It's that time of the year again when the gaming community and NFL players at large react to the ratings in a video game. Madden NFL 27 will be available for purchase on Aug. 13 (early access available Aug. 6 and Aug. 10) and EA Sports revealed the top 10 quarterbacks in this year's game on July 29.
Only two quarterbacks hit the headline 99 ratings in 2026: Matthew Stafford, the league's reigning Most Valuable Player, and Buffalo Bills signal-caller Josh Allen, who won the MVP award in 2025. Four others, Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, Seattle Seahawks wide receiverJaxon Smith-Njigba and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, were also rated 99 overall.
In this case, someone has to have the worst rating amongst the most important position in football, and that belongs to Baltimore Ravens backup Joe ******* nano, who has a 59 overall rating among the top-10 quarterbacks and rookie signal callers listed.

The Detroit Lions will have one of the best offenses in the NFL – in the virtual world, anyway.
EA's Madden NFL 27 video game released offensive ratings for skill position players on Wednesday, July 29, and several Lions are prominently placed among the NFL's best. The most notable placements for Lions players are at running back and wide receiver, where running back Jahmyr Gibbs (98 overall) and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (95 overall) are ranked No. 1 and No. 4 at their respective positions.
Two other Lions offensive standouts will rank highly in the game, with tight end Sam LaPorta (88 overall) and quarterback Jared Goff (88 overall) rank as the No. 7 and No. 10 tight end and quarterback, respectively. Though in a potential blow for Lions fans, Los Angeles Rams quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford is ranked as the No. 1 quarterback and one of just six players with a 99 overall rating in the game.
Though Goff is listed as a top-10 quarterback, he is not the highest-rated NFC North quarterback in the game. That ***** le belongs to Chicago Bears quarterback (and cover athlete) Caleb Williams, who comes in at No. 9 at 90 overall.
With so much virtual offensive firepower, the Lions are ranked as the No. 2 offense in the game at 91 overall, with the Rams topping them at 93 overall. And though Madden has not yet released its defensive ratings, fans should expect high marks for edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker Jack Campbell.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is still in the running to earn the No. 1 overall spot on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2026 list this summer.
According to the NFL's Grant Gordon, Maye is one of 12 contenders with viable shots at earning the top spot in this year's NFL 100 rankings after his superb season in 2025.
"2025 AP NFL Most Valuable Player runner-up was youngest player in NFL history to lead league in completion percentage (72.0, team record); Pro Bowler also led league in passer rating (113.5) and passing yards per attempt (8.9), ultimately guiding Patriots to Super Bowl LX," Gordon wrote.
Maye had a season of note in 2025. He was one of the most successful players in the league from an individual and team standpoint last season. In only his second NFL season, he racked up 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions, earning All-Pro honors for his efforts.

I recently released my first batch of my favorite NFL win totals to bet for the 2026-27 season. A derivative futures market off of that one is whether or not a team will make the postseason, which is what I'll explore in this article.
I like trying to find some longer shots in these markets, where our preseason priors might end up being far off and the returns from our wagers can loom larger. I found three teams with some asymmetry worth exploiting.
Here are a few NFL playoff make/miss wagers that I like right now:
The Rams have the shortest odds to win the Super Bowl, and yet I am interested in their market to miss the playoffs entirely. So, what gives?
Among NFL teams, Los Angeles is one where injury risk looms the largest. A 37-year old Matthew Stafford came into last season with serious concerns about his back injuries, sitting out most of training camp and all of preseason, while getting multiple pain injections into his spine. While Stafford went on to nullify those concerns — playing in all 17 games and winning MVP — it doesn't change the fact that he's now a year older and still has a heightened injury possibility compared to other QBs. If Stafford got hurt, the Rams would have to rely on rookie first-round pick QB Ty Simpson.

CMU came to Athens for the second game of the 2008 season and met a Bulldog squad with a chip on its shoulder. Georgia, led by future #1 draft pick and likely NFL Hall of Famer Matt Stafford had begun the season ranked #1 in the nation for the first time in decades. But the Red and Black actually dropped to #2 after a sleepy home opener win against Georgia Southern. They took their frustrations out on the Chips, scoring on four straight possessions coming out of halftime to cruise to a 56-17 victory.
There were plenty of highlights in this one, but the iconic moment remains Knowshon's twisting, leaping run for a drive extending first down.

Getting rid of the football before it becomes a sack is one of the least appreciated skills a quarterback can have. Fortunately for the Los Angeles Rams, Matthew Stafford has shown to be one of the best in the NFL at doing just that — and landed among one of the best quarterbacks all-time.
NFL **** yst Ryan Paganetti plotted projected 2026 starting quarterbacks' early-down sack rate against early-down throwaway rate, using data from 2022-2025 (regular season and playoffs). He added Tom Brady's final 10 seasons as the historical measuring stick.
Brady, unsurprisingly, sits at the bottom of the sack-rate scale — lower than every other quarterback on the board, a testament to the pocket awareness and quick decision-making that defined the back half of his career. But Stafford isn't far behind. He landed next to Bills quarterback Josh Allen within shouting distance of Brady's territory, both comfortably inside the green zone that denotes a better-than-average sack rate.
For a Rams team that just spent the offseason loading up on defensive talent around him, Stafford's ability to protect himself and keep the offense on schedule matters as much as ever.
At 38 and coming off an MVP-caliber, league-leading season in yards and touchdowns, Stafford pairing that vertical aggression with Brady-like pocket discipline is a big part of what's kept Los Angeles' offense humming. And, according to these numbers, it's a skill that hasn't gotten nearly enough attention.

That said, which quarterback is most likely to break it this season?
Having a 500-yard passing game is a crowning achievement for single callers. Including the playoffs, there have only been 27 such games in NFL history, with Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady and Drew Brees the only QBs to have thrown for over 500 yards multiple times. Kirk Cousins is the most recent to have done so, throwing for 509 yards in a 2024 win over the Buccaneers.
Without further ado, let's take a look at the top candidates to topple Van Brocklin's record in 2026.
Let's start with the option closest to home. Stafford once threw for 520 yards as a member of the Lions in the 2011 regular season finale against the Packers at Lambeau Field. Unfortunately, it came in a losing effort, as the quarterback on the opposite sideline, Matt Flynn, threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 Green Bay win.
Stafford seems like an easy choice given that he's already a member of the 500 Club and has one of the league's most explosive offenses at his disposal. However, he's thrown for at least 450 yards with the Rams once, which came against the Seahawks late last season.

The Rams were among the favorites for Super Bowl LXIII before they traded for Myles Garrett in June and acquiring the defensive player of the year has only pushed expectations for the coming season higher in Los Angeles.
Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged those expectations at the start of training camp while noting that "there's a lot of stuff in the midst of the journey that we don't control." McVay wants the Rams to prioritize the things they do control when it comes to preparing for the season and quarterback Matthew Stafford was in a similar frame of mind when he spoke to reporters on Monday.
Stafford said he wants the team to focus on improving their baseline level of play rather than thinking about how high they can climb if everything falls into place.
"We can't help but make each other better, [but] pieces of paper and names on a roster, those don't win football games," Stafford said, via Greg Beacham of the ******* ociated Press. "Teams and players and groups do. . . . Sean said it the other night, we've got potentially a high ceiling, right? We've got great players that have done a lot in this league. What can we do to continue to raise our floor, so if I'm off a little bit, we can still go find a way to win a football game? If our defense is off a little bit, we can still find a way to go win a football game. Continuing to raise that floor is something that's going to be a huge part of our journey this season."
There are a number of ways that a talented team can get thrown off track over the course of an NFL season. The work that Stafford and the Rams do now can't eliminate all of them, but anything they can do to pare that number down will help them weather the inevitable curveballs that come their way over the next few months.

When he dropped back, he could throw to last season's NFL leader in yards receiving last season or touchdown receptions.
Stafford is the reigning NFL MVP and a Super Bowl champion himself, but he also spent enough seasons of his career on mediocre teams to recognize just how good he has it here in his 18th year.
"It was a blast to be out here today," Stafford said. "I'm surrounded by so many great players, and I don't take that for granted, both on our side of the football and on the defensive side. After sitting out of Sunday's opening practice as part of the Rams' plan to keep their franchise quarterback in top shape for the season ahead, Stafford looked remarkably sharp in his first workout of training camp. He repeatedly found All-Pro Puka Nacua and Davante Adams in solid coverage with long, precise throws that had the crowd at Loyola Marymount cheering.
The Rams made a handful of bold personnel moves in the past four months to maximize the size of their remaining championship window with their 38-year-old quarterback, but coach Sean McVay said on the opening day of camp that he won't measure his team's success or failure "by whether or not we win a Super Bowl."

The Los Angeles Rams have one of the best front offices in the NFL, and as a result, they have been one of the best drafting teams in the league since general manager Les Snead took control in 2012.
Exemplifying their success is their status in CBS Sports' rankings of the best first-round picks since 2020. Despite only having one first-round pick from 2020 to 2025, their selection of Jared Verse was ranked 11th. Verse, a 2024 selection, won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was the 19th selection in his class and the third-highest member (Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels) of his class in the rankings.
"The Rams' ******* ysis is easily the funniest of any in the NFL," wrote CBS Sports' Mike Renner. "They had only one first-round pick from 2020-25, and it was one of the best picks over that span, with Jared Verse checking in at No. 11 out of 191. In an ironic twist of fate, he's no longer on the Rams after the Myles Garrett trade this offseason. The Rams' attitude toward the draft is truly one of one."
While convention might state that the Rams should keep and use their first-round picks if they have such success, every first-round pick flipped since 2019 has been for a star player, including Jalen Ramsey, Matthew Stafford and Trent McDuffie.

Sean McVay and the front office probably have a good idea of which players are locks to make the 53-man roster this year. With such a strong roster, many players are certain to make the team. But there are a handful of guys who are squarely on the bubble, needing a good showing in camp in order to stick around on the active roster.
Training camp practices will help decide who falls on the right side of the bubble and who gets cut, as will the preseason. These six players are right on the bubble heading into camp, which begins this weekend.
Ty Simpson obviously isn't in any danger of being cut if he can't secure the No. 2 spot behind Matthew Stafford, but Bennett's job isn't safe. In fact, if Simpson beats out Bennett, it's possible the Rams will release the former Georgia standout and only carry two quarterbacks.
Of course, that's dependent on Bennett's performance in camp and the preseason, but with such a talented roster, the Rams may not find room for three quarterbacks. If Bennett performs the way he did last summer, though, he'll be difficult to cut.
Dolac was a key special teamer last year after standing out in training camp and the preseason, securing his spot on the 53-man roster after just two exhibition games. Even though he made the team last year, there's no guarantee he'll be back on it this season – especially after the Rams signed Grant Stuard to be their special teams ace.

It seems Aaron Donald is not the only ex-member of the Los Angeles Rams that is considering unwinding his retirement. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that Jimmy Garoppolo is open to playing in 2026 after mulling hanging up his cleats this spring.

The Rams could still use Garoppolo’s services. Stetson Bennett is currently the primary understudy to Matthew Stafford in a year when expectations for LA are Super Bowl or bust. Bennett has never taken a regular season snap. Garoppolo brings a seasoned resume that can keep the team afloat if Stafford misses extended time.
One complication is the fact that Los Angeles drafted Ty Simpson in the first round this spring. Garoppolo may not want to join a quarterback room where he is in danger of losing playing time to a highly drafted rookie.

As we pass the midway point of the 2020s, it's worth looking back at which players made the biggest impact on the NFL over the past five season.
The Los Angeles Rams were one of three teams to have at least three players listed on Fox Sports' "Half-Decade Team," with Davante Adams, Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald all earning spots on the star-studded roster. Los Angeles tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the second-most representatives of any franchise, behind only the Baltimore Ravens' four. And if you're wondering where Matthew Stafford is, Fox Sports only picked one quarterback, and it was hard to leave Patrick Mahomes off this list.
But the Rams' total comes with an asterisk the Chiefs and Ravens don't share: two of the three honorees have spent a combined one season in Los Angeles so far. Adams arrived via trade in 2025 and just completed his first year with the team. Garrett only just joined this offseason after being dealt from Cleveland in a blockbuster move, and has yet to play a single snap in a Rams uniform. His perceived value surges after an MVP season, crashes after a playoff loss, and resets with almost no institutional memory of the underlying fundamentals. The film, the production, and the total body of work change gradually. The narrative price moves overnight.
Lamar Jackson is judged differently than any quarterback in recent memory. His accolades take the stairs up while his critics put him on the elevator down. Every achievement is earned slowly, scrutinized at every floor, and met at the top with a new reason it was not enough. Every criticism arrives instantly and is amplified before anyone checks whether it is true. Old narratives are zombie-like in their refusal to die. Evidence of underperformance is weighted against his entire body of work, while evidence of growth is often treated as temporary. When the facts change, the framing simply finds a new form.
That narrative volatility is visible right now. In the player-voted NFL Top 100, Jackson fell 67 places—from No. 2 to No. 69—after an injury-disrupted season in which he still finished fourth in passer rating at 103.8. Trevor Lawrence ranked 62nd and Bo Nix 59th, while ESPN's survey of more than 70 executives, coaches, and scouts placed Jackson fifth among quarterbacks. Colin Cowherd's movement was even more revealing: he ranked Jackson seventh in May, then 11th in July, choosing the "ascending" Drake Maye over an "expensive, declining" Jackson and announcing that he was "selling his stock." Skepticism about Jackson in major postseason moments is fair; declaring him a depreciating ******* et after one injury-marred season is not. He is 29. Matthew Stafford just won MVP at 37, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning won at 37 or older, and Tom Brady won at 40. Meanwhile, Baltimore's supporting cast was ranked 22nd. When Jackson produces an MVP-caliber season, critics say he is loaded with talent. When preseason rankings arrive, that same supporting cast is considered below average while Jackson's individual value collapses. This is not consistent evaluation. It is narrative volatility. If every NFL player were available in a franchise draft today and the objective were to win now, I do not believe five players would be selected before Lamar Jackson.

Entering the 2026 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams are already regarded as having one of the best teams in football. But if they achieve their lofty goal of winning a championship, they could go down as one of the greatest teams of all time.
Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr added the Rams to a list of 14 teams that could win the Super Bowl this season. While that's not surprising, given the strength of the team's roster and their recent runs of success, it is worth noting that Orr believes the Rams have one of the best on-paper teams he's ever seen.
The Rams are the obvious, heavy-hitting front-runners on this list. The additions of Myles Garrett, Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie to a team that was a few plays away from going to the Super Bowl is the clearest example of Les Snead and Sean McVay appropriately reading their roster and honing in on the right time to triple down. The Rams' schedule is relentless, and managing rest for both Garrett and Matthew Stafford will be a major storyline this coming season, especially after beginning the season in Australia.
Still, it would be fair to say the Rams were on equal footing from a talent perspective with the Seahawks last year and made premium upgrades in every area where they were deficient, whereas Seattle had a post–Legion of Boom redux where it had to confront the difficulty of paying certain Super Bowl–winning stars versus opting to save elsewhere. Anyone who does not rank the Rams as one of the two or three top Super Bowl contenders is simply overthinking it. This is one of the best preseason, on-paper teams I have ever seen.
The Seahawks had to lose some players in free agency as the champagne costs ****** ociated with players who win the Super Bowl forced the team to make tough financial decisions. Despite that, the Seahawks were able to maintain the entire core of their operation, so their losses likely won't hurt in the long run.

Hill finished at 1-under-par 215 (67-77-71) across the three-day tournament, which comes with a $700 purse.
He was the tournament's leader after Day 1, when he scored a five-under 67 — the top single-day score of the weekend — but struggled with a 77 on Day 2.
On Day 3, when others on the leaderboard faded, Hill shot one under to regain the lead.
"I just thought, keep it simple, fairways and greens, and maybe a putt or two will drop," Hill said in a RDGA press release.

With Cooper Kupp on the decline, the Los Angeles Rams decided to part ways with the former Super Bowl MVP and bring in another veteran, Davante Adams. They signed Adams after he was cut by the New York Jets, bringing him back to California and pairing him with Puka Nacua to create one of the best receiver duos in football.
Though it took some time for him to develop chemistry with Matthew Stafford, especially after the veteran QB dealt with back issues in camp, Adams went on to lead the NFL with 14 touchdown catches in only 14 games.
The Rams considered trading him away for A.J. Brown this offseason but decided to keep him for the final year of his contract, hoping to get Adams that elusive Super Bowl ring. He nearly cracked the top five of our most important players list, coming in at No. 6.
Just before the start of 2025 free agency, the Rams made a big splash by signing Adams to a two-year, $44 million contract. He was still considered a premier player despite his production slipping with the Raiders and Jets, so the Rams brought him aboard and gave Stafford yet another weapon on the outside.
Adams is entering the final year of his contract, so it's possible he'll hit free agency in 2027 if the Rams don't extend him beforehand.

The Los Angeles Rams have a stellar offense that is being commanded by one of the best quarterbacks in football. Despite their elite scheme and the play of Matthew Stafford, the team still needs playmakers and these three are in position to be that difference.
Here are three Rams who should exceed expectations in 2026, even as high as they might be.
Nacua is already one of the best receivers in football and yet he's still grossly underrated compared to his counterparts. Entering last season, there were some divided opinions about whether he was a top-10 wide receiver. His response was to continuously shine against the top defenses in 2025. Entering 2026, Nacua is considered one of the best but his current career track makes this the season where he goes from being among the NFL's top playmakers to being the best.
With Davante Adams being a year older and the Rams evolving their tight end usage, their only consistent receiving threat is Nacua. Naturally, he will see the majority of targets and with a scheme that can attack a variety of defenses, Nacua is the tip of the spear to the NFL's best passing offense. Even at Pro Bowl status, there's still another level Nacua could reach and 2026 is the perfect opportunity to reach it.
At some point, Trost has to see the field. He's essentially the Rams' main backup lineman. He will likely serve as the swing tackle and could challenge Justin Dedich and Beaux Limmer for the top backup role on the interior.

David Blough was an undrafted rookie third-string quarterback for the Detroit Lions in 2019, when he first met Matthew Stafford. These days, Blough is entering his third year of coaching and his first as the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Stafford is about to enter his 18th NFL season and is coming off his first MVP award.
Back to 2019. It was Week 5, and Blough's wife, Melissa, an accomplished hurdler, was in Qatar for the World Athletics Championships. So, during Detroit's bye week, Stafford did something special for Blough and his wife, despite having known him for only about a month. After signing as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns, Blough was traded to Detroit on Aug. 30, just before the season.
Washington's new offensive coordinator joined Ari Meirov's podcast Tuesday and shared the story.
"My wife was running internationally," Blough said via Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire. "In 2019, she was running at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. And I hadn't seen her since she went on the international circuit. Our bye week was after Week 4, and I had known Matthew for a whole month. That's it. Just one month. … And he basically says to me – her season was over, she had finished in the quarterfinals – and he says, 'How come she can't fly home? How come she can't come home for the bye week? You need to see her. It's a long season.' She wasn't able to fly back yet and he called me on the Tuesday of our bye week, knowing we had Thursday through Sunday off, and he calls me and says, 'Hey, can she get on a flight tomorrow night from Doha to Chicago? You can pick her up there. I'll pay for it. I'll fly your wife home for you. I had known him for a month, and he is doing this for me."
That's a great story. You don't often hear a lot about Stafford, which is by design. But not only did the star quarterback show tremendous leadership, but he also took it upon himself to do something extremely kind for a new, young teammate.

Los Angeles Rams superstar Matthew Stafford had a phenomenal run during the 2025-26 NFL season, clinching the first MVP award of his career.
However, let’s not forget that Stafford is already 38 years old. While he led the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns last season, Stafford’s wife has hinted at the Rams star’s retirement plans.
Stafford’s wife made an appearance on The Cutting Edge podcast, where she gave two major reasons why the Rams star may not continue his career beyond the upcoming NFL season.

The Baltimore Ravens are coming off an extremely disappointing season that saw them miss out on winning the AFC North and making the playoffs after missing a last-second 44-yard field goal. It appears that one playoff without two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson is all it’s taken for the general public, and even Jackson’s peers, to forget just how dynamic he is when he’s healthy.
A year after he finished second on the NFL’s Top 100 list, in which the players themselves vote on the top 100 players in the league, Jackson came in at the 69th spot for the 2026 offseason. On Tuesday, Colin Cowherd said openly that he doesn’t trust Jackson anymore.
“Now remember, this is voted on by players. Those are his peers. That’s always been his number one support group. Anytime there was criticism about him and I defended him forever. It was always his peers, his teammates,” Cowherd said of Jackson’s 67 spot fall on Tuesday’s episode of The Herd.
“There’s other franchise quarterbacks I like— Drake Maye now, and Caleb Williams, and Bo Nix,” Cowherd added. “And there’s just more good young quarterbacks coming into the league. I mean, about the only quarterback who I think is like declining— and it’s hard to say Matt Stafford is declining, but he’s old— that’s about it. There’s just too many good young quarterbacks. So I mean, Lamar Jackson as a starter used to average 10 rushes a game. Last year it was 5.”
Cowherd was not shy in his **** sment: Jackson has already begun his physical decline.

There weren’t many positive takeaways from the end of the Green Bay Packers’ 2025 season, but as a whole, it did allow Jordan Love to build two of the strongest connections in the league.
According to Pro Football Focus, Love's connections with Matthew Golden and Tucker Kraft led all wide receivers and tight ends in expected points added (EPA) per play last season.
