Sinner, last year's U.S. Open runner-up and 2024 champion, said in a social media post that over the past few days he's been doing on-court work, but that he needs more recovery time.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
"I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
The 25-year-old Sinner has been out of action since winning Wimbledon last month.

Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz will end his tennis hiatus to defend his ****** le at the 2026 U.S. Open, he announced Thursday on social media.
Alcaraz last played in a straight-sets win over Otto Virtanen in the Round of 32 of the Barcelona Open on April 14 in Barcelona. He withdrew before his next match due to a right wrist injury he sustained in the win over Virtanen.
The 2026 Australian Open winner went on to miss the 2026 French Open and Wimbledon 2026, in addition to several other tournaments.
The singles draws for the 2026 U.S. Open will be held Aug. 27 in Flushing, N.Y. Main draw play will be held from Aug. 30 through Sept. 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Alcaraz withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday, ending hopes that he'd be ready to make his return to the sport after missing both the French Open and Wimbledon already this season. His status for the US Open later this month is still very much up in the air.
"We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible," Cincinnati Open tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement. "We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in teh future."
