Chanel shoppers are known to be a discerning bunch, but artist Tom Sachs has created an unauthorized replica of the luxury house's sought-after Paris boutique in lower Manhattan.
Located in Sachs' studio at 245 Centre Street, the phony Chanel store has a sign with 31 Rue Cambon on its front door, and a black Chanel-esque ensemble in one street-front window and a red one in the other. During a pass-by Monday night, the studio's security grates were down and a sign on the front door read, "NOTICE BY ENTERING YOU ARE TO BE RECORDED."
Media requests to Sachs were unreturned.
Although Sachs' outpost has a sign with what looks like a handwritten version of Chanel's proprietary interlocked "CC" monogram, the designer label has not been involved in the project in any way. A Chanel spokesperson said Thursday, "Chanel is not involved in this project, and we did not participate in its conception or development. This is not part of the cultural [programs] that Chanel supports around the world and has no affiliation with Chanel."
Scheduled to open Friday and to run through Oct. 10, Sachs' store will have highly limited access — with hours set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The artist's body of work includes jabs at consumerism, materialism, logomania and high-low dressing. His Centre Street studio's new faux Chanel outpost is prismatic in a few ways, including the fact that his ****** e is a short walk to Canal Street where counterfeit goods are sold in abundance.
Sachs' faux boutique coincides with the $20 billion Chanel's accelerating growth and shoppers' fervor for fashion artistic director Matthieu Blazy's designs. Chanel hauls have gone viral, thanks to influencers like Elle Ferguson, who posted in March about traveling 30 hours to get the other Chanel bag of the season — the maxi flap bag in shearling. (She already had scored the mini rectangular bag in gold.) TikTokers like Mikayla Nogueira are sharing their much-coveted loot too with followers.
Asked about the potential impact of Sachs' project on Chanel, Luca Solca, global luxury goods ****** yst at Bernstein, said Thursday, "Imitation is the best form of flattery. This seems to confirm how powerful Chanel has grown into our collective perception."
The New York-based Sachs focuses on recreating modern icons with everyday objects like plywood, including Le Corbusier's 1952 Unite d'Habitation with foam core and a glue gun or variations of NASA's ****** ecraft like the Lunar Module. His unyielding tongue-in-cheek career narrative touches on craftsmanship, luxury and nihilism.
In 1998, his notoriety or fame rose with the creation of a Chanel-type guillotine. Along with Chanel, Sachs has also taken aim at Hermès with his art projects including his 2006 Tiffany Value Meal — a riff on McDonalds' "Happy Meal" in Tiffany & Co's signature blue with what appeared to be the company's logo. Tennessee football legend Peyton Manning awarded four UT freshmen with the latest installment of his namesake scholarship and he was on campus to honor the recipients on Aug. 31.
Hector Centeno-Lopez, Breanna Gonzalez, Olamide Olakunle and Mikayla Schumpert, the 2026 Peyton Manning Scholars, earned their four-year award and a spot in the selective Haslam Leadership Scholarship program through a rigorous selection process that sought "academically successful incoming Vols who exemplify service, leadership and integrity," UT said in a school release.
"The growth of this program remains a point of pride for me," Manning said. "This is just the beginning of the positive mark these students will leave on their community and this university. I hope they will leave UT with the same passion for this special place that I have."
Manning is still the most prolific passer in UT football history, having thrown for 11,201 yards over four seasons from 1994-97. The first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, Manning won a Super Bowl with both the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
He endowed the scholarship when he graduated from UT in 1998 and it has been awarded to 69 students in the 29 years since. This year's four Manning Scholars all have diverse academic and career interests but are bonded by a "desire to lead and leave UT better than they found it," according to UT.

Mikayla Demaiter and Bryson DeChambeau were seen on the golf course together in their first public appearance.
On Tuesday, August 25, an X user shared footage of the couple from the LIV Golf Indianapolis tournament at The Club at Chatham Hills over the weekend. In the video, the pair is seen walking off the golf course as the model, 26, held onto the 32-year-old professional golfer's arm.
Another clip showed them signing autographs before getting into a golf cart and driving off with the two-time U.S. Open champion's arm on the social media star's leg. Demaiter wore a sporty outfit, consisting of a tennis skirt, white tank top, sneakers and a sweater draped over her shoulders, while the athlete wore khakis and a blue polo.

MECHANICSVILLE, Maryland: Lachlan Turner overcame a poor start and charged forward to win her seventh moto of the 2026 season at Budds Creek MX Park in Round 5 of the WMX season.
Turner was well outside the top 10 on the opening lap, but as has been true to form this season, she overcame the disappointing start quickly. She moved into fifth on Lap 1, was third on Lap 2, and took the lead from her principle rival, Charli Cannon, during Lap 4.
From that point on, Turner's victory was uncontested as Turner lengthened the gap in each of the final four laps.
Cannon finished second to keep her perfect streak of top-fives alive and her near perfect record of podium finishes. The winner of Moto 2 in High Point, a victory that also contributed to her overall victory, Cannon has only one result worse than third in nine motos.
In a throwback to the 2025 season when these three riders consistently paced the field, Mikayla Nielsen finished third. She opened the season with a sweep of the podium in the Hangtown Motocross Classic and then had a fuel pump problem in Round 2 at Thunder Valley. Nielsen rebounded to score another podium in Moto 2 that weekend, but struggled since and earned only one more podium in the last four motos.

NEW BERLIN, New York: Lachlan Turner overcame a modest start to move into the lead on the second lap of the WMX Moto 2 in the Unadilla National. Along with her win on Friday, Turner swept the motos and extended her winning streak to 10 races after going eight-for-eight in the Australian WMX series.
Charli Cannon also had to come through the pack after starting outside the top five. She passed several riders in the opening laps and once she got into second around Taylah McCutcheon for second, she managed to hold the leaders pace.
Mayla Herrick scored her first overall podium in the WMX series with finishes of fourth in Moto 1 and third in the second moto. Her highly anticipated WMX debut in High Point ended with a crash and concussion in Moto 2 after she won the first race.
Jordon Jarvis overcame a modest start in back-to-back races. On Friday, she got some help after multiple riders crashed on the tricky track. Jarvis finished third in that race, but could only manage to climb to fourth in Unadill's Moto 2. She finished fourth after losing the overall podium on the tiebreaker (best finish in Moto 2).
Mikayla Nielsen rounded out the top five in Moto 2.

The women will host the Irish at Memorial Gymnasium on Dec. 3 in a rematch of the Sweet 16 game between the two in 2026, which Notre Dame won.
