Xabi Alonso has called Levi Colwill "one of the best centre backs in the world" in his first Premier League press conference.

Chelsea are playing after everyone else in the Premier League this week, with their game against Fulham coming on Monday night.
So of course, for some reason they're doing an early press conference, on a Thursday. Xabi Alonso has just sat down to talk to the press.
One of the most interesting topics he covered was on Levi Colwill. The central defender missed most of last season injured, and while he did return for the final games, he still needs to be treated carefully.

It did not take long for Kieffer Moore to underline once again his importance to Wrexham's hopes of success.
Less than three minutes into the new Championship campaign, the Wales forward was wheeling away to celebrate his first goal of 2026-27.
Even after Rubin Colwill's punishing Cardiff City equaliser denied Wrexham the Welsh derby bragging rights in the last moments of Monday's game, it was hard to shift the smile of a striker who knows the importance of a fast start in front of goal.
Moore's early goal had left former Wales international Nathan Blake purring on punditry duty and manager Phil Parkinson praising his "brilliant" leading of the line.
So far, so good – and similar to the impact from a key role last term.

Lewis O'Brien says Wrexham's 1-1 draw with Cardiff City "hurts" as his side failed to see out victory in the Welsh capital.
Phil Parkinson's side appeared destined to kick-start their 2026-27 Championship campaign with a win over the Bluebirds after Kieffer Moore's third-minute strike.
But substitute Rubin Colwill struck a free-kick beyond debutant Anthony Patterson in the eighth minute of added time to earn Brian Barry-Murphy's men a share of the spoils at Cardiff City Stadium.
"It hurts to put that much effort into a game and draw like that. It's a really tough one to take," said O'Brien.
"I think we started well, we started fast. Obviously got the goal early. I think we played some good stuff.

Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy has urged patience with Rubin Colwill after the midfielder scored a late equaliser in Monday's 1-1 draw with Wrexham.
Colwill came off the bench to rescue a point for Cardiff, but Barry-Murphy admitted he may have introduced the 23-year-old earlier than planned given his limited training time.
The Wales international has only completed two days of training and will now be ***** sed ahead of Cardiff's next fixture against Derby.
"Rubin has only trained for two days, so I probably shouldn't have put him on as early as I did, but the way the game was going I felt we needed a bit of something different," Barry-Murphy said.
Colwill made an immediate impact after being introduced, finding the net late on with a stunning free-kick to ensure Cardiff avoided defeat against their Welsh rivals.

Phil Parkinson bemoaned his team's lack of ruthlessness – and the amount of stoppage time at the end of the game – after a 98th-minute equaliser denied Wrexham a Welsh derby victory over Cardiff City.
Parkinson's side were on course to begin the new Championship campaign with a hard-fought win after Kieffer Moore's third-minute goal at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Wrexham missed chances to extend their lead – and twice hit the woodwork – on a night when they carried greater threat than their hosts only to be denied a win when Rubin Colwill smashed in a free-kick in the last act of the game.
"We've had chances to kill the game off. We haven't taken them, the keeper's made saves, but we haven't really made him make a top-class save," Parkinson said.
"We knew we could give Cardiff problems and time and time again we did. Really in the cold light of day, the game should have been out of sight, but it wasn't."

Brian Barry-Murphy toasted substitute Rubin Colwill's impact in Cardiff City's dramatic Welsh derby draw with Wrexham - after admitting he should not have come on as early as he did.
The Bluebirds seemed destined for defeat in their opening game of the new Championship season after Kieffer Moore's early goal at the Cardiff City Stadium.
On a night when Wrexham missed chances to put the game to bed, Cardiff huffed and puffed, but looked like lacking the quality to find an equaliser until Colwill lashed home a free-kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
"I thought he had a big impact on a big game," Barry-Murphy said.

Chelsea travels to Indonesia for another pre-season friendly as they face AC Milan on Saturday at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Date: Saturday, 8th August.
Kick-off: 1pm BST.
Venue: Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso faces significant selection dilemmas ahead of the friendly in Jakarta, primarily driven by a heavily depleted squad following the World Cup. A large contingent of first-team regulars—including Enzo Fernández, Reece James, Malo Gusto, Jordan Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Morgan Rogers, and Valentín Barco—remain entirely unavailable as they build up fitness. On a positive note, Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill are expected to return to action after being rested against Juventus due to minor knocks. Mykhailo Mudryk is also in line for increased minutes, building on his brief substitute appearance which marked his return to football after a 20-month anti-doping suspension. Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah has been left out of the touring squad entirely as he edges closer to a permanent transfer away from Stamford Bridge. This leaves room for new signings like Danny Welbeck and young winger Geovany Quenda to push for starting roles.

Chelsea continue their pre-season tour with a trip to Indonesia, where they are set to take on AC Milan on Saturday at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
The Blues have not enjoyed the most convincing run of results under new head coach Xabi Alonso so far. Their preparations began on a positive note with a win over Western Sydney Wanderers, but momentum has since dipped. Chelsea have gone on to lose their last two matches, first suffering a narrow defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, then a 1-0 loss to Juventus in Hong Kong.
Alonso is currently dealing with several selection concerns ahead of the clash in Jakarta, largely due to a stretched squad in the aftermath of the World Cup.
Several key first-team players are still unavailable as they continue to regain full fitness. Those missing include Enzo Fernández, Reece James, Malo Gusto, Jordan Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Morgan Rogers, and Valentín Barco.
There is some encouraging news, however, as Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill are both expected to return after missing the Juventus game with minor injuries.

Chelsea have explored a move for Bologna centre-half John Lucumi, according to Quotidiano Sportivo.
The Blues are looking to shore up a defence that leaked goals last season and want to bring another centre-back to Stamford Bridge after completing a deal for Maxence Lacroix.
Chelsea are now eyeing Lucumi, who has caught the eye with his performances in Italy.
Last season, the reported Chelsea target won 58 percent of his aerial and 60% of his ground duels, earmarking himself as one of the better defenders in Serie A.
Levi Colwill is a world-class prospect but has struggled for consistency due to constant injury setbacks.

Chelsea have opened talks to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, according to Fabrizio Romano. He is also open to joining the Stamford Bridge club.
The Blues are expected to strengthen at the heart of their defence this summer after an inconsistent campaign in which injuries and underwhelming performances exposed the rearguard.
Lacroix has emerged as one of the club’s leading targets following an impressive season in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s backline struggled whenever Levi Colwill was unavailable.
Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Mamadou Sarr all failed to establish themselves as dependable options over the course of the season.
