World number two Elena Rybakina came from a set down to defeat four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka on Tuesday and reach the WTA Toronto Masters semi-finals, where she will face fourth-ranked Coco Gauff.
Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion from Kazakhstan, fired 13 aces in a 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 victory.
"Super happy. It was a very difficult match," Rybakina said after a tight battle lasting 2hr 33min.
"In the first set (I made) a few mistakes, a poor start.
"It was a really tough one but I'm glad I could turn it around, I don't yet know how, but I think my serve helped me a little bit."

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Wallabies lock Miles Amatosero has been banned for three weeks after admitting to dangerous play in Australia's 35-32 win over ****** an in Osaka last weekend.

Kazakhstan's Rybakina recovered from 0-3 and two breaks down in the final set to beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 before American Gauff swept aside another Russian, teenage qualifier Alina Korneeva, 6-3, 6-1 in Toronto.
Rybakina will face a quarter-final against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who eliminated home hero Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4.
Gauff reached the last eight in Canada for the first time since 2023 and will come up against either Swiss 12th seed Belinda Bencic or Alexandra Eala, the rapidly rising 21-year-old Filipina who won her first WTA **** le last Monday in Washington.

The Australian is moving to J. League side Cerezo Osaka, while the two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

World No 1 Sabalenka suffered her earliest grand slam defeat since the 2022 French Open, with Osaka producing a brilliant performance and claiming her first win on Centre Court with a 6-2 7-6 vicotry.
The loss was the first time Sabalenka had exited a grand slam in straight sets since the 2020 US Open, with Osaka also snapping her streak of 21 consecutive tiebreaks won at the grand slams.
Osaka, the former world No 1 and four-time grand slam champion, is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time, ending Sabalenka's bid in what is becoming a wide-open tournament.
For the 10th year in a row, the women's draw will crown a new Wimbledon champion - but it will not be Sabalenka as the US Open crashed out in what is another painful grand slam defeat, following her unravelling against Dian Shnaider at the French Open and Australian Open final defeat to Elena Rybakina this season.

Osaka handled Sabalenka 6-2 in the first set and then outlasted her 7-6 (7-2) to take the victory, her first on the famed Centre Court, which Osaka said in her post-match interview is "so special." The win was her first time beating Sabalenka in eight years, since the 2018 U.S. Open. She had already lost three times this year to the Belarusian star.
"I think it was a really fun match. I'm really grateful," Osaka said as the crowd laughed. "Even if I lost, I would still think it was a great match. But no, it was really fun."
Osaka pointed out her mother, Tamaki Osaka, in her player's box. She thanked her for her ******* anese cooking, which she said "powered" her. Tamaki, wearing a white sunhat, sunglasses and white gloves, blew kisses to her daughter. The tennis star's kimono and cherry blossom-inspired outfits at the tournament have paid tribute to her ******* anese heritage.
The four-time major winner has appeared in six Wimbledon competitions. This year marks her first time making it to the quarterfinals. She will face Karolína Muchová on Tuesday, July 7.
