A hushed stadium and a guitar set the stage for what followed.
Seattle opened its 2026 season two days ahead of the actual 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, with the tribute built into the Week 1 opener itself. A stadium announcement asked fans to observe a moment of silence, and the normally raucous Lumen Field crowd fell quiet.
Pearl Jam guitarist and Seattle native Mike McCready then took the field for the national anthem, trading a traditional rendition for a freewheeling, Hendrix-inspired guitar solo that leaned into the city's grunge roots.

The New England Patriots did a lot of things correctly in their season opener against the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. They went across the country and played an excellent game for three quarters in front of the crazed and full-throated 12s at Lumen Field in Seattle. However, their 10-3 lead disappeared in the fourth quarter as quarterback Drake Maye was careless with the football and that turned potential victory into a 13-10 defeat. Maye threw two of his three interceptions in the final quarter.
The final interception by Seahawk defensive back Josh Jobe came in the end zone came with 26 seconds remaining. Maye threw up a high-arching balloon to wide out Mack Hollins from the Seattle 16-yard line and Jobe was able to outfight the Patriots receiver for the ball. That play prevented New England from sending out PK Andy Borregales to attempt a 33-yard field goal that would have tied the game.
There is little doubt that Maye's pass was a poor effort and should not have been thrown. However, the play call made by offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was reckless. The Seattle pass defense had come to life in the fourth quarter and had shown the ability to blanket Patriots receivers. The pass into the end zone was a risky proposition when it was called by McDaniels and it put Maye at risk of throwing the costly interception.

Maye completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, but three interceptions and three sacks piled up as New England fell 13-10 to the Seattle Seahawks. Still, Maye showed his toughness on the ground, carrying the ball seven times for 47 yards.

San Diego native Maddie Mercado scored the game-winning goal in the 29th minute as Seattle Reign FC defeated San Diego Wave FC 1-0 at Lumen Field on Sunday evening. The 25-year-old forward has now scored in both matches against her hometown team this season.
Mercado has continued her breakout season for Seattle, leading the team with eight goals. Claudia ****** ey had a standout performance between the posts, logging six saves and securing a clean sheet before leaving the match late due to an injury. Reign backup goalkeeper Cassie Miller replaced ****** ey late in the match.
Since returning from the summer break, Seattle remains unbeaten at home and has entered the playoff picture with this result. They handed San Diego its first loss since early August, snapping its two-game win streak. Wave FC is now tied for third place in the standings alongside the NC Courage and Utah Royals, with 39 points.
San Diego played with 10 players for most of the match after rookie defender Mimi Van Zanten made a questionable challenge during a Seattle transition play. Van Zanten and Kennedy Wesley were the last line of defense, and Van Zanten tripped Maddie Dahlien far away from the net.
After further review, the referee deemed the play a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and gave her a red card in the 13th minute. Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall looked to his bench for defensive help, subbing on Brooklyn Courtnall for skilled forward Melanie Barcenas.

New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson might in line to start the regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as RB TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) remains sidelined.
Truth be told, Stevenson might have started anyway, but now he could see a lion's share of the carries, with only first-year RB Corey Kiner as the other active running back on the 53-man roster.
Henderson has been unable to practice since Aug. 24 due to an ankle injury, and his status for Week 1 is seriously in doubt. In Week 1 of the 2025 season, Stevenson played 46 snaps to just 25 for Henderson, and Stevenson sees more playing time because of his ability to pick up the blitz, and the coaching staff's confidence in his doing so.

The torch has officially been passed. The glorious era of the Allen family's ownership of the Seattle Seahawks has officially come to an end. In the week leading up to the season opener, ownership transferred from the Paul Allen estate to the Khosla family. This was inevitable following the NFL's approval in late August of the record $9.6 billion dollar sale Vinod Khosla put forth.
Now, Vinod and his family are in charge of the Seahawks. Vinod himself carries the ****** le of Chair of the Seahawks. His wife Neeru Khosla is now designated as the Controlling Owner of the Seahawks, and President of their Charitable Foundation. Their son, Neal Khosla, is the Vice Chair of the Seahawks.
But we at Seahawks Wire would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the legacy of Paul and Jody Allen, and what they gave to both the Seahawks franchise and the Pacific Northwest. Under their leadership, they helped transform the Seahawks into a national, championship caliber brand. Paul saved the city from being relocated to the Los Angeles area under the previous ownership of Ken Behring. Part of his purchase agreement included the Washington state legislature to hold a statewide referendum on funding a new stadium, which passed, paving the way for the iconic Lumen Field.
Paul Allen transformed a middling NFL franchise into one of the NFL's more recognizable teams. Seattle went from having only one division ****** le and four playoff appearances to nine division ****** les, three conference championships and the franchise's first Lombardi. The Seattle Seahawks have done what they were required to do at the end of preseason: form a 53-man roster and a practice squad.
There will undoubtedly be a slew of activity from now until the day before Seattle's opening night game against the New England Patriots on Sept. 9, so what you see right now is almost certainly not what you're going to see come Super Bowl banner raising night at Lumen Field. We still, ultimately, have a lot to talk about when it comes to Seattle's roster decisions.
The initial 53-man roster didn't feature too many shock moves, particularly when the Seahawks retained so many of their players from last season. Maybe there was a minor shock when the Seahawks used some 2027 draft capital to get Avery Smith from the Los Angeles Chargers, signifying yet another move focused on finding the right depth at cornerback. There was no need to fret, for example, about cornerback Trevon Diggs being released when he was destined for the 17-man practice squad, which may have yielded more eyebrow raisers.
None of Cody White, Jamie Sheriff, Noah Igbinoghene, D'Anthony Bell, or Jalan Gaines made Seattle's initial practice squad. We know what White won't be back after he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad, but we're still TBD on whether any of those players makes their way back to Seattle any time soon.

SEATTLE - An early second-half goal proved to be the night's only offense as the Houston Dash fell 1-0 to the Seattle Reign on Sunday night at Lumen Field.
Maddie Dahlien scored on an **** ist from Maddie Mercado in the 52nd minute, giving Seattle (8-4-8, 28 points) all it would need to hand Houston (7-5-9, 26) consecutive losses on the West Coast. The Dash lost to Bay FC on a late goal last weekend in San Jose, Calif.
The Dash had just one shot on goal to the Reign's five, and Seattle enjoyed 57% possession to largely control the match.
The Dash next play the Orlando Pride at 6 p.m. Sunday in Florida. Houston's next home game is Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Utah Royals visit Shell Energy Stadium for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff.

Twelve minutes into his Seattle Sounders FC debut, Dejan Joveljić opened his Rave Green account, announcing himself to the masses at Lumen Field on Saturday.
Following up with the would-be game-winning goal in the 48th minute added up to a dream debut for Seattle's new No. 9 before Robert Lewandowski and Chicago Fire FC spoiled the matinee match with a late response, forcing Joveljić and the Sounders to settle for a 2-2 tie.
Settling for the draw didn't dampen the excitement of bagging a brace in his Seattle debut.

Michael Duarte of the California Post reported that Nacua was spotted at a Bat Mitzvah on Aug. 23, and footage from the event captured a smiling Nacua dancing and clapping with the music.
"The Rams star wide receiver was reportedly invited by the parents of the girl celebrating her Bat Mitzvah, the Jewish milestone traditionally marking a girl's entrance into religious adulthood at age 12," Duarte wrote. "In the videos, Nacua helps carry the guest of honor toward the stage before later being spotted dancing among the crowd."

In his 47th season as head coach, Brogan enters with 432 career wins, which is 11 behind Herrington, the former Farmington Hills Harrison legendary head coach. Brogan surpassed former Birmingham Brother Rice head coach Al Fracassa for second on the all-time list last year. Last season, Lumen Christi went 11-3 in adding to its state record total of 15 state championships.
If Lumen Christi repeats that win total, Brogan will tie Herrington. There are games against bigger schools like Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo St. Francis De Sales, Detroit Country Day and Dearborn Divine Child, but if Lumen Christi can win at least two of those, avoid slip-ups in other games and go on another championship run, it's possible Brogan could celebrate breaking the record and a state championship at the same time in November at Ford Field.

Local broadcasters spent part of the telecast breaking down his career in blunt terms, and one factual mistake during the segment quickly caught fire online. Prescott has led the Cowboys to the playoffs four times since becoming the starter in 2016, but postseason success has remained elusive.
The Cowboys fell 17-7 to the Seahawks on Saturday night at Lumen Field, a result that mattered far less than the commentary happening in the booth.
Seahawks ******* ysts Michael Robinson and Michael Bennett, calling the game alongside play-by-play announcer Kate Scott, used part of the broadcast to question Prescott's postseason résumé nearly a decade into his career. Neither team's regular starters played meaningfully in the exhibition, with backups from both sides handling most of the snaps throughout the night.

The Dallas Cowboys were officially back on the field for the first time in 2026 on Saturday, and so too were the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. There were certainly some moments that reminded us all this is just the first appetizer towards the main course of week one regular season football.
The Cowboys won this appetizer of a game 17-7, falling behind 7-0 after the Seahawks went down the field with a 13-play scoring drive that proved to be their biggest offensive highlight of the night. The Cowboys were the only team to score the rest of the game, with 14 of these points coming on insane highlight reel catches for touchdowns by UDFA wide receiver Camden Brown, one from Sam Howell and one from Joe Milton.

On Dallas' first defensive possession to start the game, Caelen Carson and Shavon Revel Jr. were the two outside cornerbacks. Revel is technically a carryover from the failed Matt Eberflus defensive experiment of a year ago, but with so much missed time, he is primed to take to the coaching of Christian Parker and be the latest cornerback that takes leaps and strides under his secondary-focused coaching.
