Once upon a time (although it wasn't just once), the Braves used Carlos Carrasco in a close game. Ronald Acuña Jr. got injured in that game and ended up missing about six weeks of play. The use of Carrasco turned sinister, the Braves lost that game, and then ended up mired in a funk that lasted for a good chunk of Acuña's absence.
Tonight, Ronald Acuña Jr. made his return to the lineup. It could have been a triumphant time, building on the Braves' recent strong run of results. Instead, amid some rain and another indifferent outing from Martin Perez, the Braves opted to insert Connor Thomas, the "last guy" in their bullpen, into a tie game. It went south almost immediately, and then it kind of ran out south to go, as the Mets just pummeled Thomas into oblivion. To the Braves' credit, they let Thomas wear it and didn't use another pitcher, avoiding a double-down mistake of using Thomas to save the rest of the bullpen but then not actually saving the rest of the bullpen. (Jorge Mateo got the last out in lieu of Thomas, after the score had ballooned to 14-3 in favor of the Mets.)
Before all that, though, the game was pretty cool. In his first major league PA in a while, Acuña fell behind 0-2 against Zac Thornton, battled back to 3-2, and then teed off on a pitch down the middle, knocking it 108 mph to center for a solid single. Drake Baldwin followed followed with a hard liner single of his own, and the Braves seemed to be in business. Unfortunately, Matt Olson hit into a double play, but Ozzie Albies, as part of a measure of personal revenge for possibly a career-worst game on Sunday, legged out an infield hit to plate his buddy for the first run of the game.
Martin Perez did not have a shutdown first inning. A hard-hit grounder went for a leadoff hit, and then Francisco Lindor got his arms extended on a cutter on the edge away and nearly hit it out of the park. The play ended up being kind of weird, as it looked like it was just going to be a double, but the ball bounced far enough off the wall that Lindor ended up getting an RBI triple. But, Perez pachinko also cuts the other way, as a grounder to third, a strikeout, and flyout to center kept the game tied at one run apiece.
Nothing much happened in the second or the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, after a leadoff single, Lindor again took a Perez pitch on the outer edge, this time a changeup, and pulled it into left for a two-run homer. Perez was hitting his spots, but it didn't matter. That score didn't last long: after Olson drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, Albies victimized Thornton by crushing an elevated fastball for a definitive non-cheapie homer. Michael Harris II singled and it looked like the Braves might've solved Thornton, but that didn't end up being the case, as Mauricio Dubon popped out and Austin Riley hit into a double play.

For global oil markets, already in a precarious situation, critical logistical nodes just keep getting thwarted. Things keep going wrong. Oil prices have started rebounding in return, reaching levels not seen since the first weeks of June before the signing of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding as Brent futures (BZ=F) crossed $100 per barrel on Thursday.
"If a ceasefire does not materialize," Rystad Energy head of geopolitical ***** ysis Jorge León said, "the risk of a significant rebound in oil prices would be substantial."
As the war between the US and Iran initially began in late February, attention swung toward the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway responsible for roughly a fifth of the world's oil trade. Threats of violence and, eventually, direct attacks on vessels by Iranian military wings sent traffic through the strait collapsing, kicking off the largest energy supply crisis on record.
Six months down the road, as the conflict has reignited, the danger for the global oil market has diversified, no longer concentrated in a single waterway or oil-producing country. Instead, disruptions are accumulating across the infrastructure that carries crude from the Middle East, processes Russian oil into 11% of the world's diesel, and supplies fuel to consumers from Europe to Asia — and at a time when the market is already squeezed after half a year's worth of supply disruptions.

Addison Barger is going to have season ending elbow surgery. He'll either have Tommy John or an internal brace surgery. Either way, he's likely to be out until the start of the 2027 season. If it is Tommy John, he'll likely miss the first part of the season.
Apparently, his elbow had been bothering him for a while, then he threw that 101.2 mph throw to get Jorge Soler at the plate on May 9th.

The central referees in the CBF PRO category took part last week in an immersion program in Madrid, Spain, for a series of training sessions ahead of the return of the Brazilian Championship Série A and the Copa do Brasil. The schedule included physical and technical training under the coordination of FIFA and Spanish Football Federation instructors.
The activities were held at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and were coordinated by Jean-Baptiste Bultynck, FIFA physical and technical refereeing ****** yst, Lada Rojc, FIFA technical refereeing instructor, Juan Carlos, refereeing instructor for the Spanish Football Federation, and Jorge Martinez, coordinator of the physical department of the Spanish Football Federation.

Although it feels more like a year, it's been only one week since it became crystal clear that President Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the one-game suspension that U.S. striker Folarin Balogun was due to serve for the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
Infantino issued a statement insisting that “FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent," creating the unmistakable impression that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided the case.
It was reportedly a committee of one.

The Mets struggled again today against the Red Sox, ultimately being shut out for the ninth time this season and losing 4-0. The offense could not get anything going, even as the pitching and defense made a good effort to strand most Red Sox runners.
Freddy Peralta looked good initially, throwing his fastball for the majority of the first inning and striking out the batters in order. In the second inning, he struggled more, and the results were not as impressive. Caleb Durbin threaded one between Francisco Lindor and Brett Baty for a single. In the next at bat, Peralta challenged ball 4, but the call was confirmed, resulting in a walk for Masataka Yoshida. A sacrifice bunt from Andruw Monasterio moved the runners to second and third with one out. Peralta walked Carlos Narváez to load the bases with two outs; however, he worked out of it by striking out Tsung-Che Cheng. Unfortunately, by the end of the second inning, his pitch count was already 43.
After a quiet first inning, the Mets offense walked a batter in each of the second and third innings, but could not capitalize or create any momentum. Carson Benge walked in the second inning and stole second base one pitch later, but the three batters went down in order after him to end the inning. The PEA set out a base case scenario with an after-tax NPV5% of $532 million, an after-tax IRR of 42.4%, and an initial payback of 2.8 years, using a base case gold price of $3,500 per ounce. At spot gold prices of $4,400/oz, the after-tax NPV5% increases to $836.8 million, with an IRR of 58.6% and an initial payback of 2.4 years. The PEA also estimated an initial capital of $202 million, average annual gold production of 51,250 oz over a 10.6-year life of mine, peak annual production of 57,200 oz in years 2 through 4, and life-of-mine AISC of $1,464/oz.

Jorge Jesus was announced as the new Portugal coach on Friday, which could have implications for Cristiano Ronaldo's international future.
The 41-year-old said he would take time to mull whether he will continue to play for Portugal after the World Cup last-16 exit to Spain on Monday. Jesus was his coach at Al-Nassr when the pair won the Saudi League last season.
"Today a new journey begins. Welcome to the national team, Mr Jorge Jesus," the Portuguese football **** ociation wrote on social media.
Portuguese media had long reported that Jesus would succeed Roberto Martinez, who left following the Spain defeat.
According to the reports, the 71-year-old is signing a contract until 2030 when Portugal co-hosts the next World Cup.
