For months, economists and retailers have warned about the financial strain facing lower- and middle-income consumers. Higher earners, on the other hand, have largely been sheltered from the effects of the rising costs of living.
But that may be changing.
A growing number of CEOs and industry insiders, from retailers as varied as Walmart and ThredUp, have said they're seeing shifts in the behavior of consumers earning $100,000 a year or more.
Dollar General's CEO Todd Vasos is the latest to join that growing chorus.

The Justice Department has charged dozens of people for suspected fraud related to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said Tuesday.
Speaking with reporters in the White House Rose Garden, Blanche said that between mid-June and September, federal prosecutors from across the country helped facilitate the arrests of 160 criminal defendants, including around 80 who were newly charged over suspected COVID fraud in Missouri and neighboring states.
The suspected crimes involved more than $245 million in losses, Blanche said.

Browns' head coach Todd Monken channeled his inner Dan Hurley in today's postgame press conference. After the Browns were thoroughly beaten and flat-out embarrassed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Monken sent out a warning to the rest of the league.
In his opening statement, Monken said, "You better get us now," in reference to the Browns potentially not having much skill on their roster this year. Now, I am usually all for a coach having confidence and, more importantly, being vocal about it, but this may not have been the time or place for this.
The Browns were zero percent competitive on Sunday.
They showed a little bit of life for four plays on offense before they were totally incompetent on that side of the football, only to be coupled with a horrific performance on defense to boot.
If that game today were played 100 times, the Jaguars would win 99 of them, and that's simply thanks to the law of averages. The Browns were horrible today, and frankly, there is not all that much to be optimistic about going forward.

The Cleveland Browns are set to kick off their 2026 regular season Sunday afternoon when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road. The team announced on Friday that they would be starting two rookies on their offensive line, ruling out Teven Jenkins and announcing that third-round pick Austin Barber would get the start at right guard.

As continuous inflation squeezes household budgets, the discount retail sector should potentially benefit across the board, with middle- and lower-income consumers looking for value driving foot traffic into value chains. That's roughly what happened in the second-quarter reports from Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) and Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR), both of which were released in late August. Both retailers outperformed expectations, though only one company's stock was rewarded for this.
Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) reported second-quarter results on August 27 that exceeded expectations, and shares rose more than 6.5% in premarket trading. Net sales increased 5.2% to $11.29 billion, surpassing the $11.2 billion market forecast, while diluted EPS came in at $2.48, up 33.3% year-over-year and well above the $2.01 ******* ysts projected. Same-store sales increased 3.5%, driven by a 2.0% increase in customer traffic and a 1.5% increase in average transaction amount, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of traffic growth and the sixth consecutive quarter of positive comps across all four merchandise categories.
Management improved their full-year estimate across the board: same-store sales growth is now expected to be 2.5% to 2.9%, up from 2.2% to 2.7% before, while full-year EPS guidance increased to $7.80-$8.00 from $7.20-$7.45. Tariff refunds, a lower LIFO provision, and improved shrink and damages helped increase the gross margin by 127 basis points to 32.6%. It was an extra special weekend for Ree Drummond and her daughter Paige Drummond.
The Food Network star left her famed Oklahoma ranch and jet off to Dallas, where she and her newly-engaged daughter shopped for wedding dresses.
In addition to Paige, who got engaged to fiancé David Andersen last month after a year of dating, The Pioneer Woman founder and her husband Ladd Drummond are also parents to daughter Alex, 26, who is expecting her first child with husband Mauricio Scott, sons Bryce, 20, and Todd, 19, plus they welcomed Jamar, 20, into the family in 2018 after the couple became his foster parents.
Ree took to her blog over the weekend to write all about her day wedding dress shopping with Paige, with the help of her older sister Alex plus her fiancé David's mom and sister.

The Browns and their fan base have not been on the same page when it comes to the team's starting quarterback.
Before Watson was officially named QB1, he was booed when he appeared and played poorly during the team's second preseason game last month. That set Watson off, with the quarterback saying fans were being "disrespectful," and the reaction had nothing to do with his performance.
Head coach Todd Monken has maintained that everyone will be fine if the Browns are playing winning football. But he admitted in an interview with 92.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning that after the second preseason game, there was some question about Watson's confidence and ability to play if he's not supported.
"I mean, after that game — I'll just say during the game and then after the game, certainly Deshaun was not in a great headspace. Let's be real honest about it," Monken told hosts Ken Carman and Anthony Lima. "He said it after the game, he was frustrated, and didn't particularly play well. And we don't coach well and call it well around him. So, we certainly all have to own that.
"I looked at it more along the lines of a speed ****** p and just a blip on the radar more than the norm of what I had seen over the course of the five months being here, in terms of his confidence, how hard he's worked to get back to where he's at today. And he did, he came to me right after that, him and I had a good conversation, and he said, 'I'm not sure I handled that the right way. But I did have things that were on my heart.' And I asked him, I said, 'Do you feel like you've gotten rid of it?' Because it's one thing to say it. It's another thing to really believe it, that OK, I needed to get this off my chest, it's over, I just want to go out there and play great football. I've worked awfully hard to get back."

Former U.S. Olympian David Hearn and his attorneys returned to court to urge the judge who previously oversaw his Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism case to formally bar federal prosecutors from seeking new charges against him.
In late July, the D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office moved to dismiss the criminal case against Hearn in a filing that acknowledged damage to the Reflecting Pool "was the result of flawed installation" and not the work of vandals -- prompting outrage from President Donald Trump.

If you're excited for Nico Iamaleava's 2026 season, you're not alone. Ahead of Iamaleava and the UCLA Bruins season debut on Saturday, college football ****** yst Todd McShay appeared on the Bill Simmons Podcast and gushed about UCLA's signal caller.
The former five-star recruit is flying a bit under the radar after a 2025 season where the Bruins offense struggled and the team finished 3-9 as a whole. Even amidst the struggles for the team, Iamaleava flashed moments of brilliance.
"I don't think people nationally have a clue how good Nico is," McShay said. "He's got a toughness about him that I didn't expect. He's got an ability to bounce-back from mistakes. This guy loves ball, you can't hide that on tape."
Even with those intangibles, it's the combination of Iamaleava's size and speed for the quarterback position. That skillset not only makes him an exciting college quarterback, it makes him a potential option at the NFL level.
"A 6'5" gazelle when he takes off to run. Then you watch the ability to, at 6'5", make guys miss in small ****** es," McShay said of the UCLA quarterback. "There's nothing he can't do. Now his deep ball accuracy was atrocious at Tennessee. I'm interested to see this year if he can improve that area."

The starting right guard position for the Cleveland Browns is currently up in the air, with veteran Teven Jenkins battling an injury, though he was able to return to practice on Wednesday after missing Monday's practice. Wednesday's practice is Cleveland's final practice of the week before a short break, ahead of next week's season opener.

Aaron Turner, Jonathan **** inga's agent, spoke about the contracts he and his client chose to take and ones they had turned down. **** inga's former teammate, Draymond Green, took issue with it.
Jonathan **** inga has signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a two-year, $13 million deal. The former Golden State Warriors man left money on the table in the process.
Kuminga's exit from the Warriors was less than ideal, but the team had offered him a 3-year, $75 million contract which he turned down. And his agent, Aaron Turner, recently addressed this in public.
Whatever decisions NBA stars and their agents make are entirely up to them. But Turner's comments made **** inga's earnings a larger conversation, something which Draymond Green doesn't like.

Jonathan **** inga has signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a two-year, $13 million deal. The former Golden State Warriors man left money on the table in the process.
Kuminga's exit from the Warriors was less than ideal, but the team had offered him a 3-year, $75 million contract which he turned down. And his agent, Aaron Turner, recently addressed this in public.
Whatever decisions NBA stars and their agents make are entirely up to them. But Turner's comments made **** inga's earnings a larger conversation, something which Draymond Green doesn't like.
