Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars premiered on September 15, 2026.
Each week, the stars and their pro partners collaborate on costumes that complement the theme and style of their dances.
InStyle looks back at 13 of the best Dancing With the Stars fashion moments throughout the years.
You may think you're simply reaching the age when Dancing With the Stars starts catering to you, but the long-running competition series is having a major moment in general. So, no matter your age, it makes sense if you've suddenly found yourself completely engrossed in the celebrity-meets-dance-pro spectacle (and keeping who's delivering a perfect 10 each week).
Of course, the choreography is only part of the fun. The themed costumes are often just as entertaining as the dances themselves, with every performance bringing a new opportunity for sequins, fringe, feathers, sheer fabrics, and plenty of sparkle. And when Disney Night, Halloween Night, or the freestyle round rolls around, you can pretty much count on the wardrobe department pulling out all the stops. Depending on the dance and its theme, contestants can transform from Old Hollywood starlets in sweeping gowns to disco divas dripping in rhinestones—and sometimes undergo multiple transitions in a single episode.

Carol Burnett is remembering longtime costume designer Robert Gordon "Bob" Mackie.
The legendary comedic actress, in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday, Sept. 14, called the fashion icon a "genius."
"Sadness doesn't come close to how I feel. I loved him very much," she wrote. "As for his genius, there are fashion designers who don't do costumes and there are costume designers who don't do fashion. Bob did it all. There was no one like him."
Burnett, 93, and Mackie, who died Sept. 14 at age 87, were longtime collaborators, starting in 1967 with his work on "The Carol Burnett Show."

NEW YORK (AP) — Bob Mackie, the fashion designer whose visually provocative Hollywood style defined glamour for the 1970s — including putting Carol Burnett in some of her kookiest getups and Cher in her raciest ones — died Monday. He was 87.
"He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do," a read statement on his social media accounts. "His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
Dubbed the "Designer to the Stars," Mackie won nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and was nominated for three Oscars, including one for Barbra Streisand's "Funny Lady," in which she wore a sheer batwing gown. He was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Science's Hall of Fame in 2002.
He designed gowns for Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Stone, Diana Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and concert costumes for Pink. When Marilyn Monroe delivered a breathy, seductive take on "Happy Birthday" at a fundraiser for President John F. Kennedy and the Democratic National Committee, she did it in a sheer, beaded gown that Mackie dreamed up in a sketch.
His influence can be seen in the styles of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. His archival pieces are worn today by the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy, Miley Cyrus and Zendaya, the latter who wore a Mackie gown to honor Cher at the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. When Taylor Swift wanted to look like a showgirl on the cover of her 2025 album "The Life of a Showgirl," she turned to some Mackie originals.

Legendary music and film fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie died Monday at the age of 87. His team confirmed his passing on his official Instagram page. The cause of death is still unconfirmed.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," the post announced. "He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
Born in 1939 in Monterey Park, California, Mackie is best known for designing iconic costumes for musical stars like Cher, Elton John, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. He was raised throughout most of his youth by his maternal grandparents after his parents divorced when he was just two years old. He eventually began living with his father after he moved to Rosemead, California, where he attended Rosemead High School.
Mackie left Chouinard Art Institute early after he was hired to sketch for Frank Thompson at Paramount Studios. He spent part of the early 1960s working at the studio as an ****** istant designer under Ray Aghayan. He scored his first big break when Mitzi Gaynor hired him to create the costumes for her Las Vegas Revue. He continued to be a go-to collaborator for Gaynor over the years and raked in Emmys for his contributions to her 1976 and 1978 TV specials.
He became even more well-known in the Hollywood scene in the late 1960s and through the late 1970s for his work as the costume designer for "The Carol Burnett Show," which asked him to design upwards of 50 costumes a week. It was on the set of that iconic sketch variety series that Mackie met Cher. He went on to serve as the costume designer for "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" and continued to design pieces for the star in the decades that followed.

Kristen Stewart has spent much of her life in front of cameras, yet fame has never made performing feel completely ordinary to her. Acting requires someone to become another person while an audience watches, an experience Stewart has described as inherently strange. Public appearances can bring a similar sense of discomfort, but one area where she has developed a distinctive identity is fashion. Rather than treating clothes as a carefully calculated part of celebrity life, Stewart prefers to trust her instincts. That approach has helped make her style recognizable both on the red carpet and on screen.
Stewart's relationship with fashion has also been shaped by her long ****** ociation with Chanel. Although glamorous gowns and designer looks frequently accompany major premieres and events, she does not believe every outfit needs to be worn simply because it appears fashionable. If something feels wrong, she would rather change direction. For Stewart, discomfort can become visible, so confidence comes from choosing clothing that feels authentic. Her willingness to mix elegance with a more relaxed personal style has become part of her public image.
That philosophy took on a different meaning when Stewart played Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín's 2021 film Spencer. The movie imagines Diana during a tense Christmas gathering with the British royal family as she struggles with her marriage and the expectations surrounding her position. Stewart found that the costumes were far more than beautiful recreations of royal fashion. They helped establish the emotional reality of the character and provided another way to understand the pressure Diana experienced.
Stewart described Diana's clothing as capable of communicating dramatically different emotions. At certain moments, an outfit could feel restrictive, almost like a form of confinement. At others, the same world of carefully chosen clothing could provide confidence and strength. Through research, Stewart noticed how Diana's personality could remain visible even when she appeared uncomfortable with what she was wearing. Instead of disappearing beneath the clothes, Diana could project an unmistakable energy through them. That observation became useful for Stewart as she searched for a believable interpretation rather than simply attempting an imitation.
Stewart and Diana both experienced extraordinary levels of public attention, but Stewart has resisted easy comparisons between their lives. What connects them more meaningfully in Spencer is the importance of individuality under intense scrutiny. For Stewart, clothing became one of several tools for exploring that conflict. Her instinctive approach to personal fashion may reject anything that feels unnatural, but acting sometimes requires exactly the opposite. An uncomfortable costume can reveal something essential about a character, turning fashion from decoration into a powerful part of storytelling.

The Boston Tea Party wasn't really about the tea, and it certainly wasn't about the Mohawks though those were the costumes the colonists wore as they dumped the boxes overboard.
In Tuesday's Democratic Senate primary in deep blue Massachusetts, longtime Sen. Ed Markey is harking back to those revolutionary roots as he pitches himself to voters as the anti-establishment candidate against Rep. Seth Moulton – despite arriving to Washington just three years after Joe Biden did in 1973.
Although the language of the left-wing insurgency surrounds the race, under the surface, the contest for many appears to be less about ideological issues or governing philosophies than a smash-up of ambition, efforts to secure Democratic power in the state in the future, and personal pique.
Sen. Ed Markey speaks during a Get Out the Vote event, Saturday, August 29, 2026 in Boston. - Mark Stockwell/AP
Markey, 80, in one corner, is vowing to keep fighting for left-wing ideals, which include some successes and some that he hasn't passed in all his years in power so far. In the other, Moulton, the 47-year-old decorated Marine and six-term congressman who has frustrated Nancy Pelosi and many other Democrats by repeatedly challenging their leadership, has staked his campaign on generational change.

Sydney Sweeney dressed up as Wonder Woman in a daring latex-inspired costume for a recent getaway, while her boyfriend, Scooter Braun, coordinated as Superman. But instead of praising the couple's superhero-themed looks, some fans called the costumes "weird" and "cheap."
In an Instagram photo dump shared on August 22, the Euphoria actress gave followers a glimpse into her "Camp '26" getaway, which featured waterside obstacle courses, karaoke, boat rides, jet skiing and more.
The first photo showed the 28-year-old posing in a revealing red PVC-style Wonder Woman costume with a sweetheart neckline. The outfit featured a silver rope detail around the faux belt, while she completed the look with Wonder Woman's signature gold tiara.

In the mirror selfie, Sweeney held up her phone to take the photo while Braun, 45, stood behind her in a Superman costume, although the top of his head was cut off from the frame.

Sydney Sweeney channelled one of television's most iconic superheroes as she slipped into a plunging Wonder Woman costume for a fun-filled getaway with boyfriend Scooter Braun.
The Euphoria star, 28, looked sensational in the strapless red, blue and gold ensemble, which appeared to take its inspiration from the costume worn by Lynda Carter in the classic 1970s television series.
Sydney completed her transformation with Wonder Woman's signature gold tiara, metallic cuffs and knee-high red boots, wearing her blonde hair loose around her shoulders.

Scooter, 45, joined in the fun by dressing as Superman in a skintight blue unitard emblazoned with the superhero's unmistakable red and yellow emblem. The music mogul posed proudly alongside Sydney as the couple showed off their coordinating DC Comics costumes.

Cher's iconic outfits, spanning decades, have solidified her status as a celebrated style icon.
Signature looks include the 1974 "naked dress" at the Met Gala and crop tops before they were trendy.
In 2024, Cher stunned at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and celebrated her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.
There's no denying that Cher has remained a style icon in a league of her own across decades. Rising to fame in the 1960s, fans got their first taste of Cher's extravagant costumes on The Sonny and Cher Show. While it's clear that she's always been a performer, her outfits have been just as captivating and compelling as her vocals.
Beyond the stage, Cher has built a reputation for pushing fashion boundaries, especially on red carpets. From her show-stopping dazzling outfits to her risky sheer, skin-baring styles, Cher is a walking masterclass in how to make a fashion statement guaranteed to get people's attention. And while the musical diva has paved the way for music stars to be seen as fashion icons, she credits her most memorable outfits to her longtime designer, Bob Mackie.

Nicole Kidman is known for her best films like Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge and The Hours but, in recent years, she has also become known for being memed on the internet. From her bizarre reaction to Tweety Bird being brought up on a podcast to her very earnest AMC commercials that have inspired Halloween costumes, Kidman is one of the internet's favorite reaction GIFs. Now. she's humorously discussing one of her most memed Oscars moments, and I love hearing her side of the story.
Kidman and Lioness co-star Zoe Saldaña recently sat down for a Lie Detector interview with Vanity Fair. While promoting the much-waited Lioness Season 3, the duo asked each other questions to get their full honest perspectives on their pop culture presences. Saldaña asked Kidman about the viral video of her awkwardly clapping at the Oscars, to which Kidman said she'd never used this popular clip in her own correspondence with her friends, yet did give some insight into why she was clapping like that. She said:
I've seen one where I was clapping at the Academy Awards like that and my hands were…. I've seen that and I was like, 'Why am I clapping like that?' But I had very expensive jewelry on and I didn't want to destroy it.

There are movies that we love, and then there are movies that become embedded in the cultural zeitgeist and hit us right in the heart. Julie Andrews is breathing rare air as an actor who has more than one such film to her credit. "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins," for examples, have dazzled generations of audiences. But it wasn't only Andrews' movies that delivered that fairy tale dreaminess. She married set and costume designer Tony Walton in May 1959 in beautiful Surrey, England, and get this: Walton designed her wedding dress. While most brides would hesitate to trust their husbands-to-be with the hors d'oeuvres, Andrews charged Walton with the pièce de résistance. He tackled the task beautifully, because his bride looked stunning in her sleeved ballgown, embroidered with floral appliqués — and leave it to Andrews to showcase how to style a pixie cut for every occasion.
Hulton Deutsch/Getty
The two met as theater kids in 1948, became pen pals, and got engaged 11 years later. "We looked at each other and smiled, and I honestly don't know how it came about, but one of us whispered to the other, 'We should get married soon,'" Andrews wrote in her memoir "Home," as reported by Tatler. And when Disney snagged Andrews for "Mary Poppins," Walton came with to design the costumes. The couple would have one daughter, Emma, in 1962. Thanks in large part to Walton's gorgeous design, his and Andrews' wedding snaps are some of those throwback pics from Old Hollywood star weddings that are beyond captivating.

The best comedy team on television today might just reside in the world of sports. I am talking about Gary Striewski and Randy Scott on ESPN’s SportsCenter: AM. Striewski and Scott embrace a similar strain of mischievous humor. Both have made names for themselves at ESPN separately, but when paired together, they create the kind of special chemistry that rarely happens on television.
SportsCenter anchors have long been known for sarcasm, humor, raised-eyebrow commentary, and general wisecracking, but Striewski and Scott take it to another level. From props and costumes to ribald humor, they are certainly a unique duo. Striewski and Scott have no envelope to push and no lines to cross. The result is a freewheeling and creative version of SportsCenter unlike any other. They are still decked out in suits and ties, but that’s where their similarities to other SportsCenter anchors end.
Striewski and Scott sound different and approach sports differently. Their whimsical, carefree style is ideal for the morning time slot. Great comedic teams play off each other, and Striewski and Scott are no exception. Their deadpan humor and spontaneous wit are highly effective.
On SportsCenter: AM, you truly get the feeling that neither anchor knows what the other is going to do or say next. SportsCenter: AM is scripted, of course, but with this pair, a sharp swerve away from that script is inevitable. If something quirky comes up in a highlight or sound bite, Striewski or Scott jumps all over it.
They remind me of two contemporary late-night talk show hosts: Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Fallon.

Anne Schedeen, known for her role on the '80s sitcom ALF, has died.
On Sunday, a representative for the actress announced via Facebook that she had "passed peacefully". Schedeen was 77.
A cause of death was not disclosed.
"She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of creative energy, whip smart humor, delight in her family, adoration for little dogs, burning hatred for (U.S. President Donald) Trump, passion for second-hand thrifting, and love for a good story. We are bereft without her. We loved her so so much, as did all who met her," they wrote.
"She was a force. And it is unimaginable to think about life without her in it. But as she said, 'I'm always with you.' And she's right. The memories, artwork, belly laughter, handmade jewelry, oil paintings, sculptures, costumes, and all-around joie de vivre live on."
To conclude, the family asked that fans "raise a margarita in her honor".
Schedeen launched her career in 1974, going on to land roles in shows such as Three's Company, Paper Dolls, and Cheers.

Thousands of people gathered along one of Mexico City's main avenues on Saturday in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest human wave.
Aerial footage showed participants raising their arms in unison as the wave stretched for nearly a kilometre through the capital.
