The Miami Heat were among the teams Ben Simmons was interested in joining before agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Sacramento Kings. But the Heat reportedly passed on signing him despite their current priority of adding point guard depth.
According to Ira Winderman, the veteran senior writer with the Sun Sentinel, the Miami Heat turned down Ben Simmons because he is no longer a proven win-now player.
"At a certain point, a team in win-now mode has to draw a valuation line between players who can be developed/reclaimed and those needed to be able to contribute in the moment, without questions of whether they are healthy enough or still skilled enough."

The Boston Celtics have a long tradition of giving back to the city they play their NBA basketball in, and reserve forward Jordan Walsh helped keep that tradition going with a back-to-school event held this past Thursday (Sep. 3) that saw 15 youths from the area treated to a shopping spree at a local sporting goods store, as well as free haircuts from ****** le City Barbers and free sneakers from New Balance.

The adoption of a new college eligibility system — an age-based, five-year model designed to eliminate waivers, redshirts and roster logjams created by a surge of athletes in their mid-20s sticking in school — has been furiously challenged in the courts by members of the 2022 high school class who want a fifth year of eligibility, too.
The new eligibility system, which is replacing one that allowed four seasons of competition over five years with no age restrictions, excludes student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year.
That bucket is filled with athletes who first enrolled in 2022, following high school graduation. As of an Aug. 21 report from Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, more than 150 athletes had filed a total of 18 lawsuits across 15 states. Wins against the NCAA in state courts have allowed athletes to return to college, including football players who were in NFL camps this offseason.
The phenomenon has bewildered NFL coaches, and, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the league is clarifying its eligibility rules on Wednesday.
Here's what Schefter outlined in his report: If a player signed to an NFL contract is cut, they are a free agent, meaning they can sign with another NFL team, a CFL team or return to college. But even if a player cut by an NFL team returns to college this year, they won't be subject to a future NFL Draft because they will still be considered a free agent. For the last five years, I have cleared my schedule for every A'ja Wilson versus Breanna Stewart matchup — and there have been many. They are the two defining players of this WNBA generation, with a combined six MVPs and six **** les between them, and the faces of USA Basketball. They relish the competition of playing against the best at their position and raise their levels when they meet.
The Wilson-Stewart era is far from over. Wilson is on pace to be MVP yet again, while Stewart is putting together yet another All-WNBA season. Although the Las Vegas Aces sit higher in the standings, the New York Liberty have mostly gotten the best of them this season, including in the Commissioner's Cup final. A playoff series between them (a fifth matchup in seven seasons) would be high-level theater.
It would be near-impossible for another individual rivalry to reach those heights — again, look at all the hardware the two have in their trophy cases — but it was fun to get a look at the future during the aptly-named rivals week. Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark have a lot more winning to do to reach the Wilson-Stewart level, but they do have the right ingredients in place. They're elite players at essentially the same position who came up together through USA Basketball; like Stewart and Wilson, they each were the MVP at a U-19 World Cup. They both had outstanding college careers, and now they are trying to compete for **** les in the WNBA.
Bueckers and Clark have met only three times in the pros, and the first was mostly forgettable. The last two, however, have been worth the wait. The third quarter of Friday's game between Dallas and Indiana was a true highlight, as these two unselfish guards kept trying to one-up the other as bucket-getters. Six of their baskets were immediately followed by points from the other, including a very fun stretch in which Clark hit a layup, Bueckers followed with a pull-up 3, Clark responded with a pull-up jumper and Bueckers hit another shot in the midrange. Not a lot of passing from the nominal point guards, but the budding seeds of a longer rivalry.
Ideally, the Wings and Fever will meet in the playoffs (with Azzi Fudd and Jessica Shepard both healthy by that point) and give this matchup the stakes it deserves. For now, it's an enjoyable undercard to the Wilson-Stewart rivalry.

Data center and infrastructure sales, part of the Industrial bucket, reached $16.3 million, or 10.6% of total revenue, up 60% from a year earlier. On a trailing 12-month basis, those sales hit $57.1 million, up 69% year over year, tied to power quality products like harmonic filters and line reactors that help data centers manage increasingly dense electrical loads.
Profitability improved just as sharply. Operating income rose to $15.6 million from $11.7 million, pushing operating margin to 10.2%, the highest level in roughly a decade. Net income jumped 85% to $10.4 million, or $0.61 per diluted share, while adjusted EBITDA rose 18% to $23.7 million. Backlog ended the quarter at $298 million, with most of it expected to convert to revenue within three to nine months, giving management a clearer read on the back half of the year.
The Vehicle market was the exception to an otherwise strong quarter, with revenue falling 7% on weaker powersports demand. Aerospace & Defense growth of 16% also came despite the previously announced cancellation of the M10 Booker program, a reminder that individual defense contracts can disappear even as the broader segment grows. Management itself cautioned that the record gross margin benefited from favorable mix, and mix can be lumpy, meaning quarter-to-quarter variability should be expected even if the structural trend holds.
Restructuring and business realignment costs, tied partly to the Dothan facility transition, came in at $600,000 for the quarter and are expected to total $2 million to $3 million for the full year. Inventory turnover slipped slightly to 3.1x from 3.2x in 2025, reflecting deliberate investments in inventory and strategic material buys to support growth and hedge against tariff uncertainty. The company also noted it has submitted or expects to submit about $1.3 million in tariff refund claims tied to IEEPA, but hasn't recorded any receivable given the uncertainty around timing and amount.

While Toast had been dumped in the AI loser bucket with other software companies, that narrative makes even less sense for Toast. First, its focus is on a sprawling industry of millions of small and medium-sized restaurant operators that aren't particularly tech savvy. Frontier model companies aren't going to look to put together the salesforce to sell into this market, and these companies aren't going to vibe code their own solutions.
Meanwhile, Toast's own AI-powered solutions have been gaining traction. Its AI-powered marketing agentic AI tool Toast IQ Grow is on track to become its fastest-ever solution to reach $10 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), as restaurants are seeing great outcomes with it. In addition, the company is looking to expand its agentic AI platform into other areas like payroll, scheduling, tax, and bookkeeping. Things like dynamic menu and margin optimization tools, and predictive labor scheduling can have big impacts for restaurant operators that survive on slim margins, and these are the types of modules that can really help grow its ARPU (average revenue per user) over the long term.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Puerto Rico's capital and surrounding communities woke up without running water as a massive rationing measure took effect Friday. It comes amid a severe drought on top of shortages due to infrastructure issues on the island.
"It's brutal," San Juan resident Gloriany Baba told CBS News in Spanish. "It's unbelievable to live through this today."
Residents were seen filling up jugs and buckets with water ahead of the rationing, which affects more than 180,000 customer accounts — meaning households and businesses — in San Juan and six other municipalities. Customers were divided into two groups that will alternate not having water for at least 48 hours at a time.
Government officials have not said when the rationing will end and have warned the outages could be extended to 72 hours at a time.
In San Juan, July was the driest month in more than 120 years and the second hottest on record. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, about 36% of Puerto Rico is facing a severe drought, and another 32% is in a moderate drought.

Analyzing programs' overall point differentials from the prior season is one way I've been sizing up Notre Dame's opponents heading into the 2026-27 college football season. The opponents ended up being bucketed into three groups:
Positive Differential: Those programs who had a positive overall differential at the end of the 2025-26 CFB season.
Negative Differential (Moderate): Those programs who had a moderately negative overall differential, ranging between -63 and -124, at the end of the 2025-26 CFB season.
Negative Differential (Significant): Those programs who have a significantly negative overall differential, ranging between -157 and -180, at the end of the 2025-26 CFB season.
The Hurricanes finished the 2025-26 season with a +258 overall differential. They put up 459 points, compared with 237 points by opponents. Their largest statistical win was a +42 rout of fellow Florida institution, Bethune-Cookman, and their most significant losses were two -6 differential games dropped to the ACC's SMU and the eventual national champion, Indiana.

The rivalry between Purdue and Indiana has lost some steam in recent years, but Purdue Boilermakers athletic director Tommy McClellan stoked the fire in his initial press conference. He took a shot at Indiana football, saying, "We are here to win championships. If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana."
It's a confusing jab to make at this point, since the Indiana Hoosiers are coming off a 2025 season where they went undefeated national champions. The Purdue vs. Indiana rivalry, also known as the "Old Oaken Bucket" rivalry, has been lopsided as of late. Although Purdue has the series lead, with a 77-44-6 record all-time, they've lost the last two games 66-0 (2024) and 56-3 (2025). McClellan and the Boilermakers will get to walk the walk against Indiana on Nov. 28, 2026.

A TikToker called out KFC after discovering he only got 35 pieces of chicken popcorn after paying for 50. His outrage sparked debate, leaving many wondering: is shrinkflation hitting fast food? And is it on the rise? One account addressed the possibility.
Famous influencer darkandemomitskiboy told KFC he wasn't planning on getting "scammed" in a heated TikTok video. He wanted to count the pieces in his 50-piece bucket of chicken popcorn to ensure he was getting what he paid for.
He also told viewers that if they didn't deliver on the number, he'd personally visit the outlet. He also got himself fries, a famous bowl, three chicken tenders with some gravy, and for beverages he got Pepsi, **** e, and a Sprite.
The TikToker also ordered an extra portion of the chicken popcorn, because he claimed he doesn't like being scammed. He counted the pieces one by one.
Halfway through, he noticed that the quantity was a far cry from the 50 pieces he was promised. He tapped on the bucket and said, "KFC, KFC?" But continued to count until the number stopped at 35.
