From the crush of publicity in August, to the doom-and-gloom that followed early losses, to the idea that Texas was wronged by the College Football Playoff committee after finishing with a flourish, every narrative turn felt emotionally overwrought.

The final four of the 2026 World Cup is set, and it's a rather stacked final four that includes the two finalists from the last Euros and the two finalists from the last World Cup. Despite all the shocks and surprises and drama of this World Cup, the four semifinalists are just about the four favorites that were always expected to get there.
That's not to say that they had gotten there without their fair share of drama; certainly in Argentina's case. The defending champions have produced some of the most entertaining games of the knockout rounds, and while last night's semifinal against Switzerland didn't exactly reach the heady heights of the Cape Verde or Egypt matches in terms of pure cinema, it still featured one of the best goals scored at this World Cup in Julián Alvarez's winner in extra-time.
Credit to Switzerland for managing to hold Argentina to just one goal during the 90 minutes; things might have ended differently for them had Breel Embolo not collected one of the silliest red cards of the tournament with a most egregious dive in the second half that was rightfully awarded a second yellow after VAR review. Down to ten, the Swiss managed to hold out to extra-time, but could not get to the penalties.
Enzo Fernández lasted the 90 but was taken off for extra-time. Valentín Barco continues to not feature.
Argentina will take on England in the second semifinal on Wednesday after the Three Lions outlasted an absolutely shattered Norway (and Erling Haaland) in the Miami heat and humidity. Norway took the lead on a did-he-mean-it strike from Andreas Schjelderup but Jude Bellingham dragged them back into it on the stroke of half-time (possibly ****** isted by bit of camera rigging in the sky: the Cable of God?).

After a thrilling weekend in the United States, the Wanda Diamond League will head back to Europe to continue its 2026 season with a meet in Monaco.
The 10th meet of the year will bring a stacked lineup of Olympic and world champion athletes together for a world-class competition in glamorous Monaco. Diamond League is officially in the back end of its 2026 schedule, with only a handful of meets remaining before the two-day final in Brussels on September 4-5.

Manchester United are shopping in two very different aisles, and that tells you plenty about where this squad still stands. One target is Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain attacker with obvious upside and limited senior mileage. The other is Carlos Baleba, a Premier League midfielder who would cost serious money even after a supposed reduction in price. Put together, it looks like a club still trying to balance long-term planning with short-term need.

According to United in Focus, United are exploring a move for Mbaye, with Tottenham also in the frame. That matters, because Spurs have already beaten United to one young talent this summer and there is no appetite at Old Trafford for repeatedly finishing second in these situations. If United think Mbaye is top-level material, they need to act with clarity, not drift and hope the market comes to them.
Mbaye’s profile is easy to understand. He is young, he is versatile, and he already has experience inside an elite environment. He made 31 appearances in all competitions for PSG in 2025/26, although the raw total needs context. Just over 1,200 minutes is not a huge workload. This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Pro Football Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Urlacher discusses his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He discussed that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton deserves more respect as one of the best at his position in the league.
"They're (MLB players) always so much better than we (NFL players) are (at the American Century Championship). I mean, we have Tony Romo, Marshall Faulk, who is really good for us, but they have Derek Lowe and Mark Mulder, who are just as good," said Urlacher. "They have so many good players; it's frustrating Kevin Millar is also good; they're just stacked with talent."
Urlacher is considered one of the greatest linebackers to play the game, earning numerous accolades throughout his career. He praises several of today's stars, including Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton.
"Man, that dude (Nick Bolton) gets it. LAS VEGAS – Cody Garbrandt received a bit of a wake-up call following Dustin Poirier's recent arrest.
A former UFC champion now nearing the end of his career, Garbrandt (15-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC) contemplated his future after fighting, as well as what's in store for his fellow fighters as as whole.
Poirier, who's long been a staple of the UFC, retired from MMA earlier this year. In multiple interviews before and after his arrest, Poirier expressed how tough it was for him to adapt to life after fighting. Things reached a boiling point for Poirier two weeks ago when he was arrested for public drunkenness at an airport.
Garbrandt, 35, can see how fighters – even successful ones like Poirier – stuggle in retirement from many different aspects: physical and mental health, financial stability, and more. "No Love" would like to see the UFC help mitigate these issues.
"I don't know how many years I have left in the sport, but I pray that God lets me stay healthy, intact, and I can leave on my own terms," Garbrandt told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. "I think a lot of fighters don't get that opportunity. They have to fight because they need the money. They have to fight injured. It's tough. You see them walk away and the detriment that it does getting released back into the wild. Like, man, you're not going to have that adrenaline, something to look forward to, so it's tough. I just pray that a lot of these fighters stacked their money, get plans for after. I wish the UFC did a little more in helping us out with that: healthcare, insurance, 401K. It's scary to leave something that's secure and you've chased your whole life, and then it's done and those paychecks don't come in, those sponsorships don't come in. Then you go back to not having that adrenaline of chasing something. ... It's scary to think about that stuff. I can see why mentally, physically, emotionally a lot of fighters you see in the media go through stuff like that."

The Detroit Pistons continue to reshape a roster that won 60 games last season as they battle for supremacy in a suddenly stacked and formidable Eastern Conference.
The Pistons swung a trade Tuesday, July 7, with their Central Division foe Milwaukee Bucks in a salary swap, sending Caris LeVert and two second-round picks for forward Taurean Prince and ex-Michigan State guard Gary Harris.
The Pistons save roughly $7.2 million in the deal and get a trade exception worth that amount that expires in one year, ESPN reported.
Prince, 32, is on an expiring $3.8 million contract. Harris, who turns 32 in September, is on an expiring $3.8 million contract.
LeVert, 31, is on a $14.8 million expiring.

Jude Bellingham told his England teammates they can be world champions after leading by example in a 3-2 win over Mexico that will go down as one of the Three Lions' best ever World Cup triumphs.
The odds were stacked against Thomas Tuchel's men as they entered the lion's den of the Estadio Azteca, where Mexico had only lost twice in 89 previous matches and never in 10 outings at the World Cup.
