The Eastern Conference is stacked right now following all the massive changes that happened this summer. The Chicago Bulls may not be part of the conversation, but Josh Giddey wants them to be.
The Bulls underwent changes of their own, and it started before the February trade deadline. They traded Coby White to the Charlotte Hornets and Ayo Dosunmu to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
They failed to make the playoffs and quickly got to work this summer, starting with the hiring of Tiago Splitter as their new head coach. Splitter replaced Billy Donovan, who had been with the team for six seasons.
The Bulls selected Caleb Wilson with the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and later landed Norman Powell in free agency.
They don't have marquee signings like the Philadelphia 76ers, who acquired Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, or the Miami Heat, who traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. Still, Giddey believes the Bulls are capable of surprising people.

Wearing No. 3 for most of his basketball career, Dailyn Swain will have a different look next season when he takes the court for his rookie campaign with the Chicago Bulls.
Swain wore No. 3 in high school at Columbus Africentric Early College in Ohio. He had it for his first two years in college at Xavier and again last season at Texas, helping the Longhorns to the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in program history.
The 15th overall pick was forced to change his number, with No. 3 currently occupied by Josh Giddey. He said on draft night that he may try to bargain with him for it, but it appears those efforts came up short after ultimately choosing No. 5 with the Bulls.
"I don't think I'll be able to afford a No. 3 from a guy like him," Swain said on June 23. "He definitely deserves it, you know what I mean? He is on his way up in the league, and he has been killing it. I just have to rock a new number. I'm not sure what is available. My guy Rob (Dillingham) is out there. He got 7. I really like 7. I'm going to have to see what is available."
Swain was the SEC Newcomer of the Year, averaging 17.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.6 **** ists and 1.6 steals while shooting 34.4% from 3-point range. He was the only Power 5 basketball player to lead his team in five different categories (scoring, rebounding, **** ists, steals, minutes).

The Chicago Bulls made an interesting move on Wednesday, signing 2026 NBA All-Star guard Norman Powell from the conference rival Miami Heat.
This move comes after the Bulls also traded for Nicolas Claxton from the Brooklyn Nets and selected former North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson at No. 4 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft. Following these few moves, the Bulls are beginning to develop a new look under first-year executive Bryson Graham.
Powell agreed to a two-year, $45 million deal with the Bulls after averaging more than 21.0 points per game for the second year in a row last season.

Could there be mutual interest in a trade that sends star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown to the Detroit Pistons for rising Pistons big man Jalen Duren? Based on what Bleacher Report contributor Jake Fischer has been hearing, while all parties that would be needed to sign on for such a move to happen are not publicly signaling that such a trade might actually go down, there are some rumbles that hint that this might be something to keep an eye on as well.
According to Fischer in a recent video with his Stein Line substack co-contributor Marc Stein, we should not yet discount the possibility. "Would Detroit be interested in Jalen Brown for Jalen Duren?" he asked. "So far, I have been told that the Pistons don't really have interest in signing and trading Jalen Duren at all. But the gap in negotiations is big enough that Duren is out here meeting with (the) Sacramento (Kings) and meeting with the (Los Angeles) Lakers."
"And ... I have been told that Duren has interest in going to Boston in the event that those talks could happen," he added, which would presumably use Boston's $27.7 million Anfernee Simons Traded Player Exception to pull off. "The longer that Jaylen Brown lingers ... out there as being available, I do wonder if Detroit would talk themselves into (saying), 'Man, we can't find a resolution here with Duren; would bringing back an MVP candidate in Jaylen Brown be something that makes sense for us?' I do wonder."
"It's not something that's going to happen tonight," said Fischer. "But if we wake up on Friday and Jalen Duren is still unsigned – and we know how this restricted free agency dynamic can stretch out. All of Josh Giddey and Quentin Grimes and Jonathan ****** inga lasted into September last year."
I'm not saying right now I'm forecasting that either Jalen Duren or Walker Kessler are going to linger that much longer. But I don't see an end point right now. Those sides are far apart, Duren and Kessler himself with (the) Utah (Jazz) and Detroit respectively."

There were two trades made on Monday night, just hours before the start of the NBA draft. The big one involved Giannis Antetokounmpo finally getting moved by the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez, Kasparas Jakucionis and draft compensation.
In another move, the Minnesota Timberwolves shipped Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets. This deal also involved the Chicago Bulls, who will be receiving center Nic Claxton from Brooklyn. Claxton had been linked to the Lakers for the past couple of years as someone they could pursue in order to upgrade at the 5 spot.
Claxton, 27, seems to fit the mold of the defensive-minded center Los Angeles wants and needs. He is fairly athletic and has always been a good rebounder and capable rim-protector, and he is 6-foot-11 with a wingspan of at least 7-foot-2.
He averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 ****** ists and 1.1 blocks in 27.8 minutes a game this season, and his rebounding and shot-blocking numbers dropped from the peak he reached two or three years ago. He will now be joining a young Bulls squad that includes Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis.
Meanwhile, the Lakers will likely be aggressive in looking to add another athletic, rim-running defensive center to their roster in the coming weeks. They have been linked to men such as Walker Kessler, Jalen Duren, Mitchell Robinson and Robert Williams III in free agency.
