Here are five story lines to watch going into the 2026 prep football season.
5. Will Jackson Lumen Christi head coach Herb Brogan surpass John Herrington as the state's all-time winningest coach?
In his 47th season as head coach, Brogan enters with 432 career wins, which is 11 behind Herrington, the former Farmington Hills Harrison legendary head coach. Brogan surpassed former Birmingham Brother Rice head coach Al Fracassa for second on the all-time list last year. Last season, Lumen Christi went 11-3 in adding to its state record total of 15 state championships.
If Lumen Christi repeats that win total, Brogan will tie Herrington. There are games against bigger schools like Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo St. Francis De Sales, Detroit Country Day and Dearborn Divine Child, but if Lumen Christi can win at least two of those, avoid slip-ups in other games and go on another championship run, it's possible Brogan could celebrate breaking the record and a state championship at the same time in November at Ford Field.

The San Francisco Giants announced a series of 10 transactions before their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. The biggest move of them all was placing shortstop Willy Adames on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left elbow.
Adames, 30, suffered an elbow injury in their series finale against the Boston Red Sox. He told NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic that it happened when he slid home in the first inning. Adames eventually left the game in the fifth inning.
The veteran infielder underwent an MRI after the game, which revealed the sprain. Pavlovic relays that it's a moderate sprain, which could mean a lengthy stint on the injured list.

Former Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse filed a defamation lawsuit against pageant organizers after the Miss USA organization stripped her of her **** le earlier this month, alleging they tried to portray her as a racist and targeted her because she is a "conservative Christian."
While the Aug. 5 announcement of the decision from Miss USA Chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur did not specify the conduct Boltinhouse was alleged to have committed, the statement said in part that the organization "does not tolerate racism, **** phobia, transphobia, nor language that strips any person of their dignity."
The suit, filed Sunday in Duplin County, North Carolina, Superior Court, alleges that the pageant organizers were "maliciously coordinating to publish a false public narrative portraying Brittany Boltinhouse as a racist, **** phobe, transphobe and intolerable bigot to be shunned from public life," largely based on social media posts.
WWAY - PHOTO: In this screen grab from a video, newly-crowned Miss North Carolina, Brittany Boltinhouse, speaks with ABC affiliate WWAY in July, 2026.
The defendants "then lied to the world that Brittany had confessed to being such an intolerant monster," the suit claims.

Christie Brinkley and her model daughter Sailor Brinkley Cook put their own twist on peekaboo cutouts for a Project Zero brunch.
The lookalike pair showed off their outfits in a video shared on August 24.
Brinkley shares the 28-year-old with ex-husband Peter Cook.
It's no secret that Christie Brinkley's youngest daughter, Sailor Brinkley Cook, looks like a carbon copy of her supermodel mom— and the 28-year-old is happily embracing the "mini-me" claims with lookalike style moments. Just days after twinning in red-hot looks at a Michael Kors dinner in the Hamptons, Brinkley and Cook posed in flowy summer dresses that both featured peekaboo sheer details.
The 72-year-old runway star had fans seeing double as she teamed up with Cook to promote a global initiative to help save coral reefs from extinction. In a video shared on August 24, Brinkley— who shares Cook with ex-husband Peter Cook—stepped out on screen in a dreamy white Zimmermann dress that was completely covered in sheer panels.

Rainn Wilson is defending Texas Senate candidate James Talarico's Christianity — and taking aim at the Democrat's Republican critics in the process.
The former Office star, 60, said Talarico's brand of faith is "achingly close" to that of Jesus Christ, during the Thursday, August 20 episode of his podcast, Soul Boom, according to a report Fox News Digital published on August 23.
ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGA
Wilson made the comments alongside New York Times journalist Ezra Klein, and the pair accused Texas GOP Senate candidate Ken Paxton and his supporters of hypocrisy for repeatedly attacking Talarico, 37, despite their own "aggressively professed Christianity," the outlet reported.
"Whenever I watch these attacks, I think, 'You all would have hated Jesus Christ,'" Klein, 42, said, as reported by Fox News Digital. "You would have found him to be the most annoying, weepy, worrying about the wrong people — the outsiders, the outcasts."

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to face the Mets in New York this week, as the Crew looks to continue their winning ways. The Brewers, at 81-50 this season, sit firmly atop the NL Central after winning each of their last three series against the Dodgers, Mariners, and Braves. The Mets, at 59-72, sit at the bottom of the NL East with the sixth-worst record in baseball. They've actually been a bit better the last couple of weeks, with a 6-3 record against the Nationals, Padres, and White Sox.
Milwaukee's lone position player on the IL is outfielder Sal Frelick, who is expected to return for this road trip. However, the team suffered a pair of injuries in Sunday's Little League Classic, as outfielder Garrett Mitchell exited after being hit by a pitch with what was categorized as a right forearm contusion, and first baseman Jake Bauers, who has been playing with a toe fracture this season, fouled a ball off his leg/foot, though he remained in the game. It's unclear if either player will miss more time, but overall, not the worst news on that front. On the mound, the Brewers are without Brandon Woodruff (potentially back before the end of the year after not needing surgery), JoJo Romero (late August), Abner Uribe (could be activated on Wednesday), Rob Zastryzny (TBD), Joel Kuhnel (late August), Brian Fitzpatrick (out for season), Quinn Priester (out for season), and Angel Zerpa (out for season).
The Mets are without first baseman Mark Vientos (on rehab ******* ignment), outfielder Juan Soto (September), and infielder Jorge Polanco (out for season). Old friend Devin Williams is on the injured list with a shoulder strain that will keep him out until at least September. Fellow pitchers Cionel Pérez (September), Justin Hagenman (TBD), Tylor Megill (out for season), and Reed Garrett (out for season) are also out.
Jake Bauers leads the Brewer offense with 23 homers, 19 doubles, and 75 RBIs this season, as he's slashing .273/.382/.503 in the best season of his career. Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras, Joey Ortiz, and Andrew Vaughn are among the other key contributors in recent weeks, while veteran Christian Yelich continues to suffer from the bad-luck bug. Gary Sánchez, Garrett Mitchell, David Hamilton, Cooper Pratt, and Luis Lara are also in the regular mix, with Jonathan Ornelas serving as some infield depth. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .254/.337/.396 (.733 OPS ranks seventh), with 120 homers (last), 650 runs scored (fifth), and 129 steals (third).
With Soto out, Carson Benge, Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, Francisco Lindor, and Francisco Alvarez lead New York's offense. Benge has 16 homers, 17 doubles, 53 RBIs, and 19 steals in what has been a solid season overall, while Bichette, Semien, and Lindor are all have down years by their standards. Jared Young, A.J. Ewing, Luis Robert Jr., and Brett Baty are also in the regular mix, with Christopher Morel, Luis Torrens, Eric Wagaman, and Cristian Pache rounding things out. As a team, the M

Patriots Veteran Emerges As Potential Surprise Cut Candidate originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Chad Muma appeared to be closing in on a prominent role in the New England Patriots defense earlier this summer. Now, the veteran linebacker might be fighting for his roster spot.
Muma entered training camp as the apparent favorite to become New England's third off-ball linebacker behind Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss. He regularly wore the green-dot communication helmet during spring practices and continued seeing important defensive snaps when camp began.
The competition has changed considerably following two preseason games.
A new 53-man roster projection from Pats Pulpit predicts that New England will release Muma while retaining K.J. Britt and rookies Khalil Jacobs and Namdi Obiazor. It is only a projection, but Muma's rapid slide from presumed top backup to possible roster casualty has become one of the Patriots' more surprising late-summer developments.

Anna Faris has opened up about the difficult conversations she has with her 14-year-old son, Jack — whom she shares with her ex, Chris Pratt — about religion.
Jurassic World star Pratt, 47, is among the few Hollywood A-listers who have spoken openly about their Christian faith. He and Faris, 49, married in 2009 and welcomed Jack in 2012 before divorcing in 2017.
"[Jack] is religious. I didn't grow up with religion. He's asked me to accept Jesus Christ [as my savior]," Faris said of her son on Chelsea Handler's Dear Chelsea podcast this week.
"And I told him I would do anything for him, including this, but it's going to take a whole lot of long conversations."
Faris described Jack as "solid as a tugboat emotionally" and "doesn't get easily jarred," which means she is able to "challenge him."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said Sunday night that rookie linebacker Bud Clark will miss months with a broken right ankle, while offensive lineman Mason Richman suffered his own "long-term injury" in the Seahawks' preseason loss to Tennessee.
"Two guys that we love, that play our style of ball, that are our type of guys," Macdonald said of Richman and Clark. "Teammates love 'em, great teammates, great guys, great football players. They have great futures. It's a heartbreaker, honestly. We've had three heartbreakers this week, which is tough."
Seahawks wide receiver Jake Bobo was carted off the field Friday from Seattle's joint practice with the ******* ans and was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Richman went down on the opening drive and was helped to the sideline after getting his right leg checked while laying down on the field. Macdonald said they have to figure out what the specific issue is, but he called it a "major injury, a long-term injury."
On Seattle's first defensive play, Clark broke his right ankle and Macdonald said he'll miss months. Trainers put his leg in an air cast, and players from both teams came up to the rookie before he was carted off the field. Clark was Seattle's second-round pick and 64th overall out of Texas Christian.

It turns out San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey's injury was much ado about nothing. Instead, his prolonged absence was part of a plan.
McCaffrey missed the last couple of weeks and both preseason games with what the team labeled as "tightness." The vagueness and unwillingness to specify where the running back was having an issue led to some consternation that perhaps the problem was bigger than the team was letting on.
It turns out is was not a problem at all.
ESPN's Nick Wagoner on Sunday asked McCaffrey about the All-Pro's absence after McCaffrey returned to practice. McCaffrey said this was all part of the plan going into camp.
"Obviously when you don't practice, the way the media works now it's a firestorm," McCaffrey said via Wagoner. "But this was kind of part of the plan from the jump was to ramp up pretty big, get nine, 10 practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp back up so we're fresh for the duration. Our staff's done a great job of coming up with specific plans. And again, I feel great. I feel fresh, and it's good to be back out there."

SAN MARINO (AP) — Pope Leo XIV used a visit to the tiny landlocked San Marino and a major Catholic gathering in the Italian city of Rimini on Saturday to issue one of his strongest appeals yet against war, polarization and social division, urging believers to foster dialogue and friendship in a fractured world.
Speaking to tens of thousands in Rimini, Leo warned against a culture that "rearms minds, words and nations" and argued that Christians must respond with mercy, encounter and a commitment to peace.
He also delivered a message of encouragement to young Catholics, telling them they are "a sign that the future is promising, and not a threat!"
Earlier, in San Marino, Leo addressed local authorities of the world's oldest surviving republic and reflected on the legacy of Saints Marino and Leone, whom he credited with helping create a society rooted in freedom, mutual respect and community.
The pope said the two saints translated the Christian message into "a new community and political model, strongly characterized by the Christian principles of freedom, mutual respect and communion" — a legacy that he said continues to shape the republic today.

The Atlanta Falcons may not be all that talented compared to the competition, at least if we're going by the new positional rankings from ESPN which have them placed 30th at quarterback and just 26th overall.
Where the Falcons are best they are truly special, though.
The latest evidence here is the top-25 players under 25 years old from Mike Jones at The Athletic, where two Atlanta stars made the cut and another earned an honorable mention.
Naturally, superstar running back Bijan Robinson ranked highest, coming in at No. 9 on his list, one spot below Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua and one ahead of Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner.
"One of the best all-around weapons in the league, Robinson last season topped the 1,400-yard rushing mark for the second straight year, and he added 820 receiving yards on 79 catches. Robinson edged out Christian McCaffrey in all-purpose yards (2,298 to 2,126) to lead all offensive players."

Portugal have found a rather unexpected way to avenge their FIFA World Cup heartbreak against Spain.

Just over a month after Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by their neighbours, Portugal got one back — not on a football pitch, but on a cricket field.

Portugal defeated Spain by 57 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub Regional Qualifier C in 2026, ending Spain's campaign and keeping their own dream of reaching the 2028 T20 World Cup alive.

The football defeat had come in July, when Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, USA. Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal in stoppage time of regulation time, sending Ronaldo's Portugal out of the tournament.

This time, though, it was Portugal celebrating at Spain's expense.
Led by former Australia international Moises Henriques, Portugal produced a composed performance to claim the crucial qualifying victory.

Spain captain Christian Munoz-Mills won the toss and chose to field, but Portugal built a competitive total of 160/6.

Dhavalkumar Norotam made 23 and Christopher De Freitas scored 39 as Portugal made a steady start without quite managing to dominate the Spanish attack. Henriques, meanwhile, contributed 18 but could not convert his start into a substantial innings.

Portugal accelerated late in the innings through Craig Cachopa, who struck 25 off 21 ****** , while Carlos Nunes added 15 off nine. Jeremy Martins provided an important final push with an unbeaten 18 off just eight deliveries.

Yasir Ali and Lorne Burns were Spain's best bowlers, taking two wickets apiece.

Spain's chase initially threatened to become interesting, but Portugal's bowlers quickly put the brakes on the pursuit.

Sebastian de Oliveira made the breakthrough early, while Martins also chipped in as Portugal reduced Spain to 32/3. Yasir Ali and Daniel Doyle Calle then began rebuilding the innings and gave Spain hope of mounting a serious chase.
Siraj Ullah Khadem changed the complexion of the contest in the 11th over when he bowled Yasir for 29.

With the pitch making life difficult for incoming batters, Portugal steadily tightened their grip. Khadem finished with impressive figures of 2/19, while Edward Fleming delivered the decisive blow with a three-wicket haul for just 13 runs.

Spain's promising chase soon turned into a procession, and Martins completed the job by bowling Lorne Burns as Portugal wrapped up a 57-run victory.

The triumph sends Portugal into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in 2027, putting them one step closer to a place in the global qualifying tournament for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Portugal join Jersey and Denmark in the Europe Qualifier, while Scotland enter directly because of the exceptional circumstances surrounding their participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Italy and the Netherlands, meanwhile, advance directly to the Global Qualifier.

Rafael Leao will not be part of the Milan squad for their opening Serie A match of the season away against Torino at 19.45 BST on Sunday evening as Ruben Amorim gets his tenure as Rossoneri head coach underway.
Milan are looking to bounce back after a bitterly disappointing end to the 2025-26 campaign, which saw them finish outside of the Serie A top four despite spending much of the season in second place. Aside from their new players, the club also has a new head coach and an entire new senior management team after parting ways with Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare, Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani the day after the 2025-26 season ended.
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – AUGUST 08: Head coach Ruben Amorim of AC Milan looks on during the pre-season friendly between Chelsea FC and AC Milan at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on August 08, 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia. (Photo by Peksi Cahyo/Getty Images)
The headline, club-record signing Goncalo Ramos is expected to lead the Rossoneri attack in Turin on Sunday evening, as is Mario Gila at centre-back, but this is likely to be one too soon for Diego Moreira.
Amorim confirmed on Saturday that Leao will not be part of the travelling squad, insisting that it is due to injury rather than transfer business, and with Christian Pulisic not yet back to full match fitness, there could be a starting opportunity for 19-year-old Alphadjo Cisse in attack.

Patriots Legends Has Positive Reason for Christian Gonzalez Not Having Contract originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's almost impossible to tell why the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez haven't agreed on a new contract.
The idea that Gonzalez and the Patriots aren't going to get something done is scary to consider, and the longer it drags on, the more questions will pop up.
The Patriots have to get something done soon if they want to feel confident about him staying long-term, though it remains uncertain when that will happen. Recently, Devin McCourty said a lot about the situation and why it might not be finalized yet.
"My guess would be language. I have to imagine that the Pats knew kind of where they were going to be at in average per year and new money. A lot of time with these deals, it's the language," McCourty said, H/T FanSided.

MINERAL RIDGE, Ohio (WKBN) – Proving that the program's standard of excellence is built to last, McDonald flexed their muscles in a commanding season-opening 44-0 victory over Valley Christian.
For a program that rewrote the history books as a state semifinalist last season, Saturday's showcase was a terrifying reminder to opponents of McDonald's depth and explosive talent.
By routing the Eagles, the Blue Devils successfully extended their active regular season winning streak to 12 consecutive games, safely carrying the torch passed on by last year's historic senior class.
McDonald moved the ball quickly on their opening possession. Preston VanMeter (9 yards) and Dom Sampson (11) started the drive with two big running plays to gain early yardage.

As long as injuries pile up for the San Francisco 49ers, it'll continue to be a talking point of the season.
Of course, not all injuries are the same. And being injured is not the same as being hurt. Guys play hurt all the time, while typically it's injured players who sit out. The Niners have a mix of both.
The injury report grew after practice on Saturday, Aug. 22 with multiple dings and injuries.
Wideout option Christian Kirk (calf) is questionable as he continued to work on a side field at Saturday's practice, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports. Linebacker Nick Martin (hamstring) is questionable after he didn't participate in practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling is questionable and considered day-to-day due to a shoulder injury, according to Maiocco.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two practice sessions are in the books on the streets of the nation's capital.
But who will take pole position for the IndyCar Freedom 250?
Kyle Kirkwood topped the timing sheets during the first practice session, ahead of Alex Palou, the driver he is chasing in the IndyCar standings. But it was Palou who led the way in the second session, just 0.0766 seconds ahead of Kirkwood.
Scott Dixon and the Arrow McLaren pair of Nolan Siegel and Pato O'Ward rounded out the top five from the second practice session. Their Arrow McLaren teammate Christian Lundgaard posted the sixth-fastest time.
Speaking with the media, including SB Nation, following the first practice session Palou talked at length about the 1.7-mile track that winds around the National Mall, with landmarks such as the Washington Monument and the United States Capitol Building helping to round out the backdrop.

Young Kids in Motion Academy announced Aug. 22 that it is canceling the remainder of its high school football season one week into the 2026 campaign.
The cancellation, announced on Instagram, came fewer than 24 hours after a double shooting near the site of YKIM's Aug. 21 football season opener against Joshua Christian at The Legends Center and Gymnasium on Jacksonville's Northside.
That incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said, left a 19-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the leg and a 20-year-old man with a wound to the shoulder. Both were hospitalized in stable condition. Police were seeking two men in connection to the shooting.
The school did not, however, specify that the cancellation resulted from the shooting, attributing the decision to "unforeseen circumstances beyond our control."

Since the day he was drafted in 2024, the leaders of the Green Bay Packers have maintained that running back MarShawn Lloyd could be a dynamic weapon as a receiver in the passing game.
It took far longer than expected, but the Packers finally caught a glimpse of Lloyd's immense potential as a pass-catcher during Friday night's preseason win over the Denver Broncos.
Lloyd, who hadn't scored a touchdown in a live game since November of 2023 while at USC, capped off the Packers' opening drive with an 11-yard touchdown catch.
On 3rd-and-3 from inside the red zone, Lloyd ran a choice route from the backfield -- catching the defender flat-footed and leaning outside before he cut back inside and created an easy pitch-and-catch with Jordan Love for the touchdown. The linebacker in coverage had no chance to recover once Lloyd put his foot in the ground and displayed his dynamic quickness.
Against man coverage, running backs often face linebackers 1-on-1. Advantage, Lloyd. Against zone, passes to running backs can provide easy completions and opportunities for playmakers to break a tackle and create an explosive play. In an offense with field-stretching speed (Christian Watson, Matthew Golden), Lloyd could have a path to becoming a weapon on checkdowns and manufactured touches, not unlike Tucker Kraft.

Yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers became the first team to reach 80 wins with a 2-1 series-opening victory over the Braves and ace Chris Sale.
Things will get a little easier — although not quite easy — against Atlanta's starting pitcher for today's game, Martín Pérez. The 35-year-old Pérez doesn't throw hard (89.3 mph average fastball velocity this year), but he's hung around in the majors since 2012 thanks to his ability to limit barrels and induce ground ******* . He's having the second-best season of his career, with a 3.15 ERA and 133 ERA+, although — as you might expect from someone with that profile — his 4.14 FIP is quite a bit worse.
On the mound for Milwaukee will be rookie right-hander Logan Henderson, who has a 2.44 ERA through 17 career starts with the Brewers. Henderson has missed some time due to injury in each of the last couple of seasons, but when healthy, he's been a revelation. He's made 12 starts this year, pitching to a 2.70 ERA and an even-more-impressive 0.87 WHIP.
Before we get into today's lineup, I wanted to share some news for those of you who haven't seen it. When right-hander Brandon Woodruff left Milwaukee in late July, his plan was to undergo shoulder surgery, but his shoulder has reportedly shown remarkably unexpected healing, and his surgeon, Dr. Keith Meister, is no longer recommending surgery. Given the way Woodruff's season has gone, it's hard to fault anyone for not getting too optimistic just yet, but you never know. Even seeing him pitch out of the bullpen before the end of the year would be an unexpected — but pretty great — way for his season to end.
As for the lineup, no massive surprises today. Leading off will be Jackson Chourio, followed by Brice Turang and William Contreras, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI yesterday in a game the Brewers won by one run. Behind Contreras are Jake Bauers, the team leader in home runs with 22, and Andrew Vaughn, starting at first base with Bauers in right field. Rounding out the lineup are designated hitter Christian Yelich, third baseman Joey Ortiz, center fielder Luis Lara, and shortstop Cooper Pratt.
