WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump departed Washington for Texas on Wednesday aboard the Air Force One plane gifted by Qatar after an emergency slide was accidentally deployed and was removed.
Military personnel accidentally triggered the slide, a person briefed on the matter told Reuters.
The slide was activated shortly before Trump was due to board for a flight to Dallas for the first-ever Republican midterm convention. The issue briefly delayed Trump's departure.
Asked by a journalist whether he was sure that the plane was safe to fly, Trump said: "Yeah, I am, or I wouldn't be on it."

So often pitchers' duels don't really stand up to the hype, but today's matchup between two former Stetson Hatters – the Mariners' Logan Gilbert and the Rangers' Jacob deGrom – delivered on all that promise and then some. The two pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts, and deGrom carried a perfect game through five innings. In true pitching duel style, it looked like the pitcher who blinked first would come out on the short end, but despite Logan Gilbert making a couple of mistakes, his offense was able to pick him up and deliver him the win. Bragging rights are fun; wins are better. (Gilbert also gets the honor of leading MLB in whiffs today: 24 to deGrom's 20, despite having one fewer strikeout than deGrom.)
This all being said, it was a slog for the Mariners early on. The best at-bat the first time through the order for the Mariners went to – surprise, surprise – Cal Raleigh, who battled deGrom for nine pitches before striking out on deGrom's fastest fastball of the day, a 99.6 mph heater (my campaign for decimal points on the ribbon board in the stadium, which read 100, continues unabated). But the Mariners did fight deGrom, getting themselves into good counts and forcing him into the zone; he finished the second inning at 37 pitches, compared to Gilbert's 24.
But it only took two pitches to offset that work in the third. Nicky Lopez was able to take 96 up and in from Gilbert and find a hole on the infield, and one batter later, with two outs, Joc Pederson jumped a first-pitch slider for a two-run homer. It wasn't a terrible pitch from Gilbert, away from Pederson but probably still too much on the plate; Gilbert had struck Pederson out on the slider in his first at-bat. The slider was particularly nasty today, with an eye-popping 75% whiff rate. He led with the pitch, throwing it 40 times, 12 times to start off an at-bat, which feels like a different sequence than he's used. Gilbert credits Cal for coming up with a good game plan, especially after he felt like he fell into some predictable patterns in his last time out against the A's.
"Like with Joc, we got him with the slider early, so he probably thought we were going to it next time," explained Gilbert. "But then also other guys, we went heavy spin, like with Duran, and then next time went three or four straight fastballs. So I think we did a good job there. They're trying to look at how we're probably scouting them, and then next time through, maybe pitch them different. I think Cal did a good job there."
But deGrom was just as tough on the other side. After striking out eight times in the first three innings, the Mariners hitters decided to try a different strategy the second time through the order. That also didn't work, as they let deGrom cruise through the fourth on nine pitches, keeping his perfect game intact.

Since then, with a floundering Cardinals team and two major lower-body injuries contributing to the slide, Murray's career has veered off course. He can't hide it: His first game as quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon will be a big deal for him.
"Out of how many years I've played football, this has got to be right up there for most anticipated. I can't tell you how ready I am and excited to be on the field again," said Murray, who was sidelined last October by a foot injury and cut by the Cardinals in March.
The storyline gets even better: The Vikings host the division rival Green Bay Packers, and their new defensive coordinator is Jonathan Gannon, who was Murray's head coach in Arizona the last three years.

On August 4, Essential Utilities (NYSE:WTRG) reported second-quarter results that read like two different stories stapled together. Revenue climbed, the dividend grew for the 36th time in 35 years, and the merger with American Water inched closer to the finish line. But earnings per share actually dipped from a year earlier, and the company had to strip out merger costs just to show flat profitability. For a utility this steady, that split is worth a closer look.
Essential's regulated water segment posted revenue of $357.5 million in the quarter, up 7.6% from $332.3 million a year earlier, and the whole company's first-half revenue climbed 7.2% to nearly $1.4 billion. Much of that growth came from rate cases: state regulators approved $43.9 million in new annual water revenue across Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Indiana, plus $12.7 million more for the gas business in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Another $79.7 million in water rate requests and a $163.2 million gas case in Pennsylvania, tied to replacing aging pipelines, are still working through the process.
The company keeps buying its way into new customers, too. In May, it closed a $4.9 million wastewater deal in Bastrop County, Texas, and it has signed agreements worth roughly $282 million to add over 200,000 more customers in Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina and New Jersey, including the $276.5 million purchase of Philadelphia-area sewer authority DELCORA. Since 2015, acquisitions have added more than 138,000 customers to Essential's base.
Layer on the pending American Water merger, which cleared Virginia and Ohio regulators this year after nearly unanimous shareholder approval in February, and Essential is positioning itself as a much larger multi-state utility by early 2027. The board's decision to raise the dividend 5.25% to $0.3606 per share, continuing a streak of 36 increases over 35 years, signals confidence that this growth is durable.
Look past the top line and the picture gets less flattering. Second quarter net income actually fell to $105.7 million from $107.8 million a year ago, pulling GAAP earnings per share down to $0.37 from $0.38. Essential had to report an adjusted $0.38 figure just to exclude merger-related costs and show earnings roughly matching last year's. The slide is sharper over six months: net income dropped to $330.1 million, or $1.16 per share, from $391.6 million, or $1.41 per share, in the first half of 2025.

Moerus Capital Management LLC, an investment management firm, recently released its "Worldwide Fund " second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The Athletics faced the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series on Labor Day at Sutter Health Park. The Green and Gold got out to an early lead before allowing the Blue Jays to claw back late, only for the A's to win 6-5 in walk-off fashion.
After A's starter Jacob Lopez tossed a scoreless first inning, the A's generated their first scoring chance against Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease in the bottom of that inning. Athletics center fielder Henry Bolte drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third with one out. Zack Gelof knocked Bolte in with an RBI ground-rule double, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.
With two outs, the A's scored a second run when Toronto misplayed a rundown, allowing Gelof to slide home safely.

On August 4, Essential Utilities (NYSE:WTRG) reported second-quarter results that read like two different stories stapled together. Revenue climbed, the dividend grew for the 36th time in 35 years, and the merger with American Water inched closer to the finish line. But earnings per share actually dipped from a year earlier, and the company had to strip out merger costs just to show flat profitability. For a utility this steady, that split is worth a closer look.
Essential's regulated water segment posted revenue of $357.5 million in the quarter, up 7.6% from $332.3 million a year earlier, and the whole company's first-half revenue climbed 7.2% to nearly $1.4 billion. Much of that growth came from rate cases: state regulators approved $43.9 million in new annual water revenue across Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Indiana, plus $12.7 million more for the gas business in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Another $79.7 million in water rate requests and a $163.2 million gas case in Pennsylvania, tied to replacing aging pipelines, are still working through the process.
The company keeps buying its way into new customers, too. In May, it closed a $4.9 million wastewater deal in Bastrop County, Texas, and it has signed agreements worth roughly $282 million to add over 200,000 more customers in Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina and New Jersey, including the $276.5 million purchase of Philadelphia-area sewer authority DELCORA. Since 2015, acquisitions have added more than 138,000 customers to Essential's base.
Layer on the pending American Water merger, which cleared Virginia and Ohio regulators this year after nearly unanimous shareholder approval in February, and Essential is positioning itself as a much larger multi-state utility by early 2027. The board's decision to raise the dividend 5.25% to $0.3606 per share, continuing a streak of 36 increases over 35 years, signals confidence that this growth is durable.
Look past the top line and the picture gets less flattering. Second quarter net income actually fell to $105.7 million from $107.8 million a year ago, pulling GAAP earnings per share down to $0.37 from $0.38. Essential had to report an adjusted $0.38 figure just to exclude merger-related costs and show earnings roughly matching last year's. The slide is sharper over six months: net income dropped to $330.1 million, or $1.16 per share, from $391.6 million, or $1.41 per share, in the first half of 2025.

GYIRONG, China, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Chinese officials said on Sunday that workers had recovered 12 more bodies as the search continued for hundreds still missing after a tsunami-like mudslide destroyed China's main border crossing with Nepal.
Rescue workers in bright orange uniforms used excavators, shovels and ground-penetrating radar to scour the now-buried site of the Gyirong border crossing.
The border crossing became a grisly emblem of the devastation that followed the collapse of a glacier on the Nepal side of the border on August 26 after videos showed a black wave of water, mud and debris sweeping over it with little warning.

LOS ANGELES — Tommy Edman made a fantastic defensive play to rob extra bases, then rounded said bases after a three-run home run that helped the Dodgers to a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
Down two runs in the seventh inning, Alex Freeland walked with one out and Kiké Hernández singled with two out. That set the stage for Edman, who jumped on a high slider from former Dodgers draft pick Clayton Beeter for a three-run home run, turning the game around.
Edman in five games on the homestand has nine hits in 22 at-bats (.409), what a way to make a living.
With no Shohei Ohtani in the lineup for a third straight day, the Dodgers were also without two other planned starters with Dalton Rushing scratched with elbow soreness and Max Muncy sick. On August 6, Peloton Interactive (NASDAQ:PTON) reported results for its fiscal fourth quarter and full year ended June 30, and the headline number is one the company has chased for years: a full year of positive net income. Total revenue for fiscal 2026 came in at $2.446 billion, and quarterly revenue of $608 million ticked up $1 million from a year earlier. The bigger story sits beneath the top line, in a business that finally converted cost cuts into cash while its subscriber base kept shrinking.
Fiscal 2026 marked the first time in Peloton's history that the company posted positive net income and operating income for a full year, with GAAP net income landing at $63 million. Adjusted EBITDA rose 16% year over year to $468 million, even after absorbing a $23.8 million nonrecurring legal accrual tied to patent litigation in the fourth quarter. Free cash flow climbed to $378 million, up $54 million, and management used that cash to cut net debt by 80% to just $93 million from $459 million a year earlier. CEO Peter Stern credited the turnaround to an improved revenue trajectory paired with cost restructuring, and the company said it exceeded its own target of more than $100 million in run-rate savings by the end of the fiscal year.
Growth is showing up outside the core bike and treadmill business too. The profitability story cannot hide what is happening to the customer base. Ending Paid Connected Fitness Subscriptions fell 8.8% year over year to 2.553 million, and monthly churn rose to 2.2% in the fourth quarter from 1.8% a year earlier. Hardware sales are choppy too. Connected Fitness Products revenue dropped 14% year over year in the quarter to $171 million, and gross margin on that hardware segment swung to 13.4% from 17.3% a year ago before recovering some ground quarter over quarter. Top prospect Josue Briceño has been placed on Triple-A Toledo's seven-day injured list after leaving an Aug. 29 game following an awkward play at second base.
Briceño considered advancing from second on a fly ball before scrambling back toward the bag. After being tagged out following a partial slide, the 21-year-old immediately grabbed at his right foot before eventually getting back to his feet. He was removed from the game the following inning. That means it would be premature to label this an ankle sprain, or anything else, until Detroit provides a formal diagnosis.

Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes packed four innings' worth of outs into three innings during a bridge camp game on Thursday, Sept. 3, an outing that is expected to be his last before a return to the majors next week in Kansas City.
"Today, I think, was for me a good last step, if that's what this is going to be," Burnes said after facing a lineup of Los Angeles Angels minor leaguers on a backfield near Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Working with a fastball that topped out at 93 mph, Burnes worked three innings and retired 12 batters; in both the second and third innings, he remained on the mound after the third out to continue building his pitch count.
He struck out two, did not walk a batter and may or may not have allowed a hit depending on whether a ground ball to third was ruled an error. His repertoire looked generally sharp, and he gave up perhaps three hard-hit ****** .
"Swing and miss on cutters, sinkers, curveball, the slider, changeup -- I think we got a swing and miss on every pitch today, which is good," Burnes said. "Around the zone. For me, the thing is, I want to be able to command the baseball, and we were able to command everything, which is good."

"Today, I think, was for me a good last step, if that's what this is going to be," Burnes said after facing a lineup of Los Angeles Angels minor leaguers on a backfield near Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Working with a fastball that topped out at 93 mph, Burnes worked three innings and retired 12 batters; in both the second and third innings, he remained on the mound after the third out to continue building his pitch count.
He struck out two, did not walk a batter and may or may not have allowed a hit depending on whether a ground ball to third was ruled an error. His repertoire looked generally sharp, and he gave up perhaps three hard-hit ****** .
"Swing and miss on cutters, sinkers, curveball, the slider, changeup -- I think we got a swing and miss on every pitch today, which is good," Burnes said. "Around the zone. For me, the thing is, I want to be able to command the baseball, and we were able to command everything, which is good."

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Wednesday that Shohei Ohtani's knee pain after a slide on Tuesday isn't significant enough to keep him off the field, but the accumulating injuries are still having an impact.
Roberts weighed in on Ohtani's health when speaking with Dodgers Nation's Ava Brand and other reporters on Wednesday.

Milwaukee used a 13-hit attack to restore its eight-game lead in the NL Central over Chicago, bouncing back nicely after losing 17-3 to the Cubs in the opener of the four-game series. The top three hitters in the Brewers' lineup — Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and William Contreras — went 6 for 14 and scored four times.
A day after hitting a franchise-record nine homers, Chicago was held to three singles and three doubles on a muggy night at Wrigley Field. Tyrone Taylor drove in two runs, and BJ Murray Jr. singled in the sixth for his first hit in his major league debut.

US stocks moderated their slide on Tuesday morning as uncertainty around the war in Iran, a bond market sell-off, and speculation about the Fed's next interest rate move kept buyers on the sidelines.

Ty France was the overwhelming answer to the Gaslamp Ball Reacts Survey poll question this week. "Who has been more impressive so far this season?" Respondents had the choices of France, Luis Campusano, Walker Buehler or Bradgley Rodriguez. Looking back, it would have been appropriate to add Yuki Matsui to the list of candidates as well, but France would probably remain the top choice.
The right-handed slugger has been stellar defensively for the Padres this season, despite a bobble on a play on Saturday night. The fielders, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth all seem to enjoy having a Gold Glove Award winner manning first base. It allows them to make throws without the pressure of having to make them perfect. France himself is not perfect, but more often than not, if he can get to a throw he does and that results in more outs and less traffic on the bases for San Diego pitchers.
France came into the 2026 season as a minor league invite, but he has taken full advantage of his second opportunity with the Padres. There is no reason to think he would not receive a multi-year contract offer that would start in 2027 if the season is not lost due to a lockout. France added to his season totals with a home run int the second game of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is currently hitting .287 after 355 at-bats. He has 19 home runs with 59 RBI and 47 runs scored. France has also walked 30 times. He has been entrenched as the No. 4 hitter in the San Diego lineup and there have been calls from some fans the the Padres to slide him up to the No. 3 spot in front of Machado who has been struggling as of the late.
