What does Tennessee football defensive coordinator Jim Knowles want from his unit in the season opener against Furman? It's safe to say his expectations are high.
"I don't want to give up any yards," he said on Sept. 1. Next: "I want to get a shut out."
And finally: "I don't want to give up any first downs."
The No. 18 Vols are a 46.5-point favorite against Furman (1-0) on Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m., SEC Network+) at Neyland Stadium and it will be Knowles' debut at Tennessee after leaving Penn State. It'll be the first chance for Tennessee's defense to prove itself after a disappointing season last year.
Tennessee's margin for error will lessen dramatically after the Paladins. Week 2 will present a much stiffer challenge at Georgia Tech, and just two weeks later No. 4 Texas will come to Neyland Stadium as the first of Tennessee's nine SEC games.

Minnesota United was putting the final touches on a 5-1 win over the Earthquakes on Saturday when the MLS match was interrupted by cuteness.
"Oh, there's a baby on the field," said Apple TV commentator Kyndra de St. Aubin said from PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif.
A toddler had escaped seats along the sideline and wandered onto the field, with a stadium staff member shown picking up the smiling kid and delivering him back to an adult. A woman who grabbed him appeared to say, "I'm so sorry."
With the game in hand during stoppage time, Loons head coach Cameron Knowles wondered what the commotion was and looked away from the game to see what it was.
"Oh, man, it's a little bit too early to get a lifetime ban from a stadium," Knowles joked.

Tennessee Volunteers safety Edrees Farooq is expected to miss the 2026 college football season with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. He was hurt during Friday's practice on Aug. 14. He was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to UT Medical Center for further evaluation.
Tennessee spokesperson Bill Martin told local media that Farooq suffered a lower-body injury. Reporters at practice said the ambulance arrived with its lights on. Farooq was seen sitting up on the cart as he was loaded in. Tennessee continued its seventh preseason practice while it happened.
The 6-foot, 202-pound junior started all 13 games last season. He made 76 tackles, which tied for third on the team. He added two interceptions, three pass breakups and four forced fumbles. Those four forced fumbles tied for second in the SEC and tied for sixth in the FBS.

Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq is out for the 2026 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Aug. 14, UT announced.
"Edrees Farooq suffered a season-ending torn patellar tendon in his right knee at practice on Friday morning," UT said in a statement. "We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process. We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."
Farooq left the practice field in an ambulance and was transported to UT Medical Center. After evaluation, his injury status was updated to season-ending.
It robs the Vols of a returning starter at a critical position in new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' scheme.
Farooq, a 6-foot, 202-pound junior, was a returning starter and projected to retain that position. Knowles had praised him throughout the offseason. Coincidentally, Knowles recognized Farooq as the defender of the day on his X account about two hours before he suffered the injury.

Conestoga Capital Advisors, an ****** et management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The letter reports a positive market shift towards Small Caps, with the Russell 2000 Index achieving its best first half since 1991 and the Russell 2000 Growth Index up 25.7% in Q2, fueled by AI enthusiasm and semiconductor stocks. However, market leadership was uneven, mirroring the Tech Bubble, as high-beta stocks outperformed while high-quality companies lagged, impacting Conestoga's quality-focused strategies. Management expressed confidence in long-term outcomes, noting that speculative leadership won't last as monetary policy tightens and market breadth improves. The firm remains committed to high-quality growth businesses, expecting these to regain favor as leadership broadens. The Conestoga Small Cap Composite returned 14.32% net-of-fees in the second quarter, with 25.71% for the Russell 2000 Growth Index. Narrow Index leadership hurt the relative results, but it also hid Composite improvements. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.

Jim Knowles enters his first season as Tennessee's defensive coordinator in 2026. The Vols will kick off fall training camp on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Knowles met with media ahead of Tennessee's first practice. The first-year defensive coordinator discussed installing his scheme and where he feels his unit stands ahead of practice No. 1 in fall camp.
"It's always a process, but I thought that we made more strides this spring and summer than any of my first year ******* ignments, because I was able to bring in staff who understand the system, really at all levels of the football, so I thought we got a lot done," Knowles said. "We are going to continue to move it forward in camp, but right now, going into camp about 70 percent or so of everything has already been put in. We just need to keep ******* ping that during camp, and I think we have the players who now really understand the system that we can tweak it.
"We haven't been in the game plan yet. I don't game plan against the offense, so it's all just teaching the different concepts and then we can mix and match them - which kind of increases the percentages as we go."
Knowles was Penn State's defensive coordinator in 2025 after serving in the same capacity at Ohio State from 2022-24.

After finishing the college football season 8-5 last year, it's back to the drawing board for the Tennessee Volunteers.
There's plenty of turnover for the Vols entering 2026, including quarterback Joey Aguilar, who was denied a waiver to compete for an additional season.
Nonetheless, Tennessee is sure to be strong on defense at the very least with new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles as the offense looks to find a rhythm with one of its freshman quarterbacks.

Fans from Northeast Ohio had mixed reactions to the news that Akron native LeBron James isn't heading back home.
"I regret that he ain't coming home to Cleveland, but this will always be his hometown," said Fred Slack of Akron.
James agreed on Friday, July 24 to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agency Klutch Sports Group confirmed on social media. James will join the Sixers on a two-year, $8 million contract, which includes a player option, agent Rich Paul told ESPN.
"We got Bron!" said an excited Brandon Knowles, who was manning the 4 Bros & a Sis lemonade stand at the Northeast Regional Firefighter Challenge Classic in downtown Akron.
Knowles isn't from Philadelphia, nor is he a Sixers fan ‒ but he is a LeBron James fan. Wherever James goes, Knowles will follow.

The Kansas City Chiefs would always rather be overprepared than underprepared, and that was the exact approach they took in rebuilding the secondary throughout the offseason.
For example, despite news that veteran nickel corner Kader Kohou was signing in free agency, the Chiefs drafted another nickel specialist in Jadon Canady in round four of the NFL draft. Not to mention they already had nickel options in Kevin Knowles and Christian Roland-Wallace on the roster, plus hybrid safeties like Chamarri Conner and Jaden Hicks who have been known to play in the slot at times.
Add veteran former slot specialist L'Jarius Sneed and veteran cornerback Kaiir Elam to the mix, and you have what could be a very crowded training camp competition for the Chiefs this summer.
With all that in mind, an early signing like Kohou may not be guaranteed a roster spot, according to KC insiders Matt Derrick (Chiefs Digest) and Nick Jacobs (KSHB 41).
During the July 5 episode of the "41 is the Mic" podcast, hosted by Derrick and Jacobs, the former explained why Kohou's 2026 contract may not last into September.

The Tennessee Vols haven't been on many folks' radars this offseason. With plenty of roster turnover and an unsettled quarterback battle, the Vols have the looks of a big question mark for the 2026 season amid what should be a wide open and entertaining SEC.
However, the Vols had quite the makeover on the defensive side of the ball going back to December of last year. Tim Banks was fired, and Jim Knowles was brought down from Penn State. Knowles brought a number of his former Nittany Lions players with him to Knoxville with him, and that included three noteworthy defenders in EDGE Chaz Coleman, LB Amare Campbell, and S Dejuan Lane.
Well, Coleman is gone, as all Tennessee fans know, but Campbell should have a strong impact in the middle this season. And it's in the middle where CBS Sports' Chris Hummer thinks the Vols have the best group in the entire country.
Hummer listed the best group nationally at each position, and the Vols' linebackers got the nod.
The Volunteers have the deepest linebacker unit in the country. For example, Edwin Spillman (81) and Jeremiah Telander (80) led Tennessee in tackles last year and are back in 2026. Yet there's a real chance neither starts due to the presence of Arion Carter — an expected draft pick who returned to school because of injury — and Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, a four-star addition out of the portal who's totaled 179 tackles, 20 TFLs and 9.5 sacks over the past two seasons.

Knowles is a new addition to the Rattlers, transferring from NCAA Division II Albany State after winning back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year awards. The graduate followed Gray to FAMU after spending three seasons together at Albany State, where they captured the SIAC Championship and were named Division II’s Black College Football National Champions in 2025.
Camon has been with FAMU football since the 2024 season. In 2025, he led the team with four sacks and added 19 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss as a redshirt sophomore. Camon initially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal but was convinced by Gray to withdraw.
