Accepting the $1M gift eliminates nearly 7% interest on a jumbo mortgage, delivering an immediate risk-free return that rivals most market strategies.
The new $15M lifetime gift exemption lets the in-laws transfer the full $1M immediately tax-free, requiring only a Form 709 filing.
An intrafamily loan at the 3.72% IRS minimum rate saves roughly 3 percentage points versus the current 6.9% jumbo mortgage rate.

People who pursue a FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) philosophy aggressively save and invest with a goal of retiring young enough to enjoy the freedom that a substantial nest egg affords. A fatFIRE adherent aims to accumulate a seven- or eight-figure retirement portfolio, enabling a lifestyle that ordinary early retirement budgets cannot support. When a couple's in-laws share those fatFIRE values, the relationship tends to run smoothly. But good intentions packaged as sizable financial gifts can shift that balance quickly, and without diplomacy and a shared strategy, even a generous offer can quietly fracture family dynamics.

The maximum 2026 Social Security benefit is $5,181/month, requiring 35+ years earning at or above the $184,500 wage cap and claiming at 70.
Most workers can't hit the wage cap, but delaying Social Security to 70 and boosting salary through job-hopping raises your benefit meaningfully.
Combining a $2,500 monthly Social Security benefit with $32,000 in annual IRA or 401(k) withdrawals can match the maximum benefit's $62,000 yearly income.

A widow who stays as beneficiary on her late husband's IRA avoids roughly $172,000 in forced taxable income over four years before his RMD clock starts.
Filing single cuts her Medicare IRMAA threshold in half to $109,000, so a $40,650 RMD alone can trigger $974 in extra annual Part B premiums.
Contributing to or missing a required distribution from the inherited IRA permanently strips away the deferral option the IRS otherwise allows surviving spouses.

Consider a combined case. A 74-year-old widow's husband dies this year at 68, and she's the sole beneficiary of his $1 million traditional IRA. The custodian's spousal claim form offers to move the money into an IRA in her own name, and that looks like the tidy choice.

A $310,000 taxable gain from selling an S&P 500 fund pushes a single filer's MAGI to $390,000, triggering $6,355 in annual Medicare IRMAA surcharges two years later.
Selling all at once costs $13,575 in combined surcharges and investment taxes, which is cheaper than splitting the sale over two or three years due to compounding IRMAA brackets.
Rebalancing stocks to bonds inside a traditional or Roth IRA avoids MAGI impact entirely, since those trades never appear on Form 1040.

Consider a hypothetical 68-year-old who bought an S&P 500 index fund in a taxable brokerage account in 1996. He now wants less stock risk and plans to sell and move into bonds. The 10-year Treasury yielded 4.91% on November 2, so the switch looks reasonable. For a sense of scale, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) has risen 466.8% in price since November 1999 alone.

Single retirees with provisional income above $34,000 face federal taxes on up to 85% of their Social Security benefits.
Provisional income combines your AGI, tax-exempt interest, and 50% of your annual Social Security benefit to determine your tax exposure.
Roth IRA withdrawals are excluded from AGI, potentially reducing provisional income to zero and shielding Social Security from federal taxes entirely.

NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory met a fiery end on Wednesday morning, nearly 22 years after it launched to study the most powerful explosions in the universe.
Data from the US ******* e Force estimates the 3,200-pound ******* ecraft plunged into Earth’s atmosphere over Indonesia around 7:39 a.m. ET.
While most of the observatory was expected to burn up as it blazed through the thick inner band of Earth’s atmosphere, NASA predicted some pieces of the vehicle would survive.

California voters rejected the billionaire tax on Tuesday by a wide margin. Election-night returns counted by The Center Square showed Prop. 40 losing 56.5% to 43.5%, with 68.5% of precincts partially reporting. The 2027 Social Security COLA of 3.6% is already locked, and the gap versus 3.7% headline inflation amounts to roughly $2 a month for average retirees.
Medicare Part B premiums are deducted directly from Social Security checks, and rising premiums can significantly shrink the net benefit of any COLA raise.
Retirees should wait for their December Social Security notice before committing to new fixed costs, since it shows the real net deposit after deductions.

Thursday night's primetime matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers had a unplanned pause during the third quarter. With the Packers holding the ball while leading 20-10, the game was interrupted for several minutes as a result of a passing drone, according to the Amazon Prime broadcast.
The unauthorized drone had breached the edge of the stadium, leading the referees to pause the game for safety reasons. Per the broadcast, the teams were told to head back to their respective sidelines while they waited for the drone to leave, with the delay lasting several minutes.
Under Federal Aviation Admisitration (FAA) rules, drones are not allowed within three nautical miles of any stadium with more than 30,000 seats, with NFL games specifically mentioned in the guidelines; Green Bay's Lambeau Field has a capacity of 81,441. The rules for drones and model airplanes apply starting one hour before the game until one hour after.
Luckily, the Packers made sure the delay was worth it: On the very next play, quarterback Jordan Love found Josh Jacobs for a touchdown reception to give Green Bay a 27-10 lead.
This story will be updated.

In a housing market where affordability is increasingly out of reach for many buyers, Vic Bulbon is looking at a type of property that's becoming less expensive: condominiums.
With national home prices near record highs and mortgage rates topping 7% in recent weeks, buying a home remains out of reach for many Americans. Condos appear to offer a rare bright spot, with prices falling across the country.
But even with cheaper sales prices, rising homeowners' **** ociation (HOA) fees and one-time special **** sments are driving up ownership costs.
Now, guidelines released this year by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored agencies that back nearly half of all US home purchases, aim to reduce the financial and structural risks of condo buildings. Real estate agents told CNN that the changes could add pressure to the condo market by further driving up HOA fees, increasing the total monthly bill for condo owners, and potentially eroding the savings of a lower purchase price.
As of mid-October, condo sales prices lagged behind single-family home prices in 99 of the 100 largest markets in the United States, according to data from financial services company Intercontinental Exchange provided to CNN. Nationally, single-family home prices rose 1.5% from a year earlier, while condo prices fell 1.1%.

For an average single person planning to stop working at 64, a $1.2 million 401(k) account and $2,800 Social Security benefit could provide enough income to make ends meet during retirement. Widely used guidelines suggest your annual income may be around $81,600, which may or may not be more than your annual expenses. Much depends on individual circumstances, including the kind of retirement lifestyle you desire, your location and future trends of inflation, taxes and investment returns. To get a comprehensive workup of your retirement budget, take the question to a financial advisor.
Income and expenses represent the two sides of your retirement budget. Both are equally important and decisions you make regarding either can affect the overall accuracy and dependability of the budget.
You can estimate expenses by using averages for typical retirees or by considering specifics of your situation with estimate for categories such as housing, healthcare and taxes. Similarly, you can estimate future income with general guidelines or by accounting for specifics such as your personal investment preferences.
In your case, we'll start with income since we have information about that. Despite the possibility that Social Security benefits will be cut by about 20% after 2035, your $2,800 Social Security benefit can probably be relied upon. And benefits are indexed to a cost-of-living benchmark, providing protection against inflation.
Note, however, that if you wait to claim benefits, your monthly amount will increase every year until you are 70. By claiming at age 64 rather than waiting until your full retirement age of 67, you are receiving 20% less. If you wait until age 70, you'll get 24% more than at 67. And you'll receive the higher amount, adjusted annually for cost of living, as long as you live.

We now have a better idea of exactly who the biggest creators are on social media. ESHAP and What's Trending have partnered to unveil the second annual Creator Map, a guide to the biggest creators by platform. And TheWrap has your first look at their findings.
The Creator Map will be unveiled later today at the first Jupiter Festival Miami, which is sponsored by YouTube. Evan Shapiro, media cartographer and ESHAP founder and CEO; Shira Lazar, What's Trending founder and CEO; and Jon Goss, CEO of the Lighthouse will unveil the project on the main stage of the event.
Described as the "definitive visual guide to the creator ecosphere," the Creator Map offers a data-informed view of the creator economy, an industry that can often feel confusing and chaotic from an outsider perspective. For the first time, the top 200 creators across Instagram, YouTube and TikTok will have both their follower counts and Affinity Quotient scores published on the map. Sponsored by Whalar Group and with data powered by Whalar's creator operating system Foam, the Affinity Quotient measures the depth of audience engagement and places a greater emphasis on active signals such as shares and saves than on passive interactions. That's an important insight as engagement rather than follower count has become the top metric in the creator economy. The Creator Affinity 100 list was first presented at this this year's IBC and identified 100 creators generating the greatest affinity among their audiences.
The map also identifies top creators across Snap, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Twitch, Pinterest and Rumble, along with the top Substack publishers and podcasters. Additionally, it identifies some of the top agencies, studios, technology tools, payment platforms and other companies powering the creator ecosystem. Check it out below:

The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.31% as of October 5, 2026, the high of the past month. Any dividend stock has to clear that bar. The five names below try to clear it with cash flow that comes from contracts: decades-long triple-net leases, monthly wireless and fiber bills, and fee-based pipeline volumes. Dividend safety comes first in each entry. A big yield only counts when the payout is covered, the balance sheet can carry it, and the dividend record shows how management acts under pressure.
VICI Properties (NYSE:VICI) offers a forward dividend of $1.84 annualized. At a share price of $22.62, that works out to a very high yield of 8.13%. Most of that yield comes from the share price. The five companies below all fit that pattern. Each has strong earnings and a payout ratio low enough to fund many more raises. A long streak of past increases supports the case for some of them, but the reason they're here is how much room each has to keep advancing.
Visa (NYSE:V) yields only about 0.72% on its $2.68 annualized dividend at a share price of $370.97. That's a small yield, but the dividend has a lot of room to grow. The payout uses about 22.8% of trailing diluted EPS of $11.75, and Visa's trailing operating margin is 66.1%.
