A court in the Netherlands has sentenced a Dutch-Rwandan man to life for his involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
The 66-year-old, named only as Eugene N, was accused, among other things, of throwing a hand grenade into a crowd of Tutsis who were seeking shelter in a stadium. He was convicted of war crimes and the crime of genocide, having acted with "genocidal intent", the judge said.
Rwanda had sought his extradition in 2014 but the authorities in the Netherlands then launched their own investigation into N, who had become a Dutch citizen.
In 100 days in April 1994, an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus people were killed by Hutu extremists.
The court in The Hague heard N held an authoritative position in the community at the time of the massacre, overseeing around 1,000 people in Mbazi in southern Rwanda.

Everton started their cup play against Preston North End after the 40 mile drive down the M58 and up the M6. David Moyes ended his playing career at Preston and also started his managerial career before Everton came looking for someone to save them from the drop in 2002. A lot has happened since then but what has not changed is the fact that neither team have won silverware since then and today was another step in that journey. Quinbrook has selected GE Vernova to provide technology for the third stage of the Supernode battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Queensland, Australia, expanding its involvement to all three phases of the development.
The agreement will see GE Vernova deliver power conversion, plant controls, system integration and grid-connection support for stage three.
The Supernode site is located adjacent to the South Pine substation, a central component of Queensland's electricity transmission network. The facility stores electricity during times of surplus and dispatches it back into the grid when demand rises or renewable output fluctuates.
This process supports dependable power supply and allows for greater integration of renewable energy sources into the network.
The first and second stages, which also used GE Vernova technology, are now fully operational and are among the largest BESS facilities running in Australia's National Electricity Market.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for a severe punishment following Brydon Carse's latest involvement in a nightclub incident, saying the ECB must take action strong enough to deter the entire England cricket setup from similar behaviour.
Carse became the latest England player to attract scrutiny after a video emerged showing the fast bowler handcuffed by police outside a nightclub. He was briefly arrested while out with Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board to investigate the incident.

The ECB subsequently confirmed that Carse "will no longer be available for selection" for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday. Hampshire right-arm seamer Sonny Baker has been called up as his replacement.
Vaughan believes the latest episode requires a response that sends a clear message across English cricket.
"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," former England captain Vaughan said on BBC Radio. "It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."
Carse's case comes amid a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. Last October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, while Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.

Vaughan acknowledged that Carse could feel hard done by if he is punished heavily in light of the wider pattern of incidents.
"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.
"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," said Vaughan.

Former England captain Michael Atherton has revealed why he joined a group of 21 former international cricketers in calling on Pakistani authorities to ensure imprisoned former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan receives proper medical treatment.
Imran has been in prison since 2023 after being convicted in corruption cases, charges he has vehemently denied. Concerns over his health have grown in recent months, with reports earlier this year claiming that he had lost sight in one eye.
The reports prompted former cricketers to appeal to the authorities for his medical care. Last week, 21 former international players again wrote to the authorities after Imran was reportedly taken to a hospital following an order from the country's top court, but was allegedly not properly examined.
Atherton, speaking on a Sky Sports cricket podcast alongside former England captain Nasser Hussain, said the appeal was not simply about ensuring medical treatment for Imran. He also expressed concern over what he described as an attempt to erase the former Pakistan leader from public life.
"Nass [Nasser Hussain] and I were among 21 former captains who sent a second letter yesterday, a humanitarian appeal for Imran Khan to get the requisite level of treatment. But I suppose the basic theme was the way the state has tried to airbrush Imran almost out of existence, which is increasingly difficult to do in a social media age," Atherton said on a Sky Sports cricket podcast in the company of Hussain.
The group included several prominent former cricketers from across the cricketing world. Former India captains Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar were also among those who signed the appeal.
The involvement of the three Indian cricketers was particularly notable given the political tensions between India and Pakistan and Imran's own history as Pakistan's prime minister.
Kapil explained why he felt compelled to support his former cricketing rival and friend, while also acknowledging that Pakistani cricketers could be in a difficult position if they spoke publicly.
"I don't blame Pakistani cricketers for not speaking up. They have to live there. But I would like to support my friend, whom we admired and played with," Kapil said.
The former India captain stressed that the appeal was not about intervening in Pakistan's legal process but about ensuring basic care and dignity for a prisoner.
"We don't know the law of the country, that's fine. But humility and simple facilities should be given to a prisoner, whoever he may be. And he was a former prime minister of the country and a top cricketer.
"We want him to get the best treatment, [that's] what we are asking for. We are not asking for anything else, we are not asking for any replies, we are requesting," the former India captain added.

News of the agency's involvement comes mere hours after officers for the Greenville Police Department visited the family home of her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson. The U.S. military killed two people in a strike on an alleged drug-trafficking vessel in the Eastern Pacific, resuming a controversial campaign that has faced criticism from legal experts.
The Aug. 23 strike, part of a nearly year-long operation targeting alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, was the first such attack in more than two month, according to independent conflict monitor ACLED.
The U.S. military's Southern Command said in a social media post that the strike targeted a "low-profile vessel" and that "intelligence revealed the vessel's active involvement in narco-trafficking," without providing evidence. SOUTHCOM described the two individuals who were killed as "narco-terrorists." The military released a video showing the strike and the vessel on fire.
"Let me be clear, we will not permit narco-terrorists to operate with impunity in the Western Hemisphere, nor will we allow their deadly poison to reach American communities," SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis Donovan said in a statement.
More than 200 people have been killed in the military campaign, dubbed Operation Southern Spear, that began in September 2025 and has involved dozens of boat strikes.

Jed York's weekend arrest wasn't the first time San Francisco 49ers ownership has found itself on the wrong side of the law – though, ironically, those past legal missteps are largely why York finds himself in such a prominent position now.
York, 46, who pleaded no contest Monday, Aug. 24, to two misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools in Columbiana County, Ohio, after a charge of "engaging in prostitution" was reduced, was, until recently, the NFL's youngest principal owner. That track largely became available to him starting in 2000, when his uncle, Pro Football Hall of Famer Eddie DeBartolo Jr., relinquished control of the team to his sister Denise DeBartolo York (Jed York's mother) and brother-in-law John York (Jed York's father).
Prior to that, DeBartolo was widely perceived as an owner whom stars throughout the league wanted to play for given his demand for championship football – the 49ers won five Super Bowls between the 1981 and 1994 seasons, none since – but also his willingness to spare no expense while caring for the members of his roster. (The Niners would eventually be hit with nearly $1 million in fines and forfeited a fifth-round draft pick in 2001 plus a third-rounder in 2002 after the NFL found them guilty of circumventing the salary cap, which came into existence in 1994, during a 1999 investigation.)

Aug. 23—A wonderful tradition dating to 2018 played out Saturday morning in Urbana — bigger and better than ever.
A total of 72 girls' swimmers and divers from Urbana, Champaign Central, Centennial, Uni High, St. Thomas More and Mahomet-Seymour participated in the C-U Relays, a service project and charity event that brings rivals together in advance of the competitive season.
What takes place out of the pool is highly impressive.
Teams and families collect snacks, diapers and Pull-Ups for children in Crisis Nursery's care. After the meet, swimmers, divers and coaches deliver the donations to Crisis Nursery's Touch-a-Truck event in Champaign.
"We are incredibly proud of these 72 young women for coming together not only as athletes, but also as members of our community," Urbana coach Amanda York said. "The meet is a great example of how high school athletics can extend beyond competition and provide opportunities for teamwork, service, friendship and community involvement."

Chicago's lakefront was filled with young competitors Saturday morning as athletes of all ages gathered for Supertri Chicago weekend, beginning with the 2026 Supertri Chicago Kids Triathlon at Foster Beach.
The race got underway with a countdown of "three, two, one," followed by the sounding of horns as participants entered the competition.
Some of the city's youngest athletes took on the waters of Lake Michigan and then transitioned to cycling and running in the triathlon challenge. Among them was 12-year-old Brooke Casey, a veteran participant who said the event remains a highlight.
"It's just fun. And I like when I see other people doing it like I see like little kids doing it and it's really fun," Casey said.
For Casey and her brother Kyle, the event has become a family tradition. Their father, Brendan Casey, said the family's involvement spans more than a decade.

"Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe hosted a meeting of interested Allies at the chief of defence level on Wednesday, 19 Aug 26, in order to facilitate their possible contributions to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," a spokesperson for the alliance's top commander U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich said on Friday.
"To be clear, this is not a NATO mission. But given NATO's unique strengths in its ability to bring together Allies and understand the capabilities they bring to bear, it makes sense for NATO to facilitate in this way," the spokesperson added.
NATO allies have sought to avoid direct involvement in the Iran conflict, instead focusing on plans outside the alliance to reopen the strait, which before February carried about a fifth of all traded oil.

For decades, Natalie Portman has been one of our most cerebral stars. A 1999 Vanity Fair cover, promoting "The Phantom Menace," asked whether the then-17-year-old might "choose Harvard over Hollywood." She managed to do both, earning an Ivy League degree and an Oscar. Her characters in movies from "Jackie" to "May December" are often overthinkers, and her Instagram book club picks tend toward high literature.
Who better, then, to serve as the heroine of a Rachel Cusk novel?
Cusk, the experimental novelist, is set to publish "Life of M," about an unnamed actress coping with feelings of alienation and depersonalization, on Aug. 25. Cusk's work, like the well-loved "Outline" trilogy, favors deep excavation of inner turmoil over what might be called "plot," and "Life of M" is no exception. Still, the obvious similarities to the known facts of Portman's life have earned the book plenty of buzz.
To wit: M, a former child star who received her greatest acclaim for playing a ballerina, is raising children, seemingly solo, in Paris. All of this checks out, and Portman's putative connection to Cusk — she selected Cusk's last novel, 2024's "Parade," for Natalie's Book Club, and both actress and author live in Paris — lends the enterprise a juicy overlay of gossip.
There's no public information indicating Portman's involvement in the project, or whether she approved it at all. (Portman's rep and the book's publicist at Farrar, Straus and Giroux did not respond to requests for comment.) And if people are reading "Life of M" as a document of truth, it may be in part because the novel so confidently places its reader within restricted access zones. We see M through the eyes of a narrator, an unnamed person who has obtained M's permission to document her life. And so we accompany M to a spa, where she and a younger actress chitchat about their peers and discuss Hollywood's gender pay gap, and to an interview at a chic restaurant, where she observes strangers snapping her picture. The access Cusk grants extends deep into M's mind as well: With her friend, M ponders how she might help a new generation of actresses despite her own "ennui" about the industry; with the journalist interviewing her, M is burdened "by the impossibility of anyone ever understanding what she is."

Cusk, the experimental novelist, is set to publish "Life of M," about an unnamed actress coping with feelings of alienation and depersonalization, on Aug. 25. Cusk's work, like the well-loved "Outline" trilogy, favors deep excavation of inner turmoil over what might be called "plot," and "Life of M" is no exception. Still, the obvious similarities to the known facts of Portman's life have earned the book plenty of buzz.
To wit: M, a former child star who received her greatest acclaim for playing a ballerina, is raising children, seemingly solo, in Paris. All of this checks out, and Portman's putative connection to Cusk — she selected Cusk's last novel, 2024's "Parade," for Natalie's Book Club, and both actress and author live in Paris — lends the enterprise a juicy overlay of gossip.
There's no public information indicating Portman's involvement in the project, or whether she approved it at all. (Portman's rep and the book's publicist at Farrar, Straus and Giroux did not respond to requests for comment.) And if people are reading "Life of M" as a document of truth, it may be in part because the novel so confidently places its reader within restricted access zones. Hayden Panettiere's death investigation has taken a new turn as the Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the ongoing probe.
The Heroes and Nashville actress died August 16 at age 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, just days before her 37th birthday. Her official cause and manner of death have not been determined.
According to People, a source confirmed that the DEA is now ***** isting with the investigation. The Greenville City Police Department remains the lead investigative agency.
Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence, and emergency responders attempted to revive her after finding her in cardiac arrest. An autopsy did not reveal any trauma that contributed to her death, while toxicology results are still pending. The coroner previously said those results could take up to eight weeks.

However, she recently released another statement, clarifying her complex bond with her daughter and speaking about her passing. MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian government on Wednesday to launch a programme to rebuild commercial warehouses damaged or destroyed by Ukraine in a month of targeted attacks.
Ukraine has carried out drone strikes against at least two dozen warehouses of Russia's top online retailer Wildberries since July 18, causing explosions and fires that have destroyed a large chunk of its storage capacity.
Putin, without naming the company, said a number of logistic sites needed rebuilding with state involvement, and told the government to work on this.
"It is essential to ensure that the restoration of damaged facilities is carried out at a qualitatively new technological level," he said in televised comments to a conference of ministers and business leaders on the economy.
Putin said the economy was growing modestly despite external pressure — a reference to Western sanctions — and despite Ukrainian attacks on industrial and infrastructure facilities.
