Sonay Kartal's dreams of becoming a WTA 1000 champion were ended on Sunday evening following defeat in the Wuhan Open final.
Despite being ranked 170th on the Tour, Kartal marched into the Chinese WTA 1000 final, defeating Belinda Bencic, Elina Svitolina, Jasmine Paolini and Jelena Ostapenko en route.
Maja Chwalinska, from Poland, defeated Kartal in the final, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Following Sunday's contest, Kartal posted a short message on social media.
"Leaving China with my head held high," Kartal, who has risen 121 places in the WTA rankings to world number 49, said in an Instagram post on Sunday.

Welcome back to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories from the past week on court.
This week, a debut **** le that will help a player for the next year, possible changes on the ATP Tour and the indoor version of Carlos Alcaraz.
If you'd like to follow our fantastic tennis coverage, click here.
The structure of tennis means that fairy-tale runs and surprise **** le wins can come back to loom over a player down the line. For Poland's Maja Chwalińska, who reached the French Open final as a qualifier earlier this year, the latter now means that the former is off her back.
Chwalińska's 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Britain's Sonay Kartal on Sunday at the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open in China was not just her first tour **** le. It was not just a remarkable feat for a 25-year-old who had played just 10 tour-level main-draw matches before 2026. It was also insurance for her future self.

Maja Chwalinska and Sonay Kartal have both been rewarded for their runs to the Wuhan Open final.
Chwalinska beat Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to win her first ever WTA **** le at the Wuhan Open, which is a 1000 level tournament.
This is another huge result in a breakout season for Chwalinska, who reached the Roland Garros final after coming through qualifying earlier this year.
While Kartal was unable to capture the **** le in Wuhan, both she and Chwalinska have now both made major moves in the latest update of the WTA rankings.
Chwalinska was the world number 22 coming into the Wuhan Open, having begun the season as the world number 146, and after beating the likes of Iga Swiatek, Iva Jovic and then Kartal in the final has taken it even further.

Qinwen Zheng has battled unimaginable fitness concerns over the past few years, which threatened to completely derail such a promising start to her career.
Having emerged onto the scene as inarguably one of the most talented Chinese players of all time, she soon started achieving feats to back up such promise.
Deep runs in WTA 1000 and Grand Slam tournaments felt relatively regular, and culminated in her reaching the final of the Australian Open in 2024, and the Wuhan Open later that year.
Whilst she lost both matches, Qinwen Zheng was getting closer to snagging an elite honour before disaster struck.
The end of her 2025 campaign was completely marred by injury, and whilst she tried to play after elbow surgery, she had to shut it down. This past turmoil is what makes any new fitness concerns particularly worrying for the 24-year-old.

Six months ago, Sonay Kartal could not stand up and brush her teeth without "being in agony".
The pain caused by a stress fracture in her back eventually subsided, but the 24-year-old Briton still had a long road to full recovery, which needed to be navigated with patience and hard work.
Kartal did not make her return to competitive action until little under a month ago.
But on Monday, she became the new British number one after an extraordinary week at the Wuhan Open, where she reached the biggest final of her career in just her third tournament back.
"In the first month or so, I was at home in bed - sometimes I had good days but there were also bad days where I wasn't really able to walk without some form of pain," Kartal said.

Ronnie O'Sullivan says he does not "want to throw in the towel just yet" after being well beaten in his 6-3 defeat by Chang Bingyu in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open on Friday.
The seven-time world champion fought back against China Open winner Mark Selby in the quarter-finals on Thursday to seal a 5-3 victory, but he has spoken candidly at this week's ranking event about his struggles.
O'Sullivan has taken steps to prioritise his mental health in recent years, withdrawing from tournaments and discussing his battles with depression and anxiety.
"The disease came back big time today," said the 50-year-old Englishman. "If I'm honest I don't think I will ever get over it."

Yangtze Memory Technologies filed for an initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to raise $4.9 billion, in what would rank among China's largest semiconductor share sales in years, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The company, known as YMTC and based in Wuhan, China, said in its listing prospectus on Friday that it plans to issue between roughly 2.0 billion and 2.4 billion new shares, representing 10% to 12% of its post-offering share capital, with an overallotment option of up to 15%. The funds will be used to upgrade production lines and develop next-generation storage products. The company expects to list in 2027, according to the Wall Street Journal.
YMTC's parent company, CCSH Corporation, plans to list on Shanghai's STAR Market, according to the Nikkei Asia. The IPO comes as explosive demand from artificial intelligence has driven a surge in NAND flash chip prices, allowing YMTC's factories to run near full capacity.
The company's first-quarter results underscore that momentum. The company posted first-quarter revenue of 47.04 billion yuan, or $7.0 billion, a figure that surpassed what it had earned across all of 2024. Revenue from core NAND flash products rose nearly fivefold compared with the same period a year earlier, while quarterly net profit reached 33.38 billion yuan — more than twice what the company earned across all of 2025. The company said gross margin expanded to 77% in the quarter, up from 35% a year prior.
Counterpoint Research placed YMTC third in global NAND shipments, putting it ahead of Kioxia by volume, even as it continues to lag behind both Kioxia and Micron Technology when measured by revenue.

Naomi Osaka has set up a highly anticipated showdown with Leylah Fernandez in the fourth round of the 2026 Canadian Open. Ahead of the blockbuster clash in Toronto, Osaka shared her thoughts on Fernandez, their rivalry, and how their recent practice session could impact their upcoming meeting.
After making a dominant start to her campaign with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Panna Udvardy, No. 11 seed Osaka produced another clinical display during her clash with No. 20 seed Elise Mertens in the third round of the WTA 1000 event. She needed just one hour and 11 minutes to seal a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Mertens.
The former world No. 1's encounter with No. 30 seed Leylah Fernandez in the fourth round will mark their third tour-level encounter. The Canadian secured a 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Osaka in their first meeting at the 2021 US Open, while the four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Fernandez 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at the Wuhan Open last year.
During her post-match press conference, Osaka reflected on her rivalry with Fernandez, expressing surprise that they have only faced each other twice.
"I mean, honestly, I'm shocked we've only played twice. I feel like we could have played more, but I think we've just practiced a couple of times. Actually, I practiced with her in DC like a week ago," Osaka said.

Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were preparing to question a British zoologist and disease ecology expert upon his return to the United States from the World Health Organization's investigation into the origins of COVID-19, before the FBI intervened and asked agents to stand down, according to files released Monday by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
"They told the public a COVID lab leak 'wasn't plausible,'" Rand wrote on X. "Their own private messages say otherwise. Today I'm launching The Reading Room where the public can review records related to my ongoing investigation – not just conclusions but the actual documents."
The documents show CBP's National Targeting Center flagged Peter Daszak as "a high person of interest" ahead of his Feb. 5, 2021, arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Daszak, the former president of EcoHealth Alliance, was flagged because of more than 15 years of collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and his longstanding relationship with its lead researcher, Zhengli Shi, as well as his role as principal investigator on National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants funding bat coronavirus research in China.
