For around 15 hours, immigration detention officers kept Raúl Suárez Herrero confined in a cage slightly larger than a phone booth, where he feared snakes and endured mosquitoes in the middle of Florida swampland, the former detainee alleged.
Suárez, 59, told José Díaz-Balart in an interview for Noticias Telemundo’s “Ahora 360” that he was forced into the cage, measuring 7 feet, 9 inches high and 4 feet, 3 inches square, for praying out loud for an ill young man at “Alligator Alcatraz,” an ICE detention site.
“I feel like I was in ****** ,” Suárez later told NBC News in a phone interview from Mexico, where he was deported.
Suárez spoke days after a Department of Homeland Security watchdog confirmed the use of the phone booth-sized cages at the now-shuttered Florida detention camp in a Sept. 11 report.
“The use of such restrictive ****** es is highly unconventional and does not align with standards for humane treatment,” the report said.

The two rituals have unfolded in parallel since the Christian church's pastor, Sarah Lucas, preached a sermon condemning Arapaho ceremonial ways.
The Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone Tribes that share the reservation have made clear that Lucas is no longer welcome. Lucas, who is not Native American but owns the land under her church, says she isn't going anywhere. The standoff tests the boundaries of religious freedom and the right of a tribal nation to govern according to its own values and protocols.

A string of miracle rescues in recent days has kept hopes alive that more people might still be saved from the catastrophe of August 26 when a glacier collapsed, sending a mass of mud and rock crashing into a river along the border between Nepal and China's Tibet. The resulting floods washed away villages, snapped highways like twigs, and buried homes in the mud.

GENAZZANO, Italy (AP) — Pope Leo XIV returned Monday to a sanctuary where he prayed just after his election and revealed a permanent sign of his devotion to the place: a fresco depicting him praying that now adorns an upper cornice of the basilica.
Leo unveiled the portrait before celebrating Mass with his fellow Augustinian brothers at the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in the medieval village of Genazzano south of Rome. He joins a handful of past popes whose visits to the sanctuary were commemorated with portraits that adorn its walls, going back to Pope Urban VIII in 1630.
Leo visited the sanctuary on May 10, 2025, just two days after his election and in his first outing as pope. The former Robert Prevost had been there many times before, since the place has special significance for the pope's Augustinian religious order.
The sanctuary is managed by Augustinian friars and has been a place of pilgrimage since the 15th century. Leo's namesake, Pope Leo XIII, elevated it to a minor basilica and expanded the adjacent convent in the early 1900s.

On the seventh play of Tuesday morning's joint practice, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw a pass downfield to receiver Quentin Johnston, who made a heck of a grab while also being interfered with by 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir.
While everyone was celebrating downfield, the training staff rushed to Biadasz, who was on the ground in pain and favoring his left leg. During the play to Johnston, left guard Kayode Awosika blocked 49ers defensive lineman Sebastian Valdez into Biadasz's leg.
The Chargers center was helped up by two trainers and onto the cart. As he sat on it, Biadasz hit the cart three times in frustration. Herbert and multiple players came over to offer their support.

The 87-year-old college basketball personality shared the message on X, noting that he's responding well to treatments.
"Just received good news from my oncologist that my bloodwork results were very good," Vitale wrote. "I keep (praying) that the Immuno Therapy treatments are very effective in wiping out the cancer."

Former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay is out of the hospital after last week's collapse and working to regain strength for his newest cancer treatment, his daughter announced.
Shay Thomas said last week on Instagram that the 12-year NHL veteran, who has been dealing with Grade 4 colon cancer that has spread to his liver, was taken to the hospital after fainting at his house, suffering facial injuries. She said doctors determined he had severe dehydration because he had been feeling sick and was having trouble eating.
Thomas provided a new update on Duguay, 69, after his release from the hospital.
"He still isn't feeling his best or eating much, but he is taking it day by day, trying to get down some soup and slowly regain his strength," she wrote.
"Our main focus is getting him strong enough to travel back to Orange County and return to City of Hope. His next treatment will be Bizengri, also known as zenocutuzumab-zbco, a targeted therapy that works by blocking certain signals that can help cancer cells grow. We are praying this will be the treatment his body responds to."

Real Housewives of Orange County alum Jeana Keough is nearing the end of her tongue cancer treatment, but she's making clear the fight is far from over.
According to a report Page Six published Thursday, July 30, Keough, 70, discussed her prognosis via email, writing, "It's upsetting to know that even after all this treatment, I still only have a 40 to 60 percent cure rate within the next five years. We're just praying that I'm on the good side of that coin flip."
She continued, "I can see the finish line now, but I'm hearing it's a long climb to recovery and that I'll likely have the feeding tube for two to six months."

90 Day Fiancé couple Jenny Slatten and Sumit Singh are pushing back on claims that her amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis has worsened to the point where she has become dependent on her husband.
Slatten, 68, and Singh, 38, recently addressed the rumors in a video shared to Instagram on Monday, July 27.

Grassroots sports clubs across Shropshire say they are struggling to keep their pitches alive because of the hot, dry weather.
Telford Hornets Rugby Club are one of many who said the pitches they play on are dying because spending to irrigate would cost them thousands of pounds, money which they do not have.
Since 15 June, most of England has recorded less than 10mm of rain, which has meant many clubs are praying for a sustained downpour.
The club's chairman, Neil Thomas, said they have had to learn strategies to keep their pitches in as good condition as possible, so they can continue playing on them.

As we hit the later rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the upcoming 2026-27 club season draws ever nearer. We take a look the clubs that may selfishly be relieved at the early World Cup exits from their players.
It’s hard to conceive of, given that we all remain in thrall to the 2026 World Cup, but the English Premier League kicks off in less than two months on August 21. Hot on its heels is Ligue 1, which starts August 23, and Germany’s Bundesliga, getting underway on August 28.
For players on teams which go deep in this summer’s tournament, there is precious little time to be found between international duty and reporting back to their club teams to begin the arduous slog of another season. A consequence of our now seemingly year-round soccer schedule, this jam-packed calendar had drawn the ire of players, coaches, and fans alike. Your favorite players are frequently going 90-plus minutes, twice a week, 11 months out of the year.
This physical and mental redlining jacks up the risk of injury and burnout, but what are clubs to do? Nearly each fixture carries such importance that it is nearly impossible to introduce any sort of NBA-style “load management” into the equation.
So while the world’s biggest clubs will be no doubt proud to see their stars shining on the international stage, you’d have to imagine that managers and sporting directors back home have their fingers crossed behind their backs, hoping and praying for their top players to make an early exit from North America and get themselves a healthy recovery period.

South Korea’s Kim Min-jae became the only player that Bayern Munich sent to the World Cup to fail to make it to the knockout stage.
Bayern sent a total of 18 players to the tournament, with one of them, Jonas Urbig, being a training goalkeeper for Germany. It was initially 19 before Lennart Karl withdrew from the Germany squad with an injury. Although their time at Bayern has come to an end, Nicolas Jackson and Leon Goretzka are included in said number.
The representative countries are as follows – Germany, Austria, France, ***** an, South Korea, Croatia, England, Colombia, Canada, and Senegal. Among them, Germany, France, England, and Colombia won their groups. Austria, ***** an, Croatia, and Canada finished runners up, and Senegal made it through as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
However, Korea failed to take advantage of the easiest group they had ever received at a World Cup. They started out strongly by beating the Czech Republic, but a drab defeat to co-hosts Mexico and a shocking loss to South Africa saw them praying for results elsewhere to help them into the knockouts. Their hopes were in vain, as only one out of their three required scenarios came to fruition, and the Taegeuk Warriors ended up meekly packing their bags.
Kim himself played every one of Korea’s group games, but he, as well as most of the players, was not at fault for the downfall. Rather, the many faults of coach Hong Myung-bo and the — allegedly — deep rooted corruption of the Korea Football ***** ociation (KFA) made the disappointing results inevitable. Whether said change takes place, and if so, when it does, remains to be seen. At the time of writing, Hong has just resigned as national coach.
