Shavkat Rakhmonov hasn't competed since defeating Ian Machado Garry, essentially on one leg, after dealing with knee injuries for nearly two years.
Rakhmonov was slated to fight then-champ Belal Muhammad at UFC 310 in December 2024, but Muhammd withdrew due to injury. Rakhmonov, despite having a miniscus and ACL injury, remained on the card and faced Machado Garry in a No. 1 contender fight, winning a competitive decision.
In a rare interview, Rakhmonov discusses his injuries, and decision making, while also taking a shot at Khabib Nurmagomedov and current welterweight champ Islam Makhachev.
"Well that's my problem, I couldn't fight," Rakhmonov told Alf Global. "If I had fought, I could've become champion, but that's how it turned out. I was injured. What can I do? We are only human. We are bound to make plenty of mistakes. …
"I actually shouldn't even have fought Ian Garry at all. With injuries like that, I shouldn't have fought at all, I just took a risk. That's the Kazakh way. Kazakhs are very daring. They're not afraid. If it had been some other Dagestani fighter like Khabib or Islam Makhachev, they definitely would've refused."

Carlos Prates has admitted he expects to get "smashed" by Islam Makhachev for periods of their fight, should they clash over the UFC welterweight ******* le – but he believes he will ultimately knock out the Russian.
Prates is seen as the likeliest contender to face Makhachev next, given he is 7-1 in the UFC with seven knockout wins, including stoppages of former champions Jack Della Maddalena and Leon Edwards.
Makhachev last fought in August, outpointing Ian Machado Garry, the only man to beat Prates in the UFC. With that win, the 34-year-old Russian confirmed his status as the UFC's pound-for-pound No 1 fighter.
UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev (Reuters)
Still, Prates is confident that Makhachev would suffer the same fate as so many others, if he fought the Brazilian, 33.

PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov hasn't entered the UFC yet, but he's already talking trash about the quality of opposition he may face when he gets there.
Nurmagomedov fought the last fight on his PFL contract last month, and recently revealed he turned down a $2 million per fight offer from the organization in order to wait out the 90 day exclusive negotiation period and see what other promotions might offer him. Promotions like the UFC, where he could finally get his due as one of the best lightweights in the world.
In an interview with Sport24, Usman pushed back on the idea that the top fighters are all in the UFC.
"They say if you don't fight in the UFC, it's not the same level. I disagree with this," he said. "Just look at the guys in the UFC who sit in the top 10 and they just fight amongst themselves and keep the top ten closed. For example, Benoit Saint Denis. Won 4, lost to Dustin Poirier, lost to 'Money' Moicano, lost 3 more. Lost in 30 seconds. [Michael] Chandler. Top 15. He's there. Lost to [Paddy] Pimblett."
"[Ilia] Topuria, who praised himself endlessly, lost. Quit on the stool. Said 'I don't wanna continue.' Arman [Tsarukyan] lost to [Mateusz] Gamrot, and he lost to Islam [Makhachev]. He sits, waits a year, fights once, and says that he is the best wrestler in the world. While he had two fights, I made four ****** le defenses."

Umar Nurmagomedov thinks his brother, Usman Nurmagomedov, can compete with the UFC's best.
Usman (22-0), who became a free agent after knocking out Archie Colgan at PFL New York last month, could be UFC bound if he opts not to re-sign with PFL. His older brother Umar raved about his work ethic, and thinks he's ready for the elite of the UFC's lightweight division – including champion Justin Gaethje.
"He's an amazing fighter, and I'm a huge fan of his," Nurmagomedov told MMA Junkie of Usman. "I like how he spars, how he works, how he does everything as a professional. And even in the cage, he shows he's a high-level fighter. I think he can be competitive with anybody in the world.
"Sometimes people think in other promotions, (they're) bad fighters, but it's not like that. For example, Shabliy is one of the toughest guys, Alexandr Shabliy. Even Arman (Tsarukyan) knows that because he sparred with him a lot. He knows how he's tough, and I think Usman can compete with anybody in the world. Gaethje, Ilia (Topuria), Arman, (Mauricio) Ruffy, anybody."
Their teammate, UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, has openly said he wants to see Usman in the UFC. Nurmagomedov on the other hand, wasn't as direct with his opinion.

Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev appeared rather irked by Merab Dvalishvili's reaction to his UFC 330 win.
While watching Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) retain his ***** le against Ian Machado Garry less than two weeks ago, Dvalishvili took umbrage with the promotion allowing him to carry his Russian flag.
"I thought they're not allowed a flag in there? They don't let me use the flag," Dvalishvili told Nina Drama. "This flag is banned everywhere in the world, and only of course they show here in the UFC. It's crazy."
Dvalishvili (21-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC) will look to reclaim his bantamweight ***** le from Petr Yan (20-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC) when the pair battle in a trilogy bout, which co-headlines UFC 333 on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi. Yan put an end to Dvalishvili's ***** le reign by defeating him at UFC 323.
"Yes, I did see his reaction," Makhachev said of Dvalishvili (h/t Red Corner MMA). "I saw the video of him watching my fight, and he didn't seem happy to see me succeed in the octagon, but I don't pay attention to things like that. He had already said some things about it a lot of times, but Petr Yan beat him and raised the flag afterwards. And I think he'll beat him again and make him silent."

With his win over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 331, Islam Makhachev broke Anderson Silva's record for longest win streak. Anyone hoping to claim it will have to beat his 18 UFC victories in a row, and Makhachev plans on adding to that number before hanging up his gloves.
When that may happen is unclear, as Makhachev said he has no intention of retiring any time soon … although he does seem to be questioning what great accomplishment comes next after the win streak record.
"No record is unbreakable," he told Russian outlet Ushatayka. "There are fighters out there who are getting closer. There are already fighters breathing down my neck with ten wins."
Islam Makhachev says he believes he has at least three more “very hard and exciting fights” left in his career, while admitting he isn’t sure which records he can still chase after breaking one that once seemed unbreakable.
“Well, no record is unbreakable. There are fighters out… pic.twitter.com/LUHlfUcnPv
"I don't really know [what will be the next] record for myself," Makhachev added. "Maybe for ****** le fights? But it's a hard one to beat. I fought ten bouts before the ****** le while the one who holds the record [Jon Jones] had the ****** le in his third or fourth fight. So I don't know what records will come next."

Michael Chiesa remains bullish on Ian Machado Garry's upside despite falling short in his first bid at gold.
Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) suffered a unanimous decision loss to Islam Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) in their UFC 330 welterweight ******* le fight this month, but the Irishman was more competitive than many pundits and the oddsmakers indicated.
Although Machado Garry did not get the belt at UFC 330, retired welterweight standout turned UFC ******* yst and commentator Chiesa still saw flashes of brilliance. If Machado Garry can build on those going forward, it could lead him to the ultimate prize.
"Ian Garry's stock to me still goes up," Chiesa told MMA Junkie. "I don't think his stock goes down at all. There are people that definitely had him picked to win, and he didn't fight a bad fight. But he could have fought better. But his stock still goes up. He was able to defend takedowns. He made it really hard for Islam. He made Islam have to ditch MMA and focus on wrestling to get through the late rounds of that fight.
"Ian's stock still goes up. I can confidently say there is a world where he has a world ******* le someday. Especially given how young he is. 28 years old. He's got a lot of time to win a ******* le."

Could UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski retire after his next fight? It depends.
Volkanovski is set to defend his ******* le against Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333 (Paramount+) on Oct. 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. With roughly two months until the fight, Volkanovski, who turns 38 on Sept. 29, is open about the fact that retirement is a possibility.
"If things go terribly wrong, all right, we're done," Volkanovski said in an interview with Australia's 10 News. "If things go very well like the last one, no damage, go through, all right, we'll keep it rolling."
Volkanovski (28-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) is in his second reign as 145-pound champion. During his first ******* le run, he defended the belt five time before Ilia Topuria knocked him out with a punch in February 2024, his second consecutive defeat by knockout after Islam Makhachev finished him with a head kick and punches four months earlier in a lightweight ******* le fight.
Many observers wondered then if Volkanovski was nearing the end of his career, but after Topuria vacated the featherweight ******* le, Volkanovski regained it by defeating Diego Lopes at UFC 314 and then successfully defended against Lopes in their rematch at UFC 325 this past February. Volkanovski will seek his second ******* le defends when he meets undefeated Evloev, who is 20-0 overally and 10-0 in the UFC.

UFC 330 brought the violence – and the ***** ps and bruises.
On Thursday, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission (PSAC) released a full list of medical suspensions issued to the combatants from Saturday's event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
The highest-profile name to receive a suspension was Islam Makhachev, who the commission diagnosed with a rib contusion, resulting in a 30-day term handed out. Ian Machado Garry, whom he beat by unanimous decision in the main event, did not receive a medical suspension. Neither did co-main event participants Mackenzie Dern and Gillian Robertson.
Three fighters from the undercard are facing indefinite suspensions. Unsurprisingly, Tresean Gore, who lost at least one tooth as the result of a Vicente Luque flying knee, is among that bunch. Eduardo Chapolin and Ramiz Brahimaj are also now on indefinite suspensions as a result of their finish losses.
Check out a full list of PSAC medical suspensions below. It's important to note that in most cases, fighters can return sooner than the duration ***** igned to them, as long as they are cleared by a proper medical professional.

Carlos Prates had a front-row seat to the action at UFC 330 in Philadelphia this past Saturday. With his sights firmly set on the victor, Prates watched intently as UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev defended his **** le against Ian Machado Garry.
In the end, it was Makhachev who walked away with a hard-fought unanimous decision to secure his first defense of the 170-pound **** le. The competitive affair left Brazil's Prates optimistic and excited to challenge the reigning pound-for-pound superstar Makhachev.
Speaking Tuesday's on "The Ariel Helwani Show," Prates revealed that he had a conversation with UFC CBO Hunter Campbell while in Philadelphia — and according to the top-ranked knockout artist, Prates is indeed next in line.
"I'm the next for the **** le. New contract. The next one for the **** le, let's go," Prates told Uncrowned.
"Eight fights [on the new contract]. ... I think [Michael Morales] is going to fight Belal Muhammad or somebody, another fighter. Maybe, I don't know, but another fight."

Belal Muhammad agrees with Dana White that Ian Machado Garry lacked killer instinct at UFC 330.
Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) was criticized by the UFC boss for being too friendly in his ***** le loss to welterweight champion Islam Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) in Saturday's main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. With one judge having the fight tied at two rounds a piece heading into Round 5, Muhammad expected Machado Garry to go for it more.
"What's with this hugging? You're down in the fifth round. You've got to have the killer instinct," Muhammad said on his YouTube channel. "You've got to for it. His face wasn't beat up. It was an Adesanya vs. Gastelum war where you're like, 'Let's do it.' You were losing. Mindset-wise, he needs to flip the switch. His mindset was we didn't get tapped, we got up from a couple of takedowns, those are wins for him, and he has to change that. Stock-wise, he's going to learn from it. He's going to get better from it, but this game is unforgiving.
"You go against Morales next. You get one-punched and get knocked out. That head kick that Islam landed on you in the second round, if it knocked you out, it changes everything else. You can't waste an opportunity. You can't waste a moment, and I felt like he definitely wasted moments there. The one sequence that I was like Islam has this fight – obviously when it came to the fifth round, and he took the back, I was like, 'Oh, it's over.' When he had the body triangle in, I knew he wasn't going to get out of that situation. For Islam, that was his checkmate moment."
Machado Garry earned his ***** le shot by defeating former welterweight champion Muhammad by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 265.

The one sequence that I was like Islam has this fight – obviously when it came to the fifth round, and he took the back, I was like, 'Oh, it's over.' Who will Islam Makhachev fight next following his UFC 330 win over Ian Machado Garry? The UFC made it clear that there are two potential contenders. The crowd cam repeatedly switched back and forth between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales, with the commentary team bigging both men up as deserving of a ***** le shot.
At the UFC 330 post-fight press conference, Islam Makhachev asked an obvious question: "Why they not fight on this card to see who is the number one contender?"
Why not, indeed. Possibly because the UFC loves having two contenders around so they can offer the fight to the less picky, less demanding choice. Since that's a prisoner's dilemma that leaves both men racing to the bottom, it looks like Michael Morales would rather fight to figure out who the true No. 1 contender is.
"If the guy have two arms, two legs, one ***** like me, bro, I can fight him," Prates declared regarding Morales' challenge. "He said I'm scared about him? I'm not scared to fight you, I'm the No. 1 contender so I want to fight for the belt. UFC never offered a fight against you. If they offer me, of course I will knock you out really fast. First round."
"So don't worry. You gonna fight and I'm gonna knock you out. But now, wait. Get my belt, and then we can fight."

Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Let's start the night off by taking a look back over the three biggest stories of Monday, Aug. 17, 2026.
Dana White heaps praise on incoming Contender Series prospect Bella Mir: 'A one-of-one unicorn': Bella Mir has all the credentials of a future great, but you can't count your chickens before they hatch in combat sports.
'Stressed' Din Thomas flamed for quitting (literally) on Gillian Robertson after uninspired UFC 330 loss: 'Stand behind your fighter': I'm glad Din already apologized for his UFC 330 outburst, because it was ugly work.
Former UFC **** le challenger questions Islam Makhachev's Welterweight future: 'His game has to change': It's always difficult for grinding wrestlers to go up in weight. Strength and size are major components to holding somebody down even if there's technique involved too.

Hello everyone, and welcome back for another week of rankings in the UFC. That was a wild fight card we had for UFC 330, in which we saw both champions defend their belts successfully. We also saw a ton of upsets in this card that turned the entire betting world upside down.
However, now that UFC 330 is in the past, we look forward to UFC Fight Night 285 in Sacramento. This fight night will feature Anthony "Fluffy" Hernandez versus Gregory Rodrigues for the main event.
That being said, let's get to this week's rankings and see who made it. Have a great day, everyone, and may the fights be with you.

Joshua Van remains at tenth even after his amazing win against Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328. Since then, it's been quiet, but now the wait is finally over. Van will be facing Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331 on September 19th, in Los Angeles, CA. After seeing them face to face at UFC 330's media day, I can't wait for these two to finally square off in a fair fight with no injuries.

Ian Machado Garry came up short in the UFC 330 main event ***** le bout against welterweight champion Islam Makhachev on Sunday. "The Future" lost by unanimous decision inside Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Following the loss, the Irishman released a video statement via social media.
"Tonight wasn't my night," Garry said on Instagram. "I feel great, I did great, Islam was just better than me tonight and that's OK. I want everybody who loves me and supports me and wants to see me do better, I want you to know that I'm going to be back.
"I'm not disheartened by this. I'm bulletproof in my mind. I'm going to be back. I'm 28 years of age, I just fought arguably the greatest fighter we've ever seen in this sport and I pushed him to the f**king wire and I'm so proud of myself and I'm so proud of my team and everything that we've done. I'm so proud of what I've done in this world and who I've become. ***** ody's stopping me. Tonight was not my night."
Garry vowed to return 'better than ever,' and heaped praise on Makhachev and his team.
"Islam, your team, congratulations. Your guys did amazing," said Garry. "I have nothing but love and respect for everything you guys have done in this sport, I said that to you. I'll be back. There's plenty of matchups in this sport, plenty of fun matchups that I'm excited for. We'll be back and we'll be better than ever. I love you all, let's go, baby."

For the first time in seven years the UFC octagon was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Xfinity Mobile Arena hosted UFC 330: Makhachev vs. Machado Garry and the fight promotion's return to "The City of Brotherly Love" was triumphant.
The 12-bout fight card was headlined by two world ****** le fights. The main event featured a welterweight ****** le bout between champion Islam Makhahev and No. 2 ranked contender Ian Machado Garry. In the co-main event. women's strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern put her belt on the line against No. 4 ranked Gillian Robertson.
The night of fights played out in front of 19,238 spectators in attendance generating $6,715,776 in gate receipts breaking records.
"We shattered the arena record by two million dollars," UFC CEO Dana White said during the event's post-fight press conference.
"We're in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a Russian Muslim and an Irish kid, and we do a $7 million gate and we shatter the f**king record here. The biggest event that's ever been held here, we beat it by $2 million. It's crazy. Unheard of before," said White. "If you fought in Philly, you'd have to have a guy from Philly in the main event. It's pretty impressive."

Ian Machado Garry proclaimed that it was his "destiny" to defeat Islam Makhachev at UFC 330 and become the new welterweight champion. Reality, however, proved otherwise.
Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) gave a solid account of himself in a unanimous decision loss to Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) on Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Victory was not out of his reach, he just didn't have the start he needed or produce enough effective offense to capitalize on what felt like a winnable scenario for him.
It will be a tough pill for Machado Garry to swallow once he watches the fight back and sees that he could've made this result even closer than it was, but there should also be a high degree of confidence he will take it the right way and grow. His comments in the immediate aftermath of the fight showed he didn't lose an ounce of confidence in himself, and that should carry him to a better place going forward.
Machado Garry is entirely accurate when he notes he's only 28, and could easily have another decade of high-level competition ahead of him. There is a solid chance he finds himself back in a ***** le fight one day, it's just a question of how long that will take.
It's no guarantee, though, because the welterweight division is as good as it gets, and it's entirely possible he can't get past the next killer that will undoubtedly be standing across the octagon from him next time out, and be set back even further. He's in the range of the weight class now where zero easy fights are coming his way.

PHILADELPHIA – Ian Machado Garry's respectful and friendly attitude at UFC 330 didn't sit well with UFC CEO Dana White.
This past Saturday, in the main event of UFC 330, Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) fell short of dethroning UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The Irishman lost a unanimous decision to Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) in a competitive bout that saw Machado Garry come up late in the fight.
White thinks the fight could've gone much differently if Machado Garry dropped his friendly and respectful gestures, as he was hugging and shaking hands with the champion throughout the ***** le bout.
"I think that this is my honest opinion on it; I felt like tonight was set up for the upset," White said at the UFC 330 post-fight interview. "I felt like the upset could happen tonight with so much on the line, all the records that Islam has, and he's going to break Anderson Silva's record. There's weight classes for a reason. Ian Gary is a big, rangy, strong guy who has great takedown defense. I mean, if you look at his takedown defense tonight against Islam, it was impressive. I felt like, I think that Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct in that fifth round, he had been beating him to the body. Islam's whole, I think, right side was beat up. His face was beat up. You don't come out and hug and shake hands. That sh*t drives me ***** crazy when there's so much at stake.
"There's also a lot of mental gamesmanship, whatever you want to call it, in this game. You come out in that fifth round with a flying knee or something crazy, and you try to finish the fight. I think that this is one of those fights that Ian will go back and watch and say, 'F*ck, I wish I could do that over again.'"

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the most chaotic of all the combat sports.
Because there are so many potential avenues to victory, there are an equal number of ways to suddenly lose everything. Each weekend, at least one fighter with all the advantages on paper will instead taste defeat in violent fashion. Denying that disorder is what makes an extensive win streak or dominant ***** le reign so impressive. Controlling chaos is the name of the game, and it's why we expect our greatest of all time (GOAT) candidates to be untouchable.
Think about prime Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, or Georges St. Pierre: they didn't have close fights very often. Each of them spent about a decade thoroughly dominating their field, rarely looking hurt or tired as they outclassed the opposition. There are notable exceptions for each man, but that's why they were notable! Their true battles against the respective likes of Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Johnny Hendricks were all shocking at the time, rare moments where this pantheon of greats looked like mortal humans.
Islam Makhachev, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished UFC fighters of all time. Last night at UFC 330, he broke Silva's record for longest win streak, and he did so in the first ***** le defense of his second divisional championship. Even more impressively, he did so against a larger opponent with top-notch skills and great tactics.
He has the resume of an all-time great, which makes it exceptionally interesting that Makhachev is on the verge of losing surprisingly often.

Because there are so many potential avenues to victory, there are an equal number of ways to suddenly lose everything. Each weekend, at least one fighter with all the advantages on paper will instead taste defeat in violent fashion. After a night that included an eye poke, an illegal knee and the general mayhem of a UFC event, Dana White was irritated.
The source of his frustration: In the UFC 330 main event, as the fifth and final round ensued, Ian Machado Garry high-fived reigning welterweight champion Islam Makhachev.
"I think that Ian is a talented guy," White, the UFC's CEO, said at the post-fight press conference. "I think if he had even an ounce of killer instinct, in that fifth round, you know he'd been beating (Makhachev) to the body.
"Islam's whole right side was beat up, his face was beat up. You don't come out and hug and shake hands. That (expletive) drives me (expletive) crazy."

Back in the day, fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus in Philadelphia during a halftime show of an Eagles game at old Franklin Field. Thirty years later, when games were held in the concrete fortress known as Veterans Stadium, a makeshift courtroom and jail were built in the bowels of the stadium because a quick justice system was needed to deal with rowdies.
It's well-documented that it can be a harsh crowd in the City of Brotherly Love.
But you know who Philadelphia loved on Saturday night? Islam Makhachev. Dagestan may be over 5,000 miles from Philly, but the city embraced the UFC's welterweight champion in his first ***** le defense against Ian Machado Garry, in large part because of Ian Machado Garry. The fans didn't like him. Not as a challenger. Not as a person. Not as a potential spoiler. At one point during UFC 330's main event, a chant broke out that couldn't help but tip their hand.
"F*** Ian Garry!" the chant went. Thousands joined in.
It wasn't what you might call the friendly confines for the Irishman, who showed up with the daunting task of trying to overthrow the UFC's best pound-for-pound fighter. Vegas oddsmakers installed Garry as a sizable underdog, which in other towns might've been enough to sway some sentiment.
