Belgium took the wind out of the United States men's national team's sails this summer during the 2026 World Cup. Before that humbling 4-1 defeat in the Round of 16, a controversial decision from FIFA effectively made the USMNT an enemy, at least according to Belgium defender Thomas Meunier.
The 35-year-old Meunier, who has 83 caps for Belgium and just represented the country in his third World Cup, explained to The Athletic that, because of head-turning call to suspend Folarin Balogun's red-card suspension, "everyone wanted us to beat America."
"Everyone wanted them to be eliminated," he added more than two months after the July 6 match, per The Athletic.
Balogun himself has admitted that, even though he was relieved to be on the pitch for the knockout match, hearing that he'd be part of the squad was bittersweet.
"My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves because it's something that's so unique," Balogun told "CBS Mornings" in July.

David Moyes has made it clear, Jack Grealish is in line to start for Everton against Tottenham this weekend. After a short outing from the bench in the recent defeat to Manchester United, the Everton manager believes the 31-year-old is now ready for a bigger role.
That matters, because Everton need quality and they need it quickly. Their transfer window closed with more frustration than progress. Grealish returned on loan for a second straight season, but the late collapse of a move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun left Moyes with a squad short on numbers and light on attacking options.
Moyes did not overcomplicate the issue. "I think Jack is special – I think he is ready to play, yes," said Moyes. "I think Jack is probably a boy who needs the football [matches] more than he needs the training sometimes."
That sums up Grealish well enough. He is a rhythm player. He needs minutes, contact, pressure, and repetition. Training helps, but matches sharpen him. Moyes sees that clearly and added: "I think game time helps Jack. AS Monaco have announced the squad for their upcoming UEFA Europa Conference League campaign. Folarin Balogun has been notably omitted from the squad. It comes following the breakdown of his move to Everton on transfer deadline day.
Monaco announced their UECL squad on Thursday. Balogun was not in it. Whilst Nice-Matin have reported that the USMNT international is likely to remain at Monaco, at least until the winter, there is still the possibility for him to depart. The transfer windows in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, notably, remain open.
Balogun returned to training for Monaco on Thursday, ahead of Friday night's game against Paris Saint-Germain. He has not been included in the matchday squad for that game, however. Folarin Balogun's £40 million ($54 million) move to Everton from Monaco collapsed hours before the transfer window closed because the United States striker pulled out over his "treatment" by the Premier League side, the Ligue 1 club's managing director said on Wednesday.
Balogun -- who was at the centre of controversy at the World Cup after US President Donald Trump successfully intervened to force FIFA to suspend a red card so he could play against Belgium in the last 16 -- had undergone a medical in England before Everton started to raise some concerns about his fitness.

Another day, another suitor for Iliman Ndiaye. In today's version, it's Tottenham Hotspur who have reached an agreement in principle with Everton for the Senegal international for a fee of about £60 million.
In his comments yesterday after Spurs sunk to their second consecutive league defeat to start the season, Roberto De Zerbi indicated that Richarlison had asked to leave the club 'many times', and now that will be allowed with a move to the Toffees accepted for about £35 million.
There had been a hue and cry when Everton had been forced to sell Richarlison quickly to Spurs a few years ago for £60m to balance the books at the end of the financial year, when his performances saving Everton from relegation demanded more. Now it looks like the Toffees are selling another forward in his prime for lower than his market value, and to add insult to injury, are overpaying for the Brazilian to return too given how his career has tailed off with injuries and the like.
As of this afternoon the Toffees appear to still be working on a loan for Jack Grealish, close to making a move for right back Kenny Tete from Fulham, and also have an interest in USMNT striker Folarin Balogun. Beto appears to be headed to Fiorentina and Adam Aznou on loan to Malaga.
This latest round of transfer rumours basically indicates that Everton are shifting into "win now" mode with adding older, Premier League-proven players. The concern will be that at the end of the year with David Moyes' contract up, the next manager could get saddled with the debt.

Pape Matar Sarr hasn't been seen in a Tottenham shirt since preseason and there are plenty of rumors that both he and the club are looking for an exit from N17. According to Sky Sports France's Sascha Tavolieri, the club making a late push for Sarr is none other than our good friends Nottingham Forest.
Previous rumors suggested that Sarr had preferred a move to Monaco, which as a French speaking Senegalese dude makes a ton of sense and would be a good move for him. Tavolieri writes that the Monaco interest is real, but unlikely to happen before the last week of the season and is contingent on Monaco offloading American striker Folarin Balogun first. But staying in the Premier League would have its advantages as well.
The whole kerfluffle over Morgan Gibbs-White last summer seemingly hasn't dimmed Tottenham's relationship with Forest THAT much if they're still considering a a deal. A loan plus an option isn't the best outcome for Tottenham, but it beats keeping Sarr around if he's not going to play that much, which feels like the case. Honestly, Forest wouldn't be a terrible club for Sarr to land at — he's likely going to get more playing time there and Oliver Glasner is a pretty good coach with good midfield ideas. No guarantee that Forest's mobster-boss owner Evangelos Marinakis wouldn't sack Glasner in a fit of rage after three consecutive losses, either.
Tavolieri writes that Spurs are asking €25m (£21.5m) for Sarr, which is what caused Galatasaray to back down after they offered €18m. That's well within the budgets of both Monaco and Forest (especially Forest). It could come down to where Sarr ultimately wants to go. But at this point it's looking very likely that he WILL go. Somewhere.

Newcastle United has been linked with yet another potential attacking addition as Matthias Jaissle continues **** sing a squad that struggled for consistent goals last season.
According to L'Équipe's Flavien Trésarrieu, Thomas Doucet and Loïc Tanzi, Newcastle has been closely monitoring Monaco striker Folarin Balogun since the beginning of the summer, although Tottenham has already made a move for the United States international and could beat the Magpies to the American.
"Since the start of the summer, several English [clubs] like Newcastle and Spanish clubs have been closely monitoring the player," L'Équipe reported. "Tottenham have made their move in recent hours. The London club has laid the groundwork for discussions regarding a transfer estimated at €60 million."
Balogun is represented by Jorge Mendes and remains under contract at Monaco through 2028, leaving the Ligue 1 club in a relatively strong position if Newcastle or another interested side decides to challenge Tottenham.

This is where I'd hesitate. Martin O'Neill's Celtic have built around a pragmatic, physical approach, and that creates a poor fit for a lightweight No.10 who wants freedom between the lines. Mahmić's best work comes in advanced areas, where he can drift into pockets, receive on the turn and make something happen quickly.
