Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro is warning that a widely speculated 2028 presidential contest between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance could backfire on the secretary.
In a podcast interview with host Patrick Bet-David released on Wednesday, Shapiro cast doubt that Rubio would launch a presidential bid, citing the secretary's history as a "very risk-averse politician."
"If you're Marco and you're … gaming out what the next few years look like for you, here are your choices: Run against JD, you lose, you're done," Shapiro said.
"You run against JD, you win, it's a rough election cycle anyway because the president's riding in the 30s and the country's in the mood for 'something new' and you lose, you're done," Shapiro continued. "You don't run, JD may pick you as his VP candidate, JD loses, you're next. JD does not pick you and JD loses, you're also next."
The conservative commentator said that these considerations suggest "Rubio will not run out of risk aversion" and that he would put his "money on Vance" in this race.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An employee was among three people killed in a shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in southern Idaho, the fast-food chain's owner said.
"My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I've shed. We lost one of our beautiful **** ociates tonight," In-N-Out owner Lynsi Snyder said in a statement released early Sunday on social media. "In-N-Out will be mourning with the families and praying for them as they tread through a very painful season."
The FBI on Sunday encouraged the public to submit images and videos related to the shooting Saturday in Twin Falls that left seven other people wounded, some critically.
The In-N-Out had opened just about a week earlier, on July 24, as part of the California-based company's recent expansion to Idaho.
Snyder did not identify the worker. Officials were still trying to notify relatives of victims and so were not yet releasing the names, ages or other details about the people hurt in the shooting, Twin Falls spokesperson Josh Palmer said Saturday.

A teenager has been charged following a stabbing in Nottingham city centre.
Nottinghamshire Police said a 25-year-old man was attacked in Angel Row at about 15:15 BST on Friday and taken to hospital.
A 14-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged over the incident as well as punching a man in an attempted robbery of an e-bike in Upper Parliament Street earlier the same day, police said.
The boy appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next hearing on 27 July, said the force.
He has been charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife in public in relation to the Angel Row attack, as well as ******* ault, two counts of ******* ault on a police officer, and criminal damage at Queen's Medical Centre following his arrest.
