It took 11 days for the public to learn Kyle Shanahan had been involved in a car accident on July 14. But since the announcement Saturday, it hasn't taken long for more details to come out about the scary collision that will limit the San Francisco 49ers head coach for the start of training camp.
Specifically, more has been revealed about the injuries Shanahan suffered after ESPN already reported he broke his nose, three ribs and his hand, suffered a severe concussion and required more than 40 stitches.
On Monday, PFT Live's Chris Simms said Shanahan's wife sent him pictures of the gory injuries his friend suffered, and they showed Shanahan nearly lost his eye.
"When you first see it and it's fresh and some of the cuts are still wide open, it's jarring. It's jarring. He was this close to maybe losing his right eye. The scar is so big right here," Simms said, pointing at his eye.
Those aren't the only new details to trickle out.

The San Francisco 49ers have two representatives on Fox Sports' 2020s NFL Half-Decade Team, with left tackle Trent Williams and inside linebacker Fred Warner earning spots on the star-studded roster of top players.
Both Williams and Warner have been with San Francisco for the entirety of the six years being measured — Williams via a 2020 trade from the Washington Commanders, and Warner as a homegrown product of the 49ers' 2018 draft class.
Williams has arguably been the best left tackle in the NFL since arriving in the Bay Area, earning three first-team All-Pro nods from 2021-23 and a second-team selection last season. His run atop the position has been remarkably sustained, spanning nearly the entire half-decade as well as seven Pro Bowls before 2020.
Warner, meanwhile, leads all inside linebackers with four first-team All-Pro selections since the start of 2020, edging out Baltimore's Roquan Smith, who has three. Before missing 11 games last season due to an ankle injury in 2025, Warner made four All-Pro teams in the previous five seasons, recording at least 125 tackles in each of those years and totaling 38 pass breakups over that stretch.
One notable absence from San Francisco's group was running back Christian McCaffrey. It's a jarring omission given his peak dominance and Offensive Player of the Year-caliber seasons with the 49ers, but Derrick Henry, the lone running back selected, has been far more durable than McCaffrey over the same window. Henry has rushed for at least 1,100 yards in five of six seasons, missing that mark only in 2021 when he played through injury and still topped 900 yards. McCaffrey, by contrast, has dealt with significant injury trouble at multiple points in his 49ers tenure.

Scottie Scheffler's performance at the Scottish Open was jarring.
The world number one missed his first cut since August 2022, shooting a two-over par 72 on Friday to fall two shots below the cut line. Scheffler has always struggled at this event, but this was a new low in what has been a disappointing year for his lofty standards.
Scheffler held the longest active made cut streak on the PGA Tour prior to this week, making the weekend in 78 straight events. It was some way shy of Tiger Woods' record of 142, but it's still a mightily impressive achievement. He ranks fifth all-time in the all-time ranking of consecutive made cuts.
The new holder of the active record has some way to go to catch Scheffler's tally.
Unbelievably, it's Matt Fitzpatrick who now holds the record for the most consecutive made cuts on the PGA Tour, with 28. Until this season, the Englishman hasn't been performing well, but he's been consistent enough week to week to maintain this record.

I'm not sure there are many actors in Hollywood who have gotten more positive comments about their appearance over the past few decades than Dwayne Johnson. From WWE superstar to action staple to the biggest name in Hollywood, The Rock won the ******* iest Man Alive crown back in 2016 and hasn't exactly gotten less attractive in the last decade. For the past several months, however, he's been getting a taste of how the rest of us live, as he's been the subject of cheeky jokes and zany one-liners thanks to his look in the upcoming Moana.
Johnson voiced Maui in Disney's Moana ten years ago and is returning for the live action version, which hits the movie release schedule later this week. Since the moment the first trailer dropped, however, fans have been making cracks about the big guy's wig. People aren't used to seeing The Rock with such luxurious and flowy hair, and there are many who think the production department could have chosen some locks that were a little less jarring. Maybe a little less Weird Al Yankovic?

But ****** ysts are quick to point out one glaring vulnerability that could sabotage their aspirations. To return to standard-bearing dominance, San Francisco must first solve its self-inflicted defensive crisis up front, says ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Until proved otherwise: the pass rush and, by extension, the defense. In 2025, San Francisco finished last in the league in sacks (20), 31st in pressures (157) and 29th in pass rush win rate (29.2%). ... The pass rush is the key to unlocking it all, and if that group can take a step in the right direction, the 49ers should be much better defensively in 2026.
While those numbers are jarring for a franchise built on defensive line supremacy, context offers an immediate glimmer of hope. The Niners should be much improved simply by getting defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams back from torn ACLs. Bosa projects to return at the beginning of training camp or soon after. Williams might be a bit further behind, but also has a chance to get back early in the season.
Just as important, the Niners added defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa via a trade with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason and drafted rookie Romello Height. Odighizuwa should be the best interior pass rusher the team has had since Arik Armstead's departure, bringing with him a 10% pass rush win rate that ranked ninth among defensive tackles in 2025 as well as 17.5 career sacks and 81 career quarterback hits. Height had 10 sacks at Texas Tech this past year.

An 8% plunge in the high-flying U.S. chip stock index on Tuesday marked a jarring injection of volatility into mid-year trading. Memory chipmaker Micron Technology fell around 13%, reversing ‌all its gains from the day before, ahead of its earnings update today.

Sometimes past results do not predict today's performance.
Shane McClanahan came into the night having allowed only two home runs over his last 56.0 innings pitched. Six pitches into Tuesday night's game, he allowed two more.
The game didn't immediately start with doom and gloom. Taylor Walls made a diving play on a grounder from Lane Thomas to open the game. Then Nick Loftin hit a solo homer to left. Then, Tampa native, Jac Caglianone followed with one to right. Two swings, two runs, and suddenly the Royals had a 2-0 lead. McClanahan recovered enough to strike out Salvador Perez and get Carter Jensen to fly out, but the damage was immediate and jarring. Tropicana Field has been kind to McLanahan lately, winning his previous five starts. This inning, an ultimately game, was not.
The Rays didn't just concede defeat; they tried to fight back. Yandy Díaz was hit by a pitch, Jonathan Aranda singled, and Junior Caminero lined a run-scoring single to center to make it 2-1. It started to feel like the Rays were on a path to tie the game or maybe even take a lead. Instead, Richie Palacios got caught stealing to end the frame.
Building momentum and losing it became a theme of the night.

Nelly Korda could – this week – become the first American to play her way into the LPGA Hall of Fame since Juli Inkster in 1999. Korda is two points shy of the 27 needed to qualify for what many consider the toughest Hall in sports. In fact, the list of LPGA legends who aren't in the LPGA's Hall is jarring, including Laura Davies, Meg Mallon, Dottie Pepper, Hollis Stacy and Cristie Kerr.
A victory at this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeline would give Korda three legs of the calendar grand slam and put her in the Hall of Fame.
Regular LPGA events are worth one point and majors are worth two. Korda has four wins this season, including major championship victories at the Chevron Championship and U.S. Women's Open.
Should Korda not win again the rest of the season, she's likely to earn two points at the end of the season for the Rolex Player of the Year award and Vare Trophy for low scoring average. Korda's 68.26 average is currently more than a full stroke lower than her closet competitor, Hyo Joo Kim.

Shipping a product people love and running a company that makes money are two different jobs. One earns applause. The other earns a line on the balance sheet, and the two rarely arrive in the same week.
Rivian spent years selling the idea that it could become the next great American carmaker. Its trucks won awards. Its brand built a following most legacy automakers would envy. Amazon (AMZN) placed a large delivery van order and an early equity bet. For a company that has never posted an annual profit, the entire story rested on one promise, that a cheaper, higher volume vehicle would finally turn all that attention into earnings.
That vehicle is the R2, a midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) built around a promised base price near $45,000 that began reaching buyers in June 2026. It is the most important launch Rivian has ever attempted. Which is what makes the timing of the next move so jarring.
Rivian laid off hundreds of workers on Tuesday, June 16, roughly one week after the first R2 deliveries. The cuts touched less than 2% of its workforce and fell mostly on service and customer teams. Rivian said it had "restructured a handful of teams" as it works to scale the business profitably, according to CNBC.
The size of the cut is small. The signal is not. Rivian employed 15,232 people at the end of last year, so less than 2% works out to up to roughly 300 jobs, according to Electrek.

Scottie Scheffler has opened up on what frustrated him most about his week at the Memorial Tournament after registering his worst finish at Muirfield Village since his very first appearance.
Scheffler had a turbulent week at the latest signature event on the PGA Tour. It looked entirely possible that the world number one may even miss the cut after stumbling out of the blocks.
It was surprising to see given that Scheffler had won the Memorial in both 2024 and 2025. But it is also fair to say that the 29-year-old has not been at his very best for much of the season.
Nevertheless, it was jarring to see just how angry Scheffler was getting, particularly after he found the water on the 16th hole on Thursday.
The early signs suggested that things may not improve for Scheffler on Friday. He was three over par for the day through 10 holes. But just when it appeared that he may be about to miss the cut, he started to get his act together.
