Netflix gave up on buying Warner Bros. Discovery's studio and streaming business on Feb. 26. By the next day, Paramount Skydance, the company that outbid it, paid Netflix $2.8 billion.
The money was a breakup fee written into Netflix's own deal with Warner, and Paramount covered it as part of its winning bid, according to a Warner Bros. Discovery securities filing.

Paramount completed its $111bn acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery on Tuesday, consolidating some of the world's most recognizable studios and news outlets after a bidding war with Netflix and months of legal turmoil.
The new company, now called Skydance, will have David Ellison, the son of a billionaire tech mogul, at its helm, with the former CEO of Mattel, Ynon Kreiz, as co-executive. They will oversee Paramount and Warner Bros' movie studios, HBO Max, CBS News and CNN.
"Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry," Ellison said in a statement. "From the start, our ambition was to bring these two storied studios together and create a stronger competitor, with the talent, resources, and reach to tell great stories in every genre, on every platform, for audiences everywhere. Now that ambition is a reality."
The consolidation of Paramount and Warner Bros combines two of the last five legacy studios in Hollywood, which includes Disney, Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures.
Though the merger was approved in June, California, New York and 10 other states sued Paramount over concerns that the move would "extinguish" competition and lead to fewer movie theaters in theaters and at home.

Paramount closed its $81 billion (€72bn) purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, the companies announced on Tuesday, forming a new Hollywood giant called Skydance.
The merger brings HBO Max, films ranging from "Harry Potter" to "Sinners", and networks including CNN under the same roof as Paramount+, CBS and ******* les such as "Top Gun" and "The Godfather".
"Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry," CEO David Ellison said in a statement.
The deal further concentrates power in an industry already run by just a handful of major players. Ellison's Skydance bought Paramount in an $8bn (€7.1bn) deal last year, and set its sights on Warner soon afterwards.
What followed was a tumultuous, yearlong fight over Warner's fate. Including billions of dollars in debt, Paramount's buyout of Warner amounts to nearly $111bn (€98.6bn).

The $110 billion merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery closed on Tuesday after Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan denied a last-minute effort to halt the deal.
The new company — known as Skydance (SKYD)— brings the HBO Max and Paramount+ streaming services under one umbrella, roughly seven months after Paramount won a long bidding war with Netflix (NFLX) for Warner Bros.
The merger faced plenty of pushback and a long road to closing.
"The completed transaction unites two of media and entertainment's most storied companies, each with a history spanning more than a century, giving the combined business a rare legacy to build on," Skydance stated in a press release. "The aim of the combined company is to build the next-generation global media and entertainment company powered by creativity and technology."
The company's entertainment franchises span "Sopranos" to "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Euphoria" to "Harry Potter." The portfolio also encompasses television networks CBS, CBS News, CBS Sports, CNN, TNT, TBS, Nickelodeon, and MTV, among others.

Is there any investment market segment more debated than gold (XAUUSD)? I'm not sure there is. We have "gold bugs," including those who see the yellow metal as the ***** et to own when the world goes haywire.
Then, there are the "we're going back on the gold standard" types. The ones that preceded crypto bros in believing fiat currencies weren't for this world. It follows that gold would return to its former role as the reserve currency.
Get exclusive insights with the FREE Barchart Brief newsletter. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market ***** ysis you won't find anywhere else.
Of course, there are also plenty of investors who don't really think about gold investing very much, and who will simply trade it when there's a good opportunity. I'm in this camp.
Financial media pundits routinely tout gold as some sort of bulletproof allocation. Inflation worries? Own gold. Currency debasement? Own gold. Want your kitchen to be decorated like the Oval Office? You'll need a lot of gold.

On September 8, 2026, Reuters reported that Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY) said California Attorney General Rob Bonta made television statements that contradict his own legal arguments against Paramount's request for a $1.88 billion bond in the ongoing court fight over its roughly $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD).
Bonta's office has argued the bond is unnecessary because Paramount voluntarily agreed to pause the deal's closing rather than wait for a court injunction. But Paramount described that same pause as equivalent to an injunction in media interviews, which it argues legally requires the states to post a bond under antitrust law. A hearing is scheduled for September 24.
Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY) could protect a significant portion of its financial position if the court grants its $1.88 billion bond request. Paramount says the delay could cost it about $1.3 billion in fees to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders by the time the case concludes in April 2027. A bond would give Paramount a potential path to recover those losses if it ultimately defeats the states' challenge. It reduces the financial damage from a prolonged legal process.
Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD) is receiving financial protection from the transaction's delay through Paramount's ticking fees. Paramount agreed to pay WBD shareholders approximately $7 million per day starting October 1 if the transaction does not close, creating a growing payment obligation for Paramount. It is also providing WBD shareholders with compensation for waiting. The arrangement gives WBD a financial benefit from the prolonged closing process even as the companies await a final legal resolution.
The legal dispute has not eliminated the strategic rationale for combining the two media companies. Paramount argues that the merger would strengthen the film and television industry and lead to more content while giving the combined company greater scale to compete with Netflix and Disney. For Paramount, completing the acquisition would speed up David Ellison's plan to build a larger media competitor. WBD shareholders would receive the transaction consideration rather than remain exposed to the company's standalone turnaround.

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday granted Paramount Skydance's request to allow Middle Eastern royal families to hold a substantial stake in a merged Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery.
Foreign investors, including the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, are slated to indirectly own nearly 50% of the equity in David Ellison's proposed mega-studio. That will give them a hefty stake in CBS, CNN, Comedy Central, HBO and two historic Hollywood film studios.
Paramount also asked the commission, led by President Trump's appointee Brendan Carr, to allow the foreign investors to eventually take on an even bigger stake because the company expects that it will need more capital to run the merged entity after closing the highly leveraged deal.
The FCC's Media Bureau granted Paramount's petition. Ellison needed FCC approval because the deal will change the ownership structure of CBS.
As part of the Communications Act of 1934, Congress placed restrictions on foreign ownership of broadcast outlets because of concerns about national security. Current rules prevent foreign investors from owning more than 25% of a company that holds a U.S. broadcast license — unless the FCC determines that foreign ownership would serve a public interest.

Paramount Skydance will meet with California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta's representatives next month for court-ordered settlement talks that could clear a path for David Ellison's $111-billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
The two sides will convene for two days, Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, according to court documents filed this week.
The talks come as both sides look for ways to resolve the pitched battle over Hollywood's industry-reshaping deal, which would put HBO, CBS, CNN, TBS, Food Network, Comedy Central and the Paramount and Warner Bros. studios under one roof. Bonta and 11 other Democratic state attorneys general sued in July to block it, and Ellison's team has been stoking political pressure on Bonta to retreat.
Bonta canceled a session last month after prelimary details and ground rules leaked, prompting him to accuse Paramount of "playing games" by violating a confidentiality agreement and spreading misinformation.

Weitz Investment Management, an investment management firm, released its second-quarter Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Multi Cap Equity Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. The Multi Cap Equity Fund's Institutional Class returned 7.90% in Q2, underperforming the Bloomberg U.S. 3000 Index's 15.71% gain. Markets rose in the quarter on hopes of de-escalating Middle East tensions and easing oil flow. Investor focus shifted back to artificial intelligence, despite component shortages like processing chips affecting profits and valuations. Valuation-sensitive investors are selective within the AI sector, in contrast to valuation-agnostic indexes that adopt a more relaxed strategy. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund highlighted Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) as a newly added postion. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is a leading subscription-based streaming entertainment platform. On September 15, 2026, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) closed at $77.90 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $324.37 billion. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) posted a one‑month return of -2.89%, while its shares lost 36.59% over the past 52 weeks.
Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund stated the following regarding Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"We initiated two new positions during the second quarter. Most will be familiar with global streaming giant, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX). The company made headlines as it tried to acquire Warner Bros. from Warner Bros. Discovery before ultimately walking away from a bidding war for the company. Some investors feared its bid signaled stagnation in its streaming business. At the time of this writing, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is also captivating audiences and draining attention and engagement from Netflix's service. Despite these near-term perception headwinds, we are optimistic that Netflix's introduction of an ad-supported tier is a savvy strategy to extend its growth runway: Netflix will not only participate in the large, multi-billion-dollar global advertising market, but a lower-price ad-tier broadens its potential customer base while simultaneously enhancing the pricing power of its premium, ad free tier."
Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) ranks 13 on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 121 hedge fund portfolios held Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) at the end of the second quarter, down from 144 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX) could be positioning itself for its next major phase of growth following its roughly $10 billion acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals. The deal gives the company immediate exposure to the endocrinology market and provides a new commercial platform beyond its established cystic fibrosis franchise.
On September 3, Citigroup **** yst Geoff Meacham highlighted the strategic importance of the Crinetics acquisition, arguing it could diversify Vertex's business while complementing its existing cystic fibrosis franchise and newer businesses in renal disease, hematology, and pain.
Through the transaction, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX) gains access to Palsonify (paltusotine), an oral treatment for acromegaly that has already received regulatory approval in Europe. Paltusotine is also in Phase 3 development for carcinoid syndrome **** ociated with neuroendocrine tumors.
Palsonify is particularly important because it provides an immediate commercial revenue opportunity, rather than requiring the company to wait several years for an entirely new drug to reach the market.
Early uptake of Palsonify has been encouraging, supported by expanding physician adoption and improving reimbursement coverage. If that momentum continues, the drug could become an important contributor to Vertex's revenue growth.

Pierce Brosnan is ready to say goodbye to his slice of Malibu paradise, after decades of dodging wildfires, worrying about earthquakes and shelling out a fortune to keep his sprawling $100 million compound afloat.
The former James Bond star, 73, and wife Keely Shaye Smith, 62, are preparing to move on from the spectacular oceanfront estate they have called home for more than two decades, with Brosnan admitting that life along California's famously volatile coastline has begun to lose some of its ****** er.
"We've been spared by the fires a few times now. But I think it's time to move," Brosnan told The Times. "Everything changes, everything falls apart."

Sandra Bullock revealed two conscious decisions that shaped her film career. While promoting Practical Magic 2 and speaking with Jennifer Aniston, Bullock revealed what gave her the courage to reject 'perverts' at auditions.
When Aniston asked the Gravity star about decisions that shaped her career, one thing that Bullock mentioned in Interview magazine was, "I was auditioning for every pervert that existed asking me to drop my pants. I was like, 'Nope, not the role for me.' I was working my way up. Every working actor thinks you will never work again, so you just take what you can get and make the most of it."
The 62-year-old's other decision was to step away from rom-coms altogether, after the genre began weighing on how she was perceived as an actress. She stated that she wanted to explore other avenues as an actor: "The only time I was intentional about my career was when I said, 'I need to stop right now with the rom-coms,' because I was getting so much ******* for them. And I took a role in this film called 'Crash'… I wanted to start flexing other muscles."
The Practical Magic star has delivered some of the most iconic rom-coms of the 2000s, such as The Proposal, Two Weeks Notice, and Miss Congeniality. It was in 2002 that the actress decided to branch out to other types of roles, returning in a dramatic capacity with the film Crash. However, she didn't step away from rom-coms completely. The frequency decreased, however.

Sandra Bullock has been taking a break from acting in recent years, but she's back to promote her movie on the 2026 release schedule, Practical Magic 2. And wow, am I realizing how much I missed her. Exhibit A: Her hilariously relatable rant about chin hairs.
Man, did I forget how real the actress can be, and then the Practical Magic 2 press tour came along. Bullock is just one of those celebrities that I want to be best friends with. As if I didn't already love her for calling herself "Zendaya's shoe polisher", just check out Sandra Bullock's thoughts on the topic of chin hairs:
This is a very important subject. My sister and I have an agreement. Should any of us be in a coma, the other one has to come to the hospital and always pluck the chin hair. Do you know what I mean? You're on it all the time, you're like, 'Oh, I got this thing.' But, you're still alive and awake. When that's no longer available what's going to grow without permission? Get the sister. That's why sisterhood is important.

This year hasn't treated Netflix's (NFLX) stock well, and it is down over 18% year-to-date (YTD). It peaked above $108 in April ahead of its Q1 2026 earnings. However, that report triggered a selloff in Netflix, as did the next one. Incidentally, the company did not raise its 2026 guidance in either release, which dampened sentiment and raised fears of a slowdown in the back half of the year.
To be sure, Netflix hasn't had a linear decline this year, and the stock has had its moments. It rallied in late February after the company announced that it was walking away from the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) ******* ets. It did not hurt that Paramount Skydance (PSKY) paid a $2.8 billion breakup fee to Netflix for stepping aside from the deal. NFLX hit its 2026 lows following its Q2 2026 confessional but smartly rallied from those levels, in part aided by the disclosure that Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Holdings (PSHZF) took a stake in Q2.

Pierce Brosnan thinks the Lucifer star Tom Ellis could be the next James Bond. Ellis revealed what the former 007 star told him about potentially taking up the role of James Bond.
James Bond casting could have another contender, as Pierce Brosnan reportedly believes Ellis has what it takes to play the role. While talking about his upcoming drama CIA, Ellis told Metro U.K., "When I got the script, the character of Colin was this enigmatic tinderbox of many things that he has to sit on. The more research I did about the CIA, the more interested I was in playing him."
Ellis said his research for the role left him fascinated by the CIA and its work.
Ellis plays Pierce Brosnan's son in The Thursday Murder Club. When asked whether Brosnan gave him any advice for his new spy role, he said, "No, he didn't. But he did tell me he thought I'd make a good Bond, and I was like, 'Pierce, I think I'm probably too old now. But I'll take it from you, mate. I'll take it from you.'"
Tom Ellis is not currently among the actors widely rumored to play James Bond. His run as Lucifer Morningstar ended five years ago.

CNBC reported that Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY) CEO David Ellison has cleared regulatory approval in 68 jurisdictions for his $110 billion bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD), but a lawsuit from 12 state attorneys general remains the final obstacle.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who leads the states' case, canceled a planned settlement meeting with Ellison, noting a "lack of good faith." Paramount said it remains "hopeful" and denied being the source of leaks about the talks. Media veteran Tom Rogers said California's home constituency is "overwhelmingly against the transaction," reducing the state's incentive to settle. Paramount faces a ticking fee that could reach roughly $650 million per quarter starting September 30 and asked a court to force the states to post a $1.88 billion bond.
The deal already holds broad global regulatory approval, which strengthens Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY)'s position in the remaining state dispute. With clearance from roughly 68 jurisdictions worldwide, the state antitrust lawsuits represent the main remaining obstacle rather than a broad regulatory challenge. This gives Paramount a strong basis to argue that the transaction has already withstood extensive regulatory scrutiny.
For Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD) shareholders, California Governor Gavin Newsom is sending a clear signal that he prefers a settlement over a prolonged court battle. If Paramount can satisfy California and the other states, WBD shareholders can finally receive the agreed payment instead of remaining stuck in legal limbo. That makes a negotiated resolution potentially attractive to shareholders who have faced prolonged uncertainty around the transaction.
Paramount has also shown flexibility rather than simply defending the deal's original terms. The company has acknowledged that it is considering structural changes to settle the lawsuits. It shows management is willing to make concessions to get the transaction completed. That flexibility could improve the chances of reaching a settlement without requiring the companies to wait for a lengthy court process.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Kamden Sixkiller threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns, Spencer Jones had a career-high 126 yards receiving and a score, and Campbell beat Western Carolina 28-19 on Sunday in a game postponed due to weather.
Campbell is off to its first 2-0 start since 2018 after securing the program's second victory over an FCS top 25 opponent. WCU entered ranked No. 24 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll after beating Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 29.
Campbell scored a touchdown on its first two drives before taking a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Ethan Lawrence that was set up by a 43-yard strike from Sixkiller to Brady Ambrose. Sixkiller also found Ambrose for a 6-yard TD to cap a 10-play, 91-yard drive to start the game, and Sixkiller scored on an 8-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
Sixkiller finished 29-of-44 passing with three interceptions for Campbell. JJ Cowan had a team-high 83 yards on the ground. The Camels posted 528 yards of total offense for their second straight game with 500-plus.
Lex Thomas was 25-of-44 passing for 326 yards and two touchdowns for Western Carolina (1-1). Both of Jai Boyd's catches were for touchdowns.

With seven days to go before the Green Bay Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings in the 2026 regular season opener at U.S. Bank Stadium, here are seven things for Packers fans to know about Kevin O'Connell's team entering 2026:
Unlike last season, the Packers won't be facing J.J. McCarthy or Max Brosmer in the season opener. The Vikings are turning a new page at quarterback, starting former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray to open the 2026 season. Murray is 0-2 as a starter in his career against the Packers. At his best, Murray is a playmaker at quarterback who can extend plays or create explosive gains with his legs. But Murray hasn't led a team to a winning record as a starter since 2021, and his career passer rating is 92.2. Last season, Murray played in only five games, and he hasn't appeared in a regular season game since Oct. 5 of 2025. Can he provide a higher baseline of play at quarterback in Minnesota, and is he more than just another stopgap?
Kevin O'Connell on Kyler Murray: "I think he's demonstrated what he's capable of, both the experience he has playing at a high level in this league, but also his experience now of coming in here being challenged. And I think he's shown enough to really project with the right prerequisite now of work for a starter leading into a camp that we can get the rhythm, the timing, we can get the mastery of our system and this year's system, regardless of what we've done in previous years, what we're going to look like, how we're going to play. There's different things and nuances that we're going to fit to what our players, Kyler included, do the best. And in my opinion, he's got the skill set and the abilities, not only just from a standpoint of accuracy, but his ability to affect the game with his athleticism."
A bit of a surprise before Week 1: Harrison Smith is coming out of retirement to re-join the Vikings for a 15th NFL season. A versatile veteran who knows Brian Flores' system inside and out, Smith provides an experienced veteran who can get everyone on the same page pre-snap and play from multiple alignments post-snap. While he wasn't in Minnesota for training camp, it's likely Smith will be ready to contribute right away in Week 1. The Packers will have to wait another year to face the post-Smith Vikings.
The Vikings traded away top pass-rusher Jonathan Greenard, leaving a hole on the edge of Brian Flores' defense. He was a menacing rusher who made the Pro Bowl in 2024, but Greenard dealt with lingering injuries in 2025 and is now playing for the Eagles. Who will take over his role? Dallas Turner, a 2024 first-round pick, is now expected to be the go-to pass-rusher in Minnesota. Expect to see plenty of battles between Turner and 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan next Sunday. Last season, Turner produced 8.0 sacks and 15 quarterback hits. Is he ready for a breakout season in Year 3? Andrew Van Ginkel is another productive player on the edge, and the Vikings also added veteran Kyle Van Noy to t

After Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, tributes came pouring in from celebrities, and many shared their favorite memories and advice from the legendary singer. Now, Queen Latifah has spoken about the sweet on-brand gesture that the Queen of Country Music made after a long day of shooting their movie together.
Back in 2012, Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah starred in the musical dramedy Joyful Noise, which is about two clashing women coming together to save their small-town choir from shutting down. After a long day of shooting, Parton did something for Queen Latifah that was great for the heart and stomach, as the Chicago actress explained on The Drew Barrymore Show:
I mean, we did a movie called Joyful Noise together. And we had so much fun. She wrote all these songs and she made me chicken and dumplings. After a day of work, who the heck has time to make chicken and dumplings for me? There's nothing [she can't do].

Actress and liberal activist Jane Fonda had some surprisingly positive things to say about Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison despite her complete opposition to a merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fonda took questions this week at the DVF Awards charity gala held during the Venice Film Festival, and she said she likes Ellison "very much," which makes her vocal opposition to his $111 billion merger a bit awkward.
"It's sad for me because I like David Ellison very much," Fonda said, according to Variety.
The 88-year-old actress noted Ellison's Skydance financed her Netflix series Grace and Frankie which ended in 2022.
"David's Skydance financed Grace and Frankie, my seven-year-long run for Netflix, and I got to know him, and I like him. But that doesn't change things. This is not a personal thing. This is what it will do to the entertainment industry, which is already suffering terribly," Fonda said.
