Pittsburgh's preseason ended in heartbreak Thursday night, as the Buffalo Bills scored late to beat the Steelers 28-27 at Highmark Stadium. Head coach Mike McCarthy watched his roster compete one final time before decision day arrived.
By Friday afternoon, the mood inside the building turned serious, and the first wave of cuts landed hard. What happens next will shape how Pittsburgh's sideline looks in Week 1.
The Pittsburgh Steelers released 11 players Friday, their first move in what will be a busy weekend of roster decisions. The team must reach the 53-man limit, and multiple reports indicate the front office has until Sunday at 8 p.m. ET to finish the job.
The August 28 list included tight end Jaheim Bell, offensive linemen Greg Crippen and Jaylon Guilbeau, and defensive backs Jack Henderson, Brandon Hill and Daryl Porter. Wide receivers Jakobie Keeney-James, Tamon Lynum, Cornell Powell and Isaiah Winstead were also let go, along with running back Alex Tecza.

On Monday, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan continued to churn the bottom of the team's roster — signing tight end Ethan Conner and inside linebacker Jaheim Thomas while waiving center Jim Bonifas and cornerback Ahmari Harvey.
The moves come after Dolphins rookie linebacker Trey Moore suffered a non-disclosed injury during Saturday's preseason contest against the New York Giants that will keep the defender on the shelf for some time.
Miami's website had this to say about Thomas:
"Thomas appeared in 10 games with the Louisville Kings of the United Football League during the 2026 UFL season, recording 64 tackles (42 solo), 0.5 sack, 1.0 tackle for loss and two passes defensed. He also appeared in two postseason games and helped the Kings capture the 2026 United Bowl **** le. Thomas finished his collegiate career at Wisconsin (2024) after spending time at Arkansas (2023) and Cincinnati (2020-22). CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- As the second week of fall camp gets started, Corey Parker is as excited about his room as ever.
Parker returns strong athletes like Matthew Bailey and Jaheim Clarke, who are poised to teach newbies like Jakwon Morris and Nick Hankins the ropes, something Parker says his returners can do well with their different backgrounds and leadership styles.
"They understand that every day is a new day," Parker said. "I can't get too high, can't get too low, and with great leadership in a room like Jaheim Clarke, you have that. And so you see younger guys coming along really, really good, because he doesn't let one rep go by that he's not talking to them when they're coming off the field."
Clarke returned to illinois this season after starting in eight games with 21 solo tackles..
