It wasn't pretty, but Arizona volleyball found a way to end its five-game losing streak with a victory over Oregon State on Saturday. The Wildcats won 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25) at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
"It was necessary for us to win that match," said Arizona head coach Rita Stubbs.
It was a struggle throughout. Arizona had difficulty scoring and Oregon State had success against the Wildcats' block. While Arizona had nine blocks, it also had four blocking errors on the day. The Wildcats only had nine blocking errors in seven matches this season prior to Saturday.
Things were tight in the sets Arizona won. The Beavers took a late lead in all three before Arizona came back. The third set, which Oregon State won, was even less competitive than the 25-16 score suggested. The Wildcats persevered and Stubbs used her bench when she needed to.
Destiny Ndam-Simpson leads the Wildcats with 3.42 kills per set this season, but Saturday wasn't her day. The Beavers kept her in check, regularly taking her out of the play with their serve. She received 24 serves despite being subbed out halfway through the third set and not returning. Only Carlie Cisneros with 25 receptions in four sets was targeted more. Four of the Beavers' seven aces were charged to Ndam-Simpson.

ATLANTA (AP) — Drake Baldwin doubled to center field in the 11th inning to score Ha-Seong Kim from first base and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Friday night in the opening game of a key NL East series.
The first-place Braves extended their lead over the Phillies to five games. The teams split a four-game series in Philadelphia that began last Friday.
Luis Arraez's single to left field off Didier Fuentes (7-2) in the 11th drove in designated runner Garrett Stubbs to give Philadelphia a 5-4 lead. Kim's single off Brooks Raley (5-6) in the bottom of the inning drove in Ozzie Albies to tie it. Baldwin followed with the winning double.
Phillies right-hander Jonathan Bowlan blew a 3-2 lead in the ninth. Bowlan gave up a one-out single to Mike Yastrzemski. Pinch-runner DaShawn Keirsey Jr., who was recalled before the game, scored from first on Sean Murphy's single up the middle and center fielder Derek Hill's fielding error.
Aaron Nola gave up homers to Matt Olson in the first and Austin Riley in the seventh. Braves left-hander Chris Sale allowed three runs on only three hits in seven innings but struggled with two outs in the second. Edmundo Sosa singled before Sale walked Bryan De La Cruz and hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch to load the bases. Derek Hill doubled off the center-field wall to drive in three runs.

It's September, which means rosters can be expanded a bit. Gone are the days where a ton of players move up to the big leagues, where rosters went to somewhere near 40. Instead, the team is only allowed to bring up two players.
Marchan adds a third catcher to the group, meaning there will probably be more chances for Garrett Stubbs to be used as a left handed bat off the bench. Marchan has been hurt for seemingly eternity, but he's ready to go.
Grant Holman has been excellent since being claimed off of waivers in May.
Having another arm for the bullpen is always a good thing and as well as Holman has been pitching, he'll be a welcome addition.

PHOENIX (AP) — Bryson Stott hit a homer, Aaron Nola provided another solid start on the mound and the Philadelphia Phillies finished a torrid August with a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
The Phillies have won five straight, 14 of their past 16 and finished with a 21-7 record in August, which was the best mark in the big leagues. They're now just four games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Stott crushed a 464-foot homer to right field in the second that gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Bryce Harper's double off the center field wall in the third scored Garrett Stubbs and pushed the advantage to 2-0.
Nola (6-10) pitched into the sixth inning, giving up one run on five hits and two walks, striking out five. The veteran right-hander has given up two runs or less in five straight starts.
Alex McFarlane, Orion Kerkering, Brooks Raley, Jose Alvarado and Jhoan Duran combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Duran earned his 29th save in 31 chances, stranding runners on first and third.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber reached base four times as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Monday night.
Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter took a no-hitter into the sixth before running out of steam. Iván Herrera's one-out double broke up the no-hit bid and Alec Burleson followed with a two-run single that chased Painter after 93 pitches.
Painter (2-8) allowed two runs on two hits, walked three and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings as the Phillies won their second straight and for the seventh time in 10 games. Jonathan Bowland earned his first save in four chances.
Brandon Marsh singled and scored on a Hunter Dobbins throwing error, and Sosa followed with an RBI single to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Schwarber, who leads the National League with 35 homers, singled and scored in the fifth, and doubled home Garrett Stubbs in the seventh to add to the lead. Schwarber also walked twice.

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer has moved to 10th on the all-time strikeout list, passing Walter Johnson.
Scherzer achieved the feat by getting Kyle Schwarber to strike out looking in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was his fourth punchout of the game. Unfortunately, Trae Turner and Bryce Harper followed it up with a solo home run apiece, which forced Toronto to go to the bullpen.
The veteran starting pitcher entered the day with 3,512 career strikeouts, only three behind tying Johnson. Scherzer struck out Harper in the first inning, Garrett Stubbs in the third inning, and then Bryan De La Cruz in the fifth inning to tie the Hall of Famer.
Scherzer has the second-most strikeouts among active pitchers. He trails only Justin Verlander, who has 3,554. The veteran Verlander has already indicated that this will be his final season.
The Blue Jays pitcher will now set his sights on ******* Perry, who had 3,534 strikeouts. With Scherzer finishing Saturday night's game with 5,316, he only needs 19 strikeouts to move into sole possession of ninth-place all-time.

Nationals manager Blake Butera was ejected in the top of the seventh inning because he thought Garrett Stubbs tripped into Nasim Nuñez during a run down that began to change the tides into the Phillies favor.
While Butera was not witnessing the game from the dugout, he and the entire Nationals organization experienced a flashback and will have nightmares tonight because of their bullpen.
After cruising through six innings, the Nationals staff let Andrew Alvarez return for the seventh inning against the bottom half of the Phillies order with a three-run lead. After a flyout to Alec Bohm, Bryan De La Cruz was hit by a backfoot slider in an 0-2 count that gifted him first base. Bryson Stott then worked a walk and it was time for the 2026 Washington Nationals bullpen.
First up is left-hander Tom Cosgrove against the bottom of the Phillies order. Against Edmundo Sosa, Cosgrove could not find the strike zone and walked Sosa on five pitches to bring up Derek Hill.

LONDON (AP) — Looking back, it seems perfectly understandable that it took Serena Williams some time to settle her nerves in her first singles match in nearly four years.
Rennae Stubbs, one of Williams' coaches, pin-pointed a moment about an hour into the 44-year-old's defeat to an opponent less than half her age earlier this week at Wimbledon.
“I noticed in the middle of the second set her take a big sort of deep breath and I actually turned around to Venus and said, ‘Oh I think she just relaxed,’” Stubbs said, referring to Serena's older sister.
In an interview with The ***** ociated Press on Saturday, Stubbs also revealed that she first started coaching Williams again in March and immediately noticed that the 23-time Grand Slam champion could still play.
Williams was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 by 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bryce Harper hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning, Derek Hill followed with a three-run shot as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied from an early five-run deficit and beat the Washington Nationals 10-5 on Thursday night.
The Phillies came from behind for a third straight game, winning the series by scoring 15 runs in the ninth inning against the majors' worst bullpen after dropping opener of the four-game series 4-1.
Harper homered off Gus Varland (1-2), scoring pinch-runner Garrett Stubbs after Kyle Schwarber singled to start the inning. It was Harper's ninth career go-ahead homer in the ninth inning or later, and his 103rd homer at Nationals Park — where he played his first seven seasons.
Hill added his sixth home run, one night after winning the game with a pinch-hit shot.
The Phillies, who became the first team in history to win two straight games after being down to their last strike with the bases empty, trailed 5-0 after the Nationals scored four runs in the first off ace Cristopher Sánchez.

The Ben Franklin Bridge lit up in blue lights Wednesday night in honor of Xavier Taylor.
He is the 12-year-old player from Maple Shade Youth Baseball, who was hit in the neck by an errant throw last week.
Xavier is in the ICU on a ventilator and in critical condition.
His dad tells Action News that Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs visited Xavier in the hospital, as the community continues to rally support for the family.
