NEW YORK — As the freshly-promoted Anthony Volpe settled into a new locker inside the Yankees' clubhouse on Thursday, he said that he felt as if he had been in a "bubble" at Triple-A.
Not because he was stuck in the minors, but because he was focused on trying to improve his game. Volpe said he was so locked in that he didn't even realize Jazz Chisholm Jr. sprained his thumb on Tuesday until RailRiders manager Shelley Duncan told him.
"I wanted to get a lot out of it," Volpe, recalled on Thursday after Chisholm was placed on the 10-day injured list, said of Triple-A. "You have a game every night to try out different stuff and feel what works and feel like it's going to translate in case an opportunity like this comes. So there was just a lot of trial and error."
On Thursday, however, Volpe only found results, going 3 for 4 with a grand slam that broke open the Yankees' series-sweeping, 10-3 win over the Rockies. The seventh-inning blast earned the New York native a curtain call from a crowd that has booed him plenty over the last few years.
Volpe, batting ninth, also had an RBI single and a stolen base on Thursday. He didn't make an error while starting at second base for the first time as a big leaguer, either.

With the Yankees looking to track down the Rays in the AL East while also maintaining the cushion they have on the Red Sox, this interleague matchup against the Rockies was a couple of must win games. Colorado is closing in on 100 losses and is as beatable an opponent as there is right now, sorry to them. Well so far, so good for the Yankees as they've taken the first two games of the series. Tonight, they'll go for the sweep.
To try and accomplish that sweep, the Yankees will give the ball to Max Fried. This will be Fried's third start since returning from the IL, and he's been decent enough so far, allowing two runs in 9.1 combined innings. He still hasn't gone over 72 pitches yet, so it's still unlikely that he'll be airing it out for 100 or anything tonight, but we'll see.
As for the rest of the lineup, the big news is the return of Anthony Volpe. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. going on the IL, Volpe has been recalled and will play second base. He has been hitting decently since getting sent back to the minors, so we'll see if there's any correlation now that he's back in the bigs. Aaron Judge will get a planned day off, his first since being reinstated from the IL on Tuesday as Aaron Boone will take it slow with his superstar outfielder especially after Judge returned without a rehab ***** ignment. Jasson Domínguez will start in right field instead and bat third, flanked by Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr.
Meanwhile, Ryan Feltner will take the mound for the Rockies. Feltner has a 5.91 ERA and a 5.27 FIP in his 106.2 innings on the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was having a decent year by Rockies pitchers standards until about mid-July, when a 2.1 inning eight-run disaster outing against Cincinnati ballooned his ERA north of five and he's stayed there ever since. His latest start was a mediocre one, where he lasted five innings and gave up four runs to the Cardinals, but he's got some seven-run outings in recent memory as the Dodgers and Nationals took him to task a couple of weeks ago.

The Yankees (79-60) and the Angels (53-86) conclude their three-game series tonight in Southern California with the series tied at one game apiece following New York's 7-3 win last night.

During the New York Yankees 16-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, WEEI radio's Red Sox play-by-play man Will Flemming made some alarming comments about Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Chisholm stole two bases in the eighth inning with the Yankees holding on to a six-run lead. He proceeded to call Chisholm a bush league player and said he does not play the game the right way. He also said that pitcher Jovani Morán should intentionally hit Austin Wells, who was at the plate, in retaliation for Chisholm stealing. Yankees players and fans were rightfully upset, including New York Knicks star Josh Hart.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — After a whirlwind of a day with the announcement that owner Arte Moreno was selling a majority stake of the team to Stan Kroenke, the night concluded with the Angels' 7-3 loss against the Yankees.
It was a similar story to the other 85 losses the Angels have had this season, but here are some notes from the game that stood out.
The Angels were down quickly, as right-hander Grayson Rodriguez allowed a two-run home run to Spencer Jones and then a solo shot to Jazz Chisholm Jr. the very next batter to give the Yankees an early 3-0 lead. But after that, Rodriguez settled in and allowed one more run the rest of the outing.
His final line was four earned runs in six innings of work with seven strikeouts and two strikeouts.
"Changeup started working a little bit better for me, made some adjustments with it," Rodriguez said was the key to settling in after the first inning. "They took some bad swings on it, so really worked that into the game plan."

Spencer Jones was, is, and will always be an enigma. He's an incredibly divisive player, one who dazzles with his pure athleticism at his hulking size, with true light-tower power, all with an Achilles heel of struggling mightily to make contact. He's a true four-tool player and will test the absolute limits of just how good a player with those tools can be, with arguably the most important tool completely missing from his toolshed.
Jones has had his highs and lows this season, but the reality is that he's steadily improved over the course of the season, particularly after each promotion. He's getting by with his clear weaknesses, while not looking overmatched against velocity or left-handed pitching, two things that always were his bugaboos in the minors. Bellinger snapped a 3-all tie when he drove a 1-1 fastball from Bennett Sousa (1-3) off the top of the center-field fence to score Trent Grisham and Ben Rice. Jeanie Buss, who is the team's governor, is the one Buss sibling opposed to selling that minority share. If the Buss family sells its portion, she will lose her position as governor. Earlier this month, Walter agreed to sell his majority share to Kushner and Iger, and that sale is expected to become official within several weeks.

Bottom of the ninth, Jays up by one. Louis Varland in. Jazz Chisholm Jr. leads off with a double to the wall in center. A ground out got us two out (very nice pickup by Vlad on a short hop), but Chisholm went to third in there. But Louis got Trent Grisham to strikeout to end the game. Amazing job, Varland.

The Yankees (71-55) and the Orioles (61-66) conclude their three-game AL East series tonight at Camden Yards. With wins in the first two games, New York has pulled to within five games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East. Baltimore opened the series sitting in the final Wild Card spot but now are 1.5 games behind the Twins for a postseason berth.
Last night the Yankees won, 5-3. Along the way, they may have gotten a little help from the umpires. More on that in a moment. The Orioles struck first in unusual fashion in the bottom of the first. Jackson Holliday stole home to give Baltimore an early 1-0 lead. New York answered quickly. In the second inning, Ryan McMahon delivered an RBI single that scored Jazz Chisholm Jr., tying the game before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Moments later, George Lombard Jr. hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Spencer Jones to give the Yankees a 2-1 advantage. The Yankees extended the lead in the third when Ben Rice launched a 447-foot solo homer to right-center field, his 34th home run of the season. Baltimore responded immediately as Pete Alonso crushed a 423-foot homer of his own in the bottom half, trimming the deficit to 3-2. What could have been an inning-ending doubleplay turned into a massive jam for Carlos Rodon and the Yankees.
Rodon would wind up striking out Carlos Narvaez before Jackson Holliday stepped into the batter's box with two outs. After Rodon got ahead 0-2, the southpaw threw a fastball away and a bit high. Holliday didn't bite, but Austin Wells hopped up to head into the dugout but stopped once he realized homeplate umpire Will Little didn't ring up the young Orioles infielder.

Today, on August 16th, it feels like the Yankees' offense is in such a hole that the prospect of a deep postseason run—this team's ultimate goal—is as unlikely a proposition as one could hope for. Ultimately, though, no matter how real these issues are, we know that there is an element of a local low in a 162-game season that won't last. In the meantime, these struggles could easily snowball into problems for the few healthy standouts in the Yankees lineup this season. Specifically speaking, Ben Rice and George Lombard Jr.
Carrying on the success of last season's breakout campaign, Rice is now indisputably one of the more powerful hitters in the American League in 2026. Early in the year, with a fully healthy lineup, Rice was legitimately producing like one of the MVP candidates, but that has changed since the start of June. As much as we could dive into those struggles, ***** uming we're confident of his long-term abilities, the focus here is on addressing a change in expectations and need.
Inadvertently suffering from the absence of Aaron Judge and the way pitchers can attack him because of it—from a psychological standpoint—Rice, for the first time in his career, is dealing with the pressure of anchoring a lineup. He is the one, in the current situation, the only one, in this lineup that opposing teams single out to create a plan of attack.
While the worst performers in this lineup seem to test the limits of this theory, frustration may only come from a place of expectation. Having seen what Rice can do at his best, a 4-for-40 run with which he starts August all of a sudden is under a microscope that it otherwise wouldn't have been had the team not been slumping this badly, offensively.
Sure, Rice is the type of hitter that could go on a tear at any moment; in fact, we saw that right around the All-Star Break, but his production shined the most when inserted into a context completely different from the one he is currently in. A potential failure to raise his game even further in this moment should not be held against him, especially when you address that on paper, this lineup, even in its current construction, should not be struggling this much. Asking ***** iot Ramos to mash lefties, Trent Grisham to get on base often, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. to do something are all far more reasonable requests than having Rice carry the lineup on his back. Yes, fairness is often brushed to the side in the cruel reality of high-level sports, but the healthiest course of action for this team's success moving forward lies in acknowledging all of this.

Chisholm is going to be a free agent after the season. It hasn't been a great campaign for Chisholm, to say the least. The 28-year-old is batting .216 right now in 113 games. That's a far cry from his career .243 batting average.
Last year, Chisholm blasted 31 home runs and drove in 80 runs in 130 games. This season, Chisholm has 17 home runs and 48 RBIs in 113 games played.
He hasn't been the same and the Yankees are going to have to decide whether they want to pay up and bring him back in 2027, or let him walk.

Yesterday our own Jeremy Nielsen described the Yankee offense no-showing like they were itching to just get on the plane and start their road trip already. Tonight felt like the bats somehow never left the tarmac, because aside from Trent Grisham poking one out of the stands there just wasn't anything to show for their at-bats. The Yankees wasted another solid pitching performance and allowed a starter on the other side that has been struggling to cut right through them in a 3-1 loss to Toronto.
Shane Bieber was on the mound for the Blue Jays, and he entered this game with a gaudy 5.48 ERA — naturally, that was of little consequence to this lineup. Bieber sat down the Yankees in order in the first inning, picking up strikeouts from Grisham and Spencer Jones, and worked around a one-out Jazz Chisholm Jr. single in the second. The third brought the first real instance of a pulse, Austin Wells leading off with a walk before getting forced out at second. Grisham stepped up and provided a single that should've made it a rally, but George Lombard Jr. was caught in the middle of trying to go for third and didn't get back to second in time, instead winding up in a rundown. A Ben Rice groundout ended the disappointing frame.

The Yankees ended their homestand on a 4-2 run, winning series against both the Braves and Mariners. Now they'll look to keep that momentum going on a road trip through a couple of AL East destinations, beginning tonight with a bout against the Blue Jays. Toronto has been rather disappointing this season, following up their pennant run with a 59-64 record that sits them in fourth place in the East, though thanks to the increasingly-embarrassing third Wild Card field they're only two games out of a playoff spot. There's still four teams ahead of them for said spot but the Jays are hardly going to roll over, especially against a bitter rival.
Gerrit Cole gets the ball looking to start the series off right, and he's been on a strong run since the calendar flipped over to July. Over his last seven starts he's pitched 43 innings and allowed just 13 runs while striking out 53, good for a 2.72 ERA in that span. The ace is coming off of a strong outing his last time out, having pitched seven strong with two runs allowed against Atlanta in an eventual Yankees win. If there was an accolade for second-half All-Stars, Cole would be in line to earn one with how he's rounded into form shaking off a rusty late start in his first year back from Tommy John surgery. For now, he's just looking to keep the line moving as the Yankee rotation has been carrying the team lately.
Shane Bieber goes opposite Cole, and it has been a season to forget for the former Guardians star pitcher. Bieber, in his second season north of the border, owns a 5.48 ERA in nine starts this year thanks in no small part to a horrendous outing he had on July 28th against Washington where he walked six batters and couldn't escape the first inning. Gerrit Cole gets the ball looking to start the series off right, and he's been on a strong run since the calendar flipped over to July. Over his last seven starts he's pitched 43 innings and allowed just 13 runs while striking out 53, good for a 2.72 ERA in that span. The ace is coming off of a strong outing his last time out, having pitched seven strong with two runs allowed against Atlanta in an eventual Yankees win. If there was an accolade for second-half All-Stars, Cole would be in line to earn one with how he's rounded into form shaking off a rusty late start in his first year back from Tommy John surgery. For now, he's just looking to keep the line moving as the Yankee rotation has been carrying the team lately.

Ryan Weathers carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth and Luis García Jr. sparked the decisive rally with his second double of the night for New York, which leads the American League wild-card race.
Randy Arozarena homered in the sixth for the fading Mariners (56-64), who have lost five in a row and 14 of 19 to fall a season-worst eight games under .500. Seattle, which opened a nine-game trip against three teams currently in playoff position, has mustered only five runs during the losing streak and nine in the past seven games.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. sent García to third with a single in the seventh, and rookie Spencer Jones drew a one-out walk. McMahon gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a bases-loaded single off reliever Michael Rucker (0-4), and Grisham added his two-run single off Eduard Bazardo.
