Manchester City begin their 2026-27 Champions League campaign at Porto on Tuesday, the first night of the new league phase and a landmark occasion for Enzo Maresca, who takes charge of a Champions League match for City for the first time since succeeding Pep Guardiola.
Both sides arrive with perfect domestic records, setting up the fifth competitive meeting between two clubs who have never previously finished on the losing side against each other. Porto return to the Champions League proper for the first time since 2023-24 having reclaimed the Primeira Liga ****** le last season, and they arrive full of confidence after seven straight wins in all competitions.
City, by contrast, head to Portugal having laboured to a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry City at the weekend, a game in which club-record £125m signing Enzo Fernandez was thrust into the starting XI earlier than planned following an injury to Nico O'Reilly. Maresca's side have won all three Premier League matches so far this season, though their away form in Europe has been notably shakier than their home record.

Jan Bednarek serves a one-match ban having been sent off in last season's Europa League quarter-final defeat to Nottingham Forest, meaning Nehuen Perez is set to partner Jakub Kiwior in central defence. Victor Froholdt, who was knocked unconscious and hospitalised during last weekend's win over Moreirense, remains sidelined along with Vasco Sousa, Oskar Pietuszewski, Gabriel Mec, Zaidu Sanusi and Samu Aghehowa. Diogo Costa continues in goal behind a defence that has conceded only once in six matches this season.

NEW YORK - Amid a troubling stretch for the Houston Astros rotation, an ace restored order. Fourteen games elapsed without an Astros starter finishing six innings before Hunter Brown took the mound at Citi Field on Friday. Half of those games saw their starter work 4 ⅓ innings or fewer, taxing a bullpen showing signs of strain. The rotation posted a 5.64 ERA in that span. Just two teams had a higher one.
The formula feels unsustainable for a team with playoff aspirations, but nor are solutions apparent for this team's pitching instability. Houston has three starters in which it shows trust. One, Peter Lambert, already is nearing a career-high innings total. Another, Hayden Wesneski, has not surpassed 91 pitches yet in six starts back from elbow surgery.
With both Cristian Javier and Tatsuya Imai - the two highest-paid starters on their roster - rested, the Astros will deploy an opener Saturday against the Mets. Bennett Sousa will draw the **** ignment, two days after a messy seventh inning at Yankee Stadium. Javier and Imai would ostensibly be available for bulk innings, but Imai has been on ice, appearing in three games this month.
Houston's bullpen has essentially been operating a man short as a result, magnifying the workload its regular relievers have shouldered. Steven Okert entered Friday with the third-most outings among AL relievers and AJ Blubaugh with the most relief innings in the majors. Okert, Enyel De Los Santos and Bryan Abreu were all among the 33 relievers in the league with at least 52 appearances.
Maintaining key arms for a playoff push is desirable, but the Astros' lack of cushion - a two-game lead over Texas in the AL West after their 3-1 win Friday - complicates strategic rest. So does the rotation's recent lack of reliability, forcing them to rely heavily on leverage relievers to secure wins. Getting more from that group seems critical over the final 27 games of their season.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a go-ahead double with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and the New York Yankees pulled away for a 9-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.
Bellinger snapped a 3-all tie when he drove a 1-1 fastball from Bennett Sousa (1-3) off the top of the center-field fence to score Trent Grisham and Ben Rice. The clutch swing came after Luis García Jr. reached on an infield single when Sousa didn't cover first base in time on a grounder to the right side.
Spencer Jones added an RBI single in the seventh and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a run-scoring double. Chisholm singled twice and finished with his third three-hit game this season.
Rice launched his 35th homer in the first inning and García tacked on a two-run shot in the eighth. García had three more hits after going 4 for 5 in Tuesday night's defeat.
Rice's homer pulled him within one of Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez for the American League lead and marked the first time in 24 games the Yankees scored in an opening inning.

In the end, Bennett Sousa just wasn't up to the task. Yankees 9 Astros 3.
The Astros would once again get on the board first. Isaac Paredes drew a two out walk and scored on a Jose Altuve double. However, the lead was short-lived as in the bottom of the same frame, Ben Rice would hit a solo shot.
The Yankees weren't done. Luis Garcia singled, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Christian Walker. George Lombard Jr brought him in giving the New York their first lead of the night, 2-1.
That remained the score until Daulton Varsho launched his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to center field to tie the game at 2.
In the bottom of the fourth the Yankees were active. Chisholm, Wells, and Caballero each singled which generated a 3-2 lead.

With the continuous disaster that the NCAA created and put on itself, some more bad news on the Gonzaga Bulldogs'front.
According to court documents from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, all Class of 2022 athletes from the state of Colorado ruling, except for those who have their own temporary restraining order or injunction until further state court order, are now ineligible after the NCAA stay was granted in the Ohio case.
That includes Gonzaga point guard Javon Bennett with the injunction now pending. He can attempt to join an existing state lawsuit or file a separate lawsuit, but there's no guarantee a judge will allow that.
The Zags technically have four open roster spots with all this fifth-year college eligibility nonsense going on in college athletics. They still await the outcome for point guard Nathan De Sousa of France's Cholet Basket and power forward/center Izan Almansa of Spain's Real Madrid.
To make the day even worse, Gonzaga is out of the lead guard Donovan Dent sweepstakes. The UCLA Bruins transfer guard will be joining coach Will Wade and the LSU Tigers, he told On3. After announcing his retirement from basketball in May and then unretiring in July, everyone thought Dent was headed to Spokane, Washington, once Mario Saint-Supery left the program for Spain's Valencia Basket of the EuroLeague.

Cristian Perez will likely call himself "UFC fighter" come Wednesday.
At Dana White's Contender Series 88 on Tuesday, Perez (15-2) finished a game opponent in Logan Paxton (10-2) with punches at 1:06 of Round 2. The lightweight bout took place at Meta APEX in Las Vegas.
The first round was competitive, with Paxton showcasing some aggression and power. Perez remained level-headed, focused on the ***** ignment. In Round 2, Perez put Paxton down with a big left hook and finished the fight with a pair of hammerfists.
Perez, 27, redeems himself after a failed DWCS attempt vs. Manoel Sousa in 2025. The fight was a back-and-forth banger, but Perez was finished midway through Round 3. The loss was the only one in his most recent eight appearances.
Paxton, 31, has an eight-fight winning streak snapped.

The 6-7, 215-pound wing, Iowa Hawkeyes wing Tavion Banks, received an extra year of college eligibility through the state of Colorado's injunction against the NCAA. After the eligibility ruling, Banks told 247 Sports that the Gonzaga Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Oklahoma Sooners are his four choices for his last college basketball campaign. A return to Iowa City, Iowa, is not being considered.
Banks averaged 10.2 points on 52.0 field goal percentage/44.2 three-point percentage/79.2 free throw percentage, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 37 games played, including 35 starts, for Iowa this past season.
Before joining the Hawkeyes, the Kansas City, Missouri, native began his career on the junior college level at Northwest Florida State College for his first two seasons. Banks then transferred to the Drake Bulldogs under coach Ben McCollum in 2024-25 and followed him to Iowa in 2025-26.
Gonzaga has one of their 15 roster spots available at the moment, but is also awaiting the NCAA to grant approval of 6-3 point guard Nathan De Sousa from France's Cholet Basket and 6-10 power forward/center Izan Almansa from Spain's Real Madrid.

HOUSTON (AP) — Ernie Clement's two-run homer in the 10th inning lifted the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-4 win over the Houston Astros Wednesday.
The game was tied at 3-all entering the 10th with the automatic runner on second when Clement sent the first pitch from Bennett Sousa (0-1) over left field to put the Blue Jays on top.
Yordan Alvarez's base hit to start Houston's 10th scored the automatic runner to get the Astros within 5-4, but Alvarez was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Astros challenged the call, which was upheld. Manager Joe Espada was then ejected for arguing the decision.
Chase Lee retired Jose Altuve and Daulton Varsho to end it and collect his first save.

Diogo Sousa (20) has signed for RC Strasbourg Alsace. The midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 club, as confirmed on Wednesday.

Starting in 15 of his 28 appearances across all competitions (one goal, one ****** ist), Sousa was instrumental not only in Os Conquistadores’ comfortable survival in Primeira Liga, but also in their League Cup victory.
He has signed a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around €10m.
