CAIRO (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Iranians rallied Friday in a government-organized show of defiance after months of war, pledging their readiness to take up arms in the biggest such demonstration since the United States and Israel attacked in February.
Iran's government has sought to rally the people and stress national unity, even as the economy worsens under a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and new U.S. sanctions. On Friday, it claimed another attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway it has sought to control since the start of the war.
Estimates varied of the number of people volunteering to receive limited military training and defend the country in an effort described as "Janfaday-e Iran," or the "ones who sacrifice their lives for Iran." They marched through downtown Tehran in combat uniform, carrying flags, as onlookers cheered.
For days, state media have encouraged Iranians to join the campaign, saying training with **** ault rifles would begin soon. The volunteers would be an additional layer of security to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and the Basij militia, which has played a key role in quashing anti-government protests.

The Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback on Tuesday in the least-surprising news of the NFL offseason. Despite the Vikings branding this as a "quarterback battle," it was always Murray's job — and that's become apparent in recent days during training camp. Now it's caused unnecessary drama, as some onlookers at training camp believe that not only was McCarthy neck-and-neck in the battle, but that in recent days he out-performed the No. 1 overall pick who Minnesota signed this offseason.
There is no doubt that McCarthy was bad last year across his 10 games, and that Murray's veteran experience made him the clear-cut answer for the job, but it was covered in unnecessary consternation. The Vikings knew that Murray would be their starter when they signed him, and if there wasn't some sort of promise that he would be the starter, then Murray would have signed elsewhere. However, the Minnesota front office wanted to ease the eventual benching of McCarthy with the charade that this was really anyone's job, when it wasn't.
The attempt to pretend this was an open battle was predicated on the Vikings' belief that Murray would win the job easily, but that was complicated by McCarthy playing quite well in camp up to this point, especially recently where it seemed like he was more comfortable in the new-look Vikings offense, especially on deep routes. It also raises questions of the team's timing, and whether or not the decision to announce Murray as the starter right now was an effort to stop the bleeding after a weekend where Murray struggled, while McCarthy took strides ahead in the battle.
If there's one thing about this Vikings team it's that they routinely have messaging issues, almost as if its left and right hands struggle to be in concert. This was the case during Minnesota's so-called "competitive rebuild," which saw the Vikings attempt to rebuild its roster and be a successful playoff team in the process — not really achieving either, to the point where the franchise has been locked in draft purgatory without a good way to take the step forward. This was further accentuated this offseason with Justin Jefferson, who reportedly courted Murray to come and play with him, being forced to make public statements about how it didn't matter who the QB was, and that he didn't have a preference in the battle.
There's always subterfuge in the NFL when it comes to making decisions in-season, but far too often the Vikings shroud their offseason plans in a cloak-and-dagger way that makes it feel as if the team itself doesn't really have a plan. A throated, enthusiastic approach to Murray's arrival, and naming him the starter from Day 1 would have felt better than what's taken place. As for how McCarthy is handling all this: Look no further than Adam Schefter's tweet, which might as well have come directly from McCarthy's agent.

Iran publicly hanged two young men Tuesday over their alleged roles in January's nationwide anti-government protests, as onlookers chanted "Dishonorable, dishonorable!" before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled Iranian opposition group.
Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were hanged Tuesday in Isfahan's Shahid Alikhani Square — where authorities alleged they committed offenses connected to the Jan. 8 protests, according to the NCRI and Iranian state media.
The NCRI said onlookers condemned the executions before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The opposition group also said security personnel had been deployed on rooftops and surrounding streets.

Aston Villa have launched an ambitious loan bid for Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho. Former Miami Heat teammates Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro got into an altercation on Friday morning on a practice court in a Las Vegas hotel, with new details now coming out about the confrontation and lingering issues.
ESPN's Shams Charania first reported on Friday night that Adebayo and Herro got into a physical altercation on the practice court. Adebayo reportedly approached Herro regarding comments his former teammate made on social media, with the confrontation escalating into a physical altercation in front of onlookers.
Herro, now with the Milwaukee Bucks, was seated courtside at the Thomas & Mack Center ahead of Friday's summer league matchup between Miami and Milwaukee. He greeted several of his former team members and new Bucks teammates before the altercation with Adebayo.
It all stemmed from a few weeks ago, when leaked screenshots of direct messages sent by Herro took aim at his former teammate. Among them, the young guard questioned why an "elite defender be making $60M a year?" when other former Miami stars didn't get lucrative contract extensions.
Heat reporter Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald shared on X that there had been "some level of resentment" from several former Miami players that the organization seemed to center itself around Adebayo. Not only did the All-Star center land a lucrative three-year, $166 million contract extension in the summer of 2024, but his name also never surfaced in NBA trade rumors. Evidently, that struck a nerve with some of his former teammates.

Unfortunately for the former TCU Horned Frogs star, she is dealing with a minor setback. Miles is set to miss her first-ever game due to a right calf injury in the WNBA on Monday, July 6. In a report by WNBA insider Cassidy Hettesheimer on X, Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve explained the decision behind sitting Miles out. According to the tenured tactician, Reeve and her staff are making sure that Miles' injury does not worsen.
"Those that were in tune to the last game, you know, she mentioned feeling some cramping, and you know, I think ultimately it wasn't a cramp, and so we're kind of taking the next step of imaging and that sort of thing, and trying to get a final answer, exactly what we're dealing with," Reeve was quoted as saying.
The Lynx are taking on coach Rachid Meziane's Connecticut Sun on their home floor without Miles. Coach Reeve and company will have to rely on veterans such as forward Natasha Howard and guard Courtney Williams for now, especially since Miles is leading the team in scoring in her first year. Prior to the Minnesota Lynx taking on the Connecticut Sun, they lost to the New York Liberty on Friday by 13 points, 99-86, in away territory. There were many onlookers for the game, since it was a rematch of the 2024 WNBA Finals. Despite the loss, Olivia Miles still put up 14 points, five rebounds, five **** ists, and a steal in 26 minutes of playing time. There are some college football commitments that are more entertaining than others, and we can say without a doubt that 5-star offensive tackle Caden Moss's commitment to the Buckeyes was one that was pretty fun, at least if you weren't one of the programs he trolled in picking to give his verbal pledge to Ohio State.

Ohio State and other Big Ten schools have been able to go down in the heart of SEC country as of late and do what they have not been able to do in the past, get the best from sweet tea and grits country to come up north to enjoy Bratwurst and cheese.

HONG KONG (AP) — In the race between the U.S. and China to develop artificial intelligence, the battle over hardware and computing power is heating up as Chinese companies like Huawei overtake global industry leaders like Nvidia in their home market.
Jensen Huang, the CEO of computer chip giant Nvidia, was mobbed by onlookers as he hit the streets for the "zhajiangmian" noodles while visiting Beijing during U.S. President Donald Trump's May summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. But his celebrity status has not translated into success in selling Nvidia's advanced chips in China.
Controls imposed by Washington on exports of advanced technology due to national security concerns initially stalled sales of Nvidia's advanced H200 AI chips there. By the time Huang won a reprieve, with Trump agreeing to their sale, Beijing had switched to encouraging use of domestically designed chips made by local rivals led by Huawei.
Huang has acknowledged that the U.S. has lost its edge in China's advanced AI chips market as Chinese competitors have become "giants."
"Well, we were in China for 30 years, and before the export control banned Nvidia out of China we had about 95% market share, and so we were competing just fine," he said in a recent interview with The ****** ociated Press.
