Defending champions Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner top the 2026 U.S. Open entry list for tennis' final Grand Slam of the year.
Sabalenka is the two-time champion and is hoping to become the first woman to win three consecutive U.S. Open crowns since 2012-2014, when Serena Williams won the last of her six ******* les at Flushing Meadows.
Four other former women's U.S. Open champions are in the field, with 2024 winner Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek (2022), Naomi Osaka (2018, 2020) and Emma Raducanu (2021), looking to win their first Slam of the year.
There will be eight wild cards and 16 qualifiers among the 128 main-draw entries. It is not yet known whether Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, will compete in New York after making a return appearance at Wimbledon earlier this summer. Williams lost in Wimbledon's first round to Australian Maya Joint.
The three women who won Grand Slams this year are also in the field, led by Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, who won at Roland Garros, and Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova.

The Australian beat fellow qualifier Marcos Giron of the United States 6-3 6-4 in 74 minutes.

World number 10 Taylor Fritz captured his 250th hardcourt victory on Monday by defeating Belgium's Zizou Bergs in the first round of the ATP and WTA Washington Open.
The American third seed, seeking his 11th ATP tour ******* le and first Eastbourne last year, needed only 79 minutes to complete a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Fritz will next face either countryman Tommy Paul or Poland's Kamil Majchrzak.
"He had a few break chances, but when I served out the first and went up a break in the second, I felt like the momentum was on my side," Fritz said.

The tournament director of the Canadian Open says changes need to be made to the "demanding schedule" of players after Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic pulled out of the Masters 1000 event.
Sinner, who beat Alexander Zverev to win the Wimbledon ******* le this month, said he had withdrawn from the ATP tournament, which takes place from 2-13 August in Montreal, to prioritise his health.
Carlos Alcaraz will also be absent from the Canadian Open as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that has kept him out since April.
"We are obviously very disappointed that Jannik and Novak won't be joining us in Montreal this year, especially after they also withdrew from last year's tournament in Toronto," said the Canadian Open's tournament director Valerie Tetreault.
"We respect their decisions and understand that, with such a demanding schedule, players' health must remain the priority.

At this moment in tennis, the three biggest names on the men's side are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. None of them will be in attendance for this year's National Bank Open in Montreal, which is in theory a mandatory tournament.
Tennis Canada confirmed Friday that Sinner and Djokovic have withdrawn from the tournament, roughly one week before its start date on Aug. 1. Alcaraz was already known to be out with the wrist injury that has sidelined him since clay season.
It is the second straight year Sinner and Djokovic have skipped the tournament.
Sinner has played only one tournament (his successful Wimbledon ******* le defense) since his cramp-induced crashout at Roland-Garros in May. He didn't cite a specific injury or health reason for the withdrawal:
"After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal," Sinner explained in a statement. The tennis tour is heading into one of its busiest stretches of the season, with the North American hardcourt swing just around the corner. The sport's biggest stars are already ramping up their preparations for the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open. Home favorites Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe have arrived in Washington, D.C. for the ATP 500 event (July 27-August 2).
Meanwhile, another former US Open semifinalist, Jack Draper, has joined the field in search of redemption. He is accompanied by three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
Shelton has arrived in the US capital after a rather forgettable Wimbledon campaign, where he was sent packing in the first round by qualifier Otto Virtanen. The American has produced mixed results, winning just one match at the ATP Masters 1000 level this season and just five matches across the three completed Grand Slam events.
He has, however, won three ******* les, one on each surface, including two at the 500 level (Dallas and Munich). At the Mubadala DC Open, Shelton, who accepted a wildcard, is defending 200 ranking points after reaching the semifinals last year. He would be hoping for an even better run as he builds momentum ahead of his Canadian Open ******* le defense.
On Thursday, July 23, the American was stopped training at the venue alongside Tiafoe. The players shared a laugh as they put in the hard yards under the sun. Interestingly, Shelton was seen wearing a left-arm sleeve.

Rules are to Wimbledon like lipsticks are to a cosmetics shop: There are lots. After the distracting champagne corks that kept popping through the 2025 final match between Jannick Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, with one landing at Sinner's feet before he was about to serve, we expect a possible ban on mid-match cork popping to come into effect one of these days.
Then, of course, there are the rules of the game, but the rules that we find most interesting are the fashion ones. For example, players at Wimbledon have to wear all-white outfits (except for women, who can wear dark undershorts beneath their skirts). While there aren't technically guidelines for guests' outfits other than a ban on bold logos and political slogans, it's well-known that you should look pulled together if you're attending a match.
Ah, but there is an exception, and that's for those sitting in the royal box, who need to adhere to the tennis club's rules of dresses or skirts for women and suits and ties for men. NB: Though it's not fashion protocol, there is also a rule that states children aren't allowed in the royal box on centre court. The exception? The royal offspring, naturally, back during the 2025 final, that meant that Prince George and Princess Charlotte sat alongside their parents, Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales. Folks immediately noticed something interesting about Charlotte's look, though: her nail polish, which didn't seem to carry on one specific royal tradition.

Norwich City are not interested in selling any of their first team players, says head coach Philippe Clement.
Full-back Kellen Fisher has been linked with a possible move to Premier League newcomers Hull City and missed Wednesday night's goalless draw at AFC Wimbledon in the Canaries' latest pre-season friendly.
"It's very simple, in a game we played yesterday (Tuesday) he jumped and landed on a team-mate and twisted his ankle so he was not able to play," Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk.
"It's clear for all the players, there is a clear plan - ***** ody will leave who is a potential starting 11 player. I know it's the time of the year where there are no games and no big stories so people like to make stories but there are no stories about that."

The U.S. Tennis ****** ociation announced the direct entry lists Tuesday for the final Grand Slam tournament of the season. Based on the July 20 rankings on the WTA and ATP Tours, the cutoff was No. 102 for the women and No. 101 for the men.

We have been on Tommy Paul and Paige Lorenze wedding watch since Wimbledon ended. A big hint that the wedding is imminent is a recent social media post featuring Paul and a few familiar faces, namely his tennis peers Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Reilly Opelka playing a game on grass.
Some of those same faces were just playing on the Wimbledon grass. Though we cannot recognize everyone in the video, it looks like a fun start to the festivities.

Another Wimbledon is in the books, with Jannik Sinner successfully defending his men’s ****** le and Linda Noskova becoming the 10th different women’s champion in the last 10 years.
For the second year in a row, men’s No 1 Sinner bounced back from disappointment in Paris to secure a cathartic Wimbledon crown, as the Italian defeated second seed Alexander Zverev in a gruelling four-set battle.
The 21-year-old Noskova became the youngest women’s champion since Petra Kvitova in 2011 and added to Czechia’s illustrious Wimbledon history as she defeated compatriot Karolina Muchova in a rollercoaster final.
There was not a single drop of rain across the Wimbledon fortnight while the wildcard run of Britain’s Arthur Fery, who reached the semi-finals, and the return of Serena Williams to singles at the age of 44 were also highlights during the tournament.

Novak Djokovic is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, but he spent a significant portion of his career competing with other all-time greats, whether it was Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the beginning of his career or now Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the end. However, he is not a fan of the notion that he is “chasing” anyone in his career.
This week, Djokovic fell to Sinner in three sets in the semifinal at Wimbledon before Sinner went on to win the championship on Sunday. The loss led to a question about how Djokovic is now “chasing” Alcaraz and Sinner after previously “chasing” Nadal and Federer.
Needless to say, Djokovic was not a fan of the question.
“I’m chasing Jannik and Carlos? In what sense?” Djokovic responded. “I’m always the chaser and never been chased?”
The reporter noticed Djokovic’s frustration, acknowledging that “in the meantime, you won 24 Grand Slams.”

Good morning everyone – We have off days for both the World Cup and the Tour de France today, and I don't think anyone is that interested in the tennis tournaments in Gstad, Umag, or Bastad . The great news is this gives us lots of time to talk about Wimbledon.
This time we're going to be focusing on just the women's final, where Linda Noskova defeated her Czech countrywoman Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-3. Noskova raced out ahead to a 6-2 5-2 lead before the nerves of her first Grand Slame ***** le got to her, and Muchova saved several championship points to force a third set.
But then Noskova settled early on and, like the first set, overpowered the crafty Muchova.
For those of you who might've not watched the game, there are a couple things between the second and third sets worth noting:
Noskova plugged her ears after the end of the second set to block out the noise
