Although North DeSoto graduated a quarterback to Northwestern (Luke Delafield) and a running back to Louisiana Tech (Kenny Thomas), not many are crying for the 2026 Griffins, who remain loaded with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.
That's why coach Dennis Dunn's squad has been chosen to win the 2026 District 1-4A ******* le in a close race with Northwood, which has seven senior offensive linemen. Five of those linemen have more than 100 starts between them. Replacing Delafield will be freshman Mason Smith, who already holds offers from LSU and Tulane, and he'll have a big target in tight end Miller Warren, a Northwestern State commitment.
DISTRICT 1-3A: Sterlington, Loyola expected to lead way in 2026 District 1-3A race
DISTRICT 1-2A: Calvary Baptist expected to rule District 1-2A in 2026
DISTRICT 4-2A: Mansfield could lead District 4-2A in close race with Many, Red River

For a few weeks now, we have heard about Pat Fitzgerald's plans to bring in a new tradition to Michigan State football that he's done throughout his career. He's calling it 'The Spartan'. The team voted on the player that best exemplifies what it means to be a Spartan, and that player will earn the right to wear No. 1 as his jersey number this season. On Thursday evening, we found out that the team selected Kenny Soars Jr. to be the inaugural Spartan.
The selection of Soares as The Spartan tells us a few things. One, this clearly had nothing to do with who has been in the program the longest. Soares is a graduate transfer who will only play one season for Michigan State after starting his career with Northwestern, where he was recruited by Fitzgerald before Fitzgerald was fired. Soares then transferred to NC State, where he played one season for the Wolfpack. It also tells us that Soares is already incredibly respected by his teammates and coaches.
Soares will go down in history as the first player to start this new legacy at MSU.

With one month remaining until the start of Northwestern's football season, head coach David Braun and his team are officially in fall camp and making final preparations for September.
The Big Ten Media Days in downtown Chicago have officially concluded after all 18 coaches and their players shared their thoughts on the upcoming season. Along with Coach Braun, Griffin Wilde, Caleb Komolafe and Robert Fitzgerald made an appearance to discuss their thoughts on the upcoming season.
After hearing from some of the biggest names on the roster, here are the biggest takeaways from the afternoon:
While easier said than done, Coach Braun laid out his vision for the future of Northwestern football. While he thanked the previous coaches of the 'Cats, he made it very clear that he wants to change the course of Northwestern football. He no longer wants the status quo of a mid-tier football team that makes a bowl game; he wants it all.
"What's been achieved over the last three decades under Coach Barnett, Coach Walker and Coach Fitz is something we will always talk about as a program," Braun said in his opening statement. "I have a level of appreciation of what has been accomplished. But there is also an acknowledgement and an 'and' proposition that we have expectations to do it better than we've ever done it before."

CHICAGO – Alessio Milivojevic confidently strode across the stage and sat down on the dais, snappily dressed in a dark-colored pinstripe suit that blended into the black table cloth and microphone in front of him.
Any nervousness that he showed last fall as a redshirt freshman who was thrust into the Michigan State football quarterback job also faded with every answer to every question at Big Ten media day. He knows now he is the starter and face of the program going into Pat Fitzgerald's first season, and Milivojevic's comfort at the podium came from advice he got recently from his new coach.
"I think it's just being yourself at the end of the day," Milivojevic said last week. "I'm just coming up here talking as if I was talking to one of my best friends right now."
As the Spartans prepare to open preseason camp on Thursday, Aug. 6, Milivojevic and his 104 teammates will spend the next month building their bonds inside the walls of Case Hall. That's where they will be living when they are not across Chestnut Road at the football complex working toward Fitzgerald's debut game against Toledo on Friday night, Sept. 4, across Shaw Lane at Spartan Stadium.
Fitzgerald, a former All-American and College Football Hall of Fame linebacker who spent 17 seasons as head coach at his alma mater Northwestern, flashed back to his days in high school and college. He brought back the tradition of putting the Spartans in the dorms for camp because of the friendships and connections he cultivated as a player and watched as a coach before being dubiously dispatched by Northwestern before the 2023 season.

April Chapple, a former Tennessee volleyball player and a member of the Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame, has died. She was 62.
Chapple, an Inglewood, California, native, starred for Tennessee from 1981-84, helping the program win three SEC regular-season championships and three SEC Tournament ******* les.
The Lady Vols reached the NCAA Tournament in all four of Chapple's seasons, and in 1982, Tennessee earned its first NCAA Tournament win in program history, beating Northwestern in five sets.
In 1984, she was named SEC Player of the Year and SEC Tournament MVP, on her way to becoming UT's second All-American in volleyball.
Among the program's all-time leaders, she ranks second in career aces (244) and third in career kills (1,650). Her top season for aces came in 1983, when she tallied 95, ranking second in the non-rally scoring era. In 1984, she recorded her best season in kills with 483, a total that ranks ninth in program history during that same era.

Welcome back to the NUFH Notebook! This week, we're taking a deeper dive into the newest additions to Tracey Fuchs' squad. 2026 will prove to be a pivotal year for the 'Cats, with massive turnover on the horizon. In order to keep the "win now" window open, they'll need to develop talent from the bottom up.
These are the seven names to keep an eye on.
Freedman is one piece that will seek to fill the massive void that two-time Honda Sport Award winner Maddie Zimmer leaves after her departure. She brings years of U18 and U21 national team experience to Northwestern.
Freedman also represented the state of Western Australia during her high school years, one of her best performances came at the 2023 Australia U18 Championships, where she scored a brace in pool play after recording a hat trick in the U21 bronze medal game just two months earlier.
Freedman finds herself part of a deep midfield group in preparation for the fall and is one of five newcomers looking to break in alongside returning starters Laura Salamanca and Emilie Kirschner. However, her advantage is her strong resume at one of the highest levels of field hockey on the planet.

Not all big seasons come from the teams ranked high in the preseason rankings. The mid-level of the CFN preseason college football rankings represents something more important overall.
Power.
Oh sure, everyone circles the games against Ohio State, and Alabama, and Notre Dame, Michigan, and Georgia. But what makes a power conference so strong? It's that nasty midsection of games that make the body blows add up.
Great, you got by Clemson. Now beat SMU, and then Florida State, and then a Wake Forest team that few will pay attention to, but has the stuff to win nine games like last year's version did.
These teams might be just outside of our preseason top 25, but you'd better take them all seriously.
CFN's 2026 Preseason Rankings
The Elite of the Elite: Top 10 | 11 to 25
Predicted Record: 6-6
2025 Final Record: 7-6
2025 CFN Preview Rank: 67
2025 CFN Final Rank: 31
Week 1: South Dakota State
Swing Game: Penn State, Oct. 2
With a shiny new stadium, a whale of a coaching staff - including offensive coordinator Chip Kelly - and real talent, there's a lot to like. The schedule, though, will crush the excitement.
Northwestern 2026 Team Preview
Predicted Record: 6-6
2025 Final Record: 9-4
2025 CFN Preview Rank: 65
2025 CFN Final Rank: 36
Week 1:Akron
Swing Game: at NC State, Oct. 10
The five tough ACC road games, along with a home game against Miami, will make it hard, but the veterans are there to put together another sneaky-great run.
Wake Forest 2026 Team Preview
Predicted Record: 6-6
2025 Final Record: 7-6
2025 CFN Preview Rank: 32
2025 CFN Final Rank: 43
Week 1: Ohio
Swing Game: Washington, Oct. 31
The Huskers will play hard and give everyone fits, but they don't have the playmakers to get past Indiana, Oregon, and Ohio State - they're all on the slate. The struggle continues.
Nebraska 2026 Team Preview

The Arizona Cardinals had a few roster transactions that went unannounced on Monday. They added a pair of players and cut two to make room for them.
According to the NFL transaction report, the Cardinals were awarded two players via waiver claims — defensive tackle Cam Horsley and running back Evan Hull.
Horsely spent last season with the Tennessee ******* ans as a rookie. He signed with the ******* ans after going undrafted last year out of Boston College. He was signed to the active roster in December and played in one game, logging 14 defensive snaps without a statistic.
He is 6-3 and 312 pounds. He was waived by the ******* ans on Sunday.
Hull is a 5-10, 209-lb running back entering his fourth NFL season. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2023 by the Indianapolis Colts out of Northwestern. He appeared in one game each in 2023 and 2024, rushing once for one yards and catching one pass for six.

One of the more intriguing commitments in the Class of 2027 comes from a member of college football royalty. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day recently made some interesting recruiting visits—but they weren't for the Buckeyes.
Instead, Day was supporting his son, R.J. Day, a quarterback who recently committed to Northwestern, keeping his college career in the Big Ten. That decision could eventually set up a father-son showdown, and Ryan Day already knows his son may have a slight edge when it comes to reading defenses.
MORE: 10 biggest College Football storylines heading into the 2026 season
Don't expect Day to take it easy on his son, though, even if it means dealing with an unhappy wife after the game. The two could face each other as early as the 2027 season.
Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day leads his team onto the field prior to the NCAA football game against the Texas Longhorns at Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30, 2025.

If you have strong quarterback play, chances are you're going to do well in a given NFL season. Some will now argue you don't need elite quarterback play after the last two Super Bowls were won by Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles) and Sam Darnold (Seattle Seahawks). However, competent quarterback play is still much-needed.
The Lions certainly have top-notch quarterback play in Jared Goff. However, what if the Lions get bad injury luck and he goes down? Do the Lions still have a chance with Teddy Bridgewater or Luke Altmyer?
CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan took a look as he ranked NFL contenders by their backup quarterback situations.
Sullivan ranked the 16 teams with odds of +2500 or shorter at DraftKings to win Super Bowl LXI. Of those 16 teams, the Lions ranked 15th on this list.
Not that long ago, Teddy Bridgewater was coaching high school football. After resigning from his post at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in August of last year, he signed on to be a backup for the Buccaneers and did see some action in Week 12 last season against the Rams. There, Bridgewater completed 53.3% of his throws for just 62 yards. The last time he started a game came back in Week 17 of the 2022 season as a member of the Dolphins.

Five of Northwestern's seven wins last season came at home, and head coach David Braun thinks that the team might have an even greater advantage at home with the new Ryan Field.
Braun likened his home stadium to a historic venue during Big Ten Media Days on Thursday.
"I think the two things that really stand out when you step into the New Ryan Field, if you're ever fortunate to stand at field level, I mean, you truly feel like you're in a new-age Roman Coliseum. You feel the intimacy. You feel the fans on top of you, the canopy, the acoustics are going to act more like a dome than an outdoor stadium," Braun stated.
Braun continued by talking about the construct of the seats further away from the field.
"Then the reverse engineering of that is try to find a bad seat. Go to the so-called upper deck and go to the back row. I've sat in those seats. The view for the fan is incredible. What I'm most excited about is what this opportunity provides for us to reinvent how we do game day at Northwestern football and ultimately impacts the experience for our players," Braun said.

East Lansing — ****** ody on Michigan State's football roster published Wednesday is wearing the No. 1 jersey. That's for a particular reason.
Carrying over a tradition from his days at Northwestern's football coach, Pat Fitzgerald will have his Michigan State team vote on who gets to wear the No. 1 jersey. The selection will be based on who embodies team principles.
"We're gonna have that tradition started up this year," Fitzgerald said Wednesday at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. "... That person has an opportunity to wear No. 1 if they want. And if they have an affinity with their jersey, they'll put a No. 1 sticker on their helmet, but they'll be identified as the Spartan because he's the one that embodies our values — the work ethic, the commitment, the giving of himself for the greater good of his teammates better than anybody else."
More: Pat Fitzgerald hits right notes at media day: 'I understand our rivalry'
For Fitzgerald's old Northwestern teams, wearing the No. 1 was a special right for certain players who, though they may not have been the most talented or touted, gave their all. It's meant to be the antithesis of what No. 1 usually means — the kind of ****** y bravado that can rip a locker room apart.

The Florida State Seminoles had to rely on their run game quite a bit in 2025 due to the inconsistency of former quarterback Tommy Castellanos. As a team, they racked up 2,624 yards in 12 games.
Running the ball well is something that FSU has done well under head coach Mike Norvell, who is back taking over play-calling duties. There's some big-time talent in the room for this season, and with transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels taking over as the starter, with the inconsistencies he's had, a strong run game will be beneficial and take some of the responsibility off of him.
With fall camp kicking off on Wednesday and the regular season set to begin in a month, let's dive into the running back room at Florida State.
RB Departures
Gavin Sawchuk: Sawchuk led all FSU running backs last year with 486 yards and eight touchdowns (second on the team in both categories) after playing with the Oklahoma Sooners for three seasons. He transferred to the Northwestern Wildcats for his final two years of eligibility.

It was the final Day 3 of Big Ten football media days 2026 in Chicago, and with it, we heard from the last third of the league's coaches and teams, after hearing from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and players on Wednesday. On Thursday, we heard from Matt Rhule (Nebraska), Mike Locksley (Maryland), Kyle Whittingham (Michigan), David Braun (Northwestern), Jedd Fisch (Washington), and Curt Cignetti (Indiana).
If you are like us, we are interested in what all the head coaches in the conference have to say, and if so, then we have all of the press conferences from each head coach on Thursday for you. In this case, we've got one very interesting to Ohio State fans: new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham and what he had to say about where the Wolverine program is and what might be in store for this year.
Have a listen. Can Whittingham turn the page from all the drama the Michigan program has seen over the last few years and get quarterback Bryce Underwood to take the all-important next step in development this season?
We'll continue to bring you sound bites, news, and commentary from the next couple of days at Big Ten media days, so be sure to check back.
Contact/Follow us BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes, and opinion. Follow Phil Harrison on X.

CHICAGO (AP) — Indiana coach Curt Cignetti says he's "stalking complacency" as he makes sure there's no championship hangover now that he's orchestrated one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football history.
Cignetti took over a program that had gone 9-27 the three years before his arrival and led it to College Football Playoff appearances in each of his first two seasons, including a 2025 national ****** le.
He wants his program to maintain the same edge it carried while working its way up.
"We have a way of doing things," Cignetti sad. "We've got guys that have been together, and all we do is win."
Indiana's stunning two-year run under Cignetti already has allowed the traditional Big Ten also-ran to shed its status as the Bowl Subdivision program with the most losses in history. That dubious honor now belongs to conference rival Northwestern.

Texas A&M's 2026 season opener vs. Missouri State is a little over five weeks away, while the Aggies' preseason will kick off early next month. It's been a busy but quiet offseason for coach Mike Elko, who is entering his third season at the helm after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.
Accomplishing several key goals, including a record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, Elko signed his six-year extension just weeks before the end of the 2025 season, which was a smart move given his status as one of the top football minds, while Penn State reportedly looked to poach the New Jersey native before ultimately hiring Iowa State coach Matt Campbell.
Retaining 65% of the 2025 roster paired with 17 transfer portal additions and the 2026 signing class, Texas A&M's 2026 roster isn't lacking talent, especially with redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed returning under center for his second full starting season after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season.
On paper, Alabama's secondary can be compared to Texas A&M's deep cornerback and safety rotation, now featuring transfer CB Rickey Gibson and former Colorado safety Tawfiq Byard, while the Aggies' defensive line will be led by senior DT DJ Hicks and Northwestern transfer edge Anto Saka, who is already a favorite among NFL scouts.
Texas A&M is not viewed as an overwhelming favorite to make it back to the CFP, mainly due to tough road games vs. LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama, and Oklahoma, as well as hosting Texas at home. Still, A&M's roster is more than talented enough to compete with every opponent on the schedule, while the new 9-game SEC slate will affect all 16 teams in different ways.

CHICAGO − Pat Fitzgerald is back in the Windy City. Only this time, he's wearing green instead of purple.
The first-year Michigan State football coach returned to his roots to speak at the Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday, July 29. Fitzgerald, a native of nearby Midlothian, Illinois, became an All-American and College Football Hall of Fame linebacker at Northwestern before going on to coach his alma mater from 2006-22. The Spartans hired him Dec. 1 to replace Jonathan Smith, who was fired after two seasons in East Lansing.
MSU is picked to finish 17th in the 18-team Big Ten in the USA Today preseason poll. The Spartans went 4-8 last season and are 33-38 overall and just 18-35 in conference games since Mark Dantonio retired after the 2019 season. They have missed a bowl game in five of those six seasons and have not played in the postseason since 2021.
Fitzgerald was 110-101 in his 17 seasons at Northwestern with a 65-76 Big Ten record and two West Division **** les. He was dismissed prior to the 2023 season.

It's time for the annual post to highlight how the Mountain West Conference compares to the American Athletic Conference in a variety of important categories. Since this yearly post began, the American has had the advantage overall, although the MW narrowed the gap in 2024. Which one was the top Group of 5 conference in 2024? Read below to find out.
The Mountain West and American don't have many opportunities to play each other from season to season, and it's sad that that hasn't changed over the years. In 2024, the conferences played one another four times, with two of those being the CIC Trophy games, Air Force battling Army and Navy. The other two were Boise State opening against South Florida and Colorado State taking on Texas-San Antonio. Last season, all of those games ended in losses for the Mountain West teams, which is extremely disappointing. They have now lost head-to-head matchups to the American two seasons in a row.
The American's top tier enjoyed a successful season and has been seen as a top-heavy conference for years, with this year being no different. Memphis led the way with a 12-2 record (good for a winning percentage of .857). Behind them was Navy at 11-2 (.846), and Tulane at 11-3 (.786). The three-team average ends up being a .829 score for the American. On the other side of things, UNLV was the top Mountain West team with a 10-4 record (.714 winning percentage). Then, New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Hawaii all finished with identical 9-4 records (.692). Taking the three-team average, and it comes out to a .699 winning percentage, which is a drop from 2025. Unfortunately for the Mountain West, even a good season and a top-heavy bunch of teams, the conference couldn't measure up to the American, which takes this one once again.
Playing games against Power 4 teams is usually a great measuring stick for any mid-major conference. The Mountain West continues to have a poor showing in this category, but improved in 2025, going 4-12 in 2025. That is an increase of one win from 2024, though they played four fewer games this past season. The wins over Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (twice) represent a 25% winning percentage for the conference.
The American ended up improving as well, going from 1-14 to 6-13, which amounts to a 32% winning percentage. The additional five games against P4 teams should be noted as well. Beating Northwestern, Army, and Oklahoma State last year may not mean much, but wins over Florida, Duke, and Arkansas look impressive to varying degrees. It's nice to see both conferences improve, but the American takes this category back in 2025.

GEORGETOWN, July 28 (Reuters) - The captain and two crew members of a passenger ferry in Guyana that capsized were charged with murder on Tuesday, more than a week after the disaster killed 73 people and left 30 others still missing.
The MV Barima, an 87-year-old ship, sank on July 18 while traveling from the capital, Georgetown, to the northwestern village of Port Kaituma.
Captain Kevin Price, 40, and crew members Rondell Dwayne Roberts, 42, and Delon Granderson, 33, appeared before a Georgetown court on murder charges, police said.
They were not required to enter pleas, and Reuters could not immediately contact the defendants or their representatives for comment.

On the ESPN College Football podcast, Dan Wetzel asked: is Michigan football poised to surprise pundits across the sport in 2026? His compatriot there on the writing side, Bill Connelly, notes in his preview that if a few things go right for the maize and blue, a deep run could be in their future.
In his feature-length write-up on the conference, the Wolverines aren't one of Connelly's contenders for the ****** le and beyond -- such belongs to Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana -- but Michigan is in the same category as USC, Penn State, Washington, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, UCLA, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Northwestern as schools that 'could be a couple of breaks away from a run."
Of course, Michigan is thought of much more highly than, say, UCLA, Maryland, and Northwestern, but Connelly asks a couple of questions that the answer will determine the team's ceiling in 2026.
Whittingham's bona fides are top notch, but I do have two big questions.
1. Can the hard-nosed overachiever coach properly connect with and motivate a roster of blue-chippers? Going from managing a roster of chip-on-their-shoulder underdogs (relatively speaking) to leading higher-caliber recruits with higher expectations has tripped up plenty of coaches through the years. And that's without getting into the fact that Whittingham is 66 years old. (Between Patterson and Whittingham, it's a big year for 66-year-olds.)

The annual preseason Big Ten football poll has been revealed, and the Wisconsin Badgers are outside of the top 10.
In an 18-team conference, the Badgers found themselves earning 207 points, which is good for 12th place, according to cleveland.com.
Team ranked below Wisconsin include: UCLA, Northwestern, Maryland, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Purdue.
The Boilermakers sit at last place with just 45 points, so it's optimistic knowing Wisconsin gets to play them this season.
Even after winning the National Championship, Indiana only sits at No. 3. Their 509 points weren't good enough to take down No. 2 Oregon (527 points) or the expected No. 1 Ohio State (540 points).

A popular college football social media account believes the Spartans will reach a bowl game for the first time in five seasons.
CFB Home -- a social media account with nearly 125,000 followers on X -- released their game-by-game predictions for the Spartans this upcoming season, and they are higher on Michigan State than most. CFB Home has Michigan State finishing the 2026 season with a 6-6 overall record and 4-5 mark in Big Ten play.
CFB Home has Michigan State opening the year with a pair of victories over Toledo and Eastern Michigan. From there, they see the Spartans dropping a pair of games against Notre Dame and Nebraska before winning ripping off three straight wins against Wisconsin, Illinois and Northwestern.
Michigan State is sitting at 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play following this impressive three-game winning streak. But from there, things get rough, with CFB Home predicting four straight losses against UCLA, Michigan, Washington and Oregon. Luckily, Michigan State is able to beat to Rutgers on the final game of the season to reach bowl eligibility.
Michigan State is entering the season with low expectations. The Spartans' wins over/under total is set at 4.5, meaning CFB Home has the Spartans clearing the over by two games this fall.

Former Ohio State football offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has once again captured the attention of fans — this time because of his wardrobe.
On July 21, Kelly went viral on social media for wearing a Northwestern hard hat and a purple vest while speaking to the media at Ryan Field, Northwestern's updated football stadium that is still under construction.
"Chip Kelly. Purple vest. Hard hat. Football guy," read the caption on the original post.
"Imagine telling a Duck fan in 2010 that this was the future for Chip Kelly," wrote one account that reposted the picture.
"Chip Kelly has never more perfectly embodied Chip Kelly in his life," wrote another.

The most talked about and market moving research calls around Wall Street are now in one place. Here are today's research calls that investors need to know, as compiled by The Fly.
Top 5 Upgrades:
Truist upgraded CoreWeave (CRWV) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $126, down from $131. As more enterprises move toward open models and sovereign AI, the firm believes demand for compute will only increase, benefiting CoreWeave, though shares trade at a significant discount to neoclouds despite the company's "leadership position."
Stifel upgraded DigitalOcean (DOCN) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $160, up from $135. The firm cites valuation for the upgrade with the shares down 30% from recent highs.
Wells Fargo upgraded Idacorp (IDA) to Equal Weight from Underweight with a price target of $154, up from $121. Wells' higher estimates indicate the shares are cheaper than it screens.
Wells Fargo upgraded NorthWestern Energy (NWE) to Equal Weight from Underweight with a price target of $62, up from $54. The pending merger with Black Hills (BKH) has cleared every hurdle except Montana, the firm tells investors in a research note.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United States conducted a new round of airstrikes early Monday targeting Iran after announcing the death of another American service member, hitting around a northwestern city believed to be home to underground missile bases. Iran responded by launching an attack targeting Bahrain, the home of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, and Kuwait.
The latest attacks again showed how, step by step, the U.S. and Iran have inched closer to all-out war as last month's interim deal meant to permanently end the fighting has crumbled and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has largely stalled. Both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure relied on by millions of people.
Meanwhile, benchmark Brent crude rose Monday above $90 a barrel, further fueling a global energy crisis sparked by the conflict. An average gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. also rose to $4, a key metric for Americans that puts more pressure on their wallets ahead of midterm elections this fall.
The U.S. military said the service member was killed in Iraq on Saturday during the "controlled detonation" of a downed Iranian drone.
"We hit them very hard again tonight," U.S. President Donald Trump said. "And we did that in honor of the" soldiers killed, he said.
