NEW YORK — This time, Gunnar Henderson came through in the clutch.
The Baltimore Orioles' star shortstop hasn't often been the source of big hits in key spots this season, a down year in several regards. Henderson, who still has yet to collect a walk-off hit in his career, entered Monday's game with a .674 OPS in close-and-late situations
That moment will have to wait, but Henderson enjoyed the next best thing Monday with a go-ahead home run in the eighth to help Baltimore beat the New York Mets, 2-1. With the score tied and the Orioles looking for a big hit all night, Henderson took right-hander Dedniel Núñez deep for his 23rd home run of the season and his first since Aug. 30.
Baltimore (73-78) won the series opener to give Pete Alonso a happy homecoming in his first game back at Citi Field since the Orioles signed him away from the Mets in free agency. The home team treated Alonso, who spent seven seasons in Queens, to a scoreboard tribute video and multiple standing ovations. Entering the game sitting on 299 career home runs, he went 0 for 3 with a walk.
With the win, the Orioles pulled back to within three games of the third American League wild-card spot. Their playoff odds have dwindled to the single digits, but Baltimore is not yet eliminated with 11 games left to go.

Pete Alonso returned to Citi Field on Monday with the Baltimore Orioles after seven seasons with the New York Mets, for whom he was arguably the face of the team.
Batting second for Baltimore, Alonso received a standing ovation from the crowd as his walk-up song "Layla" played over the ballpark loudspeakers. Alonso acknowledged the cheers by taking off his helmet and tipping it to the crowd.
Before the first pitch, fans chanted Alonso's name in appreciation for his seven seasons in Queens. The Mets also played a tribute video to their longtime slugger as fans and his former teammates applauded.
The chants continued as the game started and Alonso flew out to right field in his first at-bat.
In his seven seasons with the Mets, Alonso recorded a .253/.341/.516 slash line wth 264 home runs and 712 RBI. He won National League Rookie of the Year honors in 2019, when he hit 53 homers.

Kelly Osbourne loves her mother, but she is not pretending they agree on everything.
Asked directly about Sharon Osbourne's support for British activist Tommy Robinson during an interview with Attitude at London's National Television Awards, Kelly gave an equally direct answer: "I don't agree with my mum, no."
Kelly acknowledged that political disagreements can be uncomfortable inside a family. She said Sharon is entitled to her own opinions, but made clear that her mother's position is "not for me."

On Aug. 27, 18-year-old Addisyn Baird was in Hartford, Connecticut, preparing to play in a hockey tournament when she received a life-changing phone call.
The call was from Justine Siegal, commissioner of the Women's Pro Baseball League (WPBL). The Los Angeles Queens needed another player after one of their outfielders left to play for Curaçao's national team and the team wanted to sign Baird as a replacement for the remainder of the season.
"How fast can you get here?" Siegal asked.
The next morning, Baird played in one hockey game. Then she and her dad jumped in the car and drove more than 20 hours to Springfield, Illinois, where the WPBL plays all its games. On Sept. 3, Baird made her professional debut for the Queens, whose roster includes former Little League World Series phenom Mo'ne Davis.
Baird is the only current high school student playing in the inaugural season of the WPBL, which launched in August with four teams. The WPBL playoffs are underway this month, with two best-of-three semifinal series preceding a best-of-five championship series scheduled to begin Sept. 16.

DELMAR - The Columbia football team opened a lot of eyes with its Week 1 victory over Queensbury. For those still wondering whether that win was an aberration, the Blue Devils showed Bethlehem Thursday evening that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Columbia shook off a slow start and registered another impressive all-around performance in posting a 31-0 Class A road victory over the Eagles.
It seemed apropos that Columbia senior two-way lineman Adam Burek departed the field after the game with a sledgehammer draped over his right shoulder. The Blue Devils sure brought the muscle Thursday.
The Blue Devils (2-0 overall, 2-0 Class A) were coming off a resounding 48-27 Week 1 triumph over Queensbury, a team that knocked Columbia out of the Class A playoffs in 2025 and 2024. Thursday, Columbia generated a 443-138 edge in offense and never allowed Bethlehem (0-2, 0-2) to reach the red zone.
"It feels great. We had a great offseason with all the guys. We had a good camp and we have really just brought it together the last two weeks," Burek said.

Jessica Pegula has advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals after winning back-to-back matches over the holiday weekend.
The Buffalo native rallied past Canada's Leylah Fernandez in the third round on Friday, overcoming a slow start to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
Pegula acknowledged she is never comfortable facing Fernandez but credited her ability to dig deep after dropping the opening set.
"I knew today, especially the way that I started, I was going to have to dig deep," Pegula told U.S. Open reporters. "I had to find something in the second set to turn it around, but she's a great player, so that was very hard."
Pegula then secured her spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Romania's Sorana Cirstea. The match featured some early struggles, but Pegula closed it out on her third match point when Cirstea sent a forehand long.

I'll never forget the first time I encountered Grindr. In 2009, I was enjoying happy hour at Cobalt, a since-shuttered gay bar in D.C.'s Dupont Circle. My friend, spying the mustard skull on an iPhone (first released in 2007!) from across the room, nudged me. "That's the gay hookup app," he whispered scandalously.
When I got over the stigma of downloading Grindr, I was astounded how easy it was to flirt with nearby queer men — and to network. During RuPaul's Drag Race season 3, I changed my username to "Team Jujubee," a nod to a frontrunner, which helped me find a viewing-party friend in my neighborhood. When I lived in New York, I would sometimes engage in friendly chats with the app's gay founder, Joel Simkhai, who'd pop up on my grid from time to time.
For good and ill, tech and our relationship with it has changed a lot since the aughts. Gay apps are no longer a battery-draining novelty; for many, they're as quotidian as texting, a digital town square where a Madonna takeover and catfishing are commonplace. Many, like Grindr, are also now owned by straight people. And no need to comb the upper reaches of Cablevision's channels to find Drag Race anymore — there's an app for that too (several, in fact, depending on the region and season).

JBM Packaging has opened a 52,500ft² site in Lebanon, Ohio, US, approximately a mile from its main base, as it expands its contract packaging, kitting and filling activities.
The facility will support up to 50 additional jobs.
It will house operations that had previously been run from rented premises in Queensgate, where JBM began its contract packaging business in 2021.
The new building has 28ft clear-height ceilings, dense warehouse racking and a layout intended to improve the movement of materials and completed goods.
JBM said the move lifts total machine capacity by 50%, giving it scope to handle a larger share of customers' packaging requirements, including planning, production and distribution.

America's Tommy Paul wowed fans at the U.S. Open on Wednesday when he chased down the ball and hit it around the net in a stunning shot during his second-round win over Croatia's Dino Prizmic.
In the fourth — and what wound up being the final — set of the match, Paul caught up with a shot hit far to his right, diving into a chair to make the save as he successfully hit the ball around the post.
The around-the-net shot, while difficult to pull off, indeed counted, joining a list of others that have gone down at the iconic tournament in Queens over the years.
Tennis accounts on social media were inawe at the play by Paul including The Tennis Letter, who called it "THE SHOT OF THE TOURNAMENT."
Following his win, Paul said he was worried about putting the ball in first and "then not dying" as he risked a potential injury by diving into the chair.

Just four miles away, Eala beat the United States' Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2 Tuesday night in her 2026 U.S. Open debut. On Thursday, she will take on Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova in Louis Armstrong Stadium, where a new run of posters from Tiu's studio, Bad Student, will feature in the crowd.
Eala has been making tennis history for years, representing a country that loves to show up for its stars. In August, the 21-year-old became the first Filipino player to win a WTA Tour singles ****** le, beating No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the D.C. Open final. In Washington, just as in Toronto, Dubai, Melbourne and other cities all over the world, the Filipino diaspora came out in droves to support their new heroine.
Tuesday night in Queens was no different, as Eala fans filled the 14,000-capacity Louis Armstrong Stadium with Filipino flags and roaring cheers.

Frank Warren says that Anthony Joshua is yet to sign the contract for an all-British blockbuster fight with Tyson Fury as the wait goes on for an official announcement.
Fury suggested on Tuesday that confirmation of the hotly-anticipated showdown was close, posting a mocked-up image of himself facing off with Joshua above the words "New York City" on Instagram.
The expectation is that the bout will be hosted at the world-famous Madison Square Garden, as is the desire of Turki Alalshikh and Saudi state-owned promotional company Sela, though Joshua's camp prefer Wembley Stadium as the venue, which would allow for the element of a home crowd.
Warren, however, says that location is no longer a factor for Fury who has penned a contract that does not hinge on where the fight takes place, with the Queensberry chief insisting that "The Gypsy King" is now just waiting on Joshua's signature.
"The latest is Joshua's not signed yet," Warren said.

That gap, between cultural impact and cultural credit, is precisely what Connor Lim is trying to close. So, we brought him onto the latest episode of the FROM THE CULTURE podcast to better understand how.
Lim is the co-founder and CEO of the International Dance League, the world's first global professional dance league. Six city-based teams, a regular season, a championship, and, as of this past summer, a global media rights deal with ESPN. IDL grew out of STEEZY, an online dance education platform he built after a childhood in Queens, completely consumed by the craft. For most people, dance is considered an art form, but Lim sees it as that and much more: a sport. Consider the battle traditions of breaking, krumping, and voguing, and Lim's perspective no longer feels like much of a stretch. In fact, breakdancing made its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games as an official event, a testament to dance's competitive nature. It's this thesis that fuels Lim's ambition for the IDL to make dance as big of a sport as basketball, football, or baseball. However, unlike athletes, dancers have never sat inside a structure that captures the value they generate.

This is a double-edged sword because, even as an art, dance misses out on this value capture. Music has royalties, touring, and publishing rights. These are all mechanisms by which value accrues back to the creator, so an ecosystem forms, and the people who make it are remembered and rewarded. Dance, for all its cultural reach and resonance, has no such machinery. So, knowing the originator served no structural purpose, and the credit simply evaporated. Lim put it plainly: people act as they are incentivized to act, so he's built the IDL on a system of incentives.
The late Charlie Munger, longtime vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, famously stated, "Show me the incentive, and I will show you the outcome," emphasizing that an organization's operational reality and culture are direct reflections of its underlying incentive system. A woman randomly stabbed two people in New York City's Times Square on Monday, killing one woman, and then was fatally shot by police, according to officials.
The shooting happened just before 4:30 p.m. next to a New York Police Department substation, just outside One Times Square, the building that hosts the city's annual New Year's Eve ball drop celebration. It is one of the most heavily touristed and policed spots in all of New York.
The 49-year-old woman from Queens pulled out two knives from a shopping bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man who had just come out of the subway station and was waiting to cross the street with his wife, striking him in the abdomen, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.
Seconds later, the woman stabbed a 32-year-old woman also in the abdomen, Tisch said. Both victims were taken to the hospital. The woman died and the man is in stable condition, according to police.
Police didn't say if the victims were tourists visiting the city or residents.

NEW YORK — As the clock struck midnight in Queens, Sofia Kenin and Venus Williams had yet to play a single point on Arthur Ashe Stadium, as the previous five-set match between Novak Djokovic and Mariano Navone went four hours and 36 minutes, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion being sent packing in the first round of a major for the first time in 20 years.
The ladies took the court a mere 10 minutes after the calendar turned to Aug. 31, and when the crowd had finished rubbing their eyes, yawning, and trying to stay awake, Kenin dispatched the 46-year-old two-time US Open champion 6-2, 7-6.
Because of the late start, the match was supposed to be moved to Louis Armstrong Stadium, but both players said they wanted to stay at the original venue at Ashe.
Williams was making her 26th main-draw appearance at the US Open and still had a doubles tournament to play in with her sister, Serena, after receiving a wild card to compete, just as in her singles entry. She was also making her 96th Grand Slam appearance, the most in the Open Era.

It takes a truly exceptional affordability crisis to put Bill Ackman and Zohran Mamdani on the same side of the barricade. Yet this month the billionaire hedge fund manager and New York's democratic socialist mayor found common cause over an unlikely grievance: the cost of getting into the US Open.
Ackman took objection to the cost of a grounds pass listed for $363. Mamdani responded to the broader uproar by securing 1,000 tickets for New York residents at $100 apiece, prompting more than 336,000 people to apply for them. Somewhere between the two sits the uneasy economics of the modern US Open, where a $65 ticket with no guaranteed seat on any court can fetch more than five times that amount on the tournament's resale marketplace.
For generations the US Open has traded on its reputation as the people's slam. Take the 7 train to Queens, buy a grounds pass and spend the day milling about within a few feet of the world's best tennis players. But as the final major of the season begins in earnest on Sunday, that democratic ideal has been confronted with a basic problem: more and more of the people are being priced out.
"The US Open is owned by the USTA which is a non-profit," Ackman wrote on social media. "The idea that a day one ground pass is $363 is absurd. The USTA's mission is to promote the sport of tennis. How is a $363 ground pass consistent with this mission?"

Moses Itauma has a lot of changes to make if he's to become a boxing world champion in the future.
Itauma, 21, had the chance Saturday at London's O2 Arena to become the youngest heavyweight world champion since Mike Tyson. All he had to do was beat veteran contender Filip Hrgovic and claim the vacant IBF heavyweight world ******* le.
Despite winning the first round, knocking Hrgovic down in the second, and dominating many of the subsequent rounds with his dazzling offense and fast hands, Itauma nonetheless showed his inexperience, according to his promoter Frank Warren. He fell in love with his power and abandoned his jab, the Queensberry Promotions founder said.
Itauma (14-1, 12 KOs) ultimately punched himself out and lost in the ninth round, when he could barely stand on his own accord. He threw slower, more sluggish shots, and he was there for the taking. Hrgovic, 34, simply needed only to survive in order to claim the win once it was given to him.
"Moses started the fight really well — controlling the fight with his jab, but it didn't work out for him," Warren, Itauma's longtime promoter, said post-fight.

Barnsley have re-signed full-back Ziyad Larkeche on loan from Queens Park Rangers for the rest of the season.
Larkeche spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Oakwell when he was a Fulham player.
The Frenchman, 23, joined QPR in 2023 after he was released by Fulham and spent the 2024-25 season at Dundee.
"Ziyad adds real depth to our options at left-back, and he's someone who enjoyed his time with the club last time he was here, so we know he wants to be part of this," head coach Daniel Stendel told the club website.

Hunter Brown (3-3, 3.51 ERA) takes the ball for the Astros tonight. Shoulder issues have limited Brown this season to just 14 starts but his last two have met the expectations the Astros have for their ace. In 10.2 innings, the righthander has struck out nine and allowed three runs. Houston, though, lost both those games and have in fact lost each of his last four starts. The Mets are sending Christian Scott (4-3, 3.73) to the mound. The Mets have won the righthander's last four starts despite so-so outings by Scott. Last Saturday against the White Sox, Scott lasted just 4.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits. The week before he allowed three runs over 6.1 innings against the Nationals.

Miss USA has crowned its new winner!

On Thursday, Aug. 27, the organization hosted the 75th edition of the national pageant, where 50 contestants competed for the **** le at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. This year, the pageant was themed "75 Years of Icons" in honor of the pageant's historic year.

Justus Kelley, 31, who was Miss Virginia USA 2026, took home the **** le, with last year's winner, Audrey Eckert, 24, bestowing the crown on her successor. Kelley's win is historic, as she will be the first-ever mother to hold the Miss USA **** le, following the organization's rule changes in 2023, which saw the end of the age cap on contestants and permitted contestants who are mothers. Kelley will also be the first married woman to ever hold the **** le of Miss USA as well.
The pageant celebrated the women of Miss USA, who have held crowns for the past 75 years. Just before the **** le was announced, the pageant invited legacy queens to the stage to be thanked for representing the crown over the last five years.
