Chelsea are approaching the final weeks of the transfer window with an unresolved question at their centre. Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a move to Manchester City throughout August, and the commercial logic of selling is not difficult to construct. What is considerably more difficult is justifying strengthening a direct rival at a moment when that rival's most glaring weakness is precisely the position Fernandez occupies.
Fernandez cost Chelsea €120 million in January 2023. He was bought to be the deep-lying conductor of a new-look midfield – the replacement for Jorginho, the organiser around whom creativity would flow. That vision has never been fully realised at Stamford Bridge, and the reasons why are well-documented.
Every manager Chelsea (7.04) has appointed since his arrival has struggled to make a Fernandez-Caicedo double pivot function out of possession. Fernandez is not physically built to cover large central ***** es. His defensive awareness is sharp enough for international soccer, where Lionel Scaloni's Argentina have found ways to manage around his limitations, but has never been sharp enough at club level to survive without significant structural support.
Enzo Maresca's solution last season was to move Fernandez into the left pocket, push a fullback deeper into the midfield beside Caicedo and slow Chelsea's possession game to keep the team compact. It improved the collective structure and allowed Fernandez to play his best soccer at Chelsea, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. But it came at a notable cost, most visibly, the significant dip in Cole Palmer's form.
Xabi Alonso is not going to replicate that approach. His 3-4-2-1 system places Morgan Rogers and Palmer as dual attacking midfielders behind the striker. That is precisely where Fernandez would be best utilised. But Chelsea paid £117 million for Rogers this transfer window to fill that exact role. The positional arithmetic does not work in Fernandez's favour.

Sunderland have completed the signing of 18-year-old striker Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle.
The highly-rated forward has signed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light after attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.
Standing at 6ft 4in, Angulo made his professional debut for Independiente del Valle in March 2026 and immediately made an impact, scoring in a 3-1 victory over Mushuc Rung.
Later that month, the teenager received his first call-up to the Ecuador senior squad despite having only just broken into professional football.
Angulo leaves Independiente del Valle after scoring six goals in 15 league appearances this season, averaging a goal every 115 minutes.

Xabi Alonso believes Chelsea's ability to remain flexible and unpredictable will be crucial as his side continue to develop ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Blues produced an impressive display to beat AC Milan 3-0 in Jakarta, with Joao Pedro scoring twice and Moises Caicedo adding a superb volley.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo says Enzo Fernandez will be able to handle any negative reaction from England fans after his role in Argentina's victory over the Three Lions.
The Argentina international, 25, cupped his ears after scoring the equaliser in last month's feisty World Cup semi-final win against England.
The following day, he posted a photo on Instagram of himself and three team-mates laughing alongside Oasis song Wonderwall, after Argentina's extra-time victory.

England international? Tick. Premier League winner? Tick. At least 35 years old? Erm, tick that too. Chelsea's transfer policy has taken a surprising turn this summer, ripped up and rewritten, and it's led the club to the doors of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.
Chelsea are working on deals to add both to Xabi Alonso's squad in time for the start of the new season. They have also missed out on other experienced targets such as John Stones, 32, who is set for a move to Inter Milan, and Granit Xhaka, 33, who Sunderland are determined to keep as captain.
It is a stunning departure from one of the most aggressive youth-focused transfer strategies in Premier League history, which has brought waves of potential to Stamford Bridge replete with lavish decade-long contracts. BlueCo have been dogmatic, signing only one player over 25 – defender Tosin Adarabioyo – since the summer of 2023. Last season, Chelsea signed 10 players ranging in age from 18 (Estevao, Kendry Paez) to 23 (Joao Pedro).

The 23-year-old has agreed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge after emerging as one of the Premier League's brightest attacking talents during his time at Villa. The fee surpasses the £115m Chelsea paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 and is also a record transfer for a British player.

Manchester United have agreed a £50million deal to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
The midfielder is set to undergo a medical with Manchester United after terms were agreed on a transfer that could reach £50m with add-ons. United will pay Chelsea an initial £48m fee, with a further £2m in achievable add-ons, and Chelsea retaining a 10% sell-on clause.
Santos is set to become the second signing of Manchester United's midfield rebuild. The Red Devils have agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, for around £35m, and are now set to add the 27-year-old's international teammate.
The Athletic are reporting that Santos has already agreed personal terms and the deal will be finalised once a medical is completed.
Santos struggled for regular minutes at Chelsea last season, due to the presence of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in midfield. He made 13Premier League starts for the West Londoners in 2025/26 and has earned eight caps for Brazil.

Elliot Anderson may have cost Manchester City considerably months before they agreed to make him the most expensive British footballer ever. When he last played at the Etihad Stadium, in March, he let fly from 25 yards. A crisp, clean strike earned Nottingham Forest an unexpected point. Perhaps City would not have won the **** le anyway, but the loss of two gave them less leeway in the run-in.
Now Anderson forms a £116m statement of intent in their bid to regain their crown and begin Enzo Maresca's reign as the Premier League's greatest force. The World Cup has illustrated some of the reasons to buy him, beyond simply getting one of Manchester United's transfer targets. Anderson has the passing range, over both short and long distances, the athleticism to cover ground, the ability to operate as both a No 6 and a No 8. In a tournament when few England players beyond Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have excelled, he has.
But while the fee is in keeping with the current midfield market, it is astonishing nonetheless. City are huge spenders in one respect, but not another. Their previous club record buy – Jack Grealish, for £100m that really was not well spent at all – was an outlier. Nearly all of their outstanding pieces of business in Pep Guardiola's decade in charge came for between £30m and £65m. Rayan Cherki, last summer, was near the bottom of that scale, even Erling Haaland not at the top. Guardiola's preferred midfield axis in his valedictory season consisted of two of his greatest buys, Rodri and Bernardo Silva. Their combined cost was less than Anderson's, even though the Spaniard was a club record purchase when he joined.
Anderson is a history-maker in one respect. In another, he could have company. There will be at least five £100m men in Premier League midfields next season, unless Enzo Fernandez gets his wish of a move to Real Madrid: Sandro Tonali is going to Tottenham for £100m, Fernandez and Moises Caicedo had a combined cost rising to £222m for Chelsea and **** nal had to fork out £105m for Declan Rice, who is now one of two £100m men in Thomas Tuchel's midfield.
The chorus from the Gunners fans has been that "we got him half price". And if not true, it is nevertheless the case that, so far, only Rice of the midfielders who came at a ground-breaking cost has succeeded. The driving force in **** nal's first Premier League triumph in 22 years, a man who powered them to a Champions League final, a talisman and a great all-rounder, Rice has been a game-changer of a buy.

Ecuador head coach Sebastian Beccacece has revealed he will resign following his team's FIFA World Cup loss to Mexico. Beccacece could only observe as his side fell 2-0 to the tournament co-hosts in the Round of 32.
La Tri were identified as a dark horse to advance deep in the competition, with players such as Moises Caicedo spearheading their team. They fell short against Mexico as Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez netted first-half goals before Piero Hincapie was dismissed in the 95th minute.

Moisés Caicedo’s first game as the official captain of the Ecuador national football team did not turn out the way he would have wanted to, coming out on the losing end of a 2-0 defeat against Mexico, who thus advance to the Round of 16. Ecuador are going home, earlier than they would have liked and earlier than most were expecting.
It was the battle of El Tri against La Tri on yet another famous World Cup night at the Azteca in Mexico City, giving the host nation massive home field advantage, which they gleefully utilized to crush, demoralize, and frustrate their opposition. It was perhaps ironic that Mexico’s first goal — a simple counter and thunderous finish — came after Ecuador weathered the early storm and started to gain a foothold in the game, but the second not long after was certainly in line with the overall flow of the game. And Raúl Jiménez being the scorer just added to the emotion of the moment.
That said, the game lacked for great chances or much glorious attacking football, but Mexico took their moments and Ecuador offered very little even as we headed deeper and deeper into the second half. As good as their defense may be, with such a low-scoring offense, they were always going to find it tough to come back. Defense may win championships, but it does help to also score sometimes.
So, it’s to the beach for Captain Caicedo (and for Kendry Páez, who did finally get to play a few minutes at the World Cup: just enough to get a yellow as Ecuador’s discipline crumbled completely at the end). See you back at Cobham soon, Moi!
Elsewhere yesterday, France kept rolling, easing past Graham Potter’s Sweden, 3-0 (Mbappé with another brace) and Norway found a late winner (through Erling Haaland of course) to edge past Côte d’Ivoire, 2-1. Malo Gusto played the final 15 minutes for the French, who are looking absolutely unbeatable at the moment.

Stubborn World Cup debutants Curaçao earned a much deserved first point at the tournament in their history while severely denting Ecuador’s hope of reaching the knockouts in an entertaining 0-0 draw in Group E.
Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata, Moises Caicedo, and substitute Nelson Angulo all went close as Ecuador had 15 shots on target and 27 in total, only to be denied by a heroic performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room.

Caicedo, for those not familiar with his name, is an 18-year-old attacker who chiefly lines out on the left wing. The 18-year-old has long been considered one of the standout young talents in South America, tipped for a bright future at the top level of the game.
This reputation has given rise to links with a whole host of European clubs, eager to ***** Caicedo up before he explodes onto the world stage.
And as alluded to above, on Friday, one of the starlet’s leading suitors appear to have managed precisely that.
