Fifteen-year-old Parker of Savoonga, Alaska set out with his older brother Sidney Kulowiyi, 35, and their cousin, Barton Rookok, 34, to fish for halibut on September 4, according to Anchorage Daily News. They planned on returning in the early hours of September 6. When they didn't return, search and rescue efforts were launched.

Derek Parker Aghnaanga, 15, was spotted Monday morning on the capsized skiff roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island after he, his 35-year-old brother Sidney Kulowiyi and their cousin disappeared during a fishing trip.
"Through the teeth chattering, he had mentioned that his brother was still under the skiff," Adam White, captain of the fishing vessel Northwest Explorer, told Anchorage affiliate KTUU-TV. "And then he said that, in the previous night, before our rescue, that his cousin had slipped away."
A GoFundMe page organized by relatives said Aghnaanga tried to hold onto his brother and cousin after they died, before their bodies were recovered.

Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after being convicted of six dogfighting-related charges, according to a Department of Justice release on Thursday.
Additionally, Johnson — who was in the NFL from 1994-99 and spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants — will have three years of supervised release. Plus, he'll have to pay a $30,000 fine.
Johnson was indicted in March 2025 and convicted in an Oklahoma federal court in August of last year. He had been running a large-scale dogfighting ring based in the state since at least 2007, according to the DOJ, which cited trial testimony.
Johnson, 55, previously pleaded guilty in 2004 to Oklahoma dogfighting offenses. Back then, he received a five-year deferred sentence in state court, according to ESPN's Thursday report, which cited Oklahoma court records.
His most recent operation, known as "Mal Kant Kennels," consisted of breeding and selling pit bulls who would fight around the country, with Johnson profiting from the trafficking. The 190 dogs the authorities seized from Johnson's property are the most ever rescued from a single individual in a federal dogfighting case, per the DOJ.

The Department of Justice says Johnson made hundreds of thousands of dollars through his dog fighting operation, selling dogs he described as fighting champions, selling puppies he said were bred to be fighting champions, and charging stud fees to other dog fighters so that his champion males could breed with their females.
The 55-year-old Johnson was a third-round pick of the Packers in 1994 and also played for the Cardinals and Giants before finishing his pro football career with the XFL's Chicago Enforcers.

The bathroom, the closet that held neatly piled clothing, the ‌yards. All are now covered with a thick layer of river mud that descended without warning on bustling communities.
As the waters ‌recede, the survivors remain stunned, grieving and praying.
A string of miracle rescues in recent days has kept hopes alive that more people might still be saved from the catastrophe of August 26 when a glacier collapsed, sending a mass of mud and rock crashing into a river along the border between Nepal and China's Tibet. The resulting floods washed away villages, snapped highways like twigs, and buried homes in the mud.
At least 1,380 bodies have so far been pulled from the wreckage, some far downstream from the site of the disaster. A wall outside a Kathmandu hospital plastered with photos and desperate appeals hints at the unfinished ‌story of an estimated 5,500 people who remain ⁠missing.

Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the airport's diagonal runway shortly before 2 p.m. EDT and struck multiple vehicles on the ground, killing 5 people and injuring 5 more, including 3 who are in critical condition, officials said during a news conference on Sunday afternoon.
At least two people were trapped in vehicles ‌that were struck by the ⁠plane, and the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the plane by the crash, said Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah.
More than 60 ⁠rescue units and about 200 personnel responded to the incident, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a statement. As of late Sunday afternoon, emergency personnel were still dealing with a fuel leak from the aircraft, according to Jadallah.

Rescue workers in bright ‌orange uniforms used excavators, shovels and ground-penetrating radar to scour the now-buried site of the Gyirong border crossing.
The border crossing became a grisly ‌emblem of the devastation that followed the collapse of a glacier on the Nepal side of the border on August 26 after videos showed a black wave of water, mud and debris sweeping over it with little warning.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A private **** ecraft that was supposed to provide a lifeline to NASA's Swift Observatory managed to get close to the sinking telescope and even snap photos two weeks after the rescue was abandoned.
But the three-armed robotic salvager had to turn away because it was low on fuel, according to Katalyst **** e Technologies, which attempted the daring operation.
"We got so close, but so far," Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee told The **** ociated Press this week.
Katalyst's Link **** ecraft got within 15 kilometers (9 miles) of Swift on Tuesday, using its sensors to gather data on the doomed telescope for NASA. The rescue effort had already been called off in August because of Link's own troubles in orbit, but the company wanted the practice for future satellite-servicing missions.
Link went into an uncontrollable spin soon after rocketing to Swift's rescue in July. Flight controllers managed to slow the tumble and stabilize the **** ecraft, using up precious fuel. In the end, there was not enough fuel remaining to boost the aging Swift into a higher, longer-lasting orbit so it could continue observing the cosmos.

Management confirmed that AXPAXLI, its lead retinal disease candidate, remains on track for a new drug application submission for wet age-related macular degeneration in the fourth quarter of 2026, a plan the FDA effectively signed off on during a Type C meeting held in May. That timeline, paired with new data suggesting patients could need far fewer injections, is the headline. The rest of the report shows what it costs to get there.
AXPAXLI's case rests on the SOL-1 trial, which Ocular describes as the first successful superiority study of a new agent against an approved anti-VEGF therapy since that drug class arrived two decades ago. The FDA's May 2026 meeting minutes confirmed that SOL-1's efficacy and safety data, along with an interim safety look at the SOL-R trial and supporting evidence on axitinib, will be enough to support the NDA filing, and Ocular plans to file under the 505(b)(2) pathway, which could shave up to 60 days off a standard review.
A post hoc ***** ysis of SOL-1 adds a practical argument for the drug: applying SOL-R's stricter rescue criteria, Ocular estimates patients could need up to 72% fewer injections through 60 weeks, or 56% once the two loading doses are counted, than a patient on a typical every-eight-week aflibercept regimen, a gap that matters given that up to 40% of wet AMD patients quit treatment within their first year.
Early market research backs that pitch: about 80% of surveyed retina specialists said they would likely prescribe a drug with AXPAXLI's profile, and more than 90% expect to adopt it within a year of approval. The company says every Tier 1 payer it has engaged, across Medicare Advantage and commercial plans, has floated premium pricing for a more durable option. Underpinning all of it is a cash balance of $598.6 million as of June 30, which management expects to last into 2028.
Getting AXPAXLI to market is expensive, and the quarter showed it. Research and development spending rose to $54.1 million from $51.1 million a year earlier, selling and marketing costs climbed to $17.3 million from $13.7 million, and general and administrative expenses jumped to $22.2 million from $14.3 million, all tied to trial costs and a growing commercial team ahead of a launch that still is not approved. Net loss widened to $78.8 million from $67.8 million in the same quarter of 2025.

Swiss lawmakers are expected to send a softened banking reform proposal to the upper house of parliament, as the country tries to settle one of the biggest questions left by the Credit Suisse collapse: how much capital should UBS be forced to hold?
The Swiss government originally wanted UBS to hold about $20 billion in additional Common Equity Tier 1 capital. CET1 is the hard stuff: high-quality equity capital that absorbs losses first and gives regulators comfort when a bank gets into trouble.

NICOSIA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - At least eight people died and 18 were missing after a ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew capsized off North Cyprus on Sunday, leaving survivors clinging to its overturned hull.
The privately owned ferry left the ‌port of Kyrenia at 12:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT) and immediately started taking on water for an unknown reason, authorities ‌said. It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu in the eastern Mediterranean.
Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically, with its last hard impact with the water's surface breaking the bow of the two-hulled vessel, allowing water to seep in. The boat was carrying 267 people, including a crew of eight, while 241 people were rescued.
The disaster occurred just off the coast of Kyrenia, a popular holiday resort for both locals and tourists. The ferry was one of several shuttle sea services that link North Cyprus, a breakaway unrecognised Turkish Cypriot state, with Turkey daily.

BEIJING, Aug 29 (Reuters) - The threat of a lake formed after a glacier collapse bursting near the China-Nepal border where a devastating flood occurred earlier this week has decreased, Chinese authorities said ‌on Saturday, as its size appears to have shrunk.
Satellite images from Thursday to Saturday morning suggest that ‌water in the lake – straddling the China-Nepal border at the confluence of two rivers – has been slowly flowing through, decreasing the reservoir gradually, state broadcaster CCTV reported citing the Water Resources Ministry.
The ministry said satellite imagery of the surface area of the lake at Purepu Tsangpo river showed it was 99,000 sqm in size on early Saturday morning – around the size of 14 football fields combined – having shrunk by 21,000 sqm compared with images from Thursday.
A glacier collapse on Wednesday sending a powerful torrent of rock, ‌ice, mud and debris through Himalayan ⁠mountain river systems swept away a border port complex linking China's Tibet to Nepal, killing hundreds and leaving thousands missing.
Experts and authorities have warned of the extremely high risk of ⁠secondary disasters in the valley, especially from the lake that was formed by glacier debris, potentially endangering rescue operations downstream.
