Duke football and third-year head coach Manny Diaz get the 2026 season underway in just over a month.
The reigning ACC champions open fall camp on Wednesday, Aug. 5, exactly one month before their season-opener against Tulane at Wallace Wade Stadium (Sept. 5, 3:30 p.m. ET). Duke is coming off a 9-5 finish in 2025 that saw it win its first ACC ***** le since 1989.
The Blue Devils' 2026 home slate includes Tulane (Sept. 5), Stanford (Sept. 19), William & Mary (Sept. 26), UNC (Oct. 17), Boston College (Oct. 31) and Clemson (Nov. 20).

The first thing Duke has is coaching-staff stability. Head Coach Manny Diaz returns for his third season at the helm, with Offensive Coordinator Jonathan Brewer, Defensive Coordinator Jonathan Patke and Special Teams Coordinator Gabe Infante at his side. In today's college football landscape, maintaining all your coordinators is not a given.
Strength and Conditioning Coach David Feeley is back for his fifth season at Duke. He is considered one of the best in the business, and his continued presence is a boon for the program. Feeley previously worked with Coach Diaz at Miami.
There has been movement with some of the position coaches, so Duke has a new Defensive Ends Coach (Trent Harris), and a new Running Backs Coach (Rodney Freeman II), but overall the staff is remarkably stable. Coaching staff stability is a big plus for a program.
Trent Harris comes to Duke from Illinois, where he coached outside linebackers the past two years. Harris played defensive end at Miami under Manny Diaz.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jase Bowen hit his first major league homer, Ty France drove in three runs and three San Diego Padres pitchers combined on a two-hitter Friday night in a 7-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
San Diego (56-54) sits a game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the third and final National League wild card.
In the fourth inning, the 25-year-old Bowen launched a 384-foot solo drive to left field that put the Padres up 4-0. France added a two-run single later in the inning before capping the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Manny Machado drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, and Luis Campusano extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single. Xander Bogaerts grounded into a double play that scored Jackson Merrill in the third.
Fernando Tatis Jr. got his 150th career stolen base in the fourth, swiping third for his 26th steal this year.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. went 5 for 5 with two RBIs in the first five-hit game of his career, and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the San Diego Padres an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.
Tatis became the first major leaguer with five singles in a game this season and the first Padres player to do it since Adrián González on Aug. 11, 2009.
Manny Machado had three hits for the Padres, including an eighth-inning single that was misplayed by right fielder Jake McCarthy for an error — allowing Jake Cronenworth to score the tying run.
San Diego loaded the bases against Jimmy Herget (0-4) with ***** ody out in the ninth on Jackson Merrill's leadoff single and two walks. Merrill scored on Bogaerts' fly to center field.
Mason Miller (3-1) struck out all three batters in the top of the ninth to keep it tied at 7.

SAN DIEGO – After spending the later innings feeling like they were pushing a rock up a hill, the San Diego Padres finally got over the top on a game-winning sacrifice fly by Xander Bogaerts in a wild 8-7 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Petco Park.
Fernando Tatis Jr. set a new career high with five hits while driving in a pair of RBI, as the Padres (54-53) cracked a home-season-best 16 hits to extend their win streak to four games. Encinitas-born Mickey Moniak hit a two-run home run, the eighth of his career against San Diego, part of his three-RBI night for the Rockies (42-56), who saw four costly errors all come back to hurt.
Jackson Merrill led off the ninth with a single, his third of the game, then stole second and advanced to third when Hunter Goodman's throw went into center field. Back-to-back walks to Luis Rengifo and pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song cued up Bogaerts' decisive RBI, which made for the seventh walk-off win of the season by San Diego and their third time against Colorado.
The Padres rallied to tie in three consecutive innings, with Manny Machado lacing a single to the right-center alley that Hunter McCarthy bobbled and allowed Jake Cronenworth to score in the eighth. Mason Miller then came on to set the Rockies down in order, whiffing all three he faced to set the stage and ultimately earn his third win.
Reliever Adrian Morejon was able to limit the damage in the top, as after a Bogaerts error loaded the bases and a walk to Ezequiel Tovar pushed across a run, the lefty got a ground out to end the inning.

The San Diego Padres stumbled out of the All-Star break dropping back-to-back series on the road to the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves. Each loss, four in all, seemed to be another nail in the coffin on the 2026 season. The Padres limped into their final series of the road trip against the Miami Marlins with their season seemingly hanging in the balance. Anything less than a winning series would have surely resulted in the team looking to offload expiring contracts at the deadline relegating the remaining players on the roster to play out the string of games before heading to the offseason.
The Padres had other plans and instead of just winning the series against the Marlins, they swept the team from South Beach and handed them their 12th consecutive loss. San Diego had a thrilling win in the third and final game of the series that saw the Padres enter the eighth inning trailing by two runs. Manny Machado hit a two-run home run to tie the game and two batters later, Jackson Merrill connected on a solo home run to put San Diego in the lead. Luis Campusano later added an RBI-single in the inning and the Friar Faithful got a glimpse of what the Padres could be — and were expected to be.
Starting pitching has been problematic for San Diego, but the offense has come to life in the past week. Dubois would also call out some rivals who she believes to be ducking the smoke.
"It's very disappointing. The goal was to fight either Elif Turhan or Stephanie Han. Unfortunately the Elif Turhan fight fell apart and unfortunately the Stephanie Han fight is something that has to wait, she just fought recently. So, she's resting or recovering and hopefully we can get that fight end of the year, that's the plan. I'm disappointed with Elif. Michael King deserved better than what he got. The San Diego Padres starter completed six innings and scattered five hits while allowing just one run to the Atlanta Braves. The Padres did nothing to support him on offense and his night ended with Atlanta holding onto a 1-0 lead. Jackson Merrill helped out in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to tie the game, but that was all the offense could muster in support of King.
San Diego and Atlanta entered the eighth inning with the teams still tied at 1-1. The Padres went down in order in the top of the eighth inning. Wandy Peralta took the mound in the bottom half of the frame and had a complete meltdown that saw the Braves score four runs on three hits with a walk in just 1/3 of an inning pitched. He was replaced on the mound by Randy Vasquez who had his own struggles over 2/3 of an inning as he allowed two more runs on four hits with a strikeout.
The six-run inning by the Braves set the stage for the Padres in the top of the ninth. The game appeared all but over before the San Diego offense suddenly came to life. Pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song flied out to start the frame, but Xander Bogarts walked and Jake Cronenworth doubled to put runners at second and third. Gavin Sheets followed with an RBI-single to make the score, 7-2. Sheets advanced to second base on a wild-pitch and the Padres had runners at second and third with one out. Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate and hit a triple that got under the glove of Atlanta center fielder Michael Harris II and rolled all the way to the wall. The hit by Tatis made the score, 7-4.
San Diego tacked on its final two runs when Luis Rengifo connected on a two-run home run off Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias to make the score 7-6 before he struck out Manny Machado and Ty France to end the game. Based on the recent success and only being down a run, those were the two batters the Padres would have wanted at the plate, neither of them were able to come through in a big moment.
San Diego will try to win Game 4 in Atlanta to force a split this morning at 9:15 a.m.

It's hard to believe that this coming January will mark ten years. I remember when I heard the news. It hit me like a slug hitting a deer. I had to sit for a few minutes, reading and re-reading the story. My brain refused to believe that the news was true, but eventually reality set in.
All of us have different memories and reactions to the death of Yordano Ventura. Things we know for certain: he had one of the best arms the Royals ever signed and developed. His stuff was electric. He had a fiery attitude that we loved and opponents often hated. He had his share of dustups, notably with Mike Trout, Manny Machado, Jose Bautista, and the entire roster of the Chicago White Sox. There was also a tiff with Brett Lawrie that looked personal. Even when he was in the wrong, we stood behind him because he was our guy.
I loved the way he would swing his right leg around after delivering one of his blazing fastballs.
We felt like he was just starting to tap into his massive potential. Then he was gone way too soon.
His postseason appearances were must-see TV. Ned Yost unwittingly used him as a reliever in the 2014 Wild Card Game, which ended in a spectacular blowup. He was brilliant against the Angels in the Division Series, tossing five-hit ball over seven shutout innings. He threw 95 pitches in that game. Twenty-two of those pitches reached 100 mph or more. When you add in his devastating curveball, well, sometimes there's just no chance for the hitter. He was brilliant against the Giants in the World Series, allowing just two runs in 12.1 innings of work.

Darian Mensah could have been complimentary of his time playing at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to an improbable ACC **** le last season.
He could have credited Manny Diaz, the Duke coaching staff and his former teammates in helping him raise his game to another level, one that made him so valuable that Miami came in and swooped him away at the last minute this past offseason.
Heck, he could have passed on any question regarding his old team, and that would have been better than what came out of the quarterback's mouth at ACC media days last week. Instead, the California native decided it was best to use his platform to blast Duke and the environment he found himself in last year in Durham.
"At Duke there was kind of some friction when I first got there because my dollar amount was released," Mensah said. "Everybody sees that, and it was just hard for me to be the new guy, and everybody said, 'Oh, you're getting paid more than me, and I've been here for X amount of years.' At Miami, the culture is different, and it just feels like family and actually feels like I'm at home."

A rough eight cost them.
Hoffman in. Xander Bogaerts, leading off, ground one softly (63.4 mph) up the middle, but between second and short. Ernie Clement got to it too deep to make a play. Bogaerts stole second. Manny Machado lined a single to center, scoring the run. Gavin Sheets ground one at Andrés Giménez, but Clements was slow getting to second so they couldn't get the lead runner. The out at first wasn't enough. I didn't understand why Clements couldn't get to the bag before the base runner. They had a shot at a double play. After that, a steal of third and a sac fly brought in the go ahead run. That was the game.
Barker talked about it after and watching it, again, I still don't get what Ernie was doing.
And the bottom of the ninth went too quick. Ground out, pop out, strikeout.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado singled in the tying run in the eighth inning and Ty France's sacrifice brought in the go-ahead run for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on Sunday to take two of three.
The Padres won for just the fifth time in 16 games and pulled back to .500 at 48-48.
The defending American League champion Blue Jays head into the All-Star break at 45-51.
Machado's third single brought in Xander Bogaerts, who hit a leadoff single against Jeff Hoffman (5-6) and stole second. Machado advanced on Gavin Sheets' groundout and was replaced by Jase Bowen, who stole third and scored on France's sac fly.
Mason Miller, San Diego's only All-Star, retired the side in the ninth on eight pitches for his 25th save.

The San Diego Padres brought the winning run to the plate with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays. Xander Bogaerts stepped into the batter's box with Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. on first and second base after the Padres recorded three consecutive two-out hits off Padres closer Louis Varland. Bogaerts worked the count full, but on the final pitch of the at-bat he hit a routine ground ball to third base, which resulted in the final out of the game to give San Diego a 5-3 loss at the hands of Toronto in their series opener at Petco Park on Friday night.
The Padres came into the bottom of the ninth trailing, 5-2. Jake Cronenworth pinch hit and struck out to open the inning and Luis Rengifo hit a deep fly ball into left field for the second out of the inning. Luis Campusano lined a ball back through the middle of the infield and Tatis followed with a line drive single through the right side of the infield. Merrill stepped in and connected on another base hit, which scored Campusano to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Bogaerts represented the winning run and Petco Park was waiting to erupt with a big hit from the San Diego shortstop. Bogaerts started the scoring in the game in the bottom of the first inning when he connected on a two-run home run off starter Shane Bieber to put the Padres up 2-0. Considering the speed of Tatis and Merrill and the fact that they were on the move on a 3-2 pitch, a base hit by Bogaerts might have tied the game, but it would have likely brought San Diego within a run with Manny Machado set to come to the plate. However, that was not how the 3-2 pitch played out. Instead, Bogaerts bounced a ground ball to Toronto third baseman Kazuma Okamoto who threw across the diamond in time to get Bogaerts to end the inning and the game.
Okamoto proved to have the game-winning hit for the Blue Jays in the top of the fifth inning. Padres starter JP Sears allowed two of the first three batters of the inning to reach base on singles and Jhony Brito came in to face Vladamir Guerrero Jr. Brito allowed an RBI-single and Toronto tied the game at 2-2. Brito then faced Okamoto who won a seven-pitch at-bat with a 377-foot three-run home run into the left field bleachers to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead.
San Diego will try to stop a two-game losing streak in the second game of the series against Toronto today at 5:40 p.m.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- San Diego's offense went from one extreme to the other in a 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks (46-47) on Thursday night.
The Padres (46-47) had the perfect opportunity to win their first series since sweeping the Atlanta Braves on June 24th.
Instead, they managed just three hits, two from Manny Machado and one from Fernando Tatis Jr. The duo combined to go 3-for-7, with Machado providing the Padres' lone run on a home run. The rest of the team went 0-for-20.
The offensive struggles came one night after San Diego collected 13 hits, scored 10 runs, and had every starter except one record a hit.
Much of that was due to Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly, who allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six while also improving to 10-6 in his career against the Padres.

He hit the deck early against a faded Chris Arreola, settled for a tight decision over Luis Ortiz despite three knockdowns, then fought Jarrell Miller to a majority draw two years ago. Though he's back with Manny Robles for this one, he's also 36 and notoriously volatile, so there's no telling whether he'll be a factor in the post-Usyk heavyweight world.

After a week straight of losing games, the San Diego Padres finally put one back in the win column. With their win on Sunday afternoon, the club staved off the sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers. That, thankfully, put an end to the Friars’ eight-game losing streak. It has felt like much longer than that, but the club has started to look better. The last three games have felt especially healthy, despite San Diego being 1-2 in that span.
Starter JP Sears pitched four hitless innings against L.A. before giving up a single in the bottom of the fifth. Bench coach Randy Knorr, who replaced Craig Stammen after the latter was ejected in the first inning, decided to pull Sears for unknown reasons. San Diego’s starters have looked better lately. They’ll need to keep that up against the Arizona Diamondbacks heading into their final homestand before the All-Star break.
Pfaadt has been a solid back-end starter for Arizona, but he’s struggled lately. This season, the righty owns a 5.40 ERA through just 43 1/3 innings pitched. Pfaadt’s pitched better as of late, but he still owns a 4.50 ERA across his last 14 innings.
San Diego should have no problems tagging the righty for some runs. Jake Croneworth owns a lifetime .409 batting average against him (22 at-bats). Similarly, third baseman Manny Machado has a 1.061 OPS versus Pfaadt. Both will look to continue that success.
After completely turning his season around, Buehler had a setback in his last start. Buehler had given up just one run apiece in every start he made in June. Then came his last outing against the Chicago Cubs. Nine earned runs in just four innings of work. It was, by far, the righty’s roughest outing this season.

On Saturday, Eala’s blossoming development took its biggest step yet, as the 21-year-old knocked out defending champion Iga Swiatek on Centre Court to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon. It can feel as if Eala breaks new ground for her country wherever she goes. At Wimbledon, history is once again being written in real time. Eala is the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of a grand slam, having become the first player from her country to win a main draw match at the Championships at the start of the week.
The Philippines is a country of roughly 112 million people - the archipelago in south-east Asia is the 12th most populated country in the world. It is also a nation where its few sports stars are idolised like gods. Eala can remember how her neighbourhood would come to a standstill when legendary boxing champion Manny Pacquiao had a ******* le fight, the occasion feeling like a “holiday” as friends and families took the day off work and came together to watch Pacquiao fly their flag. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dalton Rushing tied career highs with four hits and four RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied from an early six-run deficit for a 12-7 victory over the skidding San Diego Padres on Thursday night.
Kyle Tucker added four hits to equal a career best and reached base five times. Andy Pages tied it with a two-run double in the fourth inning, and the Dodgers scored 12 straight runs to win for the eighth time in 10 games.
Roki Sasaki gave up six runs over three innings, including three homers, but the Los Angeles bullpen allowed just one run the rest of the way. Will Klein (3-2) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win.
It was the Dodgers' biggest comeback victory since they trailed by six runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022.
Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Jake Cronenworth homered in the first two innings for the Padres, who matched a season high with their sixth consecutive loss. Three of those defeats have come against the Dodgers.

Take a flyball pitcher in JP Sears and put him on the mound in Wrigley Field with the wind blowing out you get a final score that looks like a bad football game. That was the case Tuesday night when the San Diego Padres suffered a 9-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Sears was staked to a lead thanks to a leadoff home run from Fernando Tatis Jr. to start the game, but the 1-0 advantage was short-lived because a Tatis throwing error in the bottom of the inning allowed Seiya Suzuki to reach safely and advance to second base with two outs. Sears allowed an RBI-single to Carson Kelly and the game was tied 1-1 after the first inning.
The trouble for the left-hander came in the bottom of the second inning. Sears allowed a one-out solo home run to Dansby Swanson to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. San Diego did mount a comeback in the top of the eighth inning when Gavin Sheets hit a three-run home run after a walk by Ty France and a one-out single by Xander Bogaerts. Tatis stepped to the plate later in the inning with two outs and connected on his second solo home run of the game and the second home run in the inning for San Diego, but that was where the scoring ended for the Padres and now, they find themselves looking to Walker Buehler to avoid a three-game sweep today at 11:20 a.m.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Freddie Freeman drew a tiebreaking, bases-loaded walk off suddenly wild Michael King in the fifth inning and Mookie Betts followed with a two-run single for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 Sunday to take two of three.
The two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers, who have baseball's best record at 54-30, extended their lead to 10 games over the Padres in the NL West.
The teams will meet again Thursday through Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
Manny Machado homered off Emmet Sheehan with one out in the fourth to tie it at 1. It was Machado's 15th of the season.
King, who allowed Shohei Ohtani's opposite-field RBI single to left with one out in the third, got into trouble immediately in the fifth when he issued a leadoff walk to Alex Freeland. He got Chuckie Robinson to line out but allowed the next four batters to reach.

The Los Angeles Dodgers took a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, earning the series win on the road against their NL West rivals.
Emmet Sheehan took the mound for the Dodgers, and responded well to the reassurance manager Dave Roberts gave him before the game. After a rough four starts this month, Sheehan finally looked like himself and threw five innings of one-run baseball for LA, striking out five batters in the process.
Neither team generated much offense through the first couple of innings of the game, but the Dodgers made a breakthrough in the third inning. Alex Freeland singled to lead off the inning, and catcher Chuckie Robinson—who stood in for Dalton Rushing in the series finale—bunted Freeland over to second. Shohei Ohtani stepped up to the plate next, and brought Freeland home with a bloop single into left.
The Dodgers managed to maintain their lead into the fourth inning, but the Padres found their way back into the game. Manny Machado hit a high fly ball which just squeaked over the fence in left field to level the game at one apiece.
LA immediately responded afterwards, though, and took control of the game in the fifth. Padres starter Michael King struggled with his control in the fifth, walking Freeland to get him on base once again. After a failed bunt attempt from Robinson, King went on to walk Ohtani and load the bases after plunking Andy Pages.

The Dodgers were left hitless over their first two innings against Michael King, but Alex Freeland tallied their first hit with an opposite field single to lead off the top of the third. Chuckie Robinson put Freeland into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Shohei Ohtani brought in the game’s first run with an RBI single.
Emmet Sheehan mowed down San Diego’s offense over his first three innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three. His one-run cushion was short-lived as Manny Machado connected for his second home run against him this season in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Freeland reached base for the second time against King with a leadoff walk to begin the top of the fifth inning, but Robinson failed to move him over as the bunt attempt found King’s glove. Ohtani worked the second walk of the inning to give the Dodgers multiple baserunners for the first time, and King subsequently plunked Pages for the second time to load the bases with one out. Freddie Freeman gave the Dodgers the lead back with a walk, and Mookie Betts broke it open with a two-run single, knocking King out of the game after just 4 1/3 innings. Betts added another hit in the seventh inning, finishing the weekend with an average of .333 (4-12), two home runs and six RBI.
Sheehan walked Song for the second time before plunking Fernando Tatis Jr. with two strikes on him and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Samad Taylor representing the potential tying run, Sheehan struck him out for the third time to get out of the jam.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- San Diego (40-37) earned a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves (48-29) on Monday night thanks to the right arm of Michael King and the bat of Manny Machado.
The Padres opened a difficult homestand against the Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two of the strongest teams in the National League, and they needed strong performances from both players.
King entered the game coming off a rollercoaster five-start stretch in which he allowed six home runs. On Monday, however, he looked much more like himself.
“I think he's got something with the Braves that feels pretty good for him,” Padres manager Craig Stammen said. “Found his stuff tonight, had good fastball command, had the change up really working, sweeper was going good too. Anytime he gave up a hit, he got right back at the next couple hitters and got him out.”
King pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out five. It was the first time he had not allowed an earned run since May 18 against the Dodgers.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado homered and Michael King pitched seven strong innings for his first win since May 18 as the San Diego Padres beat the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves 1-0 on Monday night.
The Braves lost for the eighth time in 11 games and were overtaken by the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors. The Padres, coming off a 4-5 trip through Baltimore, St. Louis and Texas, face the Braves for three games before hosting the Dodgers for three games this weekend.
Machado homered into the Padres' bullpen beyond the center-field fence leading off the fourth against Grant Holmes (4-4). Machado came in hitting just .179 but connected for his team-leading 14th homer and 43rd RBI.
Machado also doubled leading off the eighth for San Diego's fourth hit. Ten of his last 13 hits have been for extra bases.
King (5-6) held the Braves to six singles while striking out five and walking none. The Braves had runners on second and third with two outs in the second before King retired Jorge Mateo.

The Braves offense was lifeless against Michael King and the San Diego bullpen on Monday night, losing 1-0 to drop their second game in a row.
It was more of the same for Grant Holmes, who labored through 4 2/3 innings. He hung a slider to struggling Manny Machado in the fourth inning that was rocketed over the center field wall for San Diego’s lone early run. Holmes issued five walks and struck out four, including back-to-back walks in the fifth that prompted Walt Weiss to remove him from the game. Credit to Weiss and Didier Fuentes, who entered the game and promptly struck out Gavin Sheets to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Holmes ought be in the bullpen. I’m just not sure what other options the Braves have given the current state of things.
The Braves had the leadoff runner on a handful of innings against King and Co., but they were unable to get a run across despite numerous opportunities. There was a hack-at-everything approach on Monday night, which obviously did not work. They also hit a half-dozen rockets at center fielder Jackson Merrill, who caught them all.
The series will continue tomorrow night from Petco Park with JR Ritchie hoping to right the ship after a rough start against the Giants last week. Ritchie will be opposed by To Be Announced, a daunting opponent. First pitch will be half an hour earlier at 9:40 p.m. ET and will be carried by BravesVision.

ARLINGTON -- After rallying for an extra-inning victory behind a five-RBI performance from Manny Machado on Saturday, the San Diego Padres reverted to an all-too-familiar script Sunday afternoon, dropping the series finale 4-3 to the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
San Diego (39-37) entered Father's Day looking to avoid a sixth series loss in its last eight opportunities. Instead, a lineup that ranks at the bottom of Major League Baseball in most offensive categories failed to rally against a strong Texas bullpen that entered the day sixth in the majors in ERA.
When a team struggles to score runs, the margins are razor thin.
San Diego appeared poised to replicate Saturday's late-inning heroics in the ninth against reliever Jakob Junis. Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the frame with a pinch-hit single before Xander Bogaerts followed with a sharp base hit to center, putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs.
Despite the promising start and a chance to hand Junis his second blown save of the season, the next three Padres hitters were retired in order, sealing San Diego's 10th one-run loss of the year.

MLB is looking to make drastic changes to the draft. The league introduced a number of new proposals Thursday, which would eliminate high-school players from the event, significantly reduce the draft and hold a formal draft for international players, per multiple reports.
Changes to the domestic draft — the one fans watch on MLB Network every July — were first reported by J.J. Cooper of Baseball America. Under the new proposal, high-school players would no longer be eligible to put their names in the draft. The earliest players would be eligible for the MLB draft would be following their sophomore year of college, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Additionally, the league would cut the draft from 20 rounds to 12 rounds moving forward. Draft bonuses would be reduced by more than 50 percent under the proposal, which would give teams an ability to trade draft picks and “establish hard draft slots,” per Cooper. That would essentially guarantee the signing bonus a draftee would receive based on their draft slot.
The proposal, if adopted, could have massive consequences on the future of the sport. Often times, the biggest and best prospects in the game get drafted out of high school. While those picks can sometimes carry massive risk, they also carry massive reward. Alex Rodriguez, Clayton Kershaw, Manny Machado and Mike Trout are just a few examples of players who developed into superstars after being drafted out of high school. Bryce Harper wasn’t drafted out of high school, but left early and obtained his GED so he could be drafted at the same age as most high-school players.
Under the new proposal, those players would have to wait until after their sophomore year of college to be eligible for the draft. Under the current system, those players were already in the majors around that age. Harper and Machado made their debuts at age-19. Kershaw was 20.
