The father of a 10-year-old rescued from pounding surf off the California coast in a dramatic scene captured on video says he is beyond grateful to the teenage lifeguard who saved his son.
"He ran into that water despite those conditions that are deadly. You have 10 foot waves; you have riptides and currents coming in," Sumit Rai told The ****** ociated Press on Wednesday. "It is not safe for him to go into that water. So he's risking his own safety."
Rai's son Nathaniel was standing in shallow water when he lost his footing and was pulled into the ocean Saturday by powerful swells that suddenly came ashore at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, about 60 miles (about 100 kilometers) down the coast from San Francisco. Rai, who was in his home city of Dallas, said he heard about what happened when he spoke to his kids on the phone that evening.
"My son told me that he drowned and my son told me that he went unconscious," he said. "He was very subdued, still in a state of shock."
By the next morning, Rai had watched the video of the rescue that has since caught the attention of President Donald Trump.

Instead, New York decided not to risk using one of the most sought-after starting pitchers available ahead of Monday's MLB trade deadline. There is no indication that a trade has been completed, but the decision to scratch Peralta suggests talks may be advancing quickly. The Mets now have until Monday at 6 p.m. ET to find an acceptable deal.
Peralta has attracted interest from several contenders despite struggling during his first season in New York. The Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers have all been connected to Peralta. The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks have also reportedly scouted him recently.

Jake Paul wants Nate Diaz to be his opponent when "El Gallo" makes his cagefighting debut under the new MVP-PFL banner in early 2027. Probably because Diaz is 41 and held together by duct tape and Popsicle sticks. In addition, Paul already whooped Diaz in their DAZN boxing match in Dallas.
Paul's MMA debut was also "official" back in 2023 and never came to fruition.
"I've been talking about MMA and doing it for a long time, but it's official," Paul said in a social media video. "Now with this new partnership, I'm going to get into the cage. Nate Diaz, stop ducking. We need to make this happen for sports, to change the world, to change the history, and the landscape of combat sports forever. But don't worry, I am still boxing. Diaz already turned down a $15 million offer to fight Paul in summer 2024.
Paul, 29, helped MVP merge with PFL for a combat sports entity that will allow fighters to box and fight MMA under the same banner. The new-look promotion does not yet have a TV or streaming deal in place but is expected to make an announcement on that front in the coming weeks, if not sooner.

The Boston Red Sox have already made one trade for a middle infielder leading up to the trade deadline by adding Curtis Mead.
Mead is already on the injured list, but he is a piece that can help them for the next few seasons. However, reports suggest they are still in the market for a shortstop. With second base now taken, adding a shortstop would essentially put Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story out of starting jobs, at least in the long run.
"The Boston Red Sox are giving up on the idea that Trevor Story will help them when he returns from the IL and are aggressively trying to acquire a shortstop," wrote USA Today's Bob Nightengale on Friday. "They are asking about everyone from Zach Neto of the Angels to C.J. Abrams of the Washington Nationals to Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins to Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros."
In the short-term, Story and Mayer could come off the injured list and play second base while Mead recovers if the Red Sox add a shortstop. However, the team's search for a shortstop is telling of what they think of both Story and Mayer.

Inter Milan have renewed their interest in Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones as they continue their search for reinforcements ahead of the new Serie A season.
The Italian champions remain keen on signing the England international despite seeing an earlier approach rejected by Liverpool earlier this summer.

The Houston Texans still could be adding in a name or two ahead of their first preseason game.
According to the latest NFL transaction report, the Texans tried out both running backs Alexander Mattison and Hassan Haskins on Thursday. Neither player was signed to a contract, but the Texans could re-explore a deal later on this week.
The 28-year-old former Boise State running back has rushed for 2,370 yards during his five seasons in Minnesota and Las Vegas. During his rookie season, Mattison rushed for a career-high 700 yards that season, but he did not score a rushing touchdown and eventually lost the secondary role to Ty Chandler.
Haskins has only rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Right now, the Texans have little room for a running back with the additions of David Montgomery and Noah Whittington, but it doesn't hurt to at least look.

The UTEP men's basketball team's Mexican travels picked up another destination, as the Miners are headed to the Cancun Challenge.
The Cancun Challenge, which is Nov. 24-25, is a four-team Thanksgiving tournament where they will play the College of Charleston and either Kennesaw State or Eastern Michigan.
Two weeks later, they conclude the multi-national event at Don Haskins Center when they host North Dakota (not to be confused with new Mountain West member North Dakota State) on Dec. 5. That tip-off time has not been set but likely will be 7 p.m.
The Nov. 24 game against Charleston will tip at 6:30 p.m. MT, while the Nov. 25 game against the Kennesaw/Eastern Michigan winner is TBA.

Thirty-five years after Neil ****** moved from Scunthorpe United to Aston Villa, the club is still honouring part of the deal – in seats.
When Villa agreed a deal to sign defender ****** in 1991, they agreed a £400,000 fee and 2,000 seats for the Iron's ground at Glanford Park.
This summer, when Scunthorpe Stadium Manager Julie Taylor saw Villa revamping their North Stand and lower seating of the Trinity Stand, she asked whether any of the seats could be used to replace those at Glanford Park. Villa, a fellow team that plays in Claret and Blue, said yes.
"We weren't actually owed any, I was just a bit cheeky in asking if we could have some more!," Taylor told BBC West Midlands.
"Ours are broken and brittle after all these years, we could do with some more, so there was no harm in asking and that's what I did.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and the Justice Department are asking the Supreme Court to toss an $83 million defamation verdict won by writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of ****** ual ****** ault, saying he can't be sued for comments he made while he was president.
It's the second time Trump has asked the justices to nix damages awarded by a jury to Carroll, a longtime advice columnist and former TV talk show host. The Supreme Court refused in June to hear his appeal of another verdict, for $5 million, that found him liable for ****** ual abuse and defamation.
The latest case centers on comments Trump made during his first term as president. The Justice Department wants to invoke the Westfall Act, which shields government employees from being sued for doing their jobs.
"Absent this Court's intervention, the sitting President is facing nearly a hundred million dollars of personal liability for conduct that was well within the scope of his federal office," federal attorneys wrote. "That alone deserves this Court's attention."
The documents were reviewed Wednesday by The ****** ociated Press and expected to be formally docketed with the court shortly.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham was on hand to watch Dr. Anthony Fauci answer questions at Wednesday's Senate hearing, sitting behind him and standing up when Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) asked about people being "shamed" during the COVID-19 pandemic.
When Moreno requested people in the audience stand up if they had controversial beliefs or actions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and may have faced backlash for those beliefs or actions, Ingraham stood.
"All you have to do is look up from your lawyers and look at the people who were absolutely shamed for saying what we know now to be the truth," Moreno told Fauci during the hearing.
Ingraham, as the COVID-19 pandemic was raging in the U.S., criticized the use of coronavirus vaccines and said that Americans should not have to receive them.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, conservatives often raged against public health measures and advice meant to protect against the virus, including masking and vaccinations.
