Geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China are central to the bull cases for stocks like USA Rare Earth (NASDAQ: USAR) and MP Materials (NYSE: MP). China dominates the global market for the extraction and processing of rare-earth minerals, and the company has used its position in the sector as a key lever as it navigates increasingly adversarial relations with the U.S., ***** an, and the European Union.
The U.S. and key allies have been making moves to reduce their dependence on Chinese rare-earth mineral supplies, but these initiatives are generally still in relatively early stages compared to what is needed. In June, China announced it was implementing export restrictions on the sale of goods and technologies to USA Rare Earth and MP Materials that could be used to support sourcing by foreign militaries.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Could this actually be a bullish catalyst for U.S.-based rare-earth companies?
While Chinese export restrictions could create moderate near-term headwinds for USA Rare Earth and MP Materials, both companies had already taken significant steps to diversify their supply chains away from relying on Chinese goods and services. In that regard, the export restrictions can be viewed as accelerating a shift that was already underway -- and as a development that could actually wind up being a positive long-term catalyst.

WASHINGTON, Aug 28 (Reuters) - U.S. officials are correcting earlier statements that several government agencies were hacked by Chinese hackers, now saying that the organizations were among the hackers' targets.
In ‌a newly edited statement, the Department of Justice said on Friday that the U.S. Senate, the Federal ‌Reserve, NASA and others were "among the targets of QTFY," a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group that officials identified on Wednesday during an internet domain seizure operation.
A previous version of the statement said the government agencies had been among the hackers' victims.
A note left at the bottom of the newly edited statement said that "Edits have been made to ensure this press release accurately reflects the government's allegations in the affidavit in support of the domain seizures."

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) hit major sales milestones in the second quarter of 2026, when it reported $28.2 billion in revenue and surpassed $100 billion in trailing revenue for the first time ever. Despite that, the sentiment around Tesla is largely negative, and its share price is down 21% this year (as of Aug. 27).
I own Tesla stock, and I have no plans of selling. Although the brand has taken a hit, Tesla still excels in several areas, and it's moving into new markets with exciting growth opportunities.
Continue »
One of the reasons I first invested in Tesla was the popularity of its cars -- I was seeing them everywhere. In 2024, and even more so in 2025, Tesla sales fell, but they have bounced back this year. It reported 480,126 vehicle deliveries in Q2 2026, a 25% year-over-year increase. Automotive revenue totaled $20.5 billion.
Tesla is the second-largest EV manufacturer after BYD. It's essentially a two-horse race at the top of the EV market, and while BYD is strong competition for Tesla internationally, it doesn't sell consumer EVs in the U.S. due to a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs.

HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) delivered an unusual combination in its fiscal third quarter: Personal Systems revenue rose 18% year over year to $11.8 billion even though unit shipments fell 16%. The divergence drew scrutiny after the company reported record third-quarter revenue and raised its fiscal 2026 outlook.
Mechanically, the reported changes imply that Personal Systems revenue per unit increased about 40%. However, that is not a clean measure of like-for-like PC pricing. The segment includes services and other attached offerings, while the quarter's mix shifted toward commercial, premium, and AI-enabled machines. HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) did not disclose a precise bridge.
The mix shift has substance. AI PCs accounted for 46% of Personal Systems shipment mix, while HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) gained 2.6 percentage points of share sequentially in premium categories and 1.8 points sequentially in workstations. Commercial products, which generally carry higher configurations than consumer PCs, generated more than 70% of segment revenue. Revenue rose 22% in commercial Personal Systems and 10% in consumer Personal Systems.
The company is also selling more around the device. Management said peripherals, collaboration products and services such as its Workforce Experience Platform contributed one-third of Personal Systems gross profit. These offerings help explain why segment revenue can rise faster than hardware units without relying entirely on price increases.
Cash generation strengthened the bull case. HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) produced $1.7 billion of operating cash flow and $1.6 billion of company-defined free cash flow, after adjustments for lease-related investment and capital spending. The company raised its fiscal-year free-cash-flow outlook to $3.0 billion to $3.2 billion.

NUWAKOT, Nepal, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Nepal and China resumed rescue operations in the flood-hit Himalayas on Friday, with a Chinese rescue team reaching the all-but-obliterated Gyirong border crossing complex for the first time and finding "nothing but ruins."
A glacier collapse on Wednesday unleashed a huge torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan mountain river systems, killing at least 579 people in Nepal ‌and seven in China's Tibet.
The number of missing in Nepal has nearly doubled to 1,924, the country's disaster authority said on Friday. At least 558 were missing in Tibet's Gyirong County, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday. ‌Of those missing in the disaster, at least 540 are foreigners, many of them Hindu pilgrims from India.
Surveillance camera footage from the worst-hit Gyirong border crossing complex showed huge torrents of water and debris engulfing buildings and people trying to flee.

For another year, there is a lot of excitement surrounding another Lincoln Riley offense. USC has some returning players who should be in for big seasons, including starting quarterback Jayden Maiava. However, Maiava will also have to bring young playmakers up to speed to help this offense be even more explosive.
Here are my X-factors for the Trojans this season on offense:
All eyes will be on Jayden Maiava. How successful can he make this offense this season? Maiava does not have Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane anymore, two guys he could just throw the football to in any coverage. This season, it will be more on Maiava to get the most out of a younger supporting cast. With all the buzz surrounding Maiava, it appears he is more than ready to take on that challenge. While his supporting cast may not be as experienced, it is still a deep and super talented group. Many different, versatile skill sets are on this year's offense. He has an exceptional running back tandem, coupled with an experienced offensive line. It is only going to get better for Maiava. I believe last season was just the start, and he will be in for a big year.
Waymond Jordan is returning from injury, but it looks like he hasn't lost a step. He has had a great camp, and he is fully healthy. Jordan will be sharing the workload with King Miller, but I believe when it comes down to finishing drives, Jordan will be the back they look to. Jordan is a bruising and physical back, so when it is time to put the ball in the end zone, that is where Jordan will specialize. I think Jordan will post double-digit touchdowns and become a very pivotal ****** et for the Trojans offense.
The Trojans do not have Makai Lemon anymore, but that does not mean they do not have a good replacement for Lemon's impact. Tanook Hines showed shades of being that type of weapon last season in the bowl game vs TCU. 6 catches for 163 yards gave great confidence that he can step up and be the number 1 target for Jayden Maiava. Maiava and Hines already have a connection, and that will be seen all season long. I think Hines will be a big reason for Jayden Maiava having a big year and the Trojans' offense to be explosive again.

SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) delivered a sharp revenue recovery in the first half of 2026, but the quality of that growth fell short of management's earlier expectations. Revenue increased 172% to €46.0 million from €16.9 million, while gross profit improved to €9.8 million from a €1.6 million loss. Gross margin reached 21.2%.
However, SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) lowered its full-year adjusted EBITDA margin outlook to 6%-9% from more than 12%. Management attributed the revision to weaker-than-expected first-half profitability and a product mix weighted toward its lower-margin Chinese business. The central question is whether stronger volume can eventually translate into dependable margins and cash generation.
The underlying performance of SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) improved substantially. Its company-defined non-IFRS adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to €0.6 million from a recalculated €11.6 million. SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) recast the prior-year figure under its current definition to exclude a €6.3 million foreign-exchange gain. Under the previously published definition, the first-half 2025 adjusted EBITDA loss was €5.3 million.
Demand also accelerated after a seasonally weak first quarter. SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) reported €96.6 million of year-to-date equipment orders through August 21, including €52.3 million received during the third quarter through that date. Equipment backlog reached €95.0 million, compared with €54.8 million at the end of June. These figures exclude service and spare-parts orders.
SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) maintained its full-year revenue target of more than €100 million and its €125 million-€150 million order-intake outlook, with management expecting the upper half of that range. Meeting the revenue target requires more than €54 million during the second half, but the larger backlog provides meaningful visibility.

JOHANNESBURG: A top State Department official has hit out at China for what **** ysts are calling "the China shock wave" effect now crippling African economies.
African manufacturing is reportedly being battered by a surge of Chinese imports. It's a triple whammy — China takes raw materials, including critical minerals, from the continent and floods Africa with state-subsidized products. And Beijing isn't importing anywhere near an equal amount of African products.
The China Global South Project reported that in 2025, Chinese exports to Africa hit $225 billion in value, whereas imports from Africa were roughly only half that — $123 billion.

SHANGHAI, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Chinese technology conglomerate Huawei plans to expand its AI cooperation with local pharmaceutical firms into ‌drug development and clinical practice, a senior executive said.
The ‌move highlights Huawei's ambitions to gain a foothold in the fast-growing AI drug discovery market, where pharmaceutical companies are investing in modelling tools and automated laboratories to shorten development timelines and improve efficiency.
"As we further deepen our research into AI in the medical field, we'll have more ‌collaboration and results emerging with pharmaceutical companies from drug manufacturing to clinical to final implementation," William Zhang, president of Huawei's healthcare business unit, told Reuters on Wednesday.
He said that Huawei had some existing collaborations in the area of clinical practice in hospitals and was exploring more opportunities, without further elaboration.
The projects now are mainly with ‌domestic drugmakers, he said.

CNBC reported on August 21, 2026, that Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) and NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) are among several major US brands that have seen their China businesses shrink over the past few years, as domestic Chinese competitors and a lack of local relevance erode market share once considered a guaranteed growth engine.
China was once the fastest-growing market for many American brands. However, Bain & Company's Aaron Cheris said the question now "isn't what's going wrong in China, it's why isn't that happening in the rest of the world," showing the problem is these brands' own strategy, not China itself.
Can Starbucks and Nike actually win back Chinese consumers, or has the moment already passed to nimbler domestic rivals?
Pixabay/Public Domain
CEO Brian Niccol created a joint venture with Boyu Capital, which holds a roughly 60% stake and aims to use its local market knowledge to revive Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX)'s China sales. Some American brands are proving the China playbook can still work: Lululemon expects about 20% China growth this year, Ralph Lauren saw 40% growth in its most recent quarter, and Kentucky Fried Chicken continues finding success in the market, showing the opportunity hasn't disappeared entirely.

"Big Short" investor Steve Eisman warned on CNBC's "Fast Money" on August 13 that OpenAI and Anthropic account for roughly 70% of AI-related revenue at Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Oracle, and as much as 25% to 35% of those companies' cloud revenue. "The futures of these massive companies, in a sense, are a bet that OpenAI and Anthropic are going to succeed," Eisman said. He called the concentration the "Achilles' heel" of the AI trade, warning that if something goes wrong at either lab, cheaper Chinese open-weight models could spark a price war across the industry. Eisman said he is not shorting the trade yet, since he wants financial data once the labs go public.
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) sit on opposite sides of that same concentration risk. Nvidia supplies the chips every AI lab needs regardless of who wins, while Palantir is betting that companies want to reduce their reliance on any single AI lab altogether.
Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR)'s results argue against it being just another concentration bet. Revenue rose 93% to $1.94 billion last quarter, beating the $1.80 billion expected. Palantir raised full-year guidance to $8.15-$8.158 billion, its largest-ever raise, the company said. U.S. commercial revenue grew 149% to $764 million, showing broad-based demand.
Palantir's sovereignty pitch carries real weight beyond marketing. CEO Alex Karp wrote that "our customers have declined to become vassal states of the language labs. Karp joined other tech leaders urging the government not to restrict open-weight AI models, widening customer choice beyond the two labs Eisman flagged.
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA)'s chips stay necessary no matter which lab wins. Every hyperscaler, OpenAI, Anthropic, and any challenger still needs Nvidia hardware. Eisman's warning centers on the labs' finances, not Nvidia's chip business itself.

Aristotle Capital Management, LLC, an investment management company, released its "Value Equity Fund" Q2 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The Fund delivered a 4.32% total return in Q2 2026, underperforming the 13.87% gain for the Russell 1000 Value Index and the 15.20% return for the S&P 500, while its 1.99% year-to-date return also lagged the Russell 1000 Value Index's 16.26% and the S&P 500's 10.21%. The Fund attributed the performance gap largely to limited exposure to the AI infrastructure spending boom, noting that the U.S. has about 4,000 existing data centers and nearly 3,000 more planned or under construction, while AI-related demand has created bottlenecks in processors and memory. The letter highlighted the scale of the cycle, with industry cash flows in key AI hardware areas rising sharply, while the Russell 1000 Value Index's top 10 contributors gained an average 182% year to date and accounted for 9.29 percentage points of the index's 16.23% return. Looking ahead, the fund expects investors to eventually reassess the sustainability of current AI infrastructure earnings and valuations. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Aristotle Value Equity Fund highlighted stocks like QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM). QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) develops wireless technologies and semiconductor solutions powering smartphones, automotive systems, and connected devices worldwide. The one-month return of QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) was 11.63% while its shares traded between $121.99 and $259.92 over the last 52 weeks. On August 27, 2026, QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock closed at approximately $163.72 per share, with a market capitalization of about $176.00 billion.
Aristotle Value Equity Fund stated the following regarding QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), a leading semiconductor and communications technology company, was the largest contributor for the quarter. Shares recovered as management indicated that the inventory adjustments and production constraints resulting from higher memory costs were progressing largely as expected and that handset revenues from Chinese customers were expected to reach a bottom. As we noted last quarter, we believed these headwinds to be cyclical rather than structural and did not alter our long-term investment thesis. The company also continued to make progress on its long-term strategy of evolving from a handset-centric company into a broader provider of connected computing technologies. Automotive revenue reached another record high, while Internet of Things (IoT) and newer businesses such as AI-enabled PCs, industrial applications, and data center computing continue to represent a growing portion of the company and remain central to its long-term diversification strategy. LOS ANGELES — The sun shines almost every day in America's largest college football city, but there never seems to be enough for both of its power conference programs at the same time. In the recent history of the USC-UCLA rivalry, there is almost always a gray cloud hovering somewhere.
Against significant odds given what's happened the last two seasons, UCLA has managed to blow it out of Westwood. It's largely thanks to new coach Bob Chesney, the relentlessly positive and perfectly coiffed 49-year-old who won at a bunch of small schools in the Northeast you've never heard of before taking James Madison to the College Football Playoff last season. Before even coaching a game, he has managed to convince UCLA's administration, its boosters and most importantly its players that he can do the exact same thing on the West Coast.
"When you do your research on him, you see that he's a winner," said senior linebacker Jalen Woods, who has played for the same number of head coaches (three) as UCLA won games last season. "It's not his first rodeo."
It's not quite the same vibe across town, where the patina of endless possibility has eroded over the last 4 1/2 years into a new and urgent reality for Lincoln Riley.
When Southern Cal pulled off a middle-of-the-night shocker to lure him out of Oklahoma at the end of the 2021 season, administrators believed — and with good reason — that they had imported a national championship-level coach who would quickly usher in a long era of dominance on the West Coast.

HANOI, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Vietnam said on Friday it strongly opposed all foreign activities in the Paracels archipelago in ‌the disputed South China Sea, following a report earlier this ‌week of new Chinese construction on an islet there.
Reuters reported on Tuesday that new installations had been sighted on Yagong Island, called Ba Ba Island by Vietnam, citing satellite imagery, with security **** ysts saying it could be the start of an early-warning radar facility.
"Vietnam resolutely opposes this, ‌has made serious representations and affirmed its position on the matter, and demands an immediate end to such activities and that they not be repeated," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang told Reuters in an emailed statement.
China has occupied the Paracel Islands since 1974, when it seized them from the navy of the former South ‌Vietnam. Vietnam, which claims the entire grouping as its own, has moved in recent years to expand its own network of bases in the Spratlys, which lie further south.
The Spratlys and nearby waters are also claimed, fully or in part, by Vietnam, the Philippines, ‌Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

Hayden Capital, an investment management firm, released its second-quarter 2026 investment letter. The letter can be downloaded here. In the second quarter, the portfolio gained 6.9%, compared to the S&P 500's 15.2%. Overall, approximately 34% of the portfolio is in Asia, 43% in North America, and the rest spread across other regions. Hayden Capital remains guided by a strategy focused on high-quality franchises with stable earnings power, continuing to invest despite this year's challenging results. Their largest investments are experiencing over 40% revenue growth yet are trading at similar valuations to the broader market, indicating potential for future outperformance. The recent market corrections in AI investments have prompted a healthier perspective among investors, emphasizing the importance of strong business fundamentals. Companies are leaning towards partnerships with AI firms rather than outright replacements, ensuring better access to data and operational efficiency. Six months into the "SaaS-pocalypse," software incumbents remain resilient despite initial fears of disruption. While AI is indeed transformative, the anticipated rapid changes in markets have not materialized as quickly as expected. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Hayden Capital highlighted PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD). PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) is a multinational commerce group that owns and operates Pinduoduo and Temu platforms. On August 27, 2026, PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) closed at $84.69 per share. Over the past month, PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) returned 2.69%, while its shares have declined 28.31% in the last 52 weeks. PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) has a market capitalization of $120.55 billion.
Hayden Capital stated the following regarding PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD): Four years ago, China was still in the middle of its "zero-covid" policy, with city-wide lock-downs. US-China tensions were running high with many US institutions dumping their Chinese investments, and China's economic health remained highly uncertain.
It was against this background, that we originally invested in Pinduoduo in 2022. I believed the market was misunderstanding the company and the operating leverage inherent in the model.

PENGHU, Taiwan, Aug 28 (Reuters) - In the pre-dawn darkness on an island in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwanese troops earlier this month pulled long, gleaming 105mm shells from their green plastic canisters. After all the ammunition had been checked and safely loaded through hatches on four tanks, troops waited silently for the order to fire.
(Read the story on Reuters.com: )
The soldiers are among the thousands of troops that form a garrison on the Penghu Islands and they are training for war with China. If Beijing decides to attack, they will be on Taiwan's frontline.
A popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches and coral ‌reefs, this strategically crucial cluster of 90 islands and islets, about 50 km off the southwest coast of the main island of Taiwan, would be hit in the first wave of an attempted Chinese invasion, according to senior Taiwanese security officials and military experts.

On paper, before the 2026 college football season kicks off, the Oregon Ducks have the best offense in the Big Ten, better than USC, and maybe the whole sport. Dante Moore is primed to be the first quarterback taken in the upcoming NFL draft, and he has an embarrassment of riches to throw the ball to. The Oregon Ducks' receiver room is completely stacked with versatile weapons in Dakorien Moore, Evan Stewart, and Jeremiah McClellan. The Ducks also have two tight ends who can be better than last year's first-round draft pick, Kenyon Sadiq.
To complement that, Oregon has an elite run game once again. That sounds promising, and Oregon will be headed for offensive dominance. However, the USC Trojans have both a potential elite passing attack and run game.
Here is my hot take of the week, for game week for the USC Trojans:
Waymond Jordan and King Miller have their own case for best backfield in college football. Both backs have the potential to run for 1,000 yards. The Trojans' offensive line will be better and more experienced than last year, setting both backs up for great success.
Jayden Maiava is also set up for great success with an embarrassment of riches in pass catchers too, just like Moore. Maiava has a handful of freshman playmakers who can be special early. Mark Bowman and ***** ie Feaster will become top targets for Maiava right out of the gate. With Tanook Hines healthy now, Maiava will have his Makai Lemon replacement.

Your lasting memory of him is likely watching from a television angle behind his back and seeing his smooth pitching motion produce a fastball that ESPN registered at 82 mph.

Xiaomi Corporation (OTC:XIACF) is no longer content to compete through hardware design and pricing alone. The Chinese smartphone maker has unveiled the Xring O3, which is the second generation of its proprietary handset processor, as it seeks greater control over the technology powering its devices.
The strategy could improve product differentiation and bolster Xiaomi's negotiating position with outside chip suppliers, all the while supporting its expansion into premium smartphones. However, the investment comes as rising component costs and weakening global handset demand are already pressuring the company's core business. Let's dive deeper into it.
Developing processors internally could give Xiaomi greater control over several features that influence the smartphone experience. A system-on-chip integrates computing, graphics, artificial intelligence processing, and imaging functions, allowing the company to optimize important capabilities around its own hardware and software. Xiaomi launched its first proprietary smartphone processor, the Xring O1, in 2025. During its latest earnings call, the company said ******* ulative shipments of O1-powered smartphones, tablets, and watches had surpassed one million units. Although Reuters' sources estimated that only approximately 150,000 of those shipments were smartphones, the broader total shows Xiaomi has already deployed the technology across multiple product categories.
The O3 could also support Xiaomi's push into more expensive devices. According to two people familiar with the plans, TSMC will manufacture the processor using its 3-nanometre technology. One source said the chip is expected to power Xiaomi's next flagship foldable phone, with shipments targeted at between 200,000 and 300,000 units. Foldables offer Xiaomi an opportunity to compete more directly in a premium category currently dominated in China by Huawei. Huawei shipped 1.6 million foldable smartphones in China during the second quarter, accounting for 68% of the market, according to data cited by Reuters.
The company's ambitions also extend beyond smartphones. Reuters reported that Xiaomi contracted TSMC to produce the Xring O100, a 6-nanometre neural-processing chip designed to support its MiMo artificial-intelligence model on consumer devices, and the Xring D100, a 3-nanometre autonomous-driving processor. Xiaomi said both chips have completed development and are scheduled for deployment next year. Together, these projects show that Xiaomi is extending its chip-development strategy beyond smartphones into AI-enabled consumer devices and autonomous driving.

Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) is making another aggressive move to strengthen its position in the global artificial intelligence (AI) race, and its recently reported $6 billion licensing deal with AI startup Poolside could prove strategically important, along with $1 billion in equity investment.
The agreement gives Nvidia access to Poolside's AI model-development technology and brings more than 100 engineers into its Nemotron effort, as the chipmaker looks to accelerate open-weight AI models that can compete with increasingly capable Chinese alternatives such as DeepSeek and Kimi.

On August 11, 2026, Sony Group Corporation (NYSE:SONY) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) agreed to form a $4.7 billion joint venture to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors for smartphones. Mass production is expected to begin in 2029.
Why This Matters
Sony is trying to limit its own capital spending on next-generation chip manufacturing while still capturing AI-era demand for camera "eyes" in machines.
So does partnering with TSMC give Sony the best of both worlds, or does it mean sharing a strategic manufacturing edge with a partner that also serves every other chip customer in the world?
Sony Group Corporation (NYSE:SONY) will be the venture's sole controlling shareholder and will lead development of core image-sensor technology and product design, contributing about $2.92 billion partly by transferring its newly built **** amoto chip factory. The structure is designed specifically to limit Sony's own capital spending while positioning it to capture rising demand for the "eyes" of machines as AI adoption grows. The companies are also counting on **** anese government support to help fund the venture's full planned capacity.

"Big Short" famed investor Michael Burry has moved his investment from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding (BABA) to its prime rival JD.com (JD). However, rather than buying JD.com on a trigger, Burry did so mostly because Alibaba has become too expensive. He argued that Alibaba would need to "fall by half" for him to be interested again. Moreover, the famous investor disliked Alibaba's capital raise for AI capabilities and infrastructure investment.
On the other hand, JD.com has emerged as his preference in this paradigm. The company is showing signs of improvement, especially in its bottom line. Moreover, it is trying to expand its operations. For instance, it recently won a newly awarded pilot development area in Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis (a mega-project bordering Mainland China), in a JV with six companies. JD.com also plans to invest RMB 10 billion in resources to the robotics sector by 2028.

Artificial intelligence has spent years fueling fears that machines could replace American workers. But the AI boom is creating another problem altogether: the U.S. may not have enough people to power it.
As tech companies race to build data centers and utilities expand the transmission lines and power plants needed to keep them running, demand is surging for electricians, engineers and construction workers. The trouble is that many of those workers are already in short supply and a sizable share are nearing retirement.

HOLLYWOOD, CA - SEPTEMBER 30: Voiceover actor Peter Cullen at the Optimus Prime hand and footprint ceremony held at TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX on September 30, 2014 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images)
Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor whose deep, measured baritone gave Optimus Prime his voice across four decades of the Transformers franchise, died at his Los Angeles home He was 85. No cause of death was confirmed, and the passing was first reported by TMZ.
His family said in a statement, "Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and always remember: be strong enough to be gentle."
That last phrase — "be strong enough to be gentle" — was the advice Cullen's brother Larry gave him when he auditioned for the role of Optimus Prime in 1984. Cullen based the character's voice on Larry, a Marine veteran, deciding that a true leader's strength should carry warmth rather than aggression. The audition won him the long-running role.
Cullen's animation career began well before Transformers, voicing characters across Pac-Man, Rainbow Brite, Voltron, The Addams Family, and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers as Monterey Jack, and provided the vocal effects of the Predator in the ep 1987 film of the same name. He was also the voice of Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh properties for years, a role he described as among his favourites. Disney later turned to Brad Garrett for a couple of 2018 productions, though Cullen remained the character's primary voice elsewhere.

On August 14, AirJoule Technologies (NASDAQ:AIRJ) reported second-quarter results that arrived alongside a striking backdrop: state governments are now blocking new data centers over water use, and AirJoule sells machines that make water out of thin air. The company posted a net loss of $8.5 million, mostly noncash, while laying out how tightening water rules in New York, Texas and California are turning into sales opportunities rather than obstacles. It is a story about regulation reshaping demand before the revenue has caught up.
New York enacted a moratorium on data center permits above 50 megawatts, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott paused new grid-connected data center approvals pending a water audit, according to CEO Matt Jore. California's own water supply strategy projects the state could lose 10% of its water supply by 2040 due to hotter, drier conditions, and any residential project of 500 units or more there now needs written proof of a 20-year water supply just to get a permit. Texas faces a similar squeeze: state water plans point to a 10% decline in supply by 2080 even as the population is expected to grow 53% in that span. AirJoule's answer is a system that pulls distilled water from humidity using low-grade waste heat, sidestepping municipal supply entirely.
That pitch just found a distribution channel. In July, AirJoule signed an exclusive sales agreement with Kubota Corporation covering residential developments in Texas and California, with two Core systems set to deploy near Corpus Christi and in Irvine this quarter. The company is also stacking up validation: a Core unit is running as a showcase at GE Vernova's new Frontier campus in Niskayuna, New York, another shipped to Expo City Dubai after AirJoule won one of the UAE's first Expo City green licenses, and the first Prime unit is headed to Europe to demonstrate data center waste-heat recovery for Net Zero Innovation Hub members including Google and Microsoft. Corporate cash stood at $41.4 million as of June 30, and combined with the joint venture's balance, AirJoule holds $43 million with zero debt.
That $8.5 million net loss included $5.1 million in noncash charges tied to the rising fair value of earnout and vesting share liabilities, a reminder that the balance sheet is exposed to swings that have nothing to do with operations. More tangibly, AirJoule raised its 2026 cash spend guidance to $27 million to $28 million, up from an earlier $25 million estimate, because commercialization is moving faster than planned. The joint venture alone burned $5 million in operating expenses during the quarter and needed another $2.5 million capital contribution from AirJoule to keep manufacturing and pilot work funded.
