ATLANTA — Josh Heupel and Faizon Brandon can rely on Tennessee's defense to carry it through some rough patches — at least to a certain point.
That was apparent in the way the 18th-ranked Vols beat Georgia Tech 45-24 amid a crowd with plenty of orange at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sept. 12.
Heupel's offense didn't have to light up the scoreboard or stat sheet to win. And Brandon, the freshman quarterback, didn't have to reel off eye-popping highlights for the Vols (2-0) to protect a lead on the road over the Yellow Jackets (0-2).
They just needed to do enough and trust in Jim Knowles, the defensive wiz that Heupel hired as coordinator in the offseason. His squad carried the Vols through some critical lulls.
Knowles' defense scored a touchdown on Dejuan Lane's pick-6. It had another red-zone stop that yielded only a field goal. Jeremiah Telander's interception prevented points before halftime. And the Vols stopped Georgia Tech's rally on fourth down at the goal line early in the fourth quarter.

The Cooper Companies Inc. (NASDAQ:COO), a leading medical device company, announced its third quarter fiscal 2026 results on September 9. The desperate pleas for air cover from Yemeni generals started coming mid-morning on Thursday. An advance by the Iran-backed Houthis toward Yemen's strategic port city of Mocha was in full swing, and backup support from chief ally Saudi Arabia was nowhere in sight.

"The competitor in me, who I am to the core, I want to say F*** everybody. You don't think I'm able to put myself in that category? Why can't I put myself in that category for another five more years? That's the mentality I have," Barkley said.

Meanwhile, markets await a likely European Central Bank interest rate rise and the first of the week's U.S. inflation updates on Thursday, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's bond buyback salvo appeared to flop after details of the operation disappointed.
Crude oil closed at its highest level since late May above $100 per barrel on Wednesday, and 10-year Treasury yields hit their highest in three years, fast homing in on the 5% milestone.

The comedian, whose father, New York City firefighter Scott Davidson, died responding to the Sept. 11 attacks, reflected on how becoming a dad himself has changed his perspective.
"I thought, 'Oh, he was an old guy. He's 33,'" Davidson told The New York Post in an interview published on Sept. 8. "But now I'm there, and I have a kid, and that would be like my kid not having her dad."

India needs to expand biofuel production and consumption to boost its energy security as crude oil prices soar amid the Middle East crisis, according to Tarun Kapoor, an adviser in India's Prime Minister's Office.
"The future of biofuels is about maximizing value from every available resource," Kapoor said at the India Sugar and Bio-Energy Conference.
"From ethanol and compressed biogas to new applications in transport, industry and energy, we must expand the market and fully utilize the capacity we have created," the PM office's adviser said.
India, the world's third-largest crude oil importer, which depended on the Middle East for nearly half of its crude oil imports before the war, has been paying a high price for alternative crude supplies since the Iran war began.
India launched in June a new fuel blend with an 85% ethanol component as part of the fuel flex mobility program to reduce dependence on imported oil.

The U.S. dollar remains flat amid higher treasury yields driven by soaring energy costs. The euro zone also remains front and center. The ECB is going to hike rates by 25 bps today and mail the deposit rate at 2.50%. The consensus in the market is that the ECB will not hike again this year. Sen. John Fetterman has faced a tide of public criticism from fellow Democrats as he stakes out lonely ground as a critic of the far-left wing of his party — and another wave rolled in Wednesday after he made a surprise video appearance at the Republican midterm convention.
So far, however, his Senate colleagues haven't joined the pile-on.
Democratic senators are staying above the fray as they work to flip the majority in November amid constant speculation that the 57-year-old Pennsylvanian could trigger a nightmare scenario by leaving the party and caucusing with the GOP.
Some have worked to publicly bat down suggestions that Fetterman could abandon Democrats for the final two years of his term — something he has denied considering, even as he continues to raise eyebrows with his outspoken support of Israel, bashing of democratic socialists and close relationships with Senate Republicans.
"John Fetterman is a friend and an important member of our caucus. It's a waste of energy to get spun up about his voting record or place in our party — he votes with us 90 percent of the time," Democratic Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont, who is close with Fetterman, said in a statement to POLITICO before the convention appearance. "We need a big tent if we're going to win in November."
