Nestled between two mountain ranges at the crook of central California's coastline sits a valley known as the "salad bowl of the world".
Farm workers stoop over neatly lined rows of crops off Highway 101 to harvest more than half of the nation's supply of lettuce and nearly a third of its strawberries. The soil here is so rich that author John Steinbeck made the Salinas valley the promised land in his literary depictions of people chasing the American dream: immigrants, farm workers, westward-moving hopefuls, hungering for a better life.
It's a story that continues to capture the American imagination: Netflix has adapted Steinbeck's 1952 blockbuster novel, East of Eden, into a limited series starring Florence Pugh, released 1 October.
"This will be a valley of great richness one day," Steinbeck wrote of the farmland in East of Eden. "And happy people will live here, thousands and thousands."
But Steinbeck also understood just how difficult it can be to achieve that elusive American dream. Even after some his characters found their way to Salinas and other parts of California's agricultural valley, many remained stuck in low-paying jobs, making barely enough to scrape by, let alone own their own land.

A portion of a major California highway has been renamed after Hollywood icon James Dean 71 years after he died in a fiery crash on the road while driving to a race in Salinas.
Caltrans officials were joined by representatives of the late star in the town of Cholame on Wednesday where a segment of Highway 46—which connects the coast with the Central Valley—officially became the James Dean Memorial Highway.
"Yesterday's ceremony marked 71 years since Dean's tragic crash, and local leaders, CHP, and community advocates came together with one message: safer roads save lives," the announcement read, referring to the designation near the site of Dean's fatal 1955 crash.

Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday pulled out of negotiations with Olympique Lyonnais to sign veteran left-back Nicolás Tagliafico before the summer transfer window shut.
Atlético's interest in Argentina international Tagliafico first came to us via David Medina and Isaac Suárez in Marca. Atlético were seeking a backup for Alejandro Grimaldo after long negotiations for Racing Santander teenager Jorge Salinas fell apart Tuesday; Salinas is staying at Racing after no club paid his €16 million release clause.
Tagliafico had been in negotiations to join Juventus before Atlético entered the race. According to Fabrizio Romano **** ociate Matteo Moretto, Tagliafico spoke directly to Diego Simeone and prioritized a move to Atleti, having accepted his role would be as a substitute. To make room for Tagliafico and his roughly €3 million gross salary, Mateu Alemany had to clear **** e in the squad by finding new destinations for multiple players, including Josema Giménez, Thomas Lemar, Carlos Martín and Obed Vargas.
While the sporting director moved out Giménez and Lemar on deadline day, Vargas and Carlos Martín stayed. That meant Atleti could not move forward with a Tagliafico transfer, especially as Lyon could not secure a replacement. French media first reported its collapse before Spanish media corroborated later in the day.
Tagliafico, who turned 34 on Monday, has spent the previous four seasons playing for Lyon, but the French side's aggregate loss to Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League play-off round last week has put it in a bind. With Champions League income lost, Lyon need to sell players, and Tagliafico — entering the final year of his contract — was poised to be one of the casualties.

Manchester United's search for a left-back has developed into a longer game, with Lewis Hall still viewed as the standout target despite Newcastle United's firm position this summer. Credit to Ben Jacobs for The United Stand, whose latest update suggests Old Trafford decision-makers believe there is still a realistic route to the player, even if any immediate move remains highly unlikely.
Hall, 21, has been admired internally for some time and is considered a strong stylistic fit for Manchester United. Yet Newcastle's message has been consistent. After several notable exits from St James' Park during this window, the club have had no intention of entertaining a sale. That has effectively shut down any prospect of a late summer breakthrough.
What keeps the situation alive for United is the belief that the player remains open to the move in the future. "The signs from the Hall camp are he sees a very strong fit at Manchester United," Jacobs said. That confidence appears central to United's thinking, especially as they weigh whether to commit significant funds to another option now or preserve flexibility for a future push.
United have discussed other names, including Alejandro Balde and Jorge Salinas, but Hall continues to stand apart as the priority profile. The recruitment logic is understandable. He offers age, Premier League experience, technical quality and room for further development, all while filling a position that has demanded greater stability.
Newcastle, however, are moving to strengthen their own position. Hall is in talks over a new contract, and Matthias Jaissle has already made clear that Manchester United have "no chance" of signing him. Even so, there is a view at Old Trafford that a new deal would not automatically remove the possibility of a future transfer. "A new deal doesn't mean not for sale," Jacobs added.

The battle between Mateu Alemany and Deco could have another chapter before the transfer window closes, according to SPORT.
The sporting directors of Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona are once again competing for Jorge Salinas, one of the most promising young defenders in Spanish football.
The story also has an obvious personal dimension. The relationship between Alemany and Deco has carried some tension since the period when they worked together at Barcelona.
The arrival of the Portuguese in the club's sporting structure changed the balance of power within the sporting department and eventually preceded Alemany's departure.
The final stage of Alemany's time alongside Joan Laporta was not particularly straightforward either. Their relationship deteriorated over differences in sporting planning and management, eventually leading to hisexit.

Villarreal needed two goals in just over a minute to ***** a 2-2 draw at promoted side Racing Santander on Sunday in their opening La Liga clash.
The hosts claimed an early lead but Inigo Perez took a point on his debut as coach of the Yellow Submarine after Pape Gueye and Nicolas Pepe pulled the visitors level against the hosts from Cantabria.
Back in the top flight after a 14-year wait, Racing took the lead at their raucous El Sardinero stadium with an Andres Martin penalty after Santi Comesana was ruled to have fouled Jorge Salinas just inside the area.
Sergio Martinez smashed home a second for Racing with a thunderbolt from distance which ripped into the top corner.
Gueye gave Villarreal, who came third last season, a foothold with a low drive from the edge of the box in the 45th minute.

The board at Atlético Madrid look set to continue frustrating their counterparts at La Liga rivals Barcelona with their actions on the transfer front over the coming days.
This comes amid the understanding that the Rojiblancos are readying a decisive push to bring in Jorge Salinas.
Youngster Salinas has for his part been heavily linked with a move away from Racing Santander this summer. After playing a starring role in the club's promotion back to the top-flight of Spanish football at just 18, the versatile defender has piqued the interest of a whole host of clubs.
Chief among them are the aforementioned Barcelona, who have been tipped to bring Salinas in throughout the window to date.
As alluded to above, though, with the Blaugrana yet to meet the demands set out by their Racing counterparts, Atlético Madrid are ready to throw their hat in the ring.

Barcelona have not made any defensive reinforcements this summer but have different players on their radar.
The Catalan club have been tracking the progress of Racing Santander player Jorge Salinas, but a move has not transpired so far.
Barça wanted to complete the move before 1 July, insisting that his release clause was €8 million, since Racing had not officially been promoted to La Liga.
However, the newly-promoted club have insisted on the €16 million release clause from the outset, leaving the two clubs apart in negotiations.
Speaking about Salinas' future, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Racing sporting director Chema Aragon insisted the versatile defender will only leave if a club triggers his €16 million release clause.

In a recent report, Sport claimed that Manchester United have identified Racing Santander youngster Jorge Salinas as a target for this summer transfer window. It has been mentioned that the Red Devils are willing to trigger the Spanish defender's release clause to beat Barcelona in the race to land him this off-season.
Salinas enjoyed a good run of form at the Spanish club in the previous campaign when he produced a series of impressive displays for them on the left flank. The 19-year-old picked up seven ******* ists in 34 matches for Rayo Vallecano last season across all competitions.
The Spanish teenager is currently one of the most gifted young defenders in La Liga. Thus, the Red Devils would do well to win the race for his services in this transfer period.
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for Man United to sign him on a cut-price deal this off-season.

La Liga giants Barcelona are understood to have been joined in the hunt for a leading summer transfer target by Premier League heavyweights Manchester United.
This comes amid claims that the Red Devils have entered the race for the signature of Racing Santander talent Jorge Salinas.

Salinas chiefly takes to the pitch in a left-back berth, but is also more than capable of slotting into a central role at the heart of defence.
Considered one of the standout up-and-coming youngsters in his home country of Spain, the stopper has been linked with moves to a number of leading La Liga clubs this summer.

According to Gerard Romero, as relayed by SPORT, Jorge Salinas remains determined to join Barcelona despite negotiations slowing in recent weeks.
The Catalan club are unwilling to meet Racing Santander's €16 million asking price, but those close to the player remain confident that an agreement can be reached before the summer transfer window closes in August.
Salinas, who recently won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with Spain, continues to prioritise a move to Barcelona.
However, the versatile defender has no intention of forcing his departure from Racing, the club he has represented since childhood.
A product of the club's academy, he played his part in helping Racing secure promotion back to La Liga after a 14-year absence.

Barcelona's search for defensive reinforcements has led the club to Jorge Salinas, but Racing Santander have now provided an important update regarding the young defender's contractual situation.
The 19-year-old has emerged as a Barcelona left-back target in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that the Catalan side were monitoring the possibility of signing him before an expected increase in his release clause.
However, Racing insist the player's valuation has already changed.
Recent reports claimed that Jorge Salinas possessed an €8 million buyout clause that would rise to €16 million from July 1 onwards. However, Racing Santander have strongly denied that interpretation.
Speaking to Teiba Sport (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Racing communications director Roberto Gonzalez explained that the club views the defender's contract differently.

Laying the groundwork for a free trade agreement that would remake his nation's economy, Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari loaned crates of art to the United States in the autumn of 1990. Bolstered by a $10 million advertising campaign, the works were destined to be shown in a series of one hundred and fifty exhibitions and events intended to counter Americans' derisive views of Mexico. Illustrating many of the ads was a self-portrait of Frida Kahlo.
Frida Kahlo, Untitled [Self-portrait with thorn necklace and hummingbird] 1940. Nickolas Muray Collection of Mexican Art.
The selection of Kahlo's mestiza visage as the face of Salinas's neoliberal propaganda was as prescient as it was improbable. Within a decade, Frida would become one of Mexico's leading exports. Championed by celebrities including Madonna – who deemed Kahlo her "soul mate" – the artist grew into a global brand in the years that Salinas privatized the Mexican economy and NAFTA lifted his country to the pinnacle of globalization. Mattel brought a Frida Kahlo Barbie doll to market. Frida's name and likeness, known only to an elite in her lifetime, have been licensed for products ranging from sneakers to cosmetics. For those manufacturers, and for the neoliberals who appropriated Kahlo to sell free trade with Mexico, her life of political radicalism is left unmentioned. (Mattel never considered making a doll of her lover Leon Trotsky.)
The peculiarities of "Fridamania" provide the leitmotif of Frida: The Making of an Icon, a sprawling exhibition organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, now on view at Tate Modern. The MFAH curator Mari Carmen Ramírez suggests an underlying cause for Kahlo's many conflicting representations in the opening paragraphs of her astute catalogue essay. Kahlo's iconicity "is not limited to a single image but is plural, resulting from the seemingly infinite number of competing icons that today comprise and perpetuate her myth," Ramírez writes, making the case that the myth entails much more than even the legends of Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. "The Frida phenomenon is unlike anything else in past or recent history. It is not limited to Kahlo's art-making but extends to all aspects of her social image, innermost character, as well as her attire."
As a "polyvalent" icon with a lifelong habit of narcissistic theatricality, Kahlo has been put in the service of causes ranging from Chicano identity to Mexican dignity, from socialism to feminism, from queerness to disability. All of these have a basis in her life, which also included the role of devoted wife and muse to the muralist Diego Rivera, and the part of avant-garde painter creatively mixing Mexican folk art with Surrealism. Each of these dimensions of her character has attracted different constituencies to the cult of Frida. And many aspects of her identity have come into fashion recently, decades after her premature death in 1954.
