Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers had a strong scouting presence at the Texas vs. Texas State matchup on Saturday. Green Bay's general manager got a first-hand look at the Longhorns dismantling the Bobcats 59-7.
The Longhorns will likely have four players get drafted in the first round in the 2027 NFL Draft and they'll have plenty of prospects who could be on Green Bay's radar on Day 2 and 3 of the draft.
Let's dive into some of the Longhorn prospects who stood out during their season-opening victory on Saturday.
If the Packers take a Longhorn prospect in the Top 150 of the upcoming draft, the leader in the clubhouse is Hero Kanu. Kanu flashed his quickness and power and finished the day with 1.5 tackles for loss. He's going to be a problem for teams all season.
Fellow defensive tackle Ian Geffrard was impressive in his Longhorns debut. The Arkansas transfer was a hoss recording three run stops.

Texas State football head coach GJ Kinne didn't hold back much after Saturday's 59-7 loss to Texas.
Sure, the Longhorns' talent was glaring. They tore through the Bobcats' defense, while their punter never left the sideline. Texas State's offense showed some signs of life against a front seven that features a couple of future NFL players. But Kinne said the mental mishaps frustrated him more than anything else.
"I can deal with physically getting beat," Kinne said. "But when you're playing someone like Texas Week 1 on the road, every time you make a (mental) mistake like that, they're going to make you pay for it."
Texas State can't afford to be as sloppy next week. It hosts UTSA in a rivalry matchup that could be a tipping point for both teams' 2026 season. Here are some takeaways from Texas State's loss:

On Saturday, Arch Manning opened the Texas football season on a positive note.
Manning completed 74.1% of his passes while throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-7 win over Texas State. The senior's 305 yards were the most for a Texas quarterback in a season opener since Sam Ehlinger's 426-yard, five-touchdown outburst against UTEP in 2020.
Manning was intercepted once. He also took one sack.

What did Texas football get out of Saturday's 59-7 win over Texas State, a not-too-competitive season opener at Royal-Memorial Stadium that came down either to the Bobcats being literally out of their league or the Longhorns ready to take the country by storm. (More on that next week, though.)
Actually, the No. 5 Longhorns got quite a lot out of Saturday:
• Arch Manning was efficient and productive, threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, completed 74% of his passes and led Texas to touchdowns on six of his seven drives on the day. He gave way to KJ Lacey (6 of 7 for 55 yards) in the third quarter. Manning looked good on deep ******* , too.
• The Horns got some big plays from both of their new running backs, including a 45-yard run and a receiving TD by Hollywood Smothers and 13- and 21-yard TD runs from Raleek Brown.
• Texas' drives went TD, TD, TD, INT, TD, TD, TD, FG and TD on the day. The Horns scored on a defensive TD in there, too.

Texas football had its first scoop-and-score of the season.
With just over 6 minutes left in the second quarter, Texas State running back Taji Atkins took a carry up the middle. But Rasheem Biles punched the ball out of Atkins hands and Graceson Littleton scooped up the ball to the house for a 59-yard touchdown to push the score to it 28-0 Texas.
On the next drive, the Bobcats avoided the shutout with a touchdown drive against the Longhorns to make it 28-7 with about 4 minutes left until halftime.
Arch Manning then led the Longhorns on a long drive to give UT a chance to extend its lead, but an interception in the end zone kept the deficit at 21 points.

AUSTIN, Texas — A season with high expectations gets under way for the No. 5 Texas Longhorns on Saturday against the Texas State Bobcats at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in a prelude to the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes coming to the Forty Acres next week.
After Texas State received the opening kickoff, a touchback deep into the end zone, Texas gave up a first down on three short completions, but inflicted a tackle for loss on a second-down running play and got pressure on Bobcats quarterback Brad Jackson to force a throwaway on third down under pressure from fifth-year defensive tackle Hero Kanu.
A bad snap to the Texas State punter impacted his rhythm, leading to a shank out of bounds only 17 yards past the line of scrimmage, affording Texas favorable field position at its own 44-yard line.
Lined up in 12 personnel, the first touch went to senior running back Hollywood Smothers, who bounced the run outside behind blocks from sophomore tight end Nick Townsend and junior wide receiver Ryan Wingo, made two defenders miss in the open field, and got down the sideline for a 45-yard gain.
Two plays later, on 3rd and 5, junior wide receiver Cam Coleman beat an attempt to jam him at the line of scrimmage and left the Texas State cornerback falling to the ground on an easy six-yard touchdown catch, his first touch for the Longhorns.

Texas State football begins its 2026 season Saturday, visiting Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium to take on the Texas Longhorns.
The Bobcats are heavy underdogs in their second-ever matchup against the burnt orange. Texas has one of the nation's most talented rosters led by quarterback Arch Manning, a potential Heisman Trophy candidate who could be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
MORE: What the Pac-12 learned from past failures
Texas State has some firepower of its own. Starting quarterback Brad Jackson enters his second year starting under head coach GJ Kinne with two top wide receivers flanking him: Chris Dawn Jr. and Beau Sparks. The Longhorns paid proper respect to their opponent throughout the week; head coach Steve Sarkisian even called the Bobcats a potential College Football Playoff candidate.
Sarkisian's offense will be a difficult test for Texas State defensive coordinator Will Windham to solve. The Bobcats are fielding a new scheme and have to go toe-to-toe with one of the best offensive play-callers in the nation.

Texas football opens its season with a rare meeting against Hill Country neighbor Texas State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Royal-Memorial Stadium.
The No. 5 Longhorns boast one of the most impressive rosters in college football. Arch Manning returns as one of the country's best and most ballyhooed quarterbacks, and Texasopened its thick wallet in the transfer portal to bolster holes on the offensive line and sign star playmakers such as receiver Cam Coleman and running backs Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers.
Sixth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian also overhauled the defense by firing defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and bringing in the fiery Will Muschamp, who has been dissecting SEC defenses for 25 years.
Texas State, which hasn't played Texas since a 36-0 loss in 1930, is making a jump up to the Pac-12, albeit a watered-down version of the legendary West Coast-based league following several years of conference realignment.

Texas football is a heavy favorite in its opening week game against Texas State. So much so that some fans are already looking forward to the marquee Week 2 matchup against Ohio State.
UT coach Steve Sarkisian isn't getting ahead of himself. He acknowledged Wednesday on the Southeastern Conference coaches' call that the Bobcats are not a typical mid-major opponent, dropping a bold statement ahead of Saturday's contest.
PAC-12 REVIVAL: How historic conference's failures informed its future
"Don't be surprised at the end of November if they're not in the talk of making the College Football Playoff," Sarkisian said. "I think Texas State's a really good team. So they've got our attention, they've got our players' attention and that's where our focus is."

AUSTIN - Steve Sarkisian begins his sixth season as Texas head football coach Saturday.
And his most important.
The 2026 season, which begins with an intriguing game against a vastly improved Texas State team, shapes up as a critical referendum on the Longhorn coach's reputation. Not his job status, but his image, if you will.
But let's be clear.
It's not a make-or-break year. Not anywhere that serious although many think if Texas doesn't break through and at a minimum reach the national ****** le game Jan. 25 in Las Vegas this season, then when? It's a fair point with his loaded roster.

It's here — following the non-contact injury sustained by Texas Longhorns senior left tackle Trevor Goosby on Aug. 17, the preseason All-American has achieved the best-case scenario in his recovery after head coach Steve Sarkisian declared Goosby "good to go" for Saturday's season opener in Austin against the Texas State Bobcats.
In returning from the bone bruise to his knee, Goosby practiced for the first time on Monday and continued to ramp up his participation throughout the week.
"It was about him getting back out to practice. I thought he had a really good practice on Monday. We increased his workload on Tuesday. He had a really good practice Tuesday, came back good. We increased his workload Wednesday, he looked good again. We increased his workload even more today, looked good again. So he's kind of been building throughout the week," Sarkisian said on Thursday.
From a mental and technical standpoint, the Texas head coach saw what he wanted to see from the 6'7, 325-pounder.
"I thought he's been playing with really good pad level, good physicality. I think that he needs to play football and linemen are really the most important ones that they need that physicality," Sarkisian said.

Former Texas tennis player Sebastian Gorzny made his debut Monday at the U.S. Open and the Longhorn advanced to the second round.
In his first round match against Belgium's Raphael Collignon, Gorzny won 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. They initially began Sunday but due to weather delay, they finished the four-hour match Monday.
Gorzny graduated from UT in the spring and began playing professional tennis. The Californian is ranked 731st in the world and won two matches in the wild card playoff before getting a main draw in the tournament to start it against 38th-ranked Collingnon.
The 22-year-old won a dramatic fourth set to force a fifth when he won on a double fault after five match points.

College football's newest eligibility fight gave Steve Sarkisian a chance to draw a moral line on Monday. Fans immediately started checking the Texas roster.
The Longhorns coach criticized cutting a college player who spent the offseason with the program simply to make room for someone coming directly from an NFL roster. However, the return of veteran Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson made that position an instant target.
"The fact that somebody out there is going to take a player off of an NFL roster and tell somebody who's been doing it for nine months to go kick rocks, that doesn't sit well with me," Sarkisian said on Monday. "I think that's wrong. That, morally, is wrong."
One fan quickly pointed toward Hutson.
"He literally did the exact same thing," the user wrote in anX response.

Steve Sarkisian is all for the SEC's move to stop programs from bringing back professional football players, even if it is a bit hypocritical.
The Texas coach was asked about recent rulings in college sports that have been stopping teams from adding former NFL players to their rosters. The SEC, along with the other power conferences, has since put in a policy that will prohibit schools from rostering players who had signed professional contracts.
"These players on all of our rosters, not just ours, have been working for nine months for this moment on Saturday, which then will lead into the next five to six months," Sarkisian said, via CBS Austin's Bob Ballou. "The fact that somebody out there is going to take a player off of an NFL roster and tell somebody that's been doing it for nine months to go kick rocks, that doesn't sit well with me. I think that's wrong. That morally is wrong."
While it may not be as blatant as what LSU has attempted to do, Texas does have a player on its roster this fall that participated in minicamp with two NFL teams after going undrafted. Offensive lineman Cole Hutson received a state injunction and is practicing with the Longhorns. He's entering his fifth year of eligibility now this fall after previously playing in 48 games for the Longhorns, including making 23 starts.
"Cole's a guy with so much experience, played a lot of football for us," Sarkisian said in July before Hutson was granted his injunction, via ESPN. "He's a guy that unfortunately didn't get drafted. So he puts himself in a bit of a different situation than maybe most guys that got done playing their fourth year in college."

A Monday MRI confirmed the worst fears for Texas volleyball and outside hitter Abby Vander Wal.
Vander Wal, a 6-foot-3 starting outside hitter, tore the ACL in her left knee during Saturday's win over TCU and will likely miss the remainder of the season. She will see an orthopedic surgeon Tuesday for further evaluation and "to determine the next course of action," according to a team official.
During the opening set of Texas volleyball's first match Saturday in the Players Era Showcase against TCU, Vander Wal exited the game when her knee buckled after landing on an attack. The sophomore stayed down until the whistle blew by officials and clutched her left knee before hopping off with the help of training staff.

After a rough start to the season, Texas volleyball (2-2) fell from its No. 2 spot in the preseason poll to No. 9 in Monday's American Volleyball Coaches ******* ociation rankings.
The Longhorns dropped their season opener last week to No. 7 Arizona State and suffered a sweep Sunday at the hands of No. 1 Nebraska. They beat unranked Marquette last week in five sets and swept No. 18 TCU. Texas also lost starting outside hitter Abby Vander Wal to a season-ending knee injury in Saturday's win over TCU, a loss that will alter head coach Jerritt Elliott's schematic plans for the entire season.
Texas makes its home debut Wednesday at Gregory Gymnasium against No. No. 15 USC.

For the Texas football team, this is a game week. Finally.
Last week, however, was a mock week. When it came to its schedule and practices, Texas acted as if a game was happening that weekend. The team even stayed in a hotel Friday and went through its pregame routine Saturday.

The concept of a mock week isn't new, but it may have served a greater purpose for the Longhorns this season. As head coach Steve Sarkisian pointed out Monday as UT prepared for Saturday's opener against Texas State, the Longhorns welcomed nearly 50 newcomers into their program this offseason.

Former Texas Longhorn Jaydon Blue started training camp as the Dallas Cowboys No. 2 running back. But, in a surprise move, Dallas waived the second-year RB in the final cut before the regular season. Many believed Blue would make the Cowboys final 53-man roster.
Blue entered camp as the No. 2 RB behind Javonte Williams. But former Florida Gators RB Malik Davis won the backup job in training camp.
Davis can actually serve as an example for Blue. Dallas signed Davis as an undrafted free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft. The Tampa native has spent the better part of four years on the Cowboys practice squad before stepping up this year.
The Cowboys are making a notable change to their RB depth chart, parting with projected backup Jaydon Blue ahead of the NFL's 53-man roster deadline. https://t.co/epxZj4sXYj
The Cowboys picked Blue with the 149th pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The 5'9, 196-pound back impressed Dallas with his speed. Blue ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine despite a hamstring injury and then a more indicative 4.30 at the Texas Pro Day.

One of the biggest marquee matchups of the women's college volleyball season is already here. No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Texas will face off on Sunday.
Nebraska (3-0) has already been off to a strong start this season, winning the inaugural Spikes Under the Lights tournament in front of 40,000 fans at AT&T Stadium. A ****** le has eluded the Huskers for nearly a decade, and this year will be the program's last chance with their core squad of Harper Murray, Bergen Reilly, Andi Jackson and more.
Despite exiting the NCAA tournament in the regional final last year, Texas is back and looking for a better outcome this season. The Longhorns received a reassuring No. 2 ranking in the AVCA Preseason poll, but that didn't translate to their first match, where they lost to Arizona State 3-1. Texas has bounced back with a pair of victories, including a 3-0 sweep of No. 18 TCU on Saturday.

Texas volleyball continues its season in Las Vegas for the Players Era Showcase and the Longhorns open their stay Saturday against TCU.
The Horned Frogs haven't started play yet but are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons. They were picked to finish second in the Big 12 behind Arizona State, which beat Texas 3-1 to open its season.

Featuring experience across the floor in seniors Becca Kelly and Lauren Murphy along with junior Evan Hendrix, TCU could challenge Texas (1-1) if UT doesn't start hot. It's an early season test in a "brutal" part of the schedule, especially when Texas has to play No. 1 Nebraska tomorrow.

Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers is moving to another Florida city. The Miami Dolphins have traded the Southlake Carroll product to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round pick.
Ewers was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. The Texas product made three starts during his rookie season, posting a 1-2 record while completing 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
It was expected that Ewers would open the 2026 NFL season as Miami's top backup behind Malik Willis. Instead, the Dolphins will most likely turn to second-year quarterback Cam Miller or undrafted rookie Mark Gronowski.
Ewers will now battle Nick Mullens to be the primary backup behind Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. The Jags have reportedly been "quietly" calling around on backup quarterbacks, not happy with the shaky play of Lawrence's backups this preseason.
The Dolphins weren't happy with Ewers development either according to Dolphins Wire.

Four award-winning sports columnists from Hearst's Texas news outlets - the Austin American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Dallas Morning News - tackle these questions and more.
Here's what they had to say about the 2026 season:

ESPN has projected a notable landing spot for Arch Manning in its early look at the 2027 NFL Draft, sending the highly regarded quarterback to the Arizona Cardinals. The prediction comes well before draft season begins, but it adds an intriguing possibility to the growing conversation surrounding the next potential franchise quarterback.
The Cardinals could become an appealing destination if the team enters the 2027 offseason searching for a long-term answer at quarterback. Manning's combination of pedigree, physical tools and high-profile college career has already placed him among the players expected to generate significant attention when he eventually becomes eligible for the draft.

Arizona's potential interest would also depend heavily on how its current roster develops over the next year. Quarterback performance, team success and draft positioning could all influence whether the Cardinals are in position to select Manning or would need to make an aggressive move to acquire a pick near the top of the first round.
The possibility of Manning landing in Arizona also creates an interesting fit from a roster-building perspective. A young quarterback entering an organization with established offensive pieces could have an opportunity to develop within a system designed around his strengths, while the team could build its future around a highly touted passer.
