SINGAPORE, July 28 (Reuters) - Chip stocks tanked across Asia on Tuesday, rattled by the threat of Chinese competition and worries about who's paying for the AI boom, while sliding oil prices did little to allay nerves about U.S. rate hikes potentially starting as soon as this week.
South Korea's KOSPI dived almost 10% to a three-month low, triggering a circuit breaker on the way down as it heads for its largest monthly fall since the Asian financial crisis in 1997. The index had more than tripled over 12 months to June, but it has shed more than a third of its value since that peak.
Shares in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, which are under extra pressure in a market transformed by leverage, made losses of more than 12% as their stratospheric rally unwinds in a hurry.
Japan's Nikkei slid about 4%, touching a two-year low, with the selloff following a 2.2% drop for the Philadelphia Semiconductor index on Monday.

The Saudi Pro League (SPL) has confirmed the fixture schedule for the 2026-27 Roshn Saudi League season, with the campaign set to begin on August 13, 2026, and conclude on May 29, 2027.
The 34-round season will feature 306 matches, with the fixture list finalised on Friday following a workshop attended by all clubs. During the session, the SPL presented the scheduling methodology and the wider sporting calendar, while clubs were also invited to submit requests regarding match sequencing and scheduling before the fixtures were approved.
The 2026-27 calendar has been developed against the backdrop of an exceptionally demanding season, with eight RSL clubs competing across four international competitions, alongside FIFA international windows, Saudi Arabia national team commitments and the Kingdom's hosting of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
As a result of these overlapping commitments, only 102 available matchdays were available to accommodate the league's 306 fixtures.
To ensure a balanced and competitive schedule, the fixture list was created using 10 key scheduling criteria. Among the most significant are that no club will play more than two consecutive home or away matches, while every club will play one home and one away fixture across the opening and closing two rounds of the 2026-27 campaign.

Commodity traders are having the rug pulled out from under one of their biggest paydays yet as refiners start bypassing oil and traders and buying Venezuelan crude directly, according to Reuters. Refiners and major oil-producing firms are rapidly gaining market share in Venezuelan crude by locking in direct supply contracts with state-run Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), bypassing the global middlemen and commodity trading houses such as Trafigura and Vitol that previously dominated the ***** e.
Six months after traders reopened Venezuela's oil market, Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) and India's Reliance Industries have already signed direct supply agreements, with Valero (NYSE:VLO) and Thailand's Tipco expected to follow.
Previously, Vitol and Trafigura enjoyed first-mover advantage, managing to become dominant in Venezuelan crude marketing because of their exclusive U.S. government licenses, pre-existing logistical infrastructure and historical ties to PDVSA. Following major political shifts in Venezuela in January, the U.S. administration brokered a deal to manage and sell the country's oil. The U.S. Department of the Treasury issued special, long-term licenses specifically to Vitol and Trafigura until June 2027, effectively giving the traders a temporary monopoly. The pair collectively moved more than 100 million barrels of crude over a six-month period while other global firms remained legally locked out.
Their unmatched logistics also gave them a clear upper hand. After all, global trading houses have the fleet capacity and global reach to quickly deploy tankers and reroute large volumes of crude. They could absorb massive storage and shipping costs in a difficult market, using floating storage facilities in places like Malaysia to break up bulk shipments. Barring 15-year-old JJ Gabriel coming in for England Under-20 striker Ethan Wheatley, who has a minor calf problem, Manchester United's 25-man squad for their first two pre-season games in Helsinki and Trondheim has stayed the same.
That surely means anyone from the academy who has a chance of breaking into Michael Carrick's senior squad consistently this season will come from that group.

MANILA, July 22 (Reuters) - Australia's foreign minister said on Wednesday that Asian countries face a choice in how they respond to instances of aggressive conduct in the South China Sea that were of concern to Canberra.
A recent encounter in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines was a real concern, in addition to being destabilising and risky, Penny Wong said on the sidelines of a meeting led by the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN.
"We are concerned about some of the aggression we are seeing," Wong said. "We are concerned about some of the destabilising conduct we are seeing."
"The countries of the region have a choice to make about how we all respond to that."
Wong was referring to an altercation on Monday in which Manila said one of its navy personnel was struck on the head. Beijing accused Manila of provoking the incident, resulting in both countries summoning each other's ambassadors.

July 17 (Reuters) - Global equity funds attracted inflows for an eighth consecutive week through July 15, as investor risk appetite was lifted by a strong start to the earnings season and cooler U.S. inflation data that eased expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes.
Investors made net purchases of $12.46 billion in global equity funds during the week, following a hefty $48.35 billion in net buying the previous week, LSEG Lipper data showed.
Leading Wall Street banks including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley reported robust earnings earlier this week, alongside ASML, a dominant supplier of AI chipmaking equipment.
By region, Europe led equity fund inflows with net purchases of $9.49 billion during the week. Asian funds also drew $5.4 billion in inflows, while investors divested roughly $4.8 billion from U.S. funds.
Among sector funds, technology attracted $3.37 billion, though that was the smallest inflow in three weeks. Financials and healthcare funds also posted weekly inflows of $567 million and $558 million, respectively.

NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuters) - A New York state judge dismissed a lawsuit by a former JPMorgan Chase banker who in graphic terms said his former supervisor coerced him into sex and demanded his submissiveness, though the lawsuit is expected to be refiled in federal court.
Chirayu Rana, the former banker, will pay some legal fees of JPMorgan and his onetime colleague Lorna Hajdini as a condition of the dismissal, Justice Dakota Ramseur wrote on Thursday.
The dismissal, which Rana had requested, does not affect Hajdini's defamation countersuit against him. Her lawsuit remains in the state court in Manhattan.
Rana, who was a vice president in leveraged finance, accused Hajdini of using her seniority to coerce him into non-consensual ****** ual activity over several months.
The complaint said Hajdini used racially derogatory language to threaten Rana, who is of Asian descent. It also said she raped and drugged him, claimed she "owned" him, and threatened to sabotage his career if he didn't fulfill her ****** ual demands.

A joint statement issued by the 14 nations said they rejected "destabilizing" actions in the disputed waters that threaten regional stability. The 27-nation European Union released a separate statement, reaffirming the ruling as a "landmark decision in the peaceful settlement of disputes."
The statements commemorated a July 12, 2016, arbitration ruling by a tribunal established in The Hague under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, saying the landmark decision is "is final and legally binding."
China reiterated Sunday that the ruling was "null and void and has no binding force" and Beijing "neither accepts nor recognizes it."
China refused to join the arbitration initiated by the Philippines in 2013 after a tense standoff in the contested waters a year earlier that ended with Beijing effectively seizing a disputed shoal.

Myanmar has appointed former North Korea coach Jorn Andersen to lead its men's national football team, the country's football federation said on Thursday.
The Norwegian, whose CV also includes a stint as coach of Hong Kong, signed the two-year contract on Wednesday, the federation said in a statement.
"I am delighted to be in Myanmar," Andersen, 63, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
"I will work to help develop Myanmar players and achieve as much success as possible with the national team."

Private-equity firm Apheon has acquired Alma, the new French food group created by combining Foo Seng and Varachaux.
The deal, struck for an undisclosed sum, comes just months after Asian snacks business Foo Seng and meal-components supplier Varachaux were merged to form Alma.
In a statement today (7 July), Apheon said the deal "marks the beginning of a new phase of growth for Alma", pointing to its "proven playbook for scaling businesses through targeted consolidation" in European markets.
Combined, Alma employs around 115 people and generates around €40m ($45.7m) in revenue.
The company supplies to wholesalers, foodservice operators and retailers, primarily in France.
