, was its 115th consecutive quarterly increase. It has paid its monthly dividend for more than 670 consecutive months -- or more than 55 years!
Realty Income is a real estate investment trust (REIT) -- a company that owns a lot of real estate and leases it to tenants. Better still, it employs "triple-net leases," which require tenants to cover real estate taxes, property insurance, and operating expenses. Its portfolio encompasses more than 15,500 properties in all 50 U.S. states and parts of Europe. It's well diversified, too, with more than 1,700 clients in more than 90 different industries. Top industries include grocery stores, convenience stores, and home improvement stores.
The company is run very well, which is evident from its portfolio occupancy level, which was recently 98.8% and has never been below 96%. That points to considerable stability and a rather dependable dividend. This is not a stock that's likely to surge in value, but it should be a reliable, long-term slow grower while delivering regular dollars into your account.

Over the past few decades, the majority of media and entertainment companies were characterized by the strength and ability of their content libraries and growth in subscribers. This framework is now evolving as streaming continues to mature and advertising becomes more data-backed. As a result, investors are now focusing on companies capable of turning customer relationships into high margins. Simply put, a key shift is underway, i.e., from owning greater IP (Intellectual Property) to owning distribution, data, and consumer engagement, which can provide support in making IP more valuable.
Moving forward, the broader market will reward companies capable of bringing advertising, streaming, theme parks, merchandise, and live experiences in the single customer ecosystem. This transition has been supporting The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), with Wall Street ***** ysts becoming optimistic despite increased competition.
The company is not being valued as a movie studio or an operator of theme parks. Rather, it is being seen as a consumer ecosystem company that can bring customers throughout parks, sports, streaming, and merchandise. This thesis is further strengthened by the recent quarterly results. Its revenues saw an increase of 7% YoY to reach $25.2 billion, while total segment operating income rose 21% YoY to $5.6 billion. Furthermore, its adjusted EPS grew from $1.61 to $2.06, with management reiterating full-year outlook despite a challenging economic environment.
Apart from the numbers, the breadth of the company's consumer engagement grabbed the attention of investors and ***** ysts. Robust spending and attendance through Experiences, success in the consumer products ***** ociated with franchises like Toy Story, along with ESPN viewership gains, highlight a business model capable of monetizing the same customer throughout multiple platforms. This is exactly what the market wants. The company wants to show that the strongest ***** et is not a single movie or a streaming service, but it is the network of relationships connecting them.
An ***** yst at Needham, Laura Martin, kept a "Buy" rating on The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS)'s stock with a price objective of $125. The ***** yst's reasoning is over and above the quarterly earnings. The thesis centers on the company's first-party data ecosystems, which are among the most valuable in the broader entertainment industry. It collects customer information throughout Disney+, ESPN, Hulu, cruises, theme parks, and consumer products. The management remains focused on integrating such datasets into the unified platform.

The move, outlined in a meeting held last week between Hirdaramani Group director Sid Hirdaramani and General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) CEO Dr. Mohamed Awad, is part of Egypt's continued push to attract foreign direct investment, particularly in export-oriented manufacturing.
According to GAFI, Hirdaramani Group intends to establish Egypt as a regional centre for manufacturing and exports to global markets, leveraging what the company described as Egypt's "competitive advantages".
The group, which operates more than 30 factories across several countries and employs over 55,000 staff, reported annual revenues of approximately $1.2bn with monthly garment production ranging from 12 million to 18.4 million units exported internationally.
During the meeting, Dr. Awad reiterated GAFI's support for facilitating Hirdaramani's expansion, highlighting the importance of attracting international manufacturers as part of Egypt's strategy to grow its export base and deepen local industrial capabilities.
He stated that such investments help integrate Egypt further into global supply chains and support the development of local supplier industries capable of meeting high international standards.

SYDNEY/LONDON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Global equities inched higher on Monday as oil prices held broadly steady after Iran said it was nearing a final pact with Oman defining new shipping lanes in the ‌Strait of Hormuz, and as markets awaited key U.S. inflation data on Wednesday.
Europe's continent-wide Stoxx 600 index rose 0.1% ‌while futures for the U.S. S&P 500 climbed 0.2% and those for the tech-focused Nasdaq were up 0.4%.
Iran said on Sunday that a deal with Oman about transit through the Strait of Hormuz was in its final stages but reiterated that the waterway would only reopen once the United States met other conditions.
Brent crude was little changed at $83.50 a barrel as shipping through the strait remained at a trickle, although it remained well below late April's peak of more than $126 a barrel.

With the explosion of conference expansion in recent years, it can be harder than ever for friends and family of college football players to attend games in person due to the increased geographic ground to cover.
Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr.'s mom Linda makes it a priority to get to her son's games, but has a notable dislike for flying. Her commute to Hurricanes games just got a whole lot more comfortable thanks to former Miami wide receiver Michael Irvin.
Irvin presented Linda Fletcher with a custom Miami Hurricanes RV that will take her across the country in style this season. The top of the RV reads "Fetching Fletchers", and is outfitted with the white, orange and green colors of the Hurricanes' jerseys.
Fletcher Jr. spoke to Kirk Herbstreit and Joey Galloway last January about his mom's dedication to driving wherever it takes to watch her son play.

A trio of first-team stars at La Liga giants Barcelona on Sunday moved to reiterate their commitment to the cause with a view to the season ahead in Catalunya's capital.
This came through respective early returns to pre-season training.
The majority of Hansi Flick's squad have of course now reported to base at the Ciutat Esportiva to kickstart preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. The likes of Marc Bernal, Alejandro Balde and Wojciech Szczęsny, in fact, have been hard at work for a number of weeks already.
For those members of Barca's ranks to have advanced all the way to the semi-finals of this summer's World Cup, though, their comebacks were pencilled in for this coming Wednesday, August 12th.
This group includes the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Jules Koundé.

After a year at the helm, Novo Nordisk's CEO Maziar Mike Doustdar's task of closing the gap to pacesetter Eli Lilly doesn't look to be getting any easier.
Doustdar joined Novo at the height of spiralling erosion to rivals in the obesity and type 2 diabetes market segments. While the Danish drugmaker has since gained approval for oral Wegovy, a drug that set a record-breaking pace for a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) at launch, other pipeline products have had mixed clinical results. Earlier this week, cardiovascular disease drug ziltivekimab failed a Phase III trial, while CagriSema fell short in a non-inferiority trial comparing it to Lilly's tirzepatide.
Coupled with ongoing sales decline, dealmaking presents an obvious avenue in which to boost pipeline offerings. Novo has already said it is actively targeting bolt-on acquisitions, with Doustdar reiterating during the Q2 earnings call that large-scale, transformative deals are still a way off.
"I'm very proud of our internal R&D and pipeline, but no company has a monopoly on good ideas. I've also said we are in every data room to try and see who else has a better idea, who else can give us ******* ets that we can bolt on, and complement what [our internal R&D teams] are doing," Doustdar said.
"I'm a person who never starts with a no to one day [being able to conduct transformative M&A], but you have to be in a very different situation than Novo Nordisk is in today," he added.

Pressure built further on FIFA president Gianni Infantino over his handling of the now shelved private investment plan on Thursday with European football's governing body UEFA reiterating their threat of boycotting the World Cups.
Infantino may have thought he had bought some time when he received the "full support" of senior FIFA directors following an emergency meeting in Morocco on Wednesday but he was to be disabused of that by UEFA's blunt statement.
UEFA's initial threat issued last Thursday to boycott FIFA competitions is widely credited to being pivotal in the plan being shelved.
Infantino has come under increasing pressure, even from within his organisation, over his handling of the proposal, and calls for him to step down had grown since he abandoned it last Saturday.
FIFA floated the plan, saying it could raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for a new commercial subsidiary, called the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which it proposed would run events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor got his wish.
A little more than a week after reiterating he wanted to stay with Indy for the rest of his career, Taylor took a big step toward fulfilling that pledge by signing a two-year, $44 million contract extension, a person with knowledge of the deal told The ***** ociated Press on Thursday. The person requested anonymity because the team had not yet made an official announcement and does not release contract terms.
The move keeps the 2021 NFL rushing champ off the free agent market next spring and comes two days after the Atlanta Falcons re-signed Bijan Robinson to a record-breaking three-year deal worth up to $75 million.
Taylor never doubted the deal would get done before Indy's season opener Sept. 13 against Baltimore.
"I have faith. I mean, there've been some good conversations, and I have faith between my agent and the front office," Taylor said last week when he arrived at training camp. "Like I said, I've already said I would love to be a Colt for life. So, I have faith that things are moving in the right direction."

Micron Technology (MU) shares dropped in late July when a Chinese rival's stock market debut instantly minted one of the country's most valuable companies.
Investors read it as a warning sign for the world's AI memory leaders. Bank of America read the same headlines and reached the opposite conclusion.
On August 3, BofA ***** yst Vivek Arya reiterated his Buy rating on Micron and held his price objective at $1,550, implying steep upside from current levels, according to a BofA Research note. Shares climbed as much as 8.3% that day.
That anxiety is understandable on the surface. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield continue to publicly negotiate as the two sides work toward a contract extension. Those talks haven't gone well so far, with Mayfield admitting he felt "disrespected" by the team's latest offer.
Because of that, team general manager Jason Licht came out Thursday and said the franchise tag would be an option next offseason if the team and Mayfield can't agree on a long-term deal.
While that makes things sound dire, Licht did reiterate that the team's goal was to work out a long-term extension with Mayfield.
The 31-year-old Mayfield is in the final year of a three-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Buccaneers in 2024. At the time, Mayfield was coming off a prove-it season with the team, where he threw for over 4,000 yards and chipped in 28 passing touchdowns. That performance earned Mayfield a long-term deal with the Bucs, and resurrected his NFL career after things looked bleak following a rough 2022 season.
Over the past two seasons, Mayfield proved his 2023 wasn't a fluke. He turned in a truly great year in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs. His numbers declined from that high in 2025, though he was still solid, throwing for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Between the trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the draft, and free agency negotiations starting on June 30, the Miami Heat are keeping themselves busy building a new contender in the East. So what has Miami done so far, and what is next for them?
On June 22, the Miami Heat traded Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, two future first-round picks, a future pick swap, and a future second-round pick for Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis.
This trade marks the beginning of a new Miami Heat, finally pairing a superstar with franchise player Bam Adebayo. Bobby Portis also comes in as a strong backup for the frontcourt duo. A few Heat players have expressed their excitement to play alongside Antetokounmpo. Davion Mitchell, for example, has already been to Greece to work out with Giannis.
Antetokounmpo and Portis sat down for their intro pressers on July 16. Bobby Portis began at 12:30 p.m. and described his excitement in playing for a team he rooted for growing up, "I was born to be a Heatle…my favorite team growing up."
Giannis Antetokounmpo's presser followed at 3:00 p.m. Throughout the presser, he reiterated his work ethic and established his desire to bring championships to the 305, "One of my goals is to win a lot of championships…I think this is the best route for me to do that."

Manchester City have reached an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the transfer of Gerónimo Rulli (34), according to a report from Foot Mercato. City have identified the Argentina international as their preferred option to become Gianluigi Donnarumma's understudy following James Trafford's departure for Leeds United.
The Premier League club had previously submitted an opening offer worth €2m for Rulli, but Marseille rejected the proposal and demanded at least €3.5m for the goalkeeper, who has entered the final year of his contract at the Vélodrome.
Rulli's agent, Kristian Bereit, subsequently travelled to Manchester City's training ground to advance negotiations, with the English club returning with an improved offer. Foot Mercato now reports that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs, although the precise financial details have not been disclosed.
Rulli has also given his approval to the move and is attracted by the opportunity to play in the Premier League. A handful of details must still be settled with the former Montpellier goalkeeper's representatives before the transfer can be formally completed.
The Argentine joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 and has since made 73 appearances for Les Phocéens. His expected departure would see OM lose another senior member of their squad after the exits of Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.GFFN | George Boxall

FIFA issued an apology to its members over "errors" in handling its now-scrapped controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup but said its leaders reaffirmed their support for Gianni Infantino to remain as president, despite growing criticism and calls for his removal from world leaders and soccer legends.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino (C) leaves Al-Madina Stadium in Rabat following the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations match between Malawi and Zambia.
In a statement issued after a crisis meeting in Morocco, FIFA said its secretary general Mattias Grafström and members of its management board "reaffirmed their full support" for Infantino.
Infantino also reiterated his support for FIFA's leadership and Grafström—who had publicly distanced himself from the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative.
In the statement, the soccer body acknowledged that mistakes were made in the process and "the process should have been handled differently."

Despite taking encouragement from Newport County's performance against Roma, head coach Hayden Mullins admits the Exiles are still short of where they need to be.
Mullins told BBC Sport Wales after his appointment that Newport needed reinforcements, and he reiterated that several signings were needed following the 4-1 defeat to the Italian giants at Rodney Parade.
"I still feel like we're three or four players away from where we need to be, in squad depth and what we're going to need throughout the season," said Mullins.
"It's a long, hard season, 46 games. We know that. It's a tough division.
"We are definitely in the process of getting that together. We know where we want to strengthen, so hopefully in the next week or so we should see a few more bodies coming in."

NEW DELHI: Several former Pakistan cricketers could face disciplinary action from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after taking part in the Asian Legends League in Zambia without the required approval, according to ESPNcricinfo. More than a dozen retired Pakistan players signed up for the tournament. The controversy began after the Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU), the country's official governing body, said the event was not sanctioned, approved or endorsed by it.

The PCB said it has taken "serious notice" of the participation of former Pakistan cricketers in the tournament.

Players found to have violated the rules could be banned for two years from receiving a PCB No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in approved overseas leagues or cricket events.

They could also be declared ineligible for any cricketing, coaching, consultancy, mentoring or other roles with the PCB and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for two years.

"In light of the above, the following disciplinary measures will be taken on individuals found to have participated in the said unsanctioned event without obtaining the requisite approvals from the PCB," the PCB statement said. "A ban of two years from the issuance of any PCB No Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in approved overseas cricket leagues or events. [And] Ineligibility for any cricketing, coaching, consultancy, mentoring and/or other ******* ignments with the PCB and the PSL for a period of two years."

According to ESPNcricinfo, Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Akmal travelled to Lusaka after signing up for the league. However, they chose not to play after learning that the required ICC approvals had not been received.

Several other former Pakistan cricketers are believed to have participated in the tournament.

The PCB said all current and former Pakistan cricketers must obtain the required approvals before taking part in overseas cricket events.

"The PCB remains fully committed to upholding the ICC regulations and safeguarding the integrity and governance of the game," the PCB statement said.

"The board reiterates that all current and former cricketers seeking to participate in overseas cricket events requiring PCB clearance must obtain the necessary approvals and NOCs prior to participation," it said.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza City (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel will not withdraw from its current lines in Gaza until Hamas has completely disarmed and pushed back on a recent deal announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Netanyahu's remarks cast more doubt on the deal to disarm Hamas, which was seen as a potential breakthrough for ending the war. It also marked a rare public display of friction with the Trump administration.
The agreement called for Hamas to begin disarming and for Israel to halt its strikes and begin withdrawing from the roughly 60% of Gaza it currently controls. It was based on an October ceasefire agreement that ended major military operations and brought about the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza but has stalled on other fronts.
Netanyahu, who faces a tough battle for reelection in October, reiterated his stance that disarmament should come first. He said Israeli forces would continue to "do whatever is necessary to protect themselves, our territory, and our citizens."
The Trump administration "sent us a draft. We did not agree. It is not our draft. We sent our comments. … This is our position," Netanyahu said in a video posted on social media.

FC Barcelona have not given up. Not yet.
The Catalan club reportedly is aware that signing Julián Alvarez from Atlético Madrid will be very difficult. But they are said to have faith that the player's own will can make a difference.
The Argentine is expected to report back for Atlético preseason on August 10th. The Blaugrana are said to be watching like a hawk for movement on that front. They reportedly expect Alvarez will reiterate his desire to leave.
Still, even if Alvarez does make a move, Atlético can still say no. What's worse, the impasse becomes a risk for all parties the longer it goes on. Barcelona need to be able to sign a plan B if the deal falls through. The Madrid club need to find a replacement if he leaves. Alvarez himself will either stay in an awkward situation, or join preseason late for Barça. And all signs point to no quick resolution — if any comes at all.
For the Catalans, the reason they are still in pursuit is twofold. One, Alvarez is their number one choice and both he and the club have worked on the signing too long to just abandon it when the going gets tough. Two, other alternatives are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive.
