Ray Matthews is no stranger to extreme challenges - after all, when he turned 75 the keen runner marked the milestone by running the equivalent of 75 marathon distances in 75 days. Ten years on, his passion for running remains undimmed.
Matthews, from Rotherham, has now set his sights on taking part in next year's Bigfoot 200 ultra-marathon in the USA, whose 200-mile (322km) route will take him through Washington State's Cascade Mountains.
"I feel I can do it. I know I can do it," the 85-year-old says with determination.
"What I need to do now is to knuckle down and start big time training."

Big league rosters have officially expanded now that we've reached the month of August. The Cincinnati Reds responded in kind by promoting both Brandon Williamson and Juan Brito earlier on Tuesday, the latter providing depth across the infield as the Reds face something of a short-term crisis there.
Ke'Bryan Hayes resides on the 10-day IL at the moment. Superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz has a quad strain, and given how much his leg problems sapped his overall production last season the Reds are going to keep him at DH for the foreseeable future until he's absolutely 100%. That means Matt McLain has moved from 2B over to SS, and to compound things Eugenio Suarez has been absent from team activities the last few days as he works towards gaining US citizenship.
So, the Reds need some infield depth. Edwin Arroyo was recalled to help bridge that gap, and Brito will, too, but that only serves to thin the mix at AAA behind them. Cincinnati responded to that cascade of infield inputs on Tuesday evening by signing veteran infielder Orlando Arcia to a minor league deal.
Arcia, 32, began the 2026 season with in the Minnesota Twins organization and hit .271/.300/.354 with them across 50 PA before being released in late July. He posted an .834 OPS with Minnesota's AAA affiliate in St. Paul along the way, but ended up playing in the Mexican League for a trio of games before the Reds scooped him up.
He was an All Star with Atlanta in 2023 and is a veteran of over 1000 big league games, so he'll certainly provide a stable floor of depth across the middle infield even if the Reds are a) going nowhere this season and b) decide to slow the roll of Elly and others as the final month of the season dwindles down. That said, he owns just a career 76 OPS+, so one can hardly expect him to be lightning in a bottle for the club at this time.

Teams are preparing for the season in volleyball, football, soccer and cross country.
The first day for contests is Thursday, Aug. 27, except for football, which can have jamborees that day, but no full games until Aug. 28.
Marshfield will host its traditional volleyball jamboree, which includes several other area teams, on Aug. 27 and then heads to Cascade Christian for a tournament on Aug. 29.
North Bend and Coquille both are in Marshfield's jamboree and then face each other on Aug. 29 in North Bend. Coquille then hosts both Marshfield and Creswell on Sept. 3, with each team playing the other two.

The 2026 AUSL championship became the most-watched professional softball game on record, as the softball league continued to report strong viewership in its second season.
The championship game between the Utah Talons and Chicago Bandits averaged 732,000 viewers on ABC Sunday, a record for a softball game. The game was the first professional softball game to air on broadcast television.
Overall, according to Sports Business Journal, ESPN games averaged 375,000 viewers, up 150% from last year. Games also aired on MLB Network and CBS Sports Network.
"It just continued to build, crowds grew, ratings grew as the season went, and sponsor activation grew as we went as well," Athletes Unlimited co-founder and CEO Jon Patricof told Sports Business Journal.
The AUSL made a notable change for the 2026 season, moving teams back to their home markets after they toured in 2025. The league recorded 25 sellouts in 2026, with the Portland Cascades accounting for nearly half.

Call it a B-spec, call it a heavily revised AMR26, call it whatever you want – what Aston Martin rolled out at the Hungaroring for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix is, by any reasonable engineering standard, a new Formula 1 car. Sixteen separate components were declared upgraded, mechanics broke FIA curfew to get both cars fitted in time, and the team reportedly flew spare parts to Budapest just to guarantee Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll could each run the full package. That is not a development update. That is a rebuild.
The backstory is by now well-documented and not particularly flattering. Adrian Newey didn't get serious work underway on the AMR26 until mid-March 2025, and the wind tunnel didn't see a model until mid-April – three months behind rivals who were already deep into the new regulatory cycle. The car that arrived at pre-season testing in Barcelona was overweight, paddock insiders estimated by somewhere between 10 and 15 kilograms, maybe more, and the Honda power unit was generating vibrations severe enough to rattle onboard cameras loose and leave Alonso and Stroll visibly fighting the steering wheel.
At the Australian opener, Alonso qualified 2.462 seconds off the pace. Both cars retired when the vibrations damaged the battery systems. It went largely sideways from there – one point across the opening ten rounds, tenth of eleven teams in the constructors' standings, behind only the expansion Cadillac outfit.
The nose is the clearest sign of how deep the changes go. Where the original AMR26 carried a wide, blunt front structure, the Hungary version features a noticeably thinner, more tapered profile – the kind of slender nose Newey has favoured since his early Red Bull years. That change alone cascades through the entire front end: new uprights, revised aerodynamic ducting, changed actuator mounting, and a completely reworked front wing with reshaped endplates. Per Newey, the forward section of the chassis was lightened to the point that it required a full re-homologation and fresh crash testing – which, depending on your definition, crosses the threshold from upgrade to new car.
Newey himself occupies both sides of that argument simultaneously. "The main structural elements remain the same – the chassis and gearbox architecture don't fundamentally change – but we've taken weight out of both, which required re-homologating and crash testing the forward chassis," he said. So: same architecture, new crash test. Make of that what you will.

Mike Perry and Dillon Danis are venturing into new waters.
The two well-known combat sports names have agree to meet in an MMA bout on Aug. 29 at the Kia Center in Orlando, headlining the debut combat event from online crypto casino and sportsbook DuelBet. The show will be held under the "Duel: Arena" promotional banner, organized by veteran MMA matchmaker Dean Toole, featuring a hybrid card composed of MMA, kickboxing and boxing bouts.
The card, including Perry vs. Danis, will take place in a ring rather than a cage, per MMA Fighting. Toole told the outlet that the Aug. 29 lineup will additionally include "some influencer bouts as well, and a few [other] UFC vets" to be announced soon.

Water conservation is a key part of the Chicago Cubs' sustainability efforts, and because Wrigley Field is more than 100 years old, the team has had to think outside the box.
That creativity led ***** istant Groundskeeper Graham Flora to look to his own backyard for inspiration.

Considered one of the building blocks of the brand-new Portland Cascade franchise, the shortstop is one of two selections on the team, alongside former UCLA star Megan Grant, as she has put together a strong year on both sides of the ball.
At the plate, she's posted a .273 batting average and .775 OPS with 9 hits, including a pair of triples and a double, 10 runs scored, and 3 walks. In the field, the three-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year has recorded 60 putouts and 51 ****** ists with 9 double plays and 3 errors, good for a .974 fielding percentage.
Bates has helped lead the Cascade to an 8-5 record in the early portion of the season, which is good for second place in the newly expanded six-team AUSL behind only the Utah Talons, who are led by another former UW standout in outfielder Jadelyn Allchin.
The two-time First Team All-American finished her career under coach Heather Tarr with a .385 batting average and 145 runs batted in, to go along with her program record 320 hits and laundry list of accolades.

Realistically, Mitch Oard isn't after 13, he's after 131.
Having missed last year's City Golf Tournament caused by a conflict with the Indiana State Amateur, Oard came back this year, as he always does, going after the Qualifying Tournament record set by Ike Martin back in 1993.
There's been a few 133s and a 132 since then, but the mark stands. Oard, a three-time champ and a member of the tourney's hall of fame, has the game to go after it rather than simply worrying about making the cut. No matter what seed he'd earn for match play, he'd be a tough out.
"That's part of something I look forward to (each year) is trying to get that number," Oard said. "He's had that for a really long time."
Oard started off qualifying with a 67 and came back in 70 on Sunday, June 28 at muggy Cascades, good for a 5-under 137 and a seven-stroke win over Logan Vernon, to lead the effort to see if anyone can quell Jason Bannister's four-year reign in the Men's Championship flight. Given the forecast and the experience of last year, placing extra emphasis on a good opening round score in the City Golf Qualifying Tournament was in the back of a few golfers' minds at Cascades on Saturday, June 27.
Mitch Oard wasn't one of them, preferring more of a water-off-a-duck's back approach. Still, the former champ and tourney hall of famer, announced his return to the tournament after a rare absence in 2025, firing a 67 to take a four-shot lead in the Men's Championship division.
"I didn't look at the weather," Oard said. "I wasn't really worried about the rain. Didn't look like it's going to rain tomorrow now. I didn't play last year, so I was just excited to be here. Hard to get 131 if you don't play 36."

Boise Cascade reported its Q1 2026 results on May 4. It said total revenue fell 2% YoY to $1.5 billion. At the segment level, the Building Materials Distribution business reported a 1% decline in sales to $1.39 billion. The segment’s EBITDA dropped 23% to $48.2 million. This segment was weighed down by a decrease in sales price and increases in selling and distribution expenses.
The Wood Products segment recorded a 4% drop in sales to $398.2 million. The segment’s EBITDA declined 20% to just under $32 million. Lower sales prices and higher costs affected this segment’s performance.
Boise Cascade CEO Jeff Strom said the results were impressive considering the company operated in a difficult demand environment. Strom noted that demand during the quarter was influenced by factors such as adverse weather, geopolitical events, and volatile mortgage rates. Looking ahead, Boise Cascade anticipates adjusted EBITDA in the band of $83 million to $115 million.

The "Just Give Me a Reason" singer—who's hosting the biggest night in theater this year—stunned in a bejeweled LBD with lookalike daughter Willow, son Jameson, husband Carey Hart, and her mom Judith Moore during the family affair.
Fresh off her New York City move to support her 14-year-old daughter's dreams of performing on a Broadway stage, Pink tapped into her own love of the theater in a show of high-octane glamour. Ahead of her Chicago tribute performance, the "So What" singer celebrated the Roaring 20s-era show's 30th anniversary on Broadway with a sculptural gown with a plunging sweetheart neckline, a column skirt, and a blue flower-petal inspired ruffle overlay that cascaded down the sides and back of her dress. Pink matched her ruffled train to a matching floral piece in her hair, which complemented a pair of black shoulder-length dangling earrings.
