MEDELLÍN, Colombia (AP) — After a brief stint with MLS side Minnesota United in the United States, Colombia soccer international James Rodríguez decided to return home on Thursday.
Rodríguez, a former Real Madrid midfielder who was a free agent, will play for Atlético Nacional, the most decorated club that is based in Medellín, in his home nation.
Atlético Nacional did not disclose the financial details of the deal or the duration of it.
Rodríguez, 35, has bounced around since 2022, with stints with Olympiacos in Greece, Sao Paulo in Brazil, Rayo Vallecano in Spain, Club León in Mexico and Minnesota United in the MLS, where he played just six matches in the first semester of the year.
The midfielder helped lead Colombia to the Copa America final in 2024, the country's first such appearance in 23 years. He has 31 goals in 131 career international matches with Colombia.

The close of the free-agent market caused a real media stir in the Liga BetPlay. The boards of the country's top clubs are rushing key negotiations ahead of the registration deadline set for September 11.
James Rodríguez is reportedly finalizing details in Medellín to undergo medical tests and sign with Atlético Nacional. Meanwhile, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado has reached a verbal agreement with Millonarios FC to take medicals in Bogotá and complete his return to the local league at age 38.
The day took an unexpected turn with the possible return of Jackson Martínez. At 39, and after retiring in 2020, the striker is considering a formal offer from Independiente Medellín with the approval of coach Amaranto Perea.

Santos FC fought hard and applied plenty of pressure early in the derby, but could not overturn Palmeiras' large advantage. After a 0-0 draw this Wednesday (2) at Vila Belmiro, they are out of the 2026 Copa do Brasil. Peixe did try to break through and created chances, but their rivals knew how to protect the result after winning the first leg of the quarterfinals 3-0 on the 26th at Nubank Parque in São Paulo, thus securing a place in the semifinals.
Out of the national knockout tournament, coach Cuca's squad now shifts focus to the 2026 Brazilian Championship. Riding high after beating Corinthians 1-0 last Sunday (30) at Neo Química Arena, Alvinegro Praiano now aims to climb even higher in the table and move away from the danger zone.
This Sunday (6), Santos FC visits Internacional at Beira-Rio Stadium at 4 p.m. for the 26th round of the Brasileirão. If they can win in Porto Alegre, Peixe could open up as much as a seven-point gap from the relegation zone and start dreaming of bigger things in the national competition.
Santos FC now turns its full focus to the Brasileirão (Photo: Raul Baretta/ Santos FC)
The match – Driven by the "fire corridor" on arrival and by a roaring Vila Belmiro, Santos came out on top of Palmeiras. Just 4 minutes in, Igor Vinicius reached the edge of the box and struck with his left foot, forcing a save from Carlos Miguel.

Today, August 30, Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox is celebrating his 83rd birthday.
The Celtic legend scored 277 goals in 589 games for Celtic, and up until recently he was the club's most decorated player with 25 major honours. He has only recently been surpassed by Callum McGregor (26) and James Forrest (28).
Bobby's impressive roll of honour reads as 11 League ***** les, eight Scottish Cups, five League Cups and, of course, the European Cup when he was part of the legendary Celtic side which defeated Inter Milan in Lisbon's Estadio Nacional on May 25, 1967 to become the Kings of Europe.
And as the Celtic Family wishes Bobby a very happy birthday, we take a brief look at the incredible career of a legendary figure in Celtic's long and illustrious history…
Born in Saltcoats, Bobby was the farthest-flung of the Lisbon Lions – hence the ***** le of his autobiography – Thirty Miles from Paradise. Bobby, of course, has remained a Saltcoats Bhoy to this day. In his book, Bobby describes an almost idyllic childhood beside the sea and, apart from his six-month spell with Houston Hurricane in 1978, he has stayed in the town his entire life. 'I had a great upbringing,' he later told the Celtic View. 'We weren't the richest family in the world, but I didn't want for much, although all I really wanted was a ball at my feet anyway.'

The promotion play-offs offer two spots in Série C. The other tie is between Goiatuba-GO and São José-RS, who drew 0-0 in the first match. One player who signed for Liverpool this summer is reportedly attempting to persuade a defensive midfielder on the Reds' radar to join him at Anfield.
Last month, the Merseyside club confirmed that they'd agreed a deal to sign Colombian attacking midfielder Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional in his homeland, with the teenager moving to England next year after he's turned 18.
The youngster is now understood to have taken on some ad-hoc agency duties by trying to convince a friend of his to follow him to L4.
According to information shared on VBar Caracol (via Sport Witness), Liverpool sent scouts to watch Matias Orozco during Deportivo Cali's 2-2 draw against Inter de Bogota on Sunday, with the midfielder understood to have played well before being forced off with a minor injury in the second half.
During that livestream, it was claimed that Martinez has been trying to convince the 18-year-old (who's a close personal friend) to join the Reds.

Atlético drew 0-0 with Internacional this Saturday (22) at Beira-Rio, in the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship.
With a heavily changed lineup, and away from Belo Horizonte, Galo earned another important point in the competition.
The result extended Galo's unbeaten run to 11 matches. The team was coming off a draw with Bragantino in the Copa Sudamericana, a result that secured qualification for the quarterfinals, and now it also keeps the streak alive in the Brasileirão.
With an eye on the derby against Cruzeiro in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals, head coach Eduardo Domínguez opted for an alternative lineup. Names that have been important throughout the season were rested, while players with fewer minutes were given an opportunity.
Among the new faces was Fred, who made his debut in the Galo shirt. The midfielder came on in the second half and took part in the closing stages of the match.

Internacional and Atlético-MG are drawing 0-0 this Saturday (22), in the 24th round of the 2026 Brasileirão.
Despite the cold in Porto Alegre, the first half was heated at the Beira-Rio Giant.
It started with an indirect free kick awarded by the referee when center-back Ruan poorly played the ball back to Everson, and the Galo goalkeeper had to use his hand to stop Inter from scoring.
But the biggest highlight of the first half was provided by Alan Minda.
The Ecuadorian Galo forward came close to producing a likely Puskás Award contender after dribbling past the goalkeeper and leaving two opponents on the ground before shooting.

Rodrigo Mora's lawyer warns the player 'is sad and suffering' that FC Porto won't give the all clear for his transfer to Roma. 'He wants to play and realised he's a third choice for Francesco Farioli.'
The negotiations between the two clubs had seemingly reached a breakthrough on Tuesday evening, on loan for €7-10m with an option to buy for a further €40-43m at the end of the season.

That would become an obligation if certain conditions were met, and this is where it all ground to a halt, because the clubs have fundamentally different ideas on what should activate that clause.

Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG will compete for a spot in the Copa Betano do Brasil semifinalCredits: Gustavo Aleixo/Cruzeiro
CBF held the draw for the quarterfinals of the 2026 Copa do Brasil this Tuesday (11), in Rio de Janeiro, which will feature, for the first time since 1989, three state derby matchups. On one side of the bracket, the competition will have the clashes between Internacional x Grêmio and Cruzeiro x Atlético-MG. On the other, Vasco x Vitória and Palmeiras x Santos.
Of these four matchups, two have previously decided the tournament: the Minas Gerais derby, Atlético-MG x Cruzeiro, in 2014, when Galo were crowned champions, and the São Paulo derby, Palmeiras x Santos, in 2015, when Alviverde lifted the trophy.
Historically, all four matchups have taken place before. Grêmio and Inter faced each other only once, in 1992, in the quarterfinals, when Colorado advanced on penalties. Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG, in addition to the 2014 final, met in the quarterfinals in 2019 and 2025, with one victory for each side.

Win over Grêmio moved Botafogo closer to the top 8 in the Brasileirão U-17Credits: Angelo Pieretti/Grêmio FBPA
Botafogo beat Grêmio 3-1 on Monday night (10) at Airton Ferreira da Silva, in Eldorado do Sul (RS), in the opening match of the 11th round of the Brasileirão U-17. The result, secured with goals from Bernardo Germano (2) and Gustavo Xisto (1), left Glorioso just one point behind América-MG, who sit in eighth place with 16 points.
The top eight teams in the standings will secure a place in the quarterfinals of the competition. To stay close to the qualification zone, the club from General Severiano will have to rely on slip-ups from Santos, who have 14 points, and Internacional and São Paulo, both on 13.
The team from Rio Grande do Sul, who pulled one back through Benjamin Santos, remained in 15th place and stayed on 10 points, but could be overtaken this round.

Six matches brought the 22nd round of the Brasileirão to a close this Sunday (9).
Several teams extended their respective winless runs in the competition.
That is the case for Vasco, Internacional and Fluminense (six games each), São Paulo (eight), and Chapecoense, who have only won in the opening round.
There was, for example, a stumble by the leaders and then wins for the teams right behind them.
The coming midweek will bring Copa Sudamericana and Libertadores challenges for THIRTEEN teams.

Palmeiras and Internacional face off this Sunday (9), at 4 p.m. (Brasília time), at Nubank Parque, in a match valid for the 22nd round of the 2026 Brasileirão.
The game is the famous "clash of opposites." At least when looking at their current positions in the table.
Verdão leads the championship with 47 points and is chasing a second straight win to stay comfortably at the top and, who knows, take advantage of another Flamengo slip-up to pull further ahead.
Colorado, meanwhile, has not won in five rounds in the Brasileirão and, because of that, sits at the top of the relegation zone (17th place) with 22 points.
Compared to the last match (a 2-1 loss to Corinthians, but qualification for the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals), coach Paulo Pezzolano opted for just one change for Inter: Félix Torres comes in for Mercado.

At Neo Química Arena, Corinthians beat Internacional 2-1 this Thursday (6) in the second leg of the 2026 Copa do Brasil round of 16.
However, because they won the first leg 2-0, Colorado secured a place in the next round of the tournament and remains alive in the dream of a second ****** le (they lifted the trophy in 1992).
The entire first half was practically one big "attack versus defense" battle.
However, even with their attacking dominance and control of possession, Timão relied on crosses (10 in total) to try to find center-forward Pedro Raul in the box.
The strategy worked to some extent, after all, it was through the air that Corinthians opened the scoring.

Internacional, champions of the 1st U-15 Copa do BrasilCredits: Rafael Ribeiro / CBF
In an exciting final between two top teams from Brazil's youth ranks, Internacional beat Palmeiras 3-1 this Saturday (August 1) to become the champions of the first U-15 Copa do Brasil. The match was played at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis (RJ), and was attended by CBF president Samir Xaud.
Asafe, Kayki, and Gustavo Fahmer scored the goals in the win. Maicon scored for Palmeiras. At an intense pace, both teams fought for every ball with grit and determination. They also stood out for their creativity, dribbling, and plays that showed technique and great skill.
At the start of the first half, Palmeiras took control of the game and opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Maicon, after a run down the right by Gabriel Bueno, who got past his marker. It looked as though Palmeiras' second goal would not take long, such was the team's dominance.
But Inter changed the course of the match. They started moving the ball more quickly and equalized in the 26th minute with a goal by Asafe after a corner kick. Then, in the 38th minute, they completed the comeback with a fine finish from Kaique from outside the box.

The fake audio used by Internacional's legal department in the defense of center-back Victor Gabriel ended up carrying decisive weight in the punishment handed down by the STJD.
This was the content that "blew up" on social media (see below).
The voting was already underway when auditor Aline Jatahy questioned the authenticity of the material released by Inter.
Messages were already circulating on social media about the likelihood that the content was not genuine, since it came from a parody page called "O VAR Brasileiro."
That information reached the members of the STJD's Sixth Disciplinary Commission. And the situation changed, as reported by Uol.

It’s a particularly cruel way to make a departure official.
After recently terminating the contract of their Brazilian center-back Léo Coelho, Amazonas FC went even further by posting an Instagram video compiling his biggest blunders, positioning errors, and own goals.
It was a deliberate act of pettiness from the Brazilian third-division club (Brasileiro Série C), in response to the labor claim filed by Coelho, who is demanding nearly 8 million reais (around 1.3 million euros) for unpaid wages and other contractual breaches.
The 33-year-old defender had arrived in the Amazon region last August with the status of an experienced player after spells with Uruguayan giants Nacional and Peñarol. But things quickly turned sour.
While some praised the originality of the move, others saw it as a blatant lack of respect.

Amazonas FC "broke new ground" by officially announcing the termination of center-back Léo Coelho's contract after he had taken the club to court.
In addition to the statement announcing the end of the deal, the current 14th-placed team in Série C posted a video featuring the 33-year-old defender's "worst moments."
There are five clips in which Léo Coelho ends up "helping out" during opponents' attacks.
The player is seeking around R$ 8 million from the Manaus-based club over unpaid wages.
After spells with Uruguayan giants Nacional and Peñarol, he joined Amazonas in August last year.
