American tennis star Coco Gauff weighed in on the WTA's new **** testing requirement for players, saying she understands the desire to create fair competition while also expressing her support for the transgender community.
Gauff, the world No. 4-ranked singles player is competing in the National Bank Open in Toronto, a 13-day tournament that started last week. She answered a question about the policy after her second-round win against fellow American Kayla Day on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
"I understand the reasoning behind it and I do think this kind of conversation has created a lot of animosity towards the trans community, which I'm not really a big fan of, but I also understand the, I guess, biological difference and the need to protect that and preserve that," Gauff said. "So I think it's a conversation that is very nuanced and I need to have a nuanced answer. So yes, I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women's sports, but also do not like the attack that it is creating (by) people who don't really care but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community.
"I don't really know how to answer this question in a way that people aren't gonna spin it. But as far as where I stand, I definitely support the trans community but I also support the need of creating fairness in sport, too."
The WTA changed its gender eligibility policy July 21, requiring all players take a one-time SRY gene test. The test, done by blood sample or cheek swab, checks for the presence of a gene found on the Y chromosome and **** ociated with typical male **** development. If a player tests positive, they will be ineligible to compete unless they can prove to the satisfaction of the WTA medical personnel that they have Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome or another developmental **** disorder.

TORONTO (AP) — Coco Gauff understands the reasoning behind the WTA Tour's newly introduced gene-testing policy. What the two-time Grand Slam champion doesn't favor is how politicized the discussion becomes in generating what Gauff called, "animosity towards the trans community."
To her, the topic requires a more nuanced conversation, which is why Gauff provided what she called a nuanced answer, in speaking to reporters at the Canadian Open in Toronto following her opening-match win over Kayla Day on Wednesday.
"So, yes, I guess I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women's sports. But I also do not like the attack that it is creating," Gauff said. "People who don't really care, but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community — so I'm not really a big fan of that either."
Her comments come in response to the Women's Tennis ******* ociation last month introducing one-off mandatory gene-testing for all players as a requirement to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Players are being tested for the SRY gene, a segment of DNA typically found on the Y chromosome that initiates male ******* development in utero and indicates the presence of testes.

Australian Open champion Rybakina of Kazakhstan began her hardcourt run ahead of the US Open by outlasting Australian Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 after two hours and 33 minutes.
World number two Rybakina began the match by hitting six consecutive winners and finished with 58 winners, 15 of them acers, and 58 unforced errors, 16 of them double faults.
Rybakina hit back-to-back double faults to drop the second set and three double faults while serving for the match before advancing to next face 28th-seeded American Ann Li, who eliminated Canadian wildcard Kayla Cross 7-6 (7/2), 6-3.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Caitlin Clark had 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 **** ists for her fourth career triple-double, and the Indiana Fever won their their fifth straight with a 112-98 victory over the Portland Fire on Friday night.
Kelsey Mitchell also had 26 points for the Fever (19-10), who have won nine of their last 11 and had five straight games with 100 points.
Bridget Carleton had 26 points for the Fire (11-18), who have lost four straight.
The Fever pulled away in the third quarter, going up by 18 points to lead 90-72 heading into the fourth quarter. Makayla Timpson hit a layup that pushed the lead to 10 points to open the fourth.
Portland closed the gap, pulling to 98-88 on Carleton's 3-pointer with 4:08 left. She had a layup that made it 100-93 to get the Fire even closer. Clark hit free throws to make it 110-96 with just a minute to go and the Fire ran out of time.

Boston was moving to the lane to receive a Caitlin Clark pass when she tripped over Flau'jae Johnson's foot. She appeared to land directly on her right knee and immediately grabbed at it in pain.
Players from both teams quickly surrounded Boston as the team trainer rushed out to check on her. She was helped off the floor and taken directly to the locker room.

Miles shot 9 for 17 with four 3-pointers for Minnesota (23-6), which owns the best record in the WNBA. She added eight ***** ists and six rebounds.
Kayla McBride scored 18 with four 3-pointers for the Lynx, who were 14 for 25 (56%) from distance. Napheesa Collier had 15 points and Natasha Howard scored 13. Reserve Antonia Delaere scored 12 on 4-for-5 shooting from distance.

Now that the Denver Broncos are reporting for training camp, fans will likely get a more inside looks at the team's new training facility. While some introductory pictures were released by the team in mid-July, the first interior video of the facility has been shared on Instagram by Kayla Jones, wife of Broncos defensive lineman D.J. Jones.
The video captured several never-before-seen areas of the new building. Some of the new areas shown include an in-house barbershop (complete with an orange and blue striped barber chair), a mini indoor field, shaded table seating on the roof of the building, and a revamped locker room ready for the team.

The $175 million facility, and all its bells and whistles, is a visible sign of the past two seasons of work. The facility was first announced in November 2023 and broke ground in late August 2024. The state-of-the-art campus was funded completely by the Walton-Penner ownership group, and is 30 percent bigger than their old headquarters building, according to the team's website.
The building also is a reminder of the Walton-Penner ownership group's commitment to making the team one of the best in the NFL, both on and off the field. The next big investment in the club will be the team's new stadium, on track to be built at the team's preferred site at Denver's historic Burnham Yard. While finalized plans have not been announced quite yet, the team is committing significant time and energy into the beautification of the area, and community inclusivity. You can see all the updates on the team's stadium website. The biggest remaining hurdle will be the relocation of Denver Water, which is located at Burnham Yard.

Sha'Carri Richardson is once again a national champion.
Richardson won the women's 100 at the 2026 USA Track and Field Championships on Friday, July 24.
Richardson crossed the finish line with a time of 10.77 to win. Her time equaled a season best. Kayla White ran a 10.90 to place second and Tamari Davis posted an 11.00 to take third.
Running out of lane five, Richardson got a decent start. She pulled even with the field around 40 meters, surged passed the other sprinters and crossed the finish line with a comfortable victory.
"It feels phenomenal to be back in a better place. Healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally," Richardson told NBC Sports after the race. "It shows that hard work pays off."

The Indiana Fever star was not among the participants the league announced Tuesday, July 21 for Friday's contest at All-Star weekend in Chicago. Clark declined her invitation, USA TODAY first reported. No reason was given.

The WNBA's 3-point contest field is officially set.
The league announced the six contestants for the 3-point contest on Friday during All-Star weekend on Tuesday afternoon. Bridget Carleton, Azzi Fudd, Natisha Hiedeman, Rhyne Howard, Marina Mabrey and Janelle Salaün are set to compete in the event.
According to USA Today's Meghan L. Hall, Caitlin Clark, Kayla McBride and Sabrina Ionescu were all invited to participate but declined. Specifics there are not known.
Ionescu won the 3-point contest last season, and is one of only two multi-time winners in the event's history.
Mabrey and Howard will enter as the favorites in the 3-point contest after what's been a dominant shooting start to the season. Mabrey has averaged 3.3 made 3-pointers per game with the Toronto Tempo while draining 82 3-pointers as of Tuesday night, both of which lead the league. Howard has made 79 3-pointers this season while draining 3.2 per contest.

The former Wales Under-17s and 19s international is the fourth new arrival of the summer after deals for Lucy Farrell, Mikayla Cook and Natasha Thomas.
Wrexham-born Reidford came through the ranks at Tranmere Rovers before moving to Manchester United, who she captained in the FA Youth Cup final.

Pensacola State College women's basketball will have a new leader on the sidelines next season.
The school announced that Kayla Gordon, who spent the last two seasons as an ******* istant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Mississippi, as the program's next head coach on July 14. She replaces longtime coach Clenita Bedford, who went 180-153 in 12 seasons leading the Pirates. PSC finished 15-14 in 2025-26.
“Kayla’s experience as a highly accomplished student-athlete, professional and coach obviously brings tremendous value. She holds records as a Division I student-athlete and as a professional player, and she has coaching experience in the Southeastern Conference. The resume itself is impressive, but what stood out the most to us was her passion for developing young women,” Pensacola State College Athletic Director Bryan Lewallyn wrote in a press release announcing the hire.
“All the feedback we received kept coming back the same: she invests in and develops young women to be women of integrity and character because that’s who she is. The Lynx were led by Kayla McBride’s 25 points, while Natasha Howard added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Courtney Williams grabbed 12 boards for Minnesota, which improved its record to a WNBA-best 17-6.
Miles, who was sidelined with a calf injury, also tallied 5 rebounds and dished out 4 ***** ists. The rookie sealed the Lynx’s win by swishing four free throws in the final minute of the game. Named an All-Star starter earlier this week, Miles leads the Lynx with an average of 18.7 points and 5.6 ***** ists per game
The Liberty held a 62-58 lead toward the end of the third quarter, but McBride hit a 3-pointer to cut the margin to one point. Jonquel Jones hit a 3 as the fourth quarter began to restore New York’s lead to four points.

Jul. 10—Illinois quarterback Carson Boyd, a Cardinal Ritter (Mo.) product originally from O'Fallon will throw out the first pitch ahead of a 7:15 p.m. start on Friday in the series-opening game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Boyd, Brandon Henderson, Nick Hankins Jr. and Jacob Eberhart — Illinois' St. Louis and Metro East contingent — will also sign autographs starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Ford Plaza in center field.
Illinois Hall of Famer Scott Spiezio, now a Cardinals broadcaster, spent the final two years of his 12-year MLB career in St. Louis and was part of the 2006 World Series team that beat the Detroit Tigers in five games. The former Illini also played with the Athletics, Angels and Mariners in the majors.

Janelle Salaün scored 26 points as the Golden State Valkyries beat Toronto Tempo 83-75 for their sixth straight win, a franchise record and first victory over Toronto.
Golden State led 44-31 with 8:55 left in the third quarter, but Toronto responded with a 15-2 run to take the lead. Julie Allemand's jumper put Toronto ahead, and Maria Conde's 3-pointer boosted their lead. Toronto was ahead 59-57 entering the fourth, and Golden State finished on a 26-16 run to win.
Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase said adversity has become a theme for her team lately.
"Playing through adversity has been the key. The last two games, specifically, we didn't start out really well," Nakase said. "The second unit came to life again, so credit to them for staying ready. That to me is the biggest takeaway right now. We need everybody."

District 10 had another successful softball season, including a deep run by Sharon to the PIAA Class 3A championship game. As a result of another competitive year in District 10, 20 players were named to the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches ****** ociation all-state teams.
Sharon star junior Maddy Vogan was not only named to the first team as a pitcher, she was also named the Class 3A player of the year. She leads a total of eight first-team selections, including teammate Olivia Schneider at shortstop and Corry outfielder Mahra Goodwill in 3A.

McDowell standout first baseman Bella Zaczyk was named to the first team in Class 6A, while Harbor Creek teammates Kayla Bresee (catcher) and Brooklynn ****** lla (outfielder) was named first team in 4A.
