Remember when Christmas Day used to be about family and gifts? A piping hot cocoa to start the day with a glass of wine to finish it. Gifts, family, food, fun. Do you also remember when sports on Christmas Day used to be minimal? Now, one in four Americans surround their Christmas Day planning around sports. Specifically the NBA and the NFL. Talk about a lump of coal for ol' Kris Kringle.
Since 2021, the NFL has staged at least two regular-season games every Christmas. The games began airing on traditional broadcast networks such as FOX and CBS, but have since shifted mainly to Netflix. This year, the NFL is presenting three games on the annual holiday that has long been dominated by the NBA. That has led to observers questioning whether the NBA should shift away from the holiday it has long claimed as its own. In reality, any shift would be a giant mistake.
Let's start with viewership.
Last year, ESPN/ABC's five-game slate of NBA action drew an average of 5.5 million viewers. The top stars were prominently featured. Start with the Knicks out East, mix in Steph Curry and defending league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and wrap things up with Nikola Jokic out West. From noon until well after midnight, NBA basketball was live on television. What we all have come to expect annually.
The NBA has had five games every Christmas since 2008, and viewership overall has been relatively consistent, averaging around 4.5 million to upwards of 6.3 million viewers, with most years falling in the 5.5 million range.

Melbourne Central Catholic won a playoff game for the second time in three years in 2025, reaching the regional semifinals to cap a 3-8 season.
The Hustlers begin a new era under head coach Ryan Schneider, who will look to take the team to heights he reached at Cocoa.
"(Practice) has been great. The kids are working hard. The coaching staff has done a great job putting together a plan to get us ready for our first game," Schneider said. "We've been improving every day, but that comes with the hard work that these are kids doing. It's a great group of young men who are focused and really moving in the right direction."
Schneider said the transition has been smooth this offseason, learning the players, and the players learning his system. A strong foundation of returning players is what enticed Schneider to take over at MCC.
"It makes all the difference. I would haven't come here if it wasn't a well put together program," Schneider said. "With coach (Willie) Tillman saying he would be the athletic director, that was another main reason why I came here. A chance to work with him and learn from him has been great. He does a great job. I think we really have great things on the horizon for us."

As we gear up for the 2026 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down nearly every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, high school recruiting rankings, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
QB2 is often the most popular player on any team partly because fans ***** ume the backup could spark the offense when QB1 struggles, and partly because limited garbage‑time flashes can create a false sense of readiness. With Marcel Reed firmly entrenched as the starter, the battle for the No. 2 spot becomes one of the more intriguing storylines of the preseason.
Right now, redshirt freshman Brady Hart holds the edge. He enrolled a year early, technically making him a member of the 2026 class, and that head start matters. He's already appeared in a few games and was previously locked in a semi‑competition with Miles O'Neill, who ultimately transferred for a better opportunity.
Still, Elko has made it clear the competition is real. If any of the other four backups show meaningful improvement, the depth chart behind Reed could shift as camp unfolds.

Football is finally here. We are only a few days away from the Virginia Tech Hokies opening fall camp. We recently began our preview of fall camp with five offensive players to know. Now, we'll do the same for the defensive side of the ball.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound edge rusher was an elite recruit out of Cocoa, Florida, only one year ago. He signed with Missouri, appearing in three games before choosing to redshirt. However, he entered the transfer portal and quickly became an in-demand player. Hilson chose the Hokies. He is one of several new edge rushers on this season's roster. Hilson, Mylachi Williams and Samuel Okunlola have the best chance to make an impact this fall.
Hilson's combination of size, length and speed gives him the highest upside of the group. He has the potential to make the same type of impact as Antwaun Powell-Ryland did a few years back. That's not saying Hilson will reach 16 sacks or more, but the potential is there. He can easily be a double-digit sack guy this fall.
We are double dipping at defensive end here. When head coach James Franklin was asked to name one player on each side of the ball who stood out this spring, he named Stevens. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Stevens has excellent size. After redshirting his freshman season, he's appeared in all 25 games over the last two seasons. Now, it's time for him to enter the starting lineup and never look back. Stevens will win at the point of attack with brute strength. It will be fun to watch him take the next step in his career.
The 6-foot-1, 228-pound sophomore didn't play over the first few games last season. Once he entered the lineup on Sept. 27 against N.C. State, he never looked back. Chambers had six tackles and one sack in that surprise road win over the Wolfpack. He kept getting better throughout the remainder of the season and became a priority to retain. Now, the Hokies have their middle linebacker, and he still has plenty of room to grow. His former head coach, Brent Pry, is now his defensive coordinator and position coach.
