Training camp is finally underway, which means dominoes are going to start falling day by day in the quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. Early on, there are not likely to be many nuggets that we get from camp, but head coach Kevin O'Connell did throw the media one bone.
Sports Illustrated's Will Ragatz shared that O'Connell told the media on Tuesday, July 28, that they will be splitting first-team reps in camp early on.
The offense is built to elevate the quarterbacks, even if they are looking for that relationship to be the other way. Both McCarthy and Murray are going to be with the best supporting cast and offensive line they have ever had. It may seem inconventional, but the offense will figure out the starter for the coaching staff by showing them who they work best with, not the other way around.

We gave you our updated power rankings for the NBA's Eastern Conference, where LeBron James formed a superteam on the Philadelphia 76ers, where Kawhi Leonard will presumably join the Toronto Raptors, and where Giannis Antetokounmpo changed uniforms, but what kind of operation would we be if we didn't also give you power rankings for the Western Conference?
So, here they are in all their glory. Perfect and inarguable, as always.
We should note: The East is far deeper than the West for the first time in forever, though the West boasts the league's two ******* le favorites, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
The defending champion New York Knicks and LeBron's Sixers, among other teams in the East, may have something to say about it in the end, but the depth and youth of the talent in OKC and San Antonio is impossible to ignore. Those two rosters are in a stratosphere all to themselves.
It would be surprising if any of the top six teams here failed to earn a guaranteed playoff spot. The Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves form another tier of contenders. Beyond them, it's a ******* shoot, as every team features quality players and only the Sacramento Kings are in real danger of dropping into the draft's relegation zone.

Over the past few seasons, UCLA Bruin fans got to witness Lauren Betts operate in the post. While Betts is best known for her defense or her dominating frame, which left many college opponents feeling defensive, Betts was also a gifted passer.
With Betts' passing ability it shouldn't be too surprising to hear that her favorite player is Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. Jokic is an NBA champion and is a three-time league MVP.
During the WNBA All-Star Weekend, Betts revealed that she was hoping for a surprise from the Nuggets superstar center.
"This is just me manifesting; if Jokic walked in right now, he would give me a big bear hug," Betts said. "He's like the GOAT and I'm from Colorado so I'm a huge Nuggets fan."
Beyond just Jokic's otherworldly ability on the basketball court, Betts is also impressed by his ability to not make the sport his entire life. Jokic is known to enjoy himself a horse race, owning several horses back in Serbia.

Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson were understandably frustrated. According to them, he has done everything he has needed to do this off-season to prepare and get healthy, but when asked about what his message has been to Kyler Gordon, Ben Johnson succinctly said: "Get healthy."
A healthy Kyler goes a long way for this team. But your best ability is availability, so it remains to be seen if he sees out his recently inked contract just a year ago.
Joining Kyler on PUP are TJ Edwards, Elijah Hicks, Keyshaun Elliott, and Montez Sweat, but none of them are expected to be long-term.

Peyton Watson is nearing a big payday after his breakout season. The Denver Nuggets are offering the UCLA product a five-year, $70 million deal, according to The Athletic's Tony Jones.
It's a tricky financial situation for Denver, which recently matched the Oklahoma City Thunder's two-year, $12 million offer sheet for sharpshooter Spencer Jones. The Jones move brought the Nuggets into the second apron, so they'll reportedly have to do some roster shuffling to be able to extend Watson.
If Watson and the Nuggets can't make it work, he'll have plenty of suitors. The only holdup is apparently the Nuggets' asking price. Denver is reportedly requesting two first-round picks in exchange for Watson, who took a massive leap in Year 4 but is still relatively unproven.
Watson averaged 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 41.1% from 3 last season. The 23-year-old has steadily improved each year, becoming a trusted NBA role player after hardly playing as a freshman at UCLA in 2021-22.
The Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly expressed interest in a sign-and-trade for Watson. Los Angeles has long been a rumored destination for the 6-foot-8 guard, as the Clippers are undergoing somewhat of a youth movement following Kawhi Leonard's (likely) departure.

Hoping to add some excitement to their offseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder had their attempts at stealing away talent from a divisional rival fall short. The Denver Nuggets matched their two-year, $12 million offer sheet for Spencer Jones.
In a rare attempt at adding a restricted free agent, the Thunder hoped to add Jones to their vacant roster spot. An opening happened on their standard 15-player roster following their trade to send Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal. With $6.9 million to spend below the second apron, they tried to acquire the 25-year-old.
Jones has spent two seasons with the Nuggets. He went undrafted in the 2024 NBA draft. He went from a two-way player to getting converted to a standard deal in Feb. 2026. He's one of Denver's best finds in recent memory. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds this past season. He shot 39.6% from 3 on 2.3 attempts.
Starting the weekend on the Thunder, Jones ended it back on the Nuggets. They matched his offer sheet with an hour to spare. Denver had 48 hours to make a decision. Afterward, he took to LinkedIn to express his thoughts on a wild two days.
"It's official. I'm staying a Denver Nugget," Jones wrote. "Plot twist. Yes, I signed an offer sheet with Oklahoma City and yes, Denver matched it. I know some people are confused, and some fans are even upset. How could I sign with a rival? I get it. But I also need people to understand something. This is a business. Front offices treat it that way every day and players have to do the same."

Dave Joerger is headed to Denver.
Joerger reached a deal on Monday night to join the Nuggets' coaching staff next season, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Joerger will serve as the lead ******* istant on head coach David Adelman's staff.
Joerger has been an ******* istant in the league for nearly two decades, and he served as the head coach for both the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings. The Grizzlies fired Joerger after three seasons in 2016, though Joerger had sought permission to talk to other teams about job openings during his final campaign. He then joined the Kings the following season, and spent three years there, too. In total, Joerger compiled a 245-247 record as a head coach.
Since his last head job, Joerger has spent time as an ******* istant with both the Philadelphia 76ers and most recently the Milwaukee Bucks.
Joerger will now get to join the Nuggets as Adelman enters his second full season at the helm. The Nuggets went 54-28 last season, but were knocked out in the opening round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team has had a busy offseason already, including waiving center Jonas Valančiūnas and matching an offer to retain Spencer Jones. Lauren Gardner's run in Secaucus is over.
The MLB and NHL Network host announced on social media Friday that she and her husband, Patrick, had decided to return to Colorado to be closer to family as they begin a new chapter together.
"Lauren's been a fantastic colleague and friend to us all throughout her eight years here in Secaucus," the networks said, confirming her departure in a joint statement to Awful Announcing. "We thank her for the wonderful contributions she's given across our platforms and projects, and we wish her nothing but the absolute best as she heads back home to Colorado."
Gardner first arrived in Secaucus in March 2019 for DAZN's baseball coverage, which was co-produced by MLB Network out of its own studios in Secaucus. The move capped a long, unconventional climb chronicled the same month by The Athletic's Ryan S. Clark, who profiled Gardner as she prepared to leave behind the Colorado sports scene for what ended up being seven years in New York/New Jersey.
A Denver native, Gardner had spent that stretch working the Avalanche and Nuggets beats for Altitude Sports, but her path there ran through nearly every odd job the local sports world had to offer. She interned at Mile High Sports Magazine at 19, cheered for the Broncos, spent two years as the on-camera face of the Champ Car racing series, and pieced together a living through sideline reporting for the Colorado Eagles and Mammoth while working day jobs in commercial real estate and condo sales just to keep the broadcasting dream alive. Gardner told Clark the decision to leave for the Tri-state area arrived almost like a premonition, recalling a specific drive down Colorado Boulevard, right where the road crests and the mountains come into view, when she suddenly knew, without any real explanation, that she was about to move east.

INDIANAPOLIS — Ex-Indiana Pacers point guard Ty Lawson, who came to the team in 2016 with court-ordered supervision for multiple drunk driving charges, was arrested again last week — this time for stealing a $34 bottle of **** o's vodka from a liquor store in Colorado, court records allege.
During the arrest July 16 in Douglas County, Col., while being booked into jail, Lawson allegedly verbally **** aulted police, screaming and repeatedly calling an officer (expletive) and “white (expletive),” according to the New York Post, which obtained the probable cause affidavit.
"At times, according to the report, he kicked his cell’s glass wall and yelled 'stop' over and over again," the Post reported. "He also allegedly spit on the floor."
Court records say Lawson eventually “calmed down” and apologized for his actions.
Lawson, 38, played almost his entire NBA career with the Denver Nuggets from 2009 to 2015. In July 2015, he was traded to the Houston Rockets.

A former Denver Nuggets player was arrested for allegedly stealing a bottle of vodka from a store in Castle Rock, according to an arrest affidavit acquired by FOX31. The incident occurred on July 16, around 8:03 p.m., when a shop owner called police about a man who had entered the store and stolen a bottle of ***** o’s vodka before leaving. According to the affidavit, the shop owner told police that she witnessed the man take a drink from the bottle outside of the store before walking to a nearby restaurant, Scileppi’s, where he took the bottle by the fire pit, then sat at the bar with the stolen bottle. The owner advised that the man was possibly drunk, as she said she witnessed him stumbling. When officers arrived, they arrested the man, later identified as Tywon Lawson. Lawson faces a charge of theft less than $300, shoplifting.

Washington Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle has completed his coaching staff with the hiring of 25-year NBA veteran ***** istant coach Charles Klask.
Klask, a graduate of Michigan State in 1999, began his coaching career in the NBA as a video coordinator for the Detroit Pistons in 2000-01 under then-coach Rick Carlisle. He spent the next decade as a scout with the Orlando Magic, working for Doc Rivers and Stan Van Gundy among other notable head coaches for the organization before he advanced into a coaching role.

Jacob Crews is the latest Missouri basketball alum to earn a professional opportunity this summer, as the wing signed to play for Donar Groningen in the Netherlands on Tuesday, according to a news release from the team.
Two Tigers from the 2025-26 team are now set to play overseas, as guard Jayden Stone signed a deal with the Sydney Kings earlier this summer.

Payton Sandfort knows what it feels like when he releases a shot that's on the money.
It's a familiar sensation for the second-year forward, who has cashed in on countless 3-pointers. And that's why he immediately reacted after heaving a game-tying triple in the closing seconds of OKC's Las Vegas Summer League game against Denver on Tuesday.
Sandfort knew the shot was short. And sure enough, it failed to even reach the rim as the final buzzer sounded, sealing the Nuggets' 106-103 win.
Sandfort untucked his jersey in frustration while walking off the floor. It was a disappointing ending for the Thunder, which was determined to avoid falling to 0-6 in Summer League play. So much so that it willed its way back into the game after trailing by 11 points with 4:01 remaining.
A key contributor to the comeback attempt was Sandfort, who scored nine fourth-quarter points to finish with 19. He also added three rebounds, two ****** ists and one block in 26 minutes on 7-for-18 shooting from the field (2 for 8 from deep).

Michael Porter Jr. signed a huge five-year extension with the Denver Nuggets back in 2022, and now, he is entering the final year of that deal. Of course, Porter is now with the Brooklyn Nets, which has now led to people questioning if he will stay with the Nets.
Porter was excellent during the 2025-26 season, cementing himself as a high-level offensive player after averaging 24.2 points per game. Since he is the type of player who can be plugged into any system, the Nets would benefit from extending his contract.
As one of the league's best shooters, Porter can always help a team succeed. That was what he did in Denver as the third option behind Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. It ended up with him being a champion, but it seems he is happy he got the move to Brooklyn.
It is an interesting situation because Porter seems happy in Brooklyn, but he does not have a longer-term contract with the team just yet. General manager Sean Marks seems ready for the challenge to extend him, but the talks have not started.

Down three points with 13 seconds left, Bennett Stirtz quickly went up for the top-of-the-key outside jumper. Clank. It hit the front of the rim. With the ball ricocheting back for a second-chance look, Payton Sandfort's sizzling streak snapped as his outside jumper also fell short at the buzzer.
The Oklahoma City Thunder fell in a 106-103 Summer League loss to the Denver Nuggets. Even at this level, you're guaranteed a banger of a game between these two foes. Still winless in the July extravaganza, it was the most entertaining of the bunch.
The Thunder and Nuggets continued the tradition of most of their game scripts over the last year — all buckets, no defense, fast-paced. Now with a handful of games under his belt, Aday Mara started to play like the Michigan version of himself that helped him end up in the lottery range.
On the other end, it looks like the Nuggets unearthed a second-round gem. Trevon Brazile put up points in a flurry. He showed some flash as he threw down a windmill dunk in transition. He reached double-digit points in a blink of an eye. The Thunder were in a 31-22 deficit after the first quarter.
Eventually, the Thunder fell behind by as many as 13 points. It looked like Denver's fast pace was too much for OKC to keep up with. That said, it didn't really matter. Mara kept trying creative passes. He turned into an offensive hub. Finally, we saw what his ideal role would look like at the NBA level.

The LeBron James free agency saga continues, and it is anyone's guess which team he will sign with in free agency or even when he will officially make a decision.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves are considered the biggest contenders for James' services. A strong argument could be made that James' best chance of winning his fifth NBA championship would come with the 76ers.
The 76ers recently traded for five-time All-Star wing Jaylen Brown, and they should be legitimate contenders even without James. According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, Philly's three main stars, have all talked to James.
"As LeBron James' free agency decision extends into its second week, the Philadelphia 76ers have kept up their pursuit of the four-time NBA champion through three of their players, league sources told ESPN.
"Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown have all been in communication with James, sources told ESPN on Tuesday, with Maxey leading the charge."

Fox broadcasters Joe Davis and John Smoltz interviewed National League manager Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and American League manager John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays during the seventh inning of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game broadcast.
During Reds first-time All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year candidate Sal Stewart's plate appearance in that inning, which resulted in a walk, Roberts offered praise of Stewart with an anecdote he shared during the broadcast.
"He came into my office … and he said, 'Hey, I'd love to take five, 10, 15 minutes and tell me anything, give me something,'" Roberts said. "And we talked for like 20 minutes about what it means to be a competitor, about winning pitches, and about getting people around you that (help you) to play the game the right way and what standard you set. The basketball world is still waiting for LeBron James to decide which team he will call home for the 2026-27 NBA season. He informed the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 that he was leaving them in free agency, and there are several teams that are in the running for him.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers are thought by many to be the frontrunners for the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer, and the Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves are also thought to have a chance. Some think that James has pretty much already decided to go back to the Cavaliers and that it is only a matter of time before a decision is made public.
Chris Haynes, an NBA reporter, said on Monday that the superstar "has all the information needed" and is "in deliberation phase" right now.
"I've talked to LeBron James' agent Rich Paul, and he said LeBron James has all the information needed. So now it's all up to LeBron James to make a decision. As of right now he's in deliberation phase. ... The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, they're in the mix along with Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers."
Some think that James may be waiting for the World Cup to end before he makes an announcement so that he can get a sizable share of the media attention. The final game of the World Cup will take place this Saturday, July 19.

The Nuggets, mind you, still have two restricted free agents of their own to hash out deals with: Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones. And some fresh rumbles have been relayed to The Stein Line that the Bucks are joining the Clippers and Hawks on the list of teams trying to pry Watson away from the Nuggets via sign-and-trade.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently looking at Jonathan ***** inga as the top forward option in free agency. Unfortunately for the Lakers, ***** inga is requesting more money than they can afford or are looking to invest in him. One noteworthy name has emerged as a true “backup plan” for potentially missing out on ***** inga via the free agent market at an affordable price.
Former Denver Nuggets champion role player Bruce Brown has emerged as the top backup plan for the Lakers. Sports illustrated’s Ryan Ward reported the following about the Lakers current plan:
“There’s mutual interest between ***** inga and the Lakers, and the Hawks are open to a deal, but ***** inga’s contract demands could be a problem that ends Los Angeles’ pursuit. Bruce Brown isn’t a bad option. He doesn’t bring the size that ***** inga or [Robert Williams] do, but Brown has championship experience, along with being a decent rebounder and defender, and can be another reliable ball handler off the bench.”
Brown only becomes a priority to the Lakers in free agency if they officially give up on the chase to acquire ***** inga. The current free agent market sees Brown without a clear path. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka may be able to acquire Brown at a minimum contract to make him a better value than ***** inga.
The Lakers are still hoping to acquire ***** inga as the biggest forward on the free agent market and for the highest upside of all available names. ***** inga will have to work out a sign and trade with the Atlanta Hawks or let his former team completely renounce him once the Lakers make an offer in this scenario
