LAS VEGAS – Terence Crawford has consistently denied the possibility of a return to the ring, but Dana White appears confident that if anyone could convince the boxing great to come back, he could.
Crawford (42-0) hung up his gloves after defeating Canelo Alvarez last year. The 38-year-old retired after the biggest win of his career as an undisputed champion, prompting repeated questions about whether "Bud" would return to action.
White is moving full steam ahead with Zuffa Boxing, which means he's seeking out the biggest possible matchups available in boxing. The UFC CEO is confident he knows what it would take for Crawford to come out of retirement.
"There is always a number," White said during a post-fight news conference after Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn. "I think for a guy like Crawford, and a couple of my guys here are very close to him – I think for a guy like Crawford, it's more than just a number, it's the right fight.
"It's a fight that interests him and challenges him and makes him want to get back into camp and leave his family. I talked to him yesterday too, and he's having a blast with his kids and doing what we all wish we could do."

After an epic 11-inning win Friday night against the Phillies, the Braves were hoping to finish them off in the division race. They got a bit of a boost from the Phillies scratching Jesus Luzardo with long-running shoulder soreness.
Tyler Mahle cruised through the first two hitters before Bryce Harper hit a monster homer and took a comical amount of time rounding the bases, clearly hitting back at the controversy from Zach Wheeler's comments about Ronald Acuna's home run celebrations last week. The Phillies had to be feeling good with a 1-0 lead for a couple innings there, until the Braves essentially ended the game with 8 runs in the fourth inning. Ronald Acuna kicked things off with a towering homer (and a normal home run trot).

The Braves then got a walk, single, single, single, error, wild pitch, walk, double, and single to score another 7 runs. Drake Baldwin provided the double before things got all the way back around to Acuna for the last single, bringing home the last run of the inning.
Mahle continued to cruise after that Harper homer, finishing 7.0 innings of 1-run ball with no walks, even though he only had 7 whiffs and 3 strikeouts. The Braves added another run on in the sixth with a Ronald ABS strikeout-turned-walk, an error on an Olson ground ball, and an Ozzie sac fly. The Phillies got one back with a solo homer from Crawford in the eighth against Brent Suter. The Braves got another 3 runs against the position-player pitcher for Philly in the eighth, as Kiersey singled, Albies doubled, and Harris hit a homer off the right field foul pole. Suter finished off the Phillies in the ninth, as the Braves only needed to throw Mahle and Suter on the night. The Phillies' bullpen is in rough shape on the other side, after the 11-inning game Friday and the blowout bullpen game they suffered today.

In recent years, the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system has received some scathing remarks, as it's been called one of the weaker farm systems in baseball.
Routinely, the Phillies have one of MLB's lowest-ranked farm systems. It's not just because of the prospects they're trading away, but the ones they currently have in the system aren't viewed highly around baseball.
Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, is pushing back against that narrative. USA Today's Bob Nightengale shared a comment from Dombrowski, who pushed back against the criticism levied against the Phillies' farm system.
"We could have traded for anybody at the deadline if we had given up more prospects," Dombrowski said. "Some guys, we chose not to trade. What's amazing is that people criticize our farm system, but we've had [Justin] Crawford come up. We've had [Andrew] Painter come up. We've had Alex [McFarlane] come up. We've always had prospects to make trades. The reality is that I've never been in a spot where I couldn't make a trade because of prospects."

The good thing about this week's series in the land of the Crawford Boxes and the choo-choo is that both Sean Burke and Davis Martin pitched extremely well, a big turnaround from their recent starts and a good sign for the stretch run. The bad thing — well, besides nearly the entire offense — is that Luis Castillo once again demonstrated that while Chris Getz may have had a very nice offseason, he had a miserable trade deadline.
Castillo started out looking good, striking out Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez. He then walked Isaac Paredes on 10 pitches and threw José Altuve a fastball that would have been a strike on Aaron Judge but was nose-high on Altuve. Altuve still sent it into the Crawford Boxes to make it 2-0 Astros.
The lead didn't last long. Braden Montgomery singled off Hunter Brown to lead off the second, and Colson Montgomery followed with a routine ground ball to second. Peña blew the relay, though, and Chase Meidroth followed with an unplayable 50-mph dribbler. Jake Rogers and Sam Antonacci then delivered actual singles to tie the score.
There being no other Sox offensive highlights, what the heck, let's show you the RBIs. First, Jake's:

Four-star small forward Carson Crawford has committed to Arizona State, he told Rivals.
The 6-foot-6 senior out of Fleming Island (FL) is ranked as the No. 47 overall recruit in the 2027 class and the No. 12 ranked small forward, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an average of all three major recruiting media companies (Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports).
Crawford is a strong pickup for new Sun Devils coach Randy Bennett, who arrived in Tempe this offseason after 25 years at Saint Mary's, where he became the program's all-time winningest coach with 589 wins and led the Gaels to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Along with Arizona State, Crawford received offers from Florida State, Ole Miss, Providence, Syracuse, and others.
This summer, he won a Nike EYBL Peach Jam championship with the Florida Rebels, where he averaged 7.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while shooting better than 55% from the field during the ******* le run.

Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak revealed at a press conference on Wednesday it was an Achilles injury that led to Keyron Crawford being placed on season-ending injured reserve thus ending the edge rusher's rookie year before it even started.
Crawford suffered the injury during Las Vegas' final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 27, ending a promising summer for the Raiders' third-round pick from this year's draft. The Auburn product had emerged as a developing pass-rush option for the team and was expected to contribute behind Maxx Crosby and Kwity Paye in 2026.
The season-ending designation represents a significant setback for both Crawford and the Raiders, who will enter the regular season without one of their top young players. Crawford's absence has Patrick Johnson in line to have a bigger role at edge rusher in Las Vegas next season.
Kubiak and his staff will now have to redistribute Crawford's defensive snaps while managing the rookie's long-term rehabilitation.
The Raiders will begin the regular season on Sept. 13 against the Miami Dolphins, with Crawford expected to spend the season recovering from the Achilles injury.

The top pro pitching prospect in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England has been revealed, and he hails from Connecticut.
Wallingford native Shaun Flannery Jr., a 2026 graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, was selected for the award, according to a Tuesday morning release from the FCBL. Flannery, who is enrolled at UConn and will play baseball there, was the closer for the Norwich Sea Unicorns.
Flannery finished the game in a league-leading 15 of his 17 appearances, ranked second in saves (five) and wound up with a 3-2 record and 3.00 ERA. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-hander recorded 22 strikeouts in 21 innings during the regular season, then threw 4 ⅔ innings and yielded a single hit, picking up the win in his lone postseason appearance.
Flannery is the fourth UConn pitcher to get the top FCBL prospect honor, joining Ben Casparius and Reggie Crawford (both 2020), and Garret Garbinski (2025).
It's the second big award for Flannery in recent months. He was also the Founders League Player of the Year as a senior at Choate, where he was 3-0 with 36 strikeouts in 26 innings on the mound and batted .429 with 24 hits, a .549 on-base percentage and a 1.210 slugging percentage.

In the season opener last fall, the Miami Hurricanes knocked off Notre Dame 27-24, in a highly contested battle.
It was a victory that propelled Miami all the way to the College Football Playoff **** le game, where they ultimately fell to Indiana. The Hurricane offense lost elite offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, quarterback Carson Beck, offensive linemen Markel Bell and Anez Cooper along with wide receiver CJ Daniels to the NFL draft. That's a good amount of talent gone from a pretty solid offense, but there are some that believe Miami will be better this fall.
Recently, 247Sports Brad Crawford was asked about the Hurricanes offensive outlook for this season and he thinks it will be the best offense they've had under head coach Mario Cristobal. He'd go on to say "I think this is the best transfer quarterback Miami has gotten … Darian Mensah, I think he should be the preseason Heisman frontrunner."
Crawford is high on the running backs and wide receivers, but one area where he's a bit concerned is on offensive line. "Maybe if there's one question Miami has … that would be it," as he noted the addition of 5-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell.
This game has been circled on Notre Dame's schedule since the heartbreaking loss last year, and revenge would be sweet. The Irish defense should be one of the best in the country, and should be able to neutralize the Hurricane attack.

Ten major-league teams scored fewer runs than the Houston Astros in the month of August. Two are the teams just behind them in the American League West, helping explain how the Astros ended the month with a two-game division lead.
September began with a reminder that their standing remains tenuous. The Chicago White Sox handed them a 5-1 loss Tuesday, in which their lineup struck three hits and their starter turned in another short performance, paring their advantage atop the division.
With the Rangers and Mariners both winning Tuesday, the Astros ended the night with a one-game lead over Texas and a five-game edge on Seattle. Five more games remain against the White Sox and Arizona before a trying 13-day stretch gives way to a breather.
Their offense looked listless Tuesday. Chicago starter Sean Burke allowed one hit while working into the sixth inning at Daikin Park. Isaac Paredes' eighth-inning home run on a fly ball into the Crawford Boxes delivered the offense's only damage.
Jordan Hicks, the right-hander who surrendered it, walked his next two batters, gift-wrapping a possible rally. It fizzled as Christian Walker swung through a 99.9 mph fastball to end the inning. Houston hitters drew six walks but struck out 12 times. Taylor Trammell had two of the team's three hits.

Mantua, Cuba, is a small fishing village on the northwestern coast of the island; legend says it was founded by shipwrecked Italian sailors in the early 1600s. Maybe their respective hometowns account for their personality differences: Randy is quieter, more removed, shying away from media appearances, while Laz is as big and boisterous as the bustling capital city itself, eager to try out his English with whoever wants to talk. Making his big-league debut tonight, "Big Laz" had an appropriately splashy welcome to the big leagues that will guarantee his megawatt smile will light up highlight reels tonight both in Seattle and beyond, accounting for two of the Mariners' nine runs tonight. But Randy Arozarena also continued doing what he's done all season, leading the team offensively and providing an early separating blow that helped the Mariners outlast the Red Sox in a grueling 9-6 win at Fenway.
The Mariners got on the board right away when Dominic Canzone absolutely obliterated this hanging changeup from Red Sox starter Jedixson Paez:

Unfortunately, the Red Sox took that run right back with a blast of their own, a four-seamer from Bryan Woo that didn't quite get top rail enough that Mickey Gasper hammered for a matching blow.
But the Mariners offense picked up their starter in the top of the second, pouncing on Paez for five runs of both the small and large ball variety. Josh Naylor got things going with a leadoff double, followed by a line-drive single from Cole Young – not super hard hit, but any contact in the air is good from young Cole, who's been really struggling lately with pounding the ball into the ground. That brought up Lazaro Montes for his very first big-league at-bat in an RBI situation. Facing a flagging pitcher on a bullpen day, Montes took a studied, disciplined at-bat, getting ahead 2-0, whiffing at a changeup on the plate, and then declining to chase two more changeups to earn his way on base. J.P. Crawford put the Mariners ahead on a sacrifice fly, and then Brock Rodden checked in with an infield hit of his own, hustling down the line to allow Cole Young to score. That also turned the lineup over for Randy Arozarena, who continued his audition to Get Real Paid by the Red Sox next season by crushing a sinker middle-middle that would have wound up on Lansdowne Street if not for an inconveniently located billboard.

One of the top EDGE rushers in the nation has scheduled two visits for the upcoming fall; one of those will be to Auburn.
Auburn football has locked in a visit with 2028 five-star EDGE rusher Jalanie George for Saturday, Sept. 19, according to a report by Rivals. George will be on campus for Auburn football's SEC opener against the Florida Gators, ensuring the West Coast pass rusher will see Auburn's game-day environment at its highest level.
Auburn has been high on George's radar for several months. George put the Tigers in his top six schools in May, alongside Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, Washington, and Miami. George's interest in Auburn grew following a successful Big Cat Weekend visit this spring, and it continues to grow as Auburn is one of two teams he has locked in a fall visit with, joining Washington, who will host him on Sept. 6 for their Apple Cup game against archrival Washington State.
The EDGE rushers at Auburn have enjoyed plenty of recent success, as Keldric Faulk and Keyron Crawford were recently selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. This year's room, which includes Jared Smith and Ole Miss transfer Da'shawn Womack, is expected to be just as disruptive. The Tigers' recent success with its pass rushers is a strong pitch for George, who has the potential to be the next great EDGE rusher in Auburn's defense.
George is a five-star EDGE rusher according to Rivals and is the ninth-best player in the 2028 class. He ranks No. 2 among 2028 EDGE rushers and is the top prospect from Arizona.

Dave Doeren's 14th season at NC State needed just one game to become another referendum on his future. Virginia turned Saturday's opener into a 34-8 rout, while the reaction around the Wolfpack became increasingly unforgiving.
NC State trailed 17-0 at halftime after CJ Bailey threw an interception and lost a fumble, then watched Virginia squeeze more than 12 minutes off the clock on a 23-play fourth-quarter touchdown drive. By then, the frustration had moved well beyond one ugly possession.

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana: Julie Beaumer won Moto 1 of the Ironman National to secure the overall victory via a tiebreaker over Chance Hymas.
This was Beaumer's second overall win of the season. He also won at Spring Creek.
With 12 minutes on the clock, Beaumer took the lead from Cole Davies and moved into the overall lead, but Chance Hymas was charging. He ran out of time, but the second-place finish in the race and overall was a moral victory of sorts.
The Moto 1 winner, Hymas crashed on the opening lap of the second race. He fell to the mid-teens on the first lap, then crashed a second time. It's not how many times you fall, however. Hymas remounted again and moved into the top 10 at the midway point.

This will also mark the end of training camp, as the NFL's cutdown day is right around the corner on Sunday, raising the stakes for every player on the bubble to make the 53-man roster. As the 67th pick of the draft, it's highly unlikely that Crawford is in danger of getting cut. Again, the third-rounder's roster spot should be safe, but he's looking at getting buried on the depth chart if he doesn't step up on Thursday night.
Klint Kubiak didn't mince words when talking about the team's wide receivers after last week's game, saying "they gotta get a lot better and fast". The coaching staff is clearly looking for someone to step up and provide some depth out wide, giving Williams an opportunity to earn a roster spot with a strong outing against the 49ers. He had a 41-yard catch a couple of weeks ago, but hauled in just one grab for six yards in Houston.

The Seattle Mariners have won the series against the Philadelphia Phillies, and Cal Raleigh looks to have finally come alive, hitting four homers in a two-game span.
But the issue for the Mariners is at a different spot on the roster. Instead, it revolves around two infield positions at shortstop and third base.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report called out the Mariners' "red flag" as how the entire left side of the infield is either hurt or simply can't hit right now.
"Seattle Mariners: Left Half of the Infield Can't Hit/Stay Healthy," Miller writes. "... But with J.P. Crawford on the IL for a second time and Brendan Donovan on it for a third time, Seattle's shortstop and third base situation has been a season-long struggle."

Cavalier Resources has selected SSH Group as its preferred mining services contractor for stage one of the Crawford Gold Project in Western Australia.
The project is located approximately 20km east of Leonora.
Both companies have signed a letter of intent (LoI) outlining SSH Group's expected role as mining contractor for the initial phase of the project. This phase will focus on the oxide pit defined in Cavalier's most recent pre-feasibility study, announced in April 2026.
The contract is expected to last around 12 months, covering active mining operations during the stage one period.
Cavalier and SSH plan to finalise commercial terms with the aim of signing a binding heads of agreement and, subsequently, a mining services agreement.

SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh tied a team record with homers in four straight at-bats, George Kirby pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning and Seattle Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Raleigh led off the second inning against Philadelphia's Aaron Nola with a 362-foot shot to right field for his 18th homer of the season. It was his first time up after also homering in all three of his at-bats in a 9-2 win against the Phillies on Monday, matching the Seattle record of homers in four consecutive at-bats set by Mike Cameron on May 2, 2002.
Kirby (9-10) gave up one run on four hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings. Jose Ferrer got the last out in the eighth and Andrés Muñoz pitched the ninth for his 24 save in 32 chances.
Nola (5-10) got the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Kirby was coming off a couple of tough outings, including giving up six first-inning runs in his last start against the Brewers. It looked as if he might be in trouble again when he allowed three straight singles in the second inning, including an RBI hit by Justin Crawford. Instead, Kirby got out of the jam and cruised the rest of the way.

The Mariners look to make it back-to-back wins and back-to-back series wins.
After getting smacked around by the Cubs on Sunday, the Mariners smacked around the Phillies on Monday night. Cal Raleigh hit three home runs, and Julio and Cole Young each got one as well. It was a lot of fun, which was much needed after the last… five months or so. They'll look to keep it going.
George Kirby gets the ball. He's hoping to bounce back from a pair of true clunkers his last turns out. I've written so many times that it's been a weird season for Kirby, but that's a lot different from "it's been a bad season," because even though that's been true at times, he's turned in several excellent performances. The Mariners will certainly hope that's the case today.
Facing him will be Austin Nola's brother, Aaron. "It's been a bad season" does largely apply here, for the second year in a row. He's still a former ace — and not just in the way people say "ace" to mean good — so the Mariners will have to show up, as they say. But for a lineup looking to stay hot, the guy with -32 run value allowed on the fastball (which appears to be pretty close to a record in the Statcast era) figures to be as a good a choice as any for a tee.
And hey, they'll have some extra help today. The Mariners activated J.P. Crawford from the injured list today, who's been out since July 30 with wrist inflammation. He slots back into the lineup at third base, with Brock Rodden sticking at shortstop.

Purdue does not have many games it can realistically circle as winnable in Big Ten play. That is what makes Maryland's Nov. 7 visit to West Lafayette so critical.
The Boilermakers are still building traction in Barry Odom's second season, and the conference schedule will offer little sympathy.
Purdue must capitalize on matchups where the talent gap is manageable, home-field advantage matters and the opponent is navigating similar pressure. Maryland checks every box.
