Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) has agreed to pay $670 million to settle claims involving about 2,000 people who alleged that its specialized preterm infant formulas contributed to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious and potentially fatal bowel disease affecting premature infants. The settlement also resolves Abbott's appeal of a $495 million verdict involving an Illinois mother, after that judgment was upheld by a Missouri appeals court. Abbott did not admit liability and continues to maintain that its products are safe.
The bigger issue for investors is that the settlement does not fully end the litigation. Abbott says claims from as many as 12,700 people remain, although that figure includes duplicate and unsupported claims as well as cases where it is unclear which manufacturer's formula was used. More than 825 federal cases are consolidated in Chicago, with additional cases pending in state courts.
That makes the settlement both a cost and a potential step toward reducing uncertainty around the litigation.
The strongest argument for Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) is that the $670 million settlement could put a meaningful portion of the legal risk behind the company. Rather than continuing to spend years fighting individual cases and risking additional large jury awards, Abbott has chosen to settle with a sizable group of plaintiffs. The company said the agreement is intended to substantially resolve the broader litigation.
There is also an important distinction between the products involved in the lawsuits and Abbott's broader nutrition business. The litigation concerns specialized formulas and products used for premature infants in hospitals, rather than the ordinary infant formulas sold through stores. That limits the direct exposure of Abbott's wider consumer nutrition portfolio.

Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) has launched a HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) Hong Kong share placement to fund its artificial intelligence ambitions. The company plans to use all of the proceeds to strengthen its "full-stack" AI capabilities, including computing infrastructure, chips, and AI model development. The offering involves 710 million new shares, which will increase the company's share count and dilute existing shareholders. The placement was reportedly oversubscribed, indicating strong institutional demand for the offering.
The timing of the capital raise is important. Alibaba recently reported a 75% year-over-year decline in quarterly net profit, while capital expenditures jumped 75% to RMB67.68 billion. At the same time, its AI Cloud and Compute Services revenue rose 45% to RMB48.44 billion. This shows the trade-off investors are currently facing: Alibaba is spending heavily on AI, which is pressuring near-term profitability, but the investment is also producing strong growth in its cloud business.

AI Cloud and Compute Services revenue increased 45% in the latest quarter, while revenue from AI-related products continued to record triple-digit growth. This suggests that Alibaba is not simply spending money on an unproven technology; it is seeing growing demand for its AI and cloud offerings.
The additional $10.2 billion could allow Alibaba to accelerate this growth. The company has the advantage of operating across several parts of the AI ecosystem, including cloud computing, AI models, chips and infrastructure. Building these capabilities together could help it capture more value as businesses increasingly adopt AI.
The capital raise also gives Alibaba additional financial flexibility as it pursues its long-term AI strategy. The company had already committed substantial funds to AI and cloud infrastructure, and the latest offering allows it to continue investing without relying entirely on internally generated cash.

After losing the first game of the Premier League season, Tottenham hopes to avoid an upset in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, Aug. 26, hosting second-tier Charlton Athletic in London.

Coach Todd Monken has already indicated the Aug. 27 game against the New England Patriots won't involved any of his starters. Considering the injuries at some key positions, it's probably not going to involved a whole lot of players who key backups or rotational pieces as well.
What it will involve is a bunch of players who may have roster spots already in hand, but those spots could easy slip away with a tough performance. It'll also involve two quarterbacks who both may be fighting to stay.

Mike McGrath has reported for The Telegraph that Manchester City are set to bid to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea imminently. McGrath further reports that Chelsea will want at least £120 million to part ways with the Argentinian international. McGrath adds that City have long seen Enzo Fernandez as a player who could slot into their midfield rebuild.
Manchester City have signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer to bolster their midfield. Ayyoub Bouaddi is set to see his move to City from Lille made official sooner rather than later. The signing of Bouaddi will further strengthen City's engine room. However City's midfield refit isn't yet complete. So far, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Bernardo Silva have all left City and Nico Gonzalez is also likely to sign for Newcastle United in the coming days.
Enzo Maresca holds Enzo Fernandez in high regard as a midfielder and as a leader. The fact that Maresca selected the combative and gifted midfielder to be Chelsea's captain attests to this. Making such a decision after the racism controversy that Enzo Fernandez was involved does also seem telling.

The Indiana Fever have become one of the most popular teams in the WNBA over the last month or so.
It was revealed earlier this month that at least one women's basketball game had been watched by 2.5 million viewers or more every week since July 12.
Four of the five games to reach the 2.5 million mark involved the Fever, with the other the WNBA All-Star Game.
The Fever are, of course, home to Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, who are two of the most followed players in the league on Instagram.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles' offense provided an accurate summary of their summer during Tuesday night's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There were explosive plays, creative formations and impressive touchdown throws. There were also protection problems, missed opportunities and two interceptions returned toward the end zone by Riq Woolen.
The overall performance was uneven. The encouraging part was that the offense showed how difficult it could become to defend when its top skill players are healthy.
Hurts connected with Smith on a deep out route during the opening move-the-ball period. He found Smith again while rolling outside the pocket on a play-action concept. Smith later made one of the night's best catches, securing a deep crossing route in tight coverage against Quinyon Mitchell before accelerating toward the end zone. The chemistry was not perfect. Hurts underthrew Smith on a deep post that could have become a touchdown. Mitchell recovered to break up the pass. Smith also dropped a shallow crossing route on third-and-6 despite having enough **** e to extend the possession.
Their strongest connection may have come later when Smith caught a dig route against Woolen. The cornerback attempted to undercut the route, but Smith adjusted his angle, secured the pass and turned upfield for what could have become a touchdown in a live game.
Hurts' first interception came on a throw over the middle intended for Makai Lemon. Woolen recognized the dig route, drove in front of the rookie and took the football toward the end zone. The second interception occurred in two minutes. Hurts faced pressure from Jalyx Hunt and threw off his back foot toward Smith on an out route. Woolen anticipated the pass, secured his second interception and returned it for a touchdown. Both turnovers involved questionable ball placement, allowing Woolen to attack the football without going through the intended receiver.

On paper, the Atlanta Hawks made improvements from last season. Although they didn't have the most exciting offseason, they made enough progress to build on last season's accomplishments.
Hawks GM Onsi Saleh used this offseason to establish an identity. There is no doubt that Atlanta expects to be among the top defensive teams in the NBA next season. A common theme of the Trae Young era was that the Hawks had a great offense, but a not-so-great defense. Of course, that isn't entirely Young's fault, but now that Atlanta has moved on, its roster construction and philosophy have shifted.
The Hawks made big improvements to become a top defensive team. On offense, Atlanta has prioritized athleticism, which allows them to excel in transition. For instance, the Hawks ranked fourth in the NBA last season in transition possessions and points per game.
Atlanta will enter next season with a clear identity. That said, one major question remains if the Hawks want to reach their potential.
Because they frequently play in transition, the Hawks ranked fifth in the NBA in pace last season. Their offensive identity involved turning defense into offense and running in transition. Last season, Atlanta finished 10th in points in the paint (just over 51.1 PPG). The Hawks' style of play made players like Jonathan **** inga a great fit last season.

The Chicago Bears have been involved in trade discussions surrounding defensive tackle, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Tuesday. Dexter, who turns 25 in October, is currently in the final year of his rookie contract.
Schultz previously reported in February that teams were calling on Dexter's availability around the time of the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. Now, Schultz is claiming that there are "multiple scenarios where a deal could get done".
Dexter was a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft coming out of Florida. He is coming off a 2025 campaign in which he tallied 44 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, and a career-high 6.0 sacks. He placed No. 32 among 107 qualified defensive tackles in PFN DT Impact Scoring, a ranking which indicates he's an average starting defensive tackle. That said, his pass-rushing production and youth gives him considerable upside on the open market.
Should the Bears actually trade Dexter, they would free up over $1.6 million in 2026 cap **** e. The reason to trade Dexter wouldn't be highlighted by the immediate cap relief, but rather, the draft capital Chicago could obtain in a deal. If the team realizes they likely won't extend him at the price he and his agency are asking for, it could make sense in the long run to get a draft pick for him, rather than let him walk in free agency for nothing.
Of course, the Bears' defensive line has been the subject of much discussion leading up to the 2026-27 NFL season. Their four-man front consistently struggled to generate pressure in the pass rush and had issues in run support, and they didn't do much to address the need this offseason. Trading Dexter would certainly weaken their interior defensive line and thrust the likes of Neville Gallimore, Kentavius Street, and sixth-round pick Jordan van den Berg into bigger roles alongside Grady Jarrett, who is coming off a disappointing 2025 season.

Quinbrook has selected GE Vernova to provide technology for the third stage of the Supernode battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Queensland, Australia, expanding its involvement to all three phases of the development.
The agreement will see GE Vernova deliver power conversion, plant controls, system integration and grid-connection support for stage three.
The Supernode site is located adjacent to the South Pine substation, a central component of Queensland's electricity transmission network. The facility stores electricity during times of surplus and dispatches it back into the grid when demand rises or renewable output fluctuates.
This process supports dependable power supply and allows for greater integration of renewable energy sources into the network.
The first and second stages, which also used GE Vernova technology, are now fully operational and are among the largest BESS facilities running in Australia's National Electricity Market.

Tennessee athletics director Danny White said NFL players attempting to return to college football was an "avoidable circumstance."
But it's too late to head off the problem. Now numerous players cut from NFL rosters are planning to join college football rosters, particularly with coach Lane Kiffin at LSU.
A frustrated White told Knox News that a collective bargaining agreement would've solved this problem years ago.
"This is yet another example, along with hundreds of other things, that could be included in a CBA," White said on Aug. 25. "It would be clearly and transparently understood by all parties involved. But for some reason, we're not able to do that. And here we are."
White is headed to SEC headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, for a regularly scheduled meeting of conference leaders on Aug. 25. They will undoubtedly discuss the issue of NFL players trying to play for SEC teams. Other conferences already have taken action.

The new study, trumpeted by the New York Times with a companion article suggesting that OSHA should get involved, regarding CTE rates in pro football likely won't alter in any major way the realities of or participation in the sport, at all levels. Unless and until CTE can be diagnosed in living patients, football players will continue to embrace the vague (but real) risk of developing cognitive problems later in life.
But the data could provide ammunition for one specific aspect of the game. It could fuel an effort to move the touchback point on kickoffs from the 35 back to the 30.
Last year, when the touchback changed to the 35 and teams became incentivized to put more kickoffs in play, concussions spiked. Specifically for the player returning the kick and the player tackling him.
The league is well aware of this reality. And the question is whether the NFL becomes content to have fewer returns in the name of having fewer high-impact hits for two of the 22 players on the field during a kickoff play.
And while the current kickoff play dramatically reduces the possibility of the one potential outcome the league never says out loud (catastrophic neck injuries leading to potential paralysis or death), it presents a clear risk of increased concussions. As one source put it, it was "the elephant in the room" at the annual league meetings in March.

When asked to identify college football programs that have elite talent at receiver even as freshmen, the first answer that crosses most people's minds is the Ohio State Buckeyes. The USC Trojans, however, aim to change that narrative with their most recent recruiting class. The Trojans also have a couple of talented freshmen who will be positioned to contribute to the offense.
Here are some freshmen on offense who could make a big impact for the USC Trojans:
Redeaux has track speed at the running back position. If he gets any carries this season, there is a good chance he will find his way to the end zone with his speed alone. With his breakout in fall camp, It is very likely he ends up as the 3rd back on the depth chart. Having to deal with thunder and lightning in King Miller and Waymond Jordan, and then having to deal with Redeaux's home-run-hitting speed, spells trouble for Big Ten defenses.
Boobie Feaster is a big play waiting to happen, and he has showcased that already in much of the Trojans' fall camp footage. There is a good shot that he will be the starting slot receiver, and with that, he will make many big plays for the Trojans this season. It is players like this that will be so necessary when facing defenses like Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana. Lincoln Riley will love getting the ball in Feaster's hands. More often than not, Feaster will make both Riley and Jayden Maiava right.
Mosley will be a guy that Lincoln Riley will try to get involved, given how much of a playmaker he can be with the ball in his hands. He has game-changing speed and was already dubbed this year's potential Adoree' Jackson for the Trojans. His skill set will be useful on special teams, and if the Trojans can get production in that area to complement their offense, that could make a difference in some pivotal games this year.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for a severe punishment following Brydon Carse's latest involvement in a nightclub incident, saying the ECB must take action strong enough to deter the entire England cricket setup from similar behaviour.

Carse became the latest England player to attract scrutiny after a video emerged showing the fast bowler handcuffed by police outside a nightclub. He was briefly arrested while out with Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board to investigate the incident.

Carse had been part of England's squad for two of the three Tests against Pakistan but was released to play for Durham after being left out of the XI for the first Test at Leeds. He contributed 26 runs and returned figures of 2-82 as Durham beat Derbyshire inside three days.

The 30-year-old then went out with his Durham team-mates to celebrate the victory, during which the incident occurred.

The ECB subsequently confirmed that Carse "will no longer be available for selection" for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday. Hampshire right-arm seamer Sonny Baker has been called up as his replacement.

Vaughan believes the latest episode requires a response that sends a clear message across English cricket.

"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," former England captain Vaughan said on BBC Radio. "It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."

Carse's case comes amid a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. Last October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, while Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.

During the Ashes tour of Australia, Ben Duckett was filmed apparently drunk during England's holiday in Noosa.

Then, in June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke a team curfew and were present when a member of England's security staff was punched by Saracens rugby player in a London nightclub.

Vaughan acknowledged that Carse could feel hard done by if he is punished heavily in light of the wider pattern of incidents.

"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.

"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," said Vaughan.

"Hacks" star Hannah Einbinder has come to the defense of Mark Ruffalo after Paramount accused him of invoking "antisemitic tropes" when criticizing the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.
It all kicked off on Friday, when Ruffalo shared a clip on Instagram of Paramount board member Safra Catz outlining "really profoundly scary technologies" that Oracle — the tech giant co-founded by Larry Ellison, father of Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, who is involved in the merger's financing — used to help the Israeli military after the Oct. 7 terror attack. Ruffalo likened Larry Ellison to a "classic oligarch" and warned of the consequences if Paramount and Warner Bros. are allowed to merge, alleging that the Ellisons "are crushing workers and consolidating the wealth of the world for their own power and concentrated dominance." Of Catz, he said: "Look how she revels in what we now have come to see as a genocide, which was built on an apartheid system of oppression powered by Oracle."

When the Arizona Cardinals waived Trey Benson with an injury designation on Monday, Aug. 24, it earned them unwanted admission into a dubious club.
Twenty-eight months after they entered the NFL, 96 of the first 100 picks in the 2024 draft remain on active rosters. Benson, now, is among the four castaways — until and unless he gets scooped up elsewhere.
The three others: Ja'Lynn Polk, a second-round wide receiver who finished his rookie season with 12 catches and missed all of his second season with injuries before retiring; Jermaine Burton, a third-round wide receiver who developed a habit of missing practices and was involved in a domestic dispute; and Terrion Arnold, who currently faces the possibility of life in prison on kidnapping and robbery charges.
That is the company Benson currently holds. But most concerningly, he's not alone. For the Cardinals, this may just be the beginning of a week-long purge of former top draft picks.
In that same 2024 draft, the Cardinals selected cornerback Elijah Jones with the 90th pick. They seem to have five roster locks at cornerback, meaning Jones could be competing with Starling Thomas V for one roster spot. If that's the case, Thomas would seem to have the inside edge, despite a poor preseason. He was a reliable contributor in 2024 — something Jones has never been — and may need more time to return to full strength after a torn ACL last July.

Chris "Block" Gordon, a veteran drag racer who starred in the Discovery reality series Street Outlaws: Fastest in America, was killed in a horrific crash at a raceway in Ohio over the weekend. He was 55 years old.
KD Motorsports Park confirmed the passing on Facebook on Sunday (August 23), writing, "As most of you know by now, we had a devastating accident last night at the track involving our great friend and fellow racer, Chris "Block" Gordon…he was lost as a result of this terrible incident."
"Please keep his wife and family in your thoughts and prayers as we all try to mourn the loss of this good man, an absolute legend of our sport," the statement continued.
The post revealed that "staff was immediately on scene with trained medical staff, firefighters, EMT and medical equipment, along with highly medically trained bystanders who exhausted all of their efforts at the time of the accident."
"As the day passes and we all try to process this tragedy, please for all involved let's keep speculation and uninformed opinions to a minimum as we pray for his family," the statement concluded. "RIP "Race in Peace" my friend you will be missed by so many."

As the league and The Athletic (owned and operated by the Times) reportedly discuss a content partnership that would create a clear conflict of interest for the Times, the Times has exercised its uncompromised-for-now independence by publishing an article that further underscores the long-term health risks of playing pro football.
Via John Branch of the Times, a new study from The BMJ finds that at least 24.5 percent of all former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE.
Of the 878 who died during that period, at least 215 had CTE. Of the remaining 663, 643 of the players' brains were not studied for the presence of CTE. Which means that the real percentage could be much higher.
