Two recent road projects have been turning heads in the construction industry, and they have something interesting in common.
Both the $9.2 billion Interstate 24 Southeast Choice Lanes project in Tennessee and the $4.6 billion state Route 400 Express Lanes in Georgia use concessions, which allow a consortium in a public-private partnership to benefit from future use fees, such as revenue from tolls.
In exchange, the consortium puts forward a significant amount of cash to design, build, operate and maintain the roadways. For contractors, being a part of a consortium can potentially give them stable work and revenue for decades.
For example, in the case of the Georgia state Route 400 project, the consortium is Peach Partners, comprising Acciona Concessions, ACS Infrastructure and Meridiam, which will deliver and maintain the project under a 56-year public-private partnership. The consortium is providing a $3.8 billion concession fee to the state's DOT to help fund other roadway projects as part of the P3 to design, build, operate and maintain the express lanes, per the U.S. DOT.

Lil Durk has been cleared of every charge in the federal murder-for-hire trial that drew packed courtrooms, celebrity spectators and crowds of supporters to downtown Los Angeles.
A federal jury found the 33-year-old Chicago rapper, whose legal name is Durk Banks, not guilty on September 11 after three days of deliberations. The case centered on an August 2022 attack targeting rapper Quando Rondo that instead killed Rondo's 24-year-old cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, according to The ******* ociated Press.
Prosecutors accused Durk of financing and directing the attack in retaliation for the 2020 killing of his close friend Dayvon "King Von" Bennett. Durk's lawyers argued that former ******* istant Kavon Grant organized the plot without the rapper's knowledge and attacked the credibility of cooperating witnesses who had reached plea agreements with the government.
Durk was not released after the verdict. He remains in federal custody because he faces a separate trial involving murder-related racketeering and firearms allegations, with jury selection currently scheduled to begin October 5.
Durk had faced five counts: conspiracy to commit stalking, stalking using a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, conspiracy to use interstate commerce facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death and use of interstate commerce facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death.

The Flying Biscuit Café has signed a franchise agreement with franchisee Keisha Carter to bring the Atlanta-born all-day breakfast and brunch brand to McDonough, Ga., and the surrounding Henry County market. The site and opening date will be announced separately.
Henry County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia. Its population rose from 203,922 residents in 2010 to 240,712 in the 2020 census, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated it at 264,922 in 2025. McDonough, the county seat and its largest city, sits along Interstate 75 about 30 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. Carter, who lives in the market, said growth there has outpaced the area's sit-down breakfast and brunch options — the gap that drew her to it.
Carter brings nearly 10 years of experience in sales, business development, operations, client relations and team leadership, including roles at several Fortune 500 companies before moving into entrepreneurship. She holds an MBA in finance management and is a Six Sigma Black Belt, and currently leads a metro Atlanta real estate group where she oversees business operations, marketing, sales strategy, team development and client experience. She and her family have been Flying Biscuit regulars for years, and often talked about the south metro needing a location closer to home.
Carter will partner with Eric Gladmon, who will serve as the venture's main operating partner. Gladmon owns and operates an Atlanta salon that has been in business for more than 30 years, and brings that ownership and operations experience to the group.

CBS NFL ******* yst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has pleaded no contest to a charge of operating while intoxicated and has issued a statement apologizing for the actions that led to his July arrest.
Romo was arrested July 23 following a traffic stop as he was driving south on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. CBS has since placed him on leave from his role as its lead NFL ******* yst.
According to Milwaukee County court records, Romo lost his driving privileges for six months and was ordered to complete an alcohol ******* sment program. He also owes $834. An interlock device must be installed on any vehicle owned or operated by Romo or registered to his name, and that order will remain in effect for at least one year after he is issued a license.
"The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant," Romo said in a statement on Instagram. "It has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully — to the Lord, to myself, to my family and now to the public."
Romo said the multiple back surgeries that led to his retirement as a player "left me with constant, debilitating pain." He noted that the pain "led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol."

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS NFL ***** yst Tony Romo "accepts full responsibility for his actions" in the July 23 incident that led to his arrest in Milwaukee and subsequent four citations, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
"Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved," the spokesperson said Aug. 27 in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other news organizations. "We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps."
Earlier in the day, Romo received citations for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle. He had previously been cited for refusing to take an intoxication test after his arrest.
Romo, a Burlington native, was arrested July 23 after a deputy pulled him over on southbound Interstate 43, and he performed poorly on a field sobriety test, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. He was in the area to participate in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf event in West Bend and told the deputy that he was on his way to a family member's house after the event concluded.
Following his arrest, CBS placed Romo on leave until further notice.

In August 1978, Bill Rasmussen was stuck in traffic on Interstate 84 with his son, Scott, trying to solve a problem: They had plans for a sports cable network and enough satellite capacity to cover 8,760 hours a year. What could possibly fill all that time?
Scott offered an answer that sounded almost absurd: play sports all day.
From that traffic jam emerged the blueprint for what became the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, soon known by its initialism, ESPN.
That brainstorm established Rasmussen, who died Aug. 18 at 93 from the effects of Parkinson's disease, as a founding father of around-the-clock sports television and helped change how generations of fans consumed sports.

Four people were arrested after authorities said hundreds of vehicles blocked all northbound lanes of Interstate 75 during an apparent street takeover in Hillsborough County, Florida early Saturday, prompting a high-speed chase that reached 140 mph.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, where Florida Highway Patrol traffic cameras captured a large gathering of vehicles stopping traffic while some drivers performed burnouts in the middle of the interstate, according to an arrest report.
As troopers responded to the scene, video showed vehicles rapidly dispersing as drivers and spectators rushed back to their cars, the report said. While most of those involved were allowed to leave without facing charges, one green BMW allegedly sped away from the scene, leading a trooper to initiate a pursuit.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — CBS NFL ****** yst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle when he was stopped by police last week and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
According to one of three citations released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the "open bottle of an alcoholic beverage" was discovered in the passenger's side of Romo's black Jeep during an inventory before it was towed.
Another citation said police stopped Romo on Interstate 43 on July 23 after he was seen passing cars in a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from cars entering from an on-ramp. Police said Romo questioned what a gore area was during the stop.
Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, booked and released. Court records show Romo was later cited for refusing "to take test for intoxication after arrest." He has a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 21.
According to body camera footage released earlier this week, Romo told deputies he had been coming from a golf course and was on his way "to visit grandma and grandpa" when he was stopped.

Boomer Esiason told his radio audience barely a day earlier that he didn't expect CBS to comment on the situation at all, a read that lined up with how the network had handled things all week. The Daily Mail had reported days earlier that CBS executives had already closed ranks around Romo, with one source telling the outlet, "I don't want to act like it's not a big deal, because it is. But it's not going to get him fired." A second characterized the arrest as a "lapse in judgment" rather than anything approaching a fireable offense, noting Romo had reached out to his bosses almost the moment it happened.
Romo was pulled over on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee County on the night of July 23, hours after competing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship, and taken into custody after performing poorly on standardized field sobriety tests. Body camera footage of the stop later surfaced on TMZ, including Romo's own reaction to the test results.

A Dallas County jury last week hit freight broker C.H. Robinson with a share of a $604 million verdict in Peyton Lipe et al. v. Lupus Superior, LLC et al. The case stems from a deadly 2021 crash on Interstate 20 in Mississippi. A tractor-trailer operated by Lupus Superior and driven by Gorgonio Gonzalez plowed into stopped traffic. The wreck sparked a multi-vehicle fire that killed Jennifer Lipe, Benjamin Brewer, and Rhoderick Coleman. Two others were seriously hurt. Gonzalez also died.
The jury found the driver, the motor carrier, and C.H. Robinson all negligent. The jury ******* igned Gonzalez with 45% responsibility, Lupus Superior with 32% responsibility, and C.H. Robinson 23% responsibility. Lupus Superior, a Grand Prairie, TX based motor carrier, holds a satisfactory safety rating with the FMCSA. More importantly, the jurors decided Gonzalez was acting as a "borrowed employee" of C.H. Robinson and was carrying out a mission under the broker's control. That finding opens the door to full vicarious liability for the driver's negligence. C.H. Robinson has said it will appeal.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Part of a major interstate highway in Oregon was closed Monday due to a wildfire that forced a small town to evacuate, one of dozens of blazes burning across the state.
The Fox Fire forced the closure of Interstate 84 for some 70 miles (113 kilometers) between Baker City and Ontario near the Idaho state line before reopening later in the day, the Oregon Department of Transportation said. I-84 is a key thoroughfare, running from Portland in the west through the Columbia River Gorge and into eastern Oregon before crossing the Snake River eastward through Boise.
The transportation department said the wildfire remains active in the area and that intermittent closures were still possible.
Challenging wildfires have burned across the Western U.S. this summer, following months of dry weather, a record lack of snow in some areas, hot spells and erratic winds. The Fox Fire was burning near the Oregon-Idaho state line about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of the small town of Huntington, which was under a Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order, meaning its roughly 500 residents have been told to leave immediately.
